Now that's all out of the way in the thread title we've all got to head down the "things can and will only get better now" ok?? All ailments stop and nothing but good things will befall us all.

Right.

To be honest I'm sure yet about the Vitamin K shot for bubs - don't know enough about it yet to make an informed decision. Personally though I would like the injection to speed up the placenta delivery - I think the quicker I can get my fanjo from being on public display the better and if it saves on any more contractions it will be well worth it.

I would like to wait until the cord has stopped pulsing, although that means the baby can't be taken away and cleaned as per DH's wishes - I'll explain the benefits to him and I'm sure he just say whatever you want honey!.

Was sent home from work today at 4.15 as there was a power short in my area of the office and I lost my PC power and more importantly by AC unit (as the office AC is STILL not fixed). Temp in the office was 27.5 degrees when it went off and my boss told me to go home before it got too hot - I certainly did't need telling twice !

Banana, my DH is a bit queamish too but I think in the end he'll probably decide to do it - one of those things in life you might only do once. In honour of your screen name I think your bathroom colour should be remamed sherbert Banana, not lemon! Well done - I'm not sure I'd be up to painting at this stage - really glad I did the nursery 10 weeek ago.

growingbagpuss · 05/07/2007 09:49

Erm - what made me decide no vit K injection? I can't really remember - I know DH and I discussed it beforehand - I think it was because it is something that is routinely done - to cover a very small number of babies that might be born with a clotting problem. Don't quote me on this mind! My Midwife said it was a choice and that, like the syntocinon inj (for the quick delivery of placenta), we had a right to choose.

I'm not keen on intervention for the sake of it -so we opted out. Interestingly - I ended up having the syntocinon anyway coz I was bleeding quite heavily.

You DO get afterpains afer having a baby (all you newbys) which are a bit like nasty period pains. For me they got worse and worse, to the piont where I couldn't talk, or move - that was when we realised my back had gone into spasm and my uterus couldn't contract -hence the heavy bleeding. But that's my horror story. Bear in mind I'd had no pain relief at all - so I got the full raw hurt of it all!!!!

growingbagpuss · 05/07/2007 09:53

lets see if I can do a link.......

"try this page www.womens-health.co.uk/vitk.asp"

For the Vit K info - as I said - it covers something like 1 in 10,000 babies that are born with a clotting disorder and is ONLY a risk to exclusively breastfed babies (which I didn't know)

growingbagpuss · 05/07/2007 09:57

gosh I'm so clever I've killed the thread too.....

STOP BLOODY WORKING YOU LOT!!

mum2george · 05/07/2007 10:01

I had the injection last time but have put that I don't want it this time, unless necessary.

It was introduced to stop women dying of haemorrhaging and does save lives, thats why I've put if necessary.

With DS I did have it but I wasn't informed there was another option. We had skin to skin and he latched on almost immediately and I've since learned that this is just as effective as the injection, nature's way of sorting it out

The reasons I don't want it are, it made me really sick so I had bub in one hand and a bowl to be sick in the other hand, nice. Also, your uterus can close too quickly, before the placenta is delivered, and you can end up in theatre due to retained placenta.

Don't mean to scare anyone but there is a woman on this thread who had the injection and nearly died because the placenta broke up and she retained just a part of it which was undetected:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=49&threadid=348679&stamp=070705093249

So there are pro's and con's of having it. TBH if you have had a crap labour and you really have had enough, and you want to run the risk of the retained placenta and being sick I'd have it. If everything is going well and you can relax and get baby to latch on, I'd see if you can deliver it yourself, you can always have the injection a bit later.

Having said all that I did have a good labour and never judge any woman on the choices they make regarding pregnancy, birth, feeding or parenting. I just think that we should all have better information given to us so that we can all make informed choices.

My birth plan last time was gas & air, no pethidine (family history of really bad reaction), and skin to skin. This was the ideal though and I did say to the mw who I did the plan with and the one who attended the birth that I would be happy for anything to happen, as long as it was necessary. Luckily, it all went pretty much to plan and I think knowing about all the side effects of the different drugs really helped me through.

DH didn't cut the cord, he is way too squeamish and he doesn't want to do it this time either. I don't think we missed out on anything really. Think I will get him to have some skin to skin though this time whilst they check me over. Like I say though birth plans are an ideal and anything can happen!

