Oh..... I had really good support in hospital after having DS, but that may have been the exception rather than the rule, I guess . As I've said before, the hospital where I had DS had only been open for four or five weeks so it was proably still staffed at maximum levels....that and the law had just changed in Scotland regarding BF in public so there was a huge media drive on about it....maybe because of that Scottish hospitals were being more pro-active...who knows?

Admittedly though it was still very difficult and I actually asked my sister at one point (who's BF LO was 7.5mo) if she would oblige as DS was so hungry and frustrated . needless to say she wasn't keen on the idea

Its always worth a try IMO Twiga. Give them a call for sure! What they've offered is really no good.

derlor · 22/05/2007 13:15

i had a mum and baby recently who i was BEGGING to give a bottle to cause the baby was loosing so much weight - i almost had to call social services on her because the LO was literally starving - even with me there every farking day offering to feed the baby a bottle myself she would not back down cause of the "breast is best" hype that had been rammed into her - i wanted to shake her - took a visit from myself and another straight talking more experienced HV to get her to listen. i was truely concerned for the baby and lost sleep over it from one day to the next worrying that it might die whilst the mum just wouldn't listen - it was SO frustrating - baby now doing well though think mum hates me

I think alot does depend on the hospital Daisy. I have to confess that I was desperate to get out of there, and they kept asking me "has he fed? Had he fed?" In the end I just said yes. The MWs just weren't helpful.

When I got back home, the next morning he was yellow and sleepy. I felt absolutely awful and scared and everything. It was terrible. It was all my fault, why did I tell them he'd fed? yada yada. I rang the hospital, rang the MW and the community MW was round in an hour. I was honestly beside myself, on my own and in a right state. She sorted me out straight away. He did have jaundice, and they monitored him to see if he'd have to go back for some light theraphy, but it was all ok.

Frightening though.

foxybrown · 22/05/2007 13:19

Bet there's a thread about you on here Derlor! Have you checked Evil HV threads around that time?

derlor · 22/05/2007 13:20

Hardly any white choc in my box of delights - i got lots of little 6 packs of chocs and some amazing mini easter egg things - no big blocks of choc like the picture. got a lucky dip pack too with a selection of surprises that you just have to taste to see if you like them - oh what fun!!!!!

foxybrown · 22/05/2007 13:22

oooh, i'm SO jealous! Is it too late to order???

DaisysGotABigBump · 22/05/2007 13:25

I miss Hotel Chocolate and am very of you all....mind you, I'm into the cheao and cheerful with galaxy at the mo, I can't get enough of the stuff....DH bought me some Green and Blacks at the weekend and it did absolutely nothing for me and left a horrible taste in my mouth, as if I'd been eating dog food [bleargh]

not that I know what dog food tastes like, but it left a taste akin to how dog food smells, IYSWIM.

Mind you i did used to eat fish flavoured kitty-kat when I was a toddler (but only the fish one)....my mum had to hide the tins so I couldn't get at it

Foxy - i avoid "i hate my HV because" threads on here - way too scary for me - looked at a couple in the past but they are like a bunch of prison bitches when they get going and it might just make me cry - i feel sorry that most people seem to have crap HV's - i hope none of my mums really hate me maybe just the one i was telling you about though, but i did save her baby's life even if she doesn't see it that way! she has been nice to me since so think she might have forgiven me???

trendaverter · 22/05/2007 13:28

I am with you on the cheap and cheerful, I used to be an avid hotel chocolate fan, nowadays you are more likely to see me cowing down on Aeros, Maltesers and mint Echo bars.

mmmm echo bars...maltesers.... I think a Sainsburys shop is in order

trendaverter · 22/05/2007 13:29

Cowing?? oops cHowing lol

derlor · 22/05/2007 13:29

DaisysGotABigBump · 22/05/2007 13:34

DS wants to go to the park....the sun is out, so why not...there's a really nice cafe so I can sit in the sun with some tea and watch him play!!

breastfeeding support in hospital for me seemed to consist of midwives grabbing my breast and jamming it into DD's mouth... not especially helpful.
once I was home it was much better, I was more relaxed and the breastfeeding support lady was a great help and actually gave me assistance in the whole getting the angle right malarky. Much better than just being manhandled!!

Twiga does your appointment letter have the phone number of the physio on it? If so how about calling them direct and explaining that you will be on the brink of having the baby by the time you see them. They might be able to bump you up the list themselves.

RedFraggle · 22/05/2007 13:36

Derlor - my HV was lovely. Much more approachable and thorough than many of my midwife team...

foxybrown · 22/05/2007 13:37

They used to do Orange Aeros, didn't they? But I haven't seen them for a while. Hmmm, might need one of those soon.

foxybrown · 22/05/2007 13:38

Oh, Derlor, My HVs are lovely too!

And I have some proud mummy news.

DD is out of nappies. I am TERRIBLY proud!

annobal · 22/05/2007 13:46

Afternoon everyone! Just got back from chiro and drs - need to pick up DS from nursery soon but enough time to catch up with the morning. Everyone seems to be in such a good mood today - is it the weather??? I, on the other hand, am grumpy and tired as DS2 woke up at 5am (streaming with a cold so gave him some medised) he did go straight back to sleep but I can never get back to sleep .

Ooohh - I just got an email from Eurostar about Belgian specials with a lovely picture of waffles and strawberries - there should be a law agains sending that sort of thing to a pg woman. I am going to have to find some waffles now - can I still travel to Belgium at 34 weeks?

annobal · 22/05/2007 13:48

Well done to your DD Foxy! DS2 is also just recently out of nappies - seems to have a good week then a bad day where he doesn't seem to remember...

ScottishMummy · 22/05/2007 13:49

foxyB - fair enough i am unaccoustomed to your posts and pondered the post and decided that surely it was a laugh- glad i was right

notsolilKel · 22/05/2007 13:55

Foxy just have to tell you, you make me PMSL. Making us all feel inadequate - as if that were possible! Ha!

Re BF - of course I boringly I agree with everyone else - thati is, do give BF a go, but if it doesn't work, don't kill yourself out of guilt trying to make it work. I have no idea if it will work for me this time - I mixed fed DS quite well for a month, but then mastitis and his reflux did us in.

This time round I'm ready with a pump (electric one), the bottles, and some cartons of formula. If we don't have to use any of it, fine. OK it's a waste of money but hell hath no fury like a hungry baby when you're faffing around trying to acquire/build/clean a pump or acquire formula & bottle on short notice...!

foxybrown · 22/05/2007 14:02

Thanks Lilkel!

Yep, I've got my steriliser, bottles, formula, teats, all ready to go if I need to.

I would say it does take a while to establish bf, and you really do have to stick at it. IME just when I am ready to give up (and I don't give up at anything easily) it comes good. But its a good 6 weeks of pain, worry and panic before it does. And I won't express before its established, it just isn't worth the pain or disappointment.

Saying that, DS2 and DD have been immediate latchers so it was never a problem with them, only me who had to suffer!
