Hi there I have had bleeding yesterday and there seemed to be quite a bit but no clumps or clots. I have feel fine today and the bleeding has stopped. I think I am about 6 weeks but unsure. I have had bad stomach ache also so would you ring the epu or your gp? Thanks

I would go to EPU. they'll be able to book you in for a scan and check everything is ok

babyalfie · 10/10/2007 20:43

can you just turn up or have you to be refered via gp or should i ring them? Thanks for advice

I kind of just turned up at ours because it's attached to the NHS walk-in centre. I know you can self-refer to a&e and talk to someone there, but it's probably worth giving them a ring because really all they can do is scan you and they will most likely need to book you in for that in the next few days

funnypeculiar · 10/10/2007 20:46

I would go to epu (GP won't be able to tell you anything - I went about three times with ds, and twice with dd - they were always lovely!

Our local one you could self refer, but if you want to feel more 'official' you could ring NHS Direct - they can refer you, and I THINK can also give you details of when the epu are open.

FYI, I think you'll prob have a transvaginal scan at that stage (just so you don't fall off your chair when they pull out something that looks like a vibrator

I had this about 11 wks - no pain but so much blood I wondered how there could be a baby left, I rang our EPU and they said they couldn't do anything without a referal, we went to A&E and registra refered me because it was a Saturday - otherwise it would have been through mw or gp - worth giving EPU a ring and seeing how they work (we didn't know the number just rang hosp and got them to put us thro)
by the way am now 30 wks pg - no explaination for bleed but baby def in there and kicking. Hope everything goes well

The first time you need to go to an EPU you need a referral from GP or A&E. Once there they will probably say that in future just give them a ring. I went to two in my local area depending on who had the next available appt for my many episodes of bleeding, from 5weeks onwards (spotting to torrential).
I did not have an internal scan - because they were worried about what was causing the bleeding & if it was to do with the cervix they didn't want to interfere with it.
Beware that sometimes some medical people can seem a bit blase about pregnancy probs in the first trimester, as they consider that this is a very risky time & there's little that can be done. I found the EPU were very caring though.
Hope you get on ok.

EPU im my area were fab, turned up at A&E and they sent me pretty much straight up there. I was quite (unfortunately) a regular customer, 5 to 14 wks with all 3 pgs. 3 lovely DC now tho. Also with DD (=DC3) wondered how she had hung in there, never seen so much blood and stayed pg. as the others say, EPU nurses /mw are fab, they 'get' what you feel when others are a bit dismissive.

insywinsyspider · 11/10/2007 07:56

how are you this morning babyalfie? let us know how you get on x

incogneato · 11/10/2007 07:59

at our EPU you can't just turn up, you need to be referred, so I would call your GP first thing. sorry about all the worry for you babyalfie, hope you get some answers today. do you have anyone to go with you?

babyalfie · 12/10/2007 08:43

Hi I went to and e yesterday an dthey scanned me first normal scan and secondly a vaginal scan and all they saw was the sac and tiny egg and think i am only about 4 weeks but the pregnancy is not ectopic which is good. Thanks for all advice.

Good news! At my first scan at 5 weeks they saw the egg sac then the next one a week later there was flickering, next one after that the flickering was a heartbeat and you could see a blob in the sac. If you can say there is a positive from these scares, then it's the fact you get to see the early development which not all mothers do as normally the first scan is at 12 weeks.
Sometimes they can also see the site of bleeding but I think it is more common the bleeding remains unexplainded.
Hope things continue positively for you

insywinsyspider · 12/10/2007 19:27

thats great news - hope the rest of the pregnancy goes well x

fingerwoman · 12/10/2007 20:40

oh I'm so glad babyalfie, that's really good news. do keep us updated

babyalfie · 13/10/2007 18:13

hello i had more bleeding so had to go for more bloods yesterday and then again today and about to ring up for results at 7. my h...something is 2100 and i am 4.5 weeks does that make any sense and they are hoping when i ring up they will have doubled. I feel so so tired and sick today!!!!

OP posts:
elvisgirl · 14/10/2007 13:03

Sorry, can't help with the numbers but I do know that the level of a particular substance doubles very quickly when you are pregnant, even daily I think. They are probably doing this as you are so early & have not had long in between the episodes so too difficult to see any change on the scan (other than if egg sac is still there, but if still there it may be in trouble if you keep having probs).
Stress from this will make you feel sick & tired. Take things easy, even if they say there's nothing you can do or can't do at this stage it's better to rest up if you can.

babyalfie · 14/10/2007 15:51

just dropping in again... my hb... something on Thursday was 2100 and yesterday was 3800 does that seem okay do you think>???? they were hoping for it to be doubled.

OP posts:
insywinsyspider · 15/10/2007 11:12

that sounds pretty much doubled to me but then I work with stats and % error margins so depends how accurate they claim their tests to be... posting so this gets bumped I'm sure there are some experts out there
