SGC - Hope your diabetes gets under control. Sounds worrying for you - hugs

Loopy/Choudru - Thanks for the memory foam info. I'll def check that out. We can't afford a whole new mattress so a topper may just do it.

Silk- I hope you've had a much happier day today. Yesterday sounds awful.

Floanna - Welcome and good luck with the waterbirth. Loopy has an encylopedic knowledge of these things.

Daisy - welcome to you too. It's great on here.

Choudru - I've e-mailed you. In't technology wonderful. How sad for your friend.

nasr · 04/09/2007 17:28

Hi pregnant ladies,

Really excited to discover mumsnet and this thread.

I am 28 weeks and due on the 27th November.

It really feels close now, especially seen as I only have 7 weeks left of work!! Roll on maternity leave!! And meeting the little one too obviously!

I am hoping to have a waterbirth - all natural but have to have another scan at 36 weeks as I have low posterior placenta, if it doesn't move I will have to have a c-section.

This is my first so very excited.

littleoldme · 04/09/2007 17:36

Loopy - if you think your mattress topper thingy is particularly good could you let me know what brand it is please ? Ta.

Welcome Nasr. Blimey we are a fertile lot!

Lizzie - you are very brave weighing yourself!! I haven't weighed myself since i got too close to the next stone up. I know that if i do i'll just go into the depths of depression coz i know i'll have crossed over into the next stone up!! Glad everything else is ok with you tho!

SGK - hope you sort out your GD. I have a GTT tomorrow morning so i'm a bit nervous about that. Fingers crossed!

Hope everyone is ok this evening. so much has gone on, i cant remember what's happening with everyone so apologies if i've missed you out!

silkcushion · 04/09/2007 22:54

Today - mixed

Good Things - well I didn't wet myself today at least.

Bad Things - I hadn't felt baby move for 15 hours so woke DH up this morning blubbing that I was sure she'd died. Midwife at hospital was very good - got me in for monitoring and everything is fine. Think I've lost perspective a little bit at the moment. Feeling exhausted and emotional. My boss's wife lost her baby last week and I think that was also praying on my mind

Midwife thinks I need to take it a bit easier.

Thanks for all yr messages - don't feel quite so bad knowing that lots of us have temporary bladder problems.

AnnainNZ · 05/09/2007 05:49

Glad all OK Silkcushion. My LO doesn't seem to move all through the day, think she sleeps then. Usually feel more in the evening though.

Quick query for everyone - a friend asked me if I had a safety mattress cover, I said no, she said she had a spare one and gave it to me. It's basically a huge sheet of plastic that goes over the cot mattress. Now, do I really need this, given that my cot mattress is brand new? I haven't even taken the cot mattress out of its plastic wrapping yet. The safety cover packaging has all this stuff about cot death on it. If I need one for the cot nattress, will I need one for the bassinet mattress, which is not new as someone has lent it to us?

I'm just thinking this huge bit of plastic over the mattress is going to be quite rustly and noisy, also possibly quite hot (bear in mind it will be summer here when the baby is 0-6 months old). Anyone else have one? Are they recommended?

iris66 · 05/09/2007 07:59

anna - what does this sheet do, exactly? Your brand new mattress is going to conform to all the safety requirements anyway and bassinets are only used for a very short time so that mattress is going to be hardly used (though if it's a really old mattress I'd buy a new one just to be safe - or at least have a look at it & compare it with new ones re design/cover etc)

silkcushion - my LO goes very quiet too if I'm busy/stressed. Glad you're feeling better

Welcome nasr - I hope your placenta moves in time for you. I didn't even realise they moved at all until a friend of mine had a similar problem and hers moved! good luck.

RGPargy - you're doing a fab job keeping us all on the, now mahooosive, list It's getting really hard to keep up isn't it.

Pixiefish · 05/09/2007 08:09

silkcushion- mine goes quiet when I'm walking or moving around. It's only wen I'm lying/sitting down that it moves.

Took dd to nursery for the first time in 6 weeks yesterday and the blardy comments I got about my size- felt like punching someone- was told tere was no way I'd go another 2 months- erm- I don't feel that big at all. Also people guessing what it is from the way I'm carrying. One girl was totally adamant she was rigt- I didn't tell her but se was totally wrong

OP posts:
nykate · 05/09/2007 10:21

Pixiefish- LOL at bump comments. I've been getting them too since we've been back. People are funny- when I was pg with DD1, a coworker insisted I was carrying a boy. I told her that I'd had an amnio and she STILL argued she was right.

DD2 woke up really out of sorts/feverish/cranky. Hope it's something she can shake off quickly- the day is SO long when we can't go somewhere to burn off energy (theirs, not mine. I have none.).

AnnainNZ · 05/09/2007 10:24

The cot mattress cover says it "complies with the limit specifications set by Dr T J Sprott for the elements phosphorus, arsenic and antimony. This cover will prevent any harmful gas from the mattress reaching the baby".