Sorry for the really long post

mum2george · 05/07/2007 10:09

Sorry for posting again , Katy I would go with the not going by timing the contractions thingy as well.

We had an ante-natal day recently and the mw said not to phone until the contractions were 5 mins apart and lasted for 1 min. If I'd done that I would have delivered at home with just DH's help.

Think I've killed the thread too......

growingbagpuss · 05/07/2007 10:13

maybe its just you and me today then hey?!!

mum2george · 05/07/2007 10:24

Looks like it, but I'm off for a bit now to try and tackle the huge pile of ironing that seems to be taking over the house, groan.

growingbagpuss · 05/07/2007 10:55

Aaah - got mine done yesterday by some miracle. DH actually had the nerve to moan at me because HE had moved some unsorted washing from the bed... and ended up wearing my socks (oh the trauma!).

To top it all, then he started joking that of course, if I had the baby on friday evening, he wouldn't need to take any time off work. .... . Then.... he suggested inviting my sister down to "look after me".... Needless to say, marital relations are not at thier peak...

Babylovesmuffins · 05/07/2007 11:00

Morning all - I'm here too! Have meetings on and off for most of the day though so I'll have to keep trying to catch up.

Interesting all the comments re Vit K injection and Syntocinon injection. I'm hoping to find out more at our a/n classes as we haven't really decided yet. The only thing I do know is that if I opt for a water birth, I need to deliver the placenta naturally as they don't give the injection after a water birth (not sure why ). I don't want them pulling the placenta out either, as I've heard about bits of retained placenta being left behind...

Katybird LOL at your story of the guy who thought the belly-button was like an egg-timer!! Mine must be nearly cooked then. (and my sex drive disappeared quite some time ago too, so don't worry! The spirit is willing but the body just doesn't have the energy...)

katybird · 05/07/2007 11:07

I'm here early too for once! Thanks for all the chat about vit K and syntocinon injections, really useful. I'm hoping for a water birth too, so I guess I won't be having it unless I need to. My birth plan is similar to your first mum2george, want everything natural but who knows what will happen!

BLM - i know exactly what you mean re sex drive!

Here's an amusing pic to cheer you up on such a miserabel day - maybe you should consider wearing something similar to your sister's wedding GillL?

katybird · 05/07/2007 11:08

miserable - my typing's rubbish

Mrsshuvel · 05/07/2007 11:13

Hiya, i'm here aswell, well just about anyway. Did not get a wink of sleep last night. Couldn't lay on my back or sides and just couldn't get comfortable with any amount of pillows propping me up. Feel very snappy and looking for an argument at work today. I promise i'll be nice on here though .

Haven't even thought about placentas and injections yet. Think my MW is gonna go through everything with me next week. Not having antenatal classes until i'm 36 weeks either - does that seem quite late to anyone else? Terrified i'm gonna have him early and not have a clue what i'm doing. Haven't mentioned this to DP as he panics at the slightest little twinge i have. Have told him that he needs to be calm and serene around me when it actually starts and not just stand there asking me repeatedly 'what is it, what is it, what is it' when i can't talk cos it hurts and winding me up.

Ooh Happy Birthday Annie

Mrsshuvel · 05/07/2007 11:16

Just read my post back and really do sound grumpy but laughing out loud now at the state of that dress. Hahahahha thanks for cheering me up Katybird

katybird · 05/07/2007 11:23

Poor you MrsS, don't worry, feel free to rant on here! Glad I cheered you up.

There's always a risk that your LO might arrive before you finish the classes, but if you do them too early you might forget everything! The classes are great for information but the birth itself should be fairly instinctive. At least I hope it will be!

conkertree · 05/07/2007 12:12

i am in the same sort of mood today mrss and I'm not really sure why cause i thought i slept ok last night.

think i will just stay in my office as much as possible and avoid contact with people too much.

belly button has not popped out and is not even flat - but bump is huge. very few clothes still fit.

am very jealous of all you who are off work now.

Babylovesmuffins · 05/07/2007 12:18

Hahahahahaha at that dress Katybird!! Thanks for that.

