Thought I'd start a new thread

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
skidaddle · 14/11/2007 14:44

Yeah I know MM - that's why I would go for the Phil and Ted one because it's the same width as a single buggy. I don't drive - you don't either, do you? So am thinking I will be spending a lot of time walking/on buses

clairey - the Jane Powertwin buggy is mentioned on that thread too - is it any good?

mellymooks - great your baby's head down and you actually got to discuss your birth plan - am hoping for the same next time I see the mw!

mellymooks · 14/11/2007 14:46

Hi mememummy, I think maybe you should start nagging a bit you're nearly "full term" they should be talking to you about all this stuff. I don't know about you but I really need to feel prepared otherwise I don't feel in control and I want to feel that I've covered everything before this one decides to arrive.

I was given a plan right from my very first meeting telling me what would happen when, what would be discussed at various points etc
It's shocking really that our care is so varied, it does seem to depend a lot on where you live and what facilities there are in your area, but it shouldn't be that way!!!

We should all be getting excellent care and feeling informed about everything, sorry can feel myself wanting to rant, but I can't help it, it's so important esp. with your first when everything is so unknown, thank god for MN otherwise I wouldn't know half of what I do about all this pregnancy milarkey!

Hi everyone

Housemum, I've just packed 2 pairs of joggers and 2 smart joggy tops/t-shirts for "clothes" in my hospital bag as well. Last time round I was glad of the comfortable clothes rather than put on the combats and top I'd taken in.

Skidaddle, like Insy we've also bought the P&T, I wouldn't be able to cope without a double buggy - not only due to the winter weather but I know unless DD is strapped into a buggy she will insist on walking and then it'll take sooo long to get anywhere and I'll inevitably end up carrying her which will be very tiring post birth and pushing a single! I've got 3 slings now which I intend to use if I'm nipping to the shops with the car etc but I'm relieved I've got the P&T (also been using it in singles mode for the past 6 wks or so and it's great).

All this talk of pastries and Greggs is making me hungry, hmm have had to settle for a cup of hot chocolate though as for the past 2 wks I've eaten so much crap I am scared to go near scales (which I have no intention of now anyway but still!)

Hope everyone is well

skidaddle · 14/11/2007 14:59

loucee - did you get your P&Ts new? I do remember some talk about it a while back (when I was still in denial about the need for a double buggy). It just pains me to spend that much money when I will only need it for a year at most I imagine given that DD is already 2. I suppose I thought she'd be more of a walker than she is but she can only really go for half a mile or so before getting exhausted...

fancy a Greggs pastie as well but no food to be had round here (up on the top of a hill with nearest shop a mile away )

mememummy · 14/11/2007 15:01

i love the scales lol i like the fact i can stand on them but cant see my weight

LOOBYLOU2 · 14/11/2007 15:02

My ante natal care has been much the same as yours MM
Had second parentcraft session this morning
Hospital visit was last Sunday (second baby but things have changed a bit in the last five years re pain relief and intervention policy .... 70% natural childbirth rate at this hospital) and this afternoon MW came to do birth plan.
Urine, blood pressure and measurements taken each appt with the same community midwife.
I have a student covering my case this time too and she will be on call for when I go into labour ... reassuring to have a familiar face rather than the pot luck you have to take when you go into hospital.
I have a friend in the next county - and her care has been really second rate. She has not seen the same midwife twice!

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 14/11/2007 15:04

Hi Ladies

Been resting again today listening to the builders install my new kitchen.Feeling a bit better about it then I got my pay slip and work have buggered up pay and i am £250 down!! Aghhhh

Rang them and its thier mistake so will get next month with some other overdue money realting to a backdated payrise so Dec will be a good un but no good when you bloody need it now!!!

Speaking of tidying up.My legs and bikini look like the new forest and I was going to have a bash at legs on Fri night when dd is sleeping at sisters (we have a bath together) and ask dh to tackle the bikini
I am booked in for a facial, eyebrow wax and hair cut/dye tomorrow as feeling a bit skanky. Also will admit to packing makeup in hospital bag. When dd was born by cs the nurse washed me and did my make up whilst in the recovery room as i felt really yuk.She was an angel. Its silly I know but it made the differance to me.