I am pretty sceptical about it. I can't imagine a brand new mattress that conforms with all the safety standards will contain huge amounts of dangerous gases. And "Dr T J Sprott" sounds like a dodgy medic off "The Simpsons"! Think this may be a case of "let's get some more money out of gullible parents-to-be".

I'm assuming nobody else has one of these covers or has been recommended to get one?

mrsjetson · 05/09/2007 10:25

Hi to all - we are getting all of the symptoms now aren't we??

Just to let you know, all seems to be fine now - I have spoken to my MW in the UK who says 'feet up, rest etc..early dilation for number 4 is normal'. Feel much more confident - we now have our flights booked for the 20th so arrive at Heathrow at 6am on the 21st!! I've never been so happy to be able to sit on a flight for 7 hours with 3 small ones to arrive THAT early!!

Also MW said absolutely NO PRESSURE to have a home birth if I even had the slightest of worries -hooray!! Whata good day. The only bad thing was that DD went back to Nurery for the first time in 3 months - her bottom lip was soooooo wobbly - poor little girl. I then pulled the ligaments in my tummy picking her up! OUCH!!

Have a good day everyone - I am off with some girlfriends to indulge in a feast of cakes and pstries - I might aswell enjoy whilst I can. xx

choudru · 05/09/2007 10:34

Morning ladies,

Iris - I can't do fresher's week thing - DH couldn't get the days off to babysit and I don't have the energy to commute from mum's for 3 days. Plus they wanted someone for 8 hours a day - which means 8 hours of sitting down. I just can't do that anymore! So I wimped out

Have decided to only take small, local jobs right now.

Shame as I would have loved to do it - for the cash and for the experience.

Silk - glad you're kind of feeling better. You just sound like things are getting to you more than they normally would. Probably a sign you need to relax and try to make a bit of time for yourself. Why don't you treat yourself to something you enjoy? Put your feet up with a good book or go see a film or something.

Pixie - I wouldn't take any notice of all the comments about the bump. I have recently started getting a lot of comments on how small my bump is (last month I was getting comments on how big I was!). So you can't win. I don't think people mean to make us feel paranoid - they are just passing comment. It's just that hearing the same comment 4-5 times a day does get a bit wearing!

I haven't been weighing myself either - I feel like I have out on less weight with this one than I did with DS but then I do have half a stone left over from DS so maybe this LO is feeding off that!

Anna - I don't know what cover your friend is referring to. Sounds like something you don't really need since mattresses do have to comply to safety standards now. It's not like you're re-using a mattress from another baby so I wouldn't give it another thought.

Going to take DS to toddler group shortly and then run some errands.

Have a lovely day everyone

aikigypsy · 05/09/2007 10:58

Anna -- In terms of gas from mattresses, I think the best thing is to air it out for a few days. If there's any cotton in it, there probably will be some chemicals, but I wouldn't be too bothered about it.

I had a whacky dream last night in which the surface of my belly had gotten very thin and non-muscular, and I could see the baby's hand poking it, a whole little handprint. It was really cool, but my stomach looked a bit rough. It looks pretty normal this morning, but stretched.

iris66 · 05/09/2007 11:21

aikigypsy - hope your trip's still going well. Have you decided where you're going to live once LO's born yet? lol at the dream. The books often say that you can see a definate hand/foot poking out as you get bigger don't they. I only get pointy lumps.

choudru - shame you're not doing it but I totally understand. I did a reflexology demo day when I was only 5mths pg with DS and it nearly killed me. DD is in Leeds with her dad atm for registration day I'm so excited for her (talk about enjoyment by proxy )

Mrs Jetson - what a relief for you to finally have everything booked. Did you feel obliged to have a HB before? ( normally it's the other way around!)

Anna - sounds like a "lets panic new parents into buying something they don't need" thing - like you said. I'd go with aikigypsy's advice & bung both mattresses outside for a day or so for a good airing.

I've got my consultants appointment this afternoon and have been trying to get some questions written down to get them to commit to what whey percieve as real medical risk of a HB regarding my GD. Think I may start a thread & hope some specialists are about (though do feel free to give me any pointers on here!!)
have a good day all.

aikigypsy · 05/09/2007 12:19

Thanks, Iris. And no, we have NO IDEA where we'll shack up!! [hair-tearing, chicken-w/head-cut-off emoticon]. We are still waiting to hear about DP's school -- he's supposed to do a program this year, was supposed to find out about it in July, got wait-listed, STILL waiting to find out what's up! The long and the short of it is that I'll be heading home alone on Tuesday , then he'll either be following in a couple of weeks, to stay for a while, or come over in November for the big event. Then at some point we'll come back here, I think, but it's all very annoying since we can't make plans, and while I would really like for him to be with me this fall, I'd also really like him to finish school. I have fantasies of settling down properly, but chances of buying a house in the next decade are slim-to-nothing unless I miraculously find a way to make tons of money!

