@toomanyflatwhites Part of the reason I was so unhappy after my consultant appointment last week was that she asked about my age (36) and then asked a bit vaguely if it was 'deliberate' that we'd left it so late and then later on in that appointment asked if being pregnant was 'on purpose'. At the time I just nodded and smiled but was furious and upset when we got home and I thought about it.
I wrote to the hospital PALS (patient advice and liaison service) at the weekend and yesterday I had a very apologetic call from the antenatal ward and am now seeing a different consultant. If you're really unhappy with the one you've got, you could try this too? It was much quicker and more effective than anything I could have made happen by myself.

toomanyflatwhites · 31/01/2019 17:16

@SilverSister that's absolutely outrageous!! I'm glad you complained and got an apology. Nothing wrong with this consultant per se, just very matter of fact and speedy and not personable at all. I'm just glad I'm not generally too anxious otherwise I think this would have freaked me out completely (as it is, it has a tiny bit, and I think I'm pretty level headed and aware of the risk...)

ML3on4tay · 31/01/2019 17:35

Hello everyone! New to this!

I'm 29 and expecting my first. Due 8th June with a mystery baby (we've enjoyed guessing the gender too much so baby goes by the name of Sprout.)

Excited to find the June 2019 board. I was too nervous to join before as my first pregnancy ended in miscarriage but I'm 21 weeks now and Sprout is kicking away merrily.

Reastie · 31/01/2019 17:44

Silver I can’t believe the consultant asking you that at only 36!!!

Scan first thing tomorrow morning but getting very nervous about safely driving there after the snow that’s predicted for tonight Confused

Bimbabo · 31/01/2019 18:15

First midwife at booking in was a bit bonkers and didn’t listen. Forced me to take away vitamins which I told her I had at home and happy to buy more if they ran out. She actually got up and put them in my bag with all the paperwork stuff so I’d take them. So much for NHS saving money. Then told me that no one would judge and completely my decision about breastfeeding then went on a lecture about the benefits of it. Some of her info was wrong or misguided also.

All other midwifes have been friendly and kind. My consultant is also very good and nice manner about him. He’s one of the ones that all the nurses in the hospital hope they get when they’re pregnant. He’s also very good at his job.

Working in the nhs I’ve seen terrible consultations and very good ones. Always speak up of you don’t like something. I think the most important thing is good communication and basic manners. Sometimes I think people in health car me roles forget that not everyone has the extensive knowledge that they do and the smallest of remarks can cause offence and more importantly worry when it can easily be avoided 🥰

Napssavelives · 31/01/2019 18:18

My midwives have been very nice so far, had a fair amount of contact with the team leader because of current situation. They’ve been ringing and keeping in touch

hexagon01 · 31/01/2019 18:19

I think I was lucky with my consultant appointment, the doctor I had was lovely and she booked me an extra scan at 36 weeks that she didn’t really need to. I have been discharged to midwife-led care so I won’t need to see another consultant hopefully, unless I opt for ELCS I suppose?

Blondcat · 31/01/2019 18:27

I have had lovely people that I have dealt with the midwives are lovely and no issue with my age (37) not even been mentioned. The sonographers were both fine little to the point (I am guessing coz they have so many people to see) but friendly enough and told us loads about what we could see.
On the work front I am going to work as long as possible though I do work from home and my own boss so I am lucky to have the flexibility.

Changingagain · 31/01/2019 19:25

toomanyflatwhites I was consultant led last time from 25 weeks and from the start this time. I appreciate that they are specialists in their given area and I'm glad they're keeping an eye on me and bump but it means not having standard midwife appointments and I feel like I can't talk about general pregnancy things or the birth as they're only really interested in their own speciality. I've also found that while they're nice enough they always seem very blunt.

I'm another one waiting for the scan on Monday, I don't know if I'm more excited or nervous.

rollerskaterdata · 31/01/2019 19:27

@Kescilly Oooo, I'm an analyst by profession so love a good stat! I'm not on Facebook so will be staying here.

Age (at due date): 28
Predicted sex of baby: Girl
Location: South East

@socktastic I was also induced last time at 38+1 due to hypertension, my body was not ready though and after a gruelling 25 hour labour and a syntocin drip (think that's what it's called?) to speed my labour up my baby boy arrived safe and sound. Even though I'm a second time mum I have a 25 and 31 week midwife appointment for them to check my blood pressure and keep a closer eye on me. Really hoping my blood pressure behaves this time (it is so far) so I can have a natural labour this time as I want to know what that feels like!!

