Just found out I'm pregnant

Hey. I just found out I'm pregnant and I am keeping it just between me and my partner for now before seeing a midwife. I just wanted some advice on where I go from here as I've literally just had a positive test two days ago. Yes I know..merry Christmas to us. Haha we weren't trying but it just happened. First time mum to be and need advice as I'm terrified

Congratulations - lovely news for this time of the year

You should self refer now to your local midwife service (via google).

They will send you a letter for your booking in appointment which is usually at about 10 weeks pregnant. This appointment is an hour long and the midwife will give you a lot of useful information for pregnancy and beyond - and you will continue to attend semi regular appointments from then on (initially every month and finally every fortnight/week during the final weeks)

Nothing more to do until then really unless you want to get a private scan from 6 weeks on to check viability etc.

All the best!

Meshy12 · 27/12/2019 11:47

Oh and as a first time mum to a 7 month old here - it is terrifying - during pregnancy and especially after. But so so worth it and you will be fine

rottiemum88 · 27/12/2019 11:50

Congratulations OP, lovely (if unexpected) Christmas news Smile

I think how it all works largely depends on the area you're in. We don't self refer to the midwife here, it's all done via your GP, so I'd probably try giving them a call and find out what the process is wherever you are.

It felt like a long wait until the first scan at 12 weeks/booking in appointment at 8 weeks, so I personally chose to book a private scan at 8 weeks which I don't regret, it was lovely (if a bit surreal!) to see the little heartbeat etc and made it all seem real.

Good luck with everything!

Ahh, congratulations. I got my bfp today :)

Missbee2bee · 27/12/2019 15:26

Thank you everyone. I appreciate the help. Im overwhelmed a little bit but very excited too. I'm in the last year of my degree and I've heard of baby brain so I'm hoping I can manage my dissertation and being pregnant at the same time. Congrats on your BFP. Lovely news. X

Congratulations OP and fizzyheart! Is it your first fizzy or do you already have DC?

I got a BFP today as well Grin DH and I were on a break from actively trying, after we had been diligently shagging during my fertile window for a few months with no success! Turns out it's true what people say about getting pregnant when you stop trying...

I already have 1 DC (a son who will be 3 soon) so DH and I know roughly what to expect, this means we are happy but also freaking out a bit Grin

We should start a thread for "Due in September 2020", I will do it at some point if no one else gets there first!

Missbee2bee · 29/12/2019 21:52

Congratulations on your BFP that's amazing news. This is my first child. That's why I'm shitting myself with anxiety. I'm like erm ..shit..its fantastic news but it was a big surprise as we thought we couldn't have children. I got used to the fact that my cats were always going to be my children so this is a big change. Especially mentally. I'm so so sleepy all the time. I'm around 8 weeks so I assume I need to get a move on with seeing a midwife? I will book in tomorrow and see what the next step is.
As it's getting more real the more excited I feel. I went to Asda's to do a shop and realised i was inadvertently looking at little people clothing and smiling. So I think that's a good sign. Just getting through uni that's terrifying me. But I have support so fingers crossed .
I think that's a good idea about a 2020 baby thread. I need all the help I can get ladies. Really!!

Ah so your due date will be in August then. There is already a thread for the August ones:

You do need to make an midwife appointment yes - you should call your GP surgery tomorrow to ask about it. They might book you in or you might have to call the midwife team to book.

I was utterly exhausted in the first trimester of my first pregnancy. It hasn't hit me yet (too early for me, I tested early!) but I'm sure it will.

I understand the nerves but you've got this. 💪

NameChange30 · 29/12/2019 22:08

PS I meant to also say the exhaustion did ease off and second trimester was better! So hang on in there, only about a month to go Wink

fizzyheart · 30/12/2019 10:20

Ahh, thanks @NameChange30 and congratulations to you too. the baby will be my 3rd dc. Great idea about starting a September thread too.

@Missbee2bee I'm also in my last year of university too. I'm studying alongside my regular job. I'm hoping that baby brain won't affect my studies too much.

I feel so anxious this time round. I don't feel pregnant yet, which doesn't help.

NameChange30 · 30/12/2019 10:25

How far along are you? I don't feel pregnant either but I'm only 3+5 which is ridiculously early days!

Missbee2bee · 30/12/2019 13:03

Little update. I have my appointment with midwife booked for tomorrow after being passed around from pillar to post. Manchester doctors are horrendous. Finally managed it anyway.

Yes! Another student mum to be . Makes me feel a little better. I dont feel pregnant myself yet just very sweaty all the time and cant sleep at night which is killing me as I work early mornings too then go to uni afterwards. Exhausted! Wish me luck Haha gunna need it.

I have only missed one period so I assume I'm not very far into my pregnancy but I'm sure I'll find out tomorrow with a bit of luck what's going on I reckon I'll be due September.

Great that you have an appointment tomorrow! Sorry it was a faff. I've just booked mine, it's not for a month but I'm glad I booked it straight away as there wasn't much available.

Can you remember the day your last period started? That's when they will date your pregnancy from.

Missbee2bee · 30/12/2019 14:35

I got lucky with the appointment I think as my friend works on reception at the surgery. Otherwise I'd be waiting a while to see anyone I think.

As far as my period goes i know I have missed this months for sure but I cant remember if I missed the one before that because of general stress..maybe I didnt realise. I'll post an update tomorrow on how far along I am if she can tell me there and then.

Also one quick question. I'm having period like pains for the last I'd say 5 days. Is this normal?

firstimemamma · 30/12/2019 14:39

Congratulations op. When I was in your shoes (late 2017) I booked myself a GP appointment and told the GP about the pregnancy. They then got the ball rolling re. midwife etc.

NameChange30 · 30/12/2019 14:43

She won't be able to tell you if you can't remember the date of your last period. That's how they date it. If you can estimate at least they can then book your dating scan which is usually around 12 weeks. That scan will confirm how far along you are and your due date.

Cramps are totally normal, I had loads in my first pregnancy and all was fine.

NameChange30 · 31/12/2019 15:23

How did you get on with the midwife today?

Missbee2bee · 31/12/2019 16:32

Hey everyone. The midwife thinks I'm 10 weeks but I doubt that. I just gave an estimate because I dont track my period. Why would I. I wasn't trying to get pregnant and I've always been irregular anyway. I didnt even know that was a thing lol I'm just one of those who didnt really care. Period came when it came kinda thing. I've just got to wait for my letter from the hospital but the midwife says it should be really soon as if I am 10 weeks then I need to be seen for my scan and what not.
Midwife seemed really nice and slightly nuts which is good Haha.

Glad it went well and you have a rough idea of dates. Your scan will be pretty soon then! You might even have a July due date.

fizzyheart · 01/01/2020 09:09

@Missbee2bee glad the appointment went well! Happy new year to you :)

Shannenlouise · 06/01/2020 13:53

Hi, I just found out I’m pregnant on the 2nd of January, I’m finding it so hard to work our when I’m due as I was originally on the pill (massive shock) and I can’t remember the last time I had a period, all I remember is a had a small bleed back at the end of November sometime during one of the last two weeks and now nothing. My clear blue says 2-3 weeks but how sure is that and what does that actually mean?
Iv already self referred and Iv got two appointments back one for a midwife and one for a scan 14th Feb ❤️❤️

I’m nervous as well and always thinking the worst, if I push into my breast then are starting to feel tender, and Iv been having mild cramping in my belly which I know is normal but it makes me worry but I know is normal