Floanna · 05/09/2007 12:46

G'day ladies!!

On a different topic - What is everyone doing about maternity leave?

I've told work this morning that I'm going at 33 weeks due to long commute and still got lots to do which will be harder by myself - they were really understanding, so now it's just a case of counting down the next 3 and half weeks - yay!!

Easywriter · 05/09/2007 13:55

Bonjourno! I am SO tired of hearing my (Monica Seles stylee) grunting everytime I bend down. (Always takes me by suprise!)

So, glad to hear that we're all reasonably well.

RGP - How did the GTT go? I don't know if you're doing one like Sparkly where you get your results within a day or two or me where it can take up to seven working days but let us know.

Incidentally my results were OK. I got the midwife to ring up as they only inform you if there's something amiss and I needed to know for sure one way or the other.

Anna - I thought that the current thinking was that cot death was caused by overheating. If this is the case putting a plastic sheet on a matress may turn out to not be a god thing to do as it REALLY turns the heat up for the person in the bed. (Discovered this after a night of musical beds with my wee ones when I thought I was being roasted on gas mark 9!!! No wonder DD made a point of high tailing it out of there and into our bed!).

MrsJet - Just a wee question or two. Can you get insurance given the number of weeks pregnant you are? When will carriers refuse to take you, if indeed they'd do such a thing?

Easywriter · 05/09/2007 14:05

Oh Iris - I forgot Loopy pointed me to a yahoo homebirth group (to which I'd direct you if I had even so much as a whisper of technical knowhow). On the group are a variety of ladies who've had glucose intolerance (i.e. diet controlled blood sugar) and diabetes of the injecting variety and still had sucessful homebirths.

They're v. positive and a mine of information (which I tapped into a lot when I forsaw my HB slipping away). You could just read relevant threads or start your own afresh.

These ladies are prepared to loan out the kit they bought to keep an eye on their blood sugar levels (I think you only need this if you're injecting insulin).

There's also a midwives group on yahoo which is useful to pose questions to as well as some of the most experienced midwives around are group members. I found it good for getting a steer as to whether I was being mental and my plans might endangermy baby or I or if I was just requesting something the hospitals didn't like to do because of their protocols.

The other thing you would probably benefit from researching is shoulder dystocia (when babe gets stuck due to being too large).

G*d! I sound like a broken record spouting on and on and on about GD/shoulder dystocia but I just want to help shortcut you to good info sources.

Pixiefish · 05/09/2007 14:14

MrsJ- glad things are ok. ho are you staying with when you get home or have you a house over here?

aiki- sorry to be nosey- where do you live ? Is it USA? Just with you saying fall and school Is your dp at uni?

OP posts:
Fingerbobs · 05/09/2007 14:45

Oh dear, another GTT in the post here - mine is indeed because my random blood glucose is too high at 5.8. Boo . Hope yours is ok RGP.
And on the mat leave topic, I'm going to try to struggle on until 36 weeks but to be perfectly honest I'm ready to stop this minute and I'm only 29 at the moment. Feeling v. v. stressed and weepy, particularly now that chocolate, my only solace, is likely to be removed from me.

aikigypsy · 05/09/2007 15:10

I live in the US, DP is in Ireland with one year to finish his degree.

I just took a really close look at my GTT results for the first time today, and it looks like I wasn't over on the initial screening test, but they sent me in for the long test anyway. My fasting blood sugar was right at the cutoff point, but everything else was well under the limits. Grr. Needless pain and suffering!

AnnainNZ · 05/09/2007 15:13

Floanna, I went on maternity leave at 29 weeks, parly due to having pre-existing high BP and my job being qite physical (certain amount of lifting etc). Best decision I have made for ages - the last couple of weeks at work were very tiring and I really could only keep going because I knew the end was so close! Feel like I am actually enjoying this last bit of pg now (apart from the insomnia and looking like a Teletubby!) as I can rest when I need to and get stuff done when I have the energy.

I am very fortunate we can afford to do it this way and I'm trying to make the most of this time. Money is a bit tighter but my sanity is more important!

AnnainNZ · 05/09/2007 15:16

And thanks for all the input re the huge plastic mattress cover...I think it probably isn't necessary and will chuck it in the bottom of a drawer

LizzieO · 05/09/2007 15:52

Hi Peeps

sorry to hear about the peeps with high GTT scores, i also had to have test due to having a bottle of lucozade before seeing MW who took randon urine sample (they always like to don't they) GTT was ok tho'. Thought i might have stitched myself up again as scoffed down bag of choc caramels before consultant appt, luckily didn't show high levels in urine test though

Anyone here used baby sling ? the Calin Bleu looks like a nice easy comfy one to use, have got a mothercare papoose at home but its more like baby rucksack, i didn't use if for DS but DH did and felt a bit silly think with toddler and baby , sling might be the way to go for me this time round