@SassehMonsta I have even less than that which is crazy! I have to use all of my annual leave up before I go, and as I work part time and have over 20 days to use I've ended up needing to take the equivalent of 7/8 weeks of annual leave BEFORE I even start my maternity leave! So I'll have finished work mid March and I'm wondering what to do with myself! I'll only be a couple days shy of 29 weeks 😳

Heyha · 31/01/2019 19:50

Every midwife I've seen has been lovely just wish I'd seen the same one at least once! I think it's the same one for my 25 week as 16 though and she was my favourite yet so that's good. Sonographer and trainee were great too, efficient but friendly. The vampire ladies on bloods are always a bit scary though and the practice nurse told me off for not having my book with me for my flu jab but did it in a nice way (and she was right!)

Heyha · 31/01/2019 19:52

Oh I also meant to ask are people booked in for antenatal and birth unit walk rounds yet? I'm not but wondering if it'll be too late to get in by 25 weeks at my next appointment? I hate ringing them for little things though because I know there'll be far more important stuff for them to be doing.

rollerskaterdata · 31/01/2019 20:22

@Heyha my hospital don't do tours until you're at least 30 weeks! (much to my annoyance). Not all of them are like that though, in my last pregnancy (different NHS trust) you could go any time

Fabuluce · 01/02/2019 06:36

My hospital doesn't do tours full stop! They say it risks bringing in infection to vulnerable areas.

LauralovesLuke · 01/02/2019 06:40

My hospital also doesn't do tours...I'm relying on descriptions from women in my pregnancy yoga group to create a mental image 😂

toasterstrudle · 01/02/2019 07:34

Mine doesn't do tours, we were shown pictures in my antenatal group of the birth centre which unfortunately I got nowhere near!

hexagon01 · 01/02/2019 08:57

My hospital have a ‘virtual tour’ on the website, might be worth looking at yours to see if they have that.

Torsz · 01/02/2019 10:44

My birth centre does weekend tours according to their website - when would you suggest we do it? I was thinking about 30 weeks maybe?

fee1234 · 01/02/2019 11:04

Sent all my forms away, my official last day in the office is 3rd May, exactly one month before due date. Countdown is on.. 13 weeks today!

Kescilly · 01/02/2019 12:01

I am so sleep deprived, I just want to sit here and cry. I haven’t been able to breathe or sleep well for a week. Last night I slept about three hours, broken up into chunks throughout the night. That was a good night; I’ve gone entire nights without sleeping at all.

The plumber was supposed to come between 1-5 today so I thought I’d try to sleep a bit more. Well, I finally started to fall asleep, he knocked at 11, woke me up, and left before I could get to the door.

I know it sounds stupid but I am so exhausted. I don’t even know if he’s going to come back.

toomanyflatwhites · 01/02/2019 12:37

Oh @Kescilly you poor thing!! So frustrating when somebody wakes you up too! And I totally sympathise - I found that sleeping with more pillows helped, and also putting some eucalyptus oil on a tissue to breathe I'm really helps me. Hope you feel better soon and can have a chance to try and nap again!

Kescilly · 01/02/2019 12:47

Thanks @toomanyflatwhites, unfortunately all the pillows haven't helped. I get sick a lot and it hits me harder than most people but I can't even take my usual meds since I'm pregnant.

The plumber has decided that he's not coming back today and will be back on Monday. I think I might actually throw something out the window at him if he shows up on Monday.

What is it with people? They don't care if you've taken time off work or rearranged your life, they just show up whenever or not at all. No phone call. We've had multiple tradespeople just not show up.

Heyha · 01/02/2019 15:11

@hexagon good thinking, I've seen a virtual tour of the midwife-led unit now and it looks like a mid-market hotel 😂 so I'm feeling better about that. Nothing about the wards but I guess they will be fairly standard!

socktastic · 01/02/2019 18:20

Apologies for the tmi post but I'm sat here utterly panicking and I don't know what to do. I'm trying to do a poo the size of an elephants leg and it's too big to come out. I can't force it through at all. What the fuck do I do? There's blood coming from it too.

hexagon01 · 01/02/2019 18:49

@socktastic oh no are you okay now? I have no advice but I hope you are safely off the toilet and poo-free!