Mrs S I'm sorry you're feeling rubbish. It's so difficult to be nice to people at work when you've had next to no sleep -especially when they come out with the stupidest things !!! I think Katybird's right about not doing the antenatal classes too early - we start our midwife's class on 10th July when I'll be almost 34 weeks but the NCT classes aren't until I'm 36 weeks (which includes a 6-hour session on a Saturday !!!!).

I'm feeling a little bit ropey today actually. Slept fine between 11pm and 3am but when I got up to go to the loo I got really bad heartburn and couldn't get back to sleep. I have a pack of Gaviscon tablets beside the bed and I took one at 3am - next thing I know I'm waking up at 6.30am with a horrible chalky sludge stuck to the roof of my mouth - oops and yuck! Think it will be a glass of milk next time. Anyway, I think the Gavsicon has had a total laxative effect as I have to keep running to the loo - sorry if TMI!!

GillL · 05/07/2007 12:53

Afternoon all. It's manic at work with emergency meetings. One of the customers is not happy so we're all having to run around like headless chickens trying to sort out reports and plans. So much for a quiet last week. I'm sooo looking forward to finishing work next Thursday and it's a half day because I have a mw apt at 1pm.

I went to the injections to speed up the placenta delivery and I remember them pulling it out. I didn't really care though as I was just glad it was all almost over. Also, you may have stitches to worry about. If you get the placenta out quickly you'll get the stitches done quicker and, as Hersetta said, you won't be on display for quite so long. I also opted for dd to have the injection. One thing I will change this time is having skin to skin contact. Last time I wanted dd cleaned up first. They actually put a gown on her (as we didn't have time before the birth to bring up my hospital bag). Although she did bf well I still want to have skin to skin contact as soon as possible. And it should be warm enough that we won't have to worry about him getting cold.

I may not have time to post again today so hope you all have a good afternoon if I don't speak to you again.

lizziemun · 05/07/2007 12:54

Sorry some of you are feeling grumpy, i have been like that since tuesday, but today i feel full of energy and have actually doing some house. I am just trying to convince myself not go and cut the grass as i know i well get told off by everyone.

So i think i well have a sit down for an hour then i will go and do some baking, and put some washing on.

katybird · 05/07/2007 13:04

Don't do it lizziemun! Pop your feet up and watch some tennis.

At least you've only got a week to go GillL, then you can forget about work entirely for a few months.

lizziemun · 05/07/2007 13:18

To late katy, i have already put the tennis on so the chase of anything else been done, unless rains stop play again .

Washersaurus · 05/07/2007 13:25

Afternoon all! I've come to join the grumpy club .

I made the fatal error of moving a chest of drawers in DS' room yesterday (I know, I know, but DH will never get round to doing it) and think I have done myself a serious injury; it feels like I have pulled something, sort of around the bottom of my bump and groin area, it really hurts when I walk . It serves me right though really! Am scared I will go into labour early now

I had the injection to deliver the placenta last time as I had an episotomy and needed stitches (which were painful enough without worrying about more contractions etc.)

Recently, my midwife mentioned that with a low-lying placenta there is a risk of haemmorhage (sp?) so they insist on giving the injection - so am suprised at all the horror stories

Washersaurus · 05/07/2007 13:27
SweetyDarling · 05/07/2007 13:44

Hi Everyone,
Just got back from growth scan. All ok, but looks like we'll be having a real squidge of a baby - 6 pounds at most is thier estimate!! Just an effect of the restricted arterial flow - apparently it will slow down growth but not development ie everything (lungs etc) will be normal and formed properly for dates, but will just be smaller than normal. Ah, well. No point worrying I guess?
Seeing my OB tomorrow so will ask about the various injections - I can see both sides of the argument re the placenta delivery, but what are the down-sides to the Vit K injection?
Anyway, Cheer up chickens. Get yourselves a funny DVD and put your feet up. Then a bath.
Hopefully that will help?

katybird · 05/07/2007 13:51

Sorry you're not well either Wash, lots of rest and not too much walking and hopefully you'll recover soon without bringing on labour! I think it's easier to get groin strain now because all the ligaments are softened.

Sounds like an excellent plan Sweety, I might just do that when I get in from work. Don't know about the growth scan, I've not had mine yet. Are they predicting 6lb at birth or at the moment? A smaller baby means an easier delivery probably!
