Expecting twins in 2020?

Is anyone else expecting twins (or more!) in 2020? I just found out I am. They’ll be our first. Technically due in April, although reality means probably March. Would love to share with other mums in the same situation as I’m now reading a whole new set of baby books and articles!

@Slinkerbell ahh I see! I thought there was no brake at all for a minute then and was wondering how that was even safe?! Haha!

@Wishing56 right, OK. So hopefully my hospital will be more open to my birthing preference when we get a bit closer to the date and actually sit down and talk properly. Ahh bless you! Don't blame you for going for the earlier of the 2 dates ❤️

xx

Hey ladies (👋 @ChampooPapi!!)

I hope you don't mind me jumping on this thread... I still can't quite actually believe what I'm typing but I found out today (after a bleed scare at 6+3 and a trip to EPU) that I'm pregnant with MCMA twins (identical and share the same sack and placenta). Is anyone else expecting twins of this kind? I've googled it and scared myself as I've read the mortality rates for these kind of twins is 50/50. I've also read that they're SUPER rare and often people find out at the 12 week scan that they're actually MCDA twins (so have a dividing membrane between them) - which is apparently a lot more common and safer! Apologies if you all already know this - today was the first I'd even heard that twins could be like this!!

Anyway... my original due date was 7th Jan 2021 but that was when I thought I was only pregnant with one baby... I imagine now they'll probably come some time in December!

I'm a first time mum and also had a missed miscarriage at 12 weeks in November last year. I am slightly terrified but here we go!!!

Hope you're all doing well! ❤️ xxx

MilsCookie · 16/05/2020 23:31

P.s. Just had a little scan of the thread - huge congrats to all those whose babies are here!! 😍

Wishing56 · 17/05/2020 06:48

@MilsCookie congratulations! Sorry to hear about your previous loss. Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy.

When I went for an early scan they thought my babies were MCMA as they couldn't see a dividing membrane but couldn't say for certain (my first scan pic shows how close they were). When i was scanned at 12weeks the hospital then said they were MCDA as there was a membrane (albeit very thin and sometimes hard to locate).

How have you been feeling? If you are anything like i was you probably haven't slept much and constantly googling everything about twins.

LittleMiss7 · 17/05/2020 07:37

@MilsCookie welcome to the twin gang and congratulations!! 🎉 sorry to hear about your previous miscarriage 💔 How have you been feeling? How far along are you? X

ChampooPapi · 17/05/2020 07:55

Yay! Waves @MilsCookie 🙌

MilsCookie · 17/05/2020 10:25

Thank you for being so welcoming @Wishing56 and @LittleMiss7!! That gives me a lot of reassurance @Wishing56 - I really hope they find a membrane between mine as well. How are your twins doing?!

@LittleMiss7 I'm only 6ish weeks (I should be 7 weeks today by LMP). They measured them to be 4.9mm and 4.5mm at the scan yesterday. I've been feeling okay thank you, my main symptom is just absolute extreme tiredness, like all the life is being sucked out of me! And had a fair few headaches as well. How far along are you? Have you been feeling okay?

So glad to have found this thread to not go through this mad journey alone! xx

LittleMiss7 · 17/05/2020 10:43

@MilsCookie ahh bless you! Hope the exhaustion passes soon. I was the same - couldn't function at work and was generally asleep by 8pm most nights. That lasted until approx wk10. I'm now 17+5 and only get occasional days where I feel like I need a nap! Thank god for lockdown on that front! Haha! Also got REALLY breathless - it still comes and goes even now but was quite scary at first. Where are you from? X

MilsCookie · 17/05/2020 11:26

@LittleMiss7 that's also really good to know haha! I'm based in Oxfordshire! What about you? What sort of twins are you having?

Piglet11 · 17/05/2020 11:35

So sorry to hear of your previous miscarriage @milscookie but that is lovely news that you are pregnant with twins! I think worrying just comes as part of the package with multiple pregnancies, especially if you have had a hard time in the past. I am a massive worrier, for no reason most of the time.

Just a few questions for everyone, I’m 17 weeks pregnant today and the babies seem really low down, and my bump is at the bottom of my stomach, is this normal? I’m also feeling occasional pressures/sudden quick pulses in my cervix, again anyone else had this? And finally I find when I do any exercise (walking, prenatal yoga) I get very wet down below. Getting myself all worked up about potential amniotic fluid leakage or the beginnings of placenta previa. I live in an island where none of the midwives have much experience with twins. All my appointments are going to be Skyped to a clinic several hundred miles away so there is no point in me asking the clinic here x

MilsCookie · 17/05/2020 17:26

Thank you @Piglet11 it was a horrible thing to go through and my worst fear is that I'll have to go through it again.

I'm sorry I can't help much with your questions but I hope you can get some reassurance soon? are your twins dcda?

Piglet11 · 17/05/2020 18:35

Thanks 😊. I know exact how you are feeling! All the worry will hopefully be well worth it though!

I’m having non identical babies, own sacks and placentas. They were the result of a ‘no hope’ transfer we had with ivf so was a massive surprise!

