Hi guys, I haven't been on for a week or so as baby Oliver arrived last Saturday night. Here's my birth story:
Back in mid December I had my first false labour - loads of BH and the odd proper contraction along with shooting pains down my legs and unbearable SPD/PGP. Went to bed hoping to get some sleep and see what happened. They changed to the real thing and got to about every 10 mins but after a few hours I felt baby wriggle and literally pull up out of my hips and the whole thing stopped, pains and all!
The same thing happened a few more times over Christmas, each time more intense.
At 41+1 I had a sweep, was already 3cm dilated and effaced to about 1.5cm. That evening the contractions started again and went on until the pain in my pelvis was so bad I had to crawl up the stairs to bed.
I headed in to hospital the next day (last Thursday) to try and get someone to work out why I was ending up in so much pain as the midwife said it just didn't make sense to be unable to walk at that point in labour. As the baby was clearly active and seemed fine, sadly I would say I was fobbed off a bit as they put it all down the normal PGP pain and gave me some painkillers!
After a few more false starts, on the day of his birth, the Midwife came to visit and admitted she was a bit worried as to why things weren't progressing. She did another internal and this time oliver's head was wedged with all his weight against my pubic bone in what she thought might be brow presentation but I was a good 4cm and head very low (only about 1cm from vagina entrance let alone the cervix!!). She had a little go at nudging him by getting a finger between head and bone (ouch) but didn't want to accidentally break my waters.
Being only a couple of days away from 42 week scan and consultant appointment I made a new birth plan to ask for them to confirm baby's position however they could and if still wedged then I wanted an elective c section. However if position was more favourable I was still hoping to do it naturally at home rather than being induced.
I went for a bath as the pain in my hips was so bad, then just lay on the sofa hoping for movement, Pelvis, leg "spikes" and lower back pain just got worse and worse with me in tears thinking I was going to end up at the hospital but my hubby forced me to call the midwife back as one way or another something was very wrong. (He thought it was probably next stage contractions).
Midwife arrived and actually agreed withe me that they didn't seem like contractions, but she checked his position again and not only had he turned but he'd gone fully straight in perfect birthing position & I was 5cm dilated!
Due to the pain and the fact that I was already half way there I got into the birthing pool in the hope it might relax me and bring real contractions on, so in I went and immediately wanted to push! In my mind I didn't feel ready so was holding back for about 3 contractions to be honest but by the 3rd/4th I couldn't do anything but go with it.
First half of the next contraction and his head was out followed almost immediately with the rest of him shooting out in his sac under the water towards the midwife. I've never felt so odd afterwards - Just total shock that it was already over in such a short time! Second stage of labour noted as being just 11 minutes. (I'd argue the first stage was probably a month 😉)
The only annoying thing was that the placenta took another 45 mins as I suspect my body was as shocked as me!
