ShowerTheHorse · 11/03/2019 09:20

Wow @boodles!! Congratulations! Do you have twins in the family? So exciting!

boodles101 · 11/03/2019 10:22

showerthehorse thanks, no twins in either side of the family! Will have to wait til 20 week scan to hopefully find out if they are identical or not.

Shellbot3000 · 11/03/2019 10:59

Hi new here I'm 14+6 with my first! Excited and worried all the time. Cannot wait till my 20w scan Smile

MyBreadIsEggy · 11/03/2019 11:42

Urrrgghhh this day just gets better and better.
DS thought it would be hilarious to pull out his willy and piss on my leg like a dog Hmm I’d asked him 2 seconds before: “Do you need to wee on the potty?”
“No mama!”
Hmm

I swear my DH is going to be coming home on Friday to one less child Blush

DustyDoorframes · 11/03/2019 11:46

Welcome shelbot!
decaf urgh to the vomming!! You've had all the luck!! Are you off work this week??

Megan2018 · 11/03/2019 11:51

Hi all

What do you reckon the definition of "cooked through" is with steak?
Trying to stick to the NHS guidance but really fancy steak. Normally I'd have it really rare and bloody.
Do you think Medium counts as cooked? I'm not sure I could stomach well-done.

Stroan · 11/03/2019 11:57

Unfortunately it means no hint of pink or blood.

I couldn't even chew a steak like that, waste of a good steak! My mum had a med rare one last night and I was so jealous.

@Megan2018

Try doing a decent sauce instead to keep the moist feeling whilst cooking through. Also allow the steak to settle in its own juices after cooking. That helps.

If you want a tip for a simple sauce: cook steak, remove from pan to settle, put single cream in steak pan with a dark soy sauce ratio to taste, little cornflour if you like a thick sauce and then heat until thickened etc.

Great with steak and chips

Megan2018 · 11/03/2019 12:11

I don't know what I'm going to eat then, fecking sick of fish and chips - going out for birthday and there is literally nothing on any pub menu I like apart from steak!

I think I'll risk it tbh - the risk in beef seems much lower than other meats.

Megan2018 · 11/03/2019 12:11

@Karigan195
I don't do cooking!

DustyDoorframes · 11/03/2019 12:20

@Megan2018 it's toxoplasmosis you are looking to avoid by cooking meat well, and the risk is pretty low. Also, with your horsey background it's fairly likely you've actually had toxoplasmosis already, so are therefore immune. (But I'm not a doctor and you should make your own judgement call!)

IVEgottheDECAF · 11/03/2019 12:20

I eat medium rare steaks when pregnant. Didn't for my first but dc2 , 3 and 4 i did and i have this pregnancy too Blush

MyBreadIsEggy · 11/03/2019 12:20

To be totally honest, I take the food guidelines with a pinch of salt.
The mould ripened cheeses makes sense to me, but I wouldn’t eat any of them anyway! Gross !!
Patè I avoid because of the liver/high vitamin A thing.
But all the other stuff? I’m of the view that if DH is having a rare steak out of the same packet and doesn’t get food poisoning, then it’s not going to automatically poison me or my baby. I know that food poisoning is worse when you’re pregnant, but have you ever had food poisoning from a rare steak before pregnancy? Because I haven’t.
Valentine’s Day was the day before my booking appointment, and I’d literally eaten half the things she told me I shouldn’t have the night before....rare steak, and an antipasto platter Blush

IVEgottheDECAF · 11/03/2019 12:22

dusty i have requested a sick note from my gp and let work no so yep, looks like no work for me

Also made my 16 week mw app this morning for 2 weeks tomorrow

IVEgottheDECAF · 11/03/2019 12:27

easterbuns sorry i have just seen you asked about support belts, i got mine from the hospital last pregnancy it looks a bit like this

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01GO2MU50/ref=sspa_mw_detail_0?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8

Tbh its not the best its ok while i am up and about but when i sit down it moves out of position and becomes uncomfortable

DustyDoorframes · 11/03/2019 12:30

@MyBreadIsEggy I have eaten the odd but of chicken liver pregnant- I love it and craved it, it's not so high in vit A as some livers, and until relatively recently liver was encouraged for the iron... its a judgement call, obvs eating liver and shark all day every day, pate off the floor and licking cat poo are going to be a bad plan, but occasionally having something from the No List is unlikely to cause issues.
@IVEgottheDECAF I'm glad you are resting but not glad that you need to!!! (And presumably "resting" includes looking after your youngest, right? Heh) Can you get a private physio session to tide you over? It might be cost effective if you run into problems with sick pay. Thanksanyway.

Stroan · 11/03/2019 12:33

Yeah, I also take the food guidelines with a pinch of salt. I should have said - I would definitely have a steak med to med-rare. As long as the middle is at least slightly warm really. The only reason I was jealous of my Mum last night is that I wasn't hungry enough for steak!

There's a book called Expecting Better, I keep meaning to read it. But it supposedly breaks down all the "rules" and explains the reasoning behind them.

The only one I stick to rigidly is the pate one because of the high levels of vitamin A. I'd eat cooked mould ripened cheese and cured meats etc. Wouldn't eat tuna steaks or swordfish anyway so avoiding those is easy!

I grew up on a farm drinking unpasteurised milk, I think the risk of me getting sick from a bit of cheese is miniscule.

DustyDoorframes · 11/03/2019 12:50

Expecting better is very good, but my main take away from it is thank f I don't live in America. They weigh you every two weeks and tell you off there, and that's for starters (assuming you've got health insurance...).
The NHS is a lot better at treating you like a person with feelings and opinions, in my experience.

MyBreadIsEggy · 11/03/2019 12:55

Stroan that’s my rule too.
When I’m not pregnant, I eat my steak blue - like I could defibrillate it and I’d have a mooing cow in the pan Grin
But while I’m pregnant I’ll have it a little more cooked so it’s warm in the middle. It’s my compromise!

Stroan · 11/03/2019 12:58

@dustydoorframes that sounds like my consultant appointment last week where the consultant went on and on about my weight and told me off for drinking orange juice, even though I explained repeatedly it's the only thing that doesn't make me sick. I cried in the end, and that's when she stopped. She also tried to talk me out of an ELCS, after telling me that my birth with DD was a lot worse than I had ever thought. I'm taking DH for back up next time I have to see her.

OP posts:
Stroan · 11/03/2019 13:00

I really want an antipasti platter and a steak for lunch now!

OP posts:
DustyDoorframes · 11/03/2019 13:02

Oh my god @Stroan that's grim!!!!!!!! Are your midwives better? Can you change consultant??
My hospital is brilliant, I'm really lucky!

DustyDoorframes · 11/03/2019 13:03

Yeah me too Re lunch...

Stroan · 11/03/2019 13:18

@dustydoorframes it's a bit complicated because I'm choosing to give birth in a different NHS area to the one I live in. Hospital is far closer, newer and nicer. So my midwife is great, but in a different area to the consultant and I feel that the hospital care is more thorough.

The same consultant was amazing during my first pregnancy, so I'm hoping that last week was a blip. I thought I was there to review HG meds, then got ambushed with the weight stuff. Annoying because I'd already had an appointment there a week earlier to go through a gestational diabetes plan.

Anyway, I'm having my ELCS. It was the first thing the doctor said to me as soon as DD was delivered, and it's in my notes and debrief letter!