Ladybug84 · 17/05/2020 19:58

Hi, welcome to those who just joined and congratulations!
It is a rollercoaster, and I'm afraid to say the worries do not go away, although it did get easier for me once I started feeling them move at 20weeks. I'm currently 33+2 with DCDA and these last weeks are flying by if compared with the first and second trimesters 😊

@MilsCookie sorry to hear about your loss. But miracles and happy endings can still happen. I also suffered a miscarriage at 11weeks in Aug 2018 with my first pregnancy and after 14long months waiting for another positive pregnancy test we finally got lucky last October and it was twins. It is common to bleed more with twins, I had a scare at 10weeks this time around but all was well and I haven't had an issue since. Just keep a positive mind and enjoy every day 😊 xx

LittleMiss7 · 17/05/2020 21:37

@MilsCookie I'm in Poole, near Bournemouth. We're expecting DCDA (?) twins. I get so confused with all these abbreviations 😂 non identical twins with their own placenta and sac xx

LittleMiss7 · 17/05/2020 21:41

@Piglet11 sorry I'm unable to help re your questions, but I didn't want to just ignore you. It must be hard not having midwives near to help you, especially ones that aren't experienced with twins. Which island are you on? X

Piglet11 · 19/05/2020 14:50

Thanks anyway guys! I ended up going to the hospital and had a physical check of my cervix. Everything looked fine so 🤞 it’s just normal for me. How is everyone getting on?

LittleMiss7 · 19/05/2020 15:04

@piglet11 glad to hear all's fine xx

Ummusomebody · 20/05/2020 12:27

@MilsCookie Welcome to the twin club and so sorry for your previous loss. I'd echo what others have said re: mcma twins and that it is too early to tell for certain. Even though I'm dcda, the person who scanned me refused to commit to that until 12 weeks. So fingers crossed for you.

@Piglet11 are you having cervical length scan? Some consultants do them here to check the likelihood of you going into premature labour. Glad to know you got checked out and everything is fine. Don't worry about the bump.. mine was low and small to start with until I literally just"popped" one day. Now it's the biggest I've been and keep saying surely you cant get bigger than this. I've had Braxton Hicks since like 18 weeks and they've become really bad in the last 4 weeks but got checked and the everything seem fine so I think it's one of those twins niggles. If in doubt, go get checked out.

MilsCookie · 20/05/2020 17:08

Thank you ladies. Sounds like it's just me with the MCMA twins (although really keep your fingers crossed for me that they are in their own separate sacks please!! Will be much safer if they are)

Wow @Ladybug84 it's stories like yours that give me so much hope. I'm so sorry for your loss. You're only weeks away now from meeting your babies!! Have you got everything ready?

@Piglet11 glad everything was ok!! must have been a relief for you.

@Ummusomebody that's interesting that they wouldn't commit to them definitely being dcda twins until 12 weeks. I got scanned at 6 weeks and they've just said they are mcma and it's super high risk. No reassurance at all that they might be mcda - I've just read that myself online! They also told me about vanishing twin syndrome... that often two embryos get picked up on an early ultrasound, but by the 12 week scan only one is there Sad. I guess it's just a waiting game for me at the moment as it's such early days...

Hope everyone is ok! x

Piglet11 · 20/05/2020 17:24

Thanks a lot @Ummusomebody. I don’t think I will be having that scan as when she opened me up and had a look herself she seemed happy enough. Sorry to hear you are having Braxton-Hicks, must have been worrying for you. Things are never smooth sailing are they?

Thanks @milscookie. At 6 weeks things are so difficult to see so hopefully the12 week scan will give you some reassurance. I realise it will probably feel like a decade until then though. Try not to google as it always scares you no matter what you search!

hummingbirdbyvictoria · 21/05/2020 18:31

Congratulations we have twin girls they are 3 now. Would love to go back to the baby stage x

LittleMiss7 · 23/05/2020 16:10

Twin mums to be... Sensitive subject I know but can I ask you about weight gain since finding out you’re pregnant please? I hopped on the scales this morning and was shocked that I’d put on 5lbs in 2 weeks 😮 Pretty sure that’s more than the average, isn’t it? Since the end of Feb, I’ve put on 1st 1.5lbs... am I taking this eating for 3 malarkey too seriously or does it sound about right? 😂🤔 admittedly I’ve not done ANY exercise this week 🙈 which I know won’t help but still.. I’m worried I’m gonna be told off when I go for my 20wk scan xx

ChampooPapi · 23/05/2020 16:54

@LittleMiss7 I'm nearly 14 weeks and 12 and a half stone at eeigh in last week. My fighting weight is really 10 stone, but I was 11 stone before I got pregnant. So I've gained a stone and a half lovely. To be honest I've had two other children and the weight drops off you the first year post birth. I know I'll loose a fair amount just the twins coming out! Then I'll keep gorging delightfully for a good six months after they are born as you just need to have the fuel to look after them and feeding babies is tiring. Really try not to worry, once I stepped up exercise again and kept an eye of the cake and portion size after I had my last daughter I lost a good stone in a couple of months no problems 😄

Wishing56 · 23/05/2020 17:09

@LittleMiss7 mine was a bit all over the place. I started at 11st 4lb
I lost 1 stone in the first 16weeks due to Hyperemesis so went down to 10st 4lbs. By the end of my pregnancy at 36+4 I weighed 12st 8lbs.

8weeks after birth i was back down to 11st 4lbs without doing any exercise etc. Think it was all just babies, fluid and a HUGE placenta (the midwives commented on it when my placenta was delivered).

I was weighed twice during my pregnancy once at booking in so they could check my BMI and second time was before i received an iron transfusion so they got the right dose. They therefore didnt have an opportunity to comment on any loss or gain.

Ummusomebody · 23/05/2020 18:40

@LittleMiss7 I still having similar experience with @Wishing56. I have had hyperemesis throughout and list 10kg in first trimester and even now although I'm able to eat, my weight has remained the same in the last 4 weeks. No one has weighed me though since booking and I'm 32 weeks. I'm just still hoping babies are putting on some weight though.