Claraq I am old enough to be mememummys mum too! Will get round to doing my profile one day

mixedmama · 14/11/2007 15:10

Skid - I love the practicality of the P&T, but just dont like the whole one of them underneath thing, plus so expensive. I am going to play it by ear. at least when LO iss here if I really feel i need a pushchair then I can take them both with me and try out different ones with them actually in it.

mellymooks · 14/11/2007 15:16

Hi Loobylou, that's terrible about your friend never seeing the same midwife, that has been something I have come to rely on as I feel I know my midwife so well now and she knows me and all my concerns/hopes. The only weird thing is that depending when I go into labour she may or may not be working, will be very odd to not have her there after building such a good relationship with her but I'm hoping we'll get lucky and it will be her shift.

mememummy · 14/11/2007 15:17

try the nct nearly new sale they had loads when i went on sat, was gutted to see my £350 silver cross up for sale for £35

mememummy · 14/11/2007 15:18

mememummy · 14/11/2007 15:20

i ave a great cravin for listerine mouth wash my dentist was shocked when i went for check up

cazzybabs · 14/11/2007 15:22

Oh well - at least your teeth will be healthy!

mememummy · 14/11/2007 15:23

i no yeh my dh has started hiding it tho, i reckon its the alchol i want

skidaddle · 14/11/2007 15:24

wow mememmummy that's a bargain (the pushchair)!

mellymooks - that is great you have had such good continuity of care and know your mw really well. I had that last time and it was fantastic - this time it's been a different mw every time but I suppose it matters a bit less 2nd time as you kow what to expect a bit more

MM - you are right - no need to get anything until the baby is here and then decide (thank you for stopping me from impulsively spending hundreds of pounds I don't have!!)

claireybraxtonhicks · 14/11/2007 15:27

Yeah it does seem good. Folded is only marginally bigger than my single (graco) which is great news for storage/in the car. It's twice the weight of my graco and I doubt I'd be able to lift it in and out of car but as I don't drive I'm never in the car alone anyway so not really an issue. When pushing it you don't feel the extra weight at all (something I was really worried about) which I think is down to the pneumatic tyres.

I do find it a bit scary though! It seems really long compared to what I'm used to and dd seemed miles away from me in the front seat so we might not be able to chat as we go along quite so much. Also feels like it might tip going up/down kerbs but I'm told thats common with 3 wheelers anyway and it's just a case of getting used to handling them.

My cousin loved it though so it can't be too bad! Her needs were quite different to mine though, she mostly had it in the car for trips around town etc whereas I'll be using it for long distance walking. Incidentally cannot believe she spent nearly £500 on a buggy only used for jaunts around shops!

claireybraxtonhicks · 14/11/2007 15:31

I went on the tamba site to look for recommendations for pushchairs too and one of the best (both for twins and baby/toddler)was the combi we2. I had a little play in John Lewis and it does seem really good-v lightweight, folds small etc and apparently it doesnt veer to one side with children of different weights in like some side by sides do. They did rate the P&T quite highly too and I do like the way it can be a single or a double but am sticking with my bargain!

mememummy · 14/11/2007 15:32

bargins are the way to go!!!

cazzybabs · 14/11/2007 15:33

We used a mountain buggy and a kiddiboard for dd1 and 2. dd2 is looking forward to using the kiddiboard!

My MB is so much nicer to push than my old horrid graco, although we have had a few punctures!

loucee · 14/11/2007 15:35

Skidaddle, yes we bought it new after MIL offered to help with the cost. I sold my Quinny Buzz on here and put that towards it as well.

Due to where I live and the terrain and weather etc I was more limited to what double buggy to go for. I LOVE the fact the wee one will be really snug and away from the elements in the underneath bit ( I know it's not everyone's cup of tea) and for me a big priority was being able to get in all the doorways I do currently!
I think the Maclaren doubles are quite narrow (75cm) so if you don't need big tyres that might be ok? I'm a walker though so need good suspension!

claireybraxtonhicks · 14/11/2007 15:39

I crash dd's tiny stroller on a regular basis so god knows what I'll be like with a tandem! If you see me coming I advise you to jump out of the way!

skidaddle · 14/11/2007 16:12

hmm, thanks for all the double buggy info everyone
loucee -I also love the idea of the newborn being all snuggly and warm down below whil DD can sit at the front looking out
but will be sensible and wait until the baby is here and then decide

just found a packet of maltesers in my desk drawer - no idea how they got there but has made my day

loucee · 14/11/2007 16:19

oh yes I def think u should wait til baby is here - 3 places I tried all had a few in stock so you would be able to get hold of one quickly if you decide to go for it. Also a swinger for me was the fact they hold their value so well - the 2nd hand ones I looked at were all £300 +.

Have to tell everyone now that my new footmuff has just arrived, it's a Kaiser one and it's fantastic! It feels so warm and snuggly, can't wait to try it out on Friday. Oh dear oh dear, I have become a person I wouldn't have recognised 4 years ago - getting excited about a footmuff!

SarahPT · 14/11/2007 16:33

Hi Everybody

Hope everyone's OK and glad to see that I wasn't the only one in tears at Enders last night.

While everyone's got their buying hats on - can I ask the non-first timers especially for recommendations for baby monitors?

Has anyone got one that they'd really recommend?
