Adventure it must feel weird? I've got 18 days left in the office and am finding it strange and wondering what I'm going to do with my time.

KLane we looked at a nursery a while back, but I'm going to take some of my Mat Leave time to do some more research and go visit a couple of others in the area. Like savage I'm also going to look at Au Pairs and Childminders as an alternative option. My biggest worry with that is what happens if they're sick?

teainbed · 27/02/2017 14:16

Found you!

Have used the same nursery for years but only ever 2-3 days a week or so depending on what I've been working. I've never put them in very young but there seemed to be fairly happy 6 month olds in there. It's quite a small cosy nursery and we know the staff really well. Thankfully they'll be fine with us phoning up when we need a place!

Rustler74 · 27/02/2017 14:17

I definitely dislike the idea of a nursery as in my job I visited one too many where I was taken aback by the poor carer:children ratio, and the lack of training. Saying that I need to find the right childminder as well. Sending little ones to the childminder sounds more attractive to me but I've been rather spoiled with the ones I have known.
Maybe I'll try find someone who needs childcare on Monday and Tuesday and can take mine on Thursday and Friday ? I had no idea in any way that I may need to start looking now! Panic !!!

Oh $?!€ nursery something else I haven't thought about.... well I have but just sort of ignored it Blush

Flying with Flybe today, got asked at the check in desk how far along I was but he didn't ask for my fit to fly letter.... hopefully it will be as simple going home... Mainly pleased that I managed to fit my magic pillow in my suitcase Grin no point contributing to the lack of sleep more than necessary!

Adventure can't believe this is your last week... in a strange way other people stopping makes it feel more real to me!

Might look at that natal hypnobirthing Sauvignon my concern about a five week face to face course is if we move halfway through that's going to be difficult. Confused

EsmesBees · 27/02/2017 14:23

Thanks for the new thread rustler.

Adventure I can't believe you are finishing work already either. Still got ages to go here.

EsmesBees · 27/02/2017 14:29

My toddler is in (the world's most expensive) nursery 3 days a week and it's great. She's very settled and has been since she started at a year.

The reason we chose a nursery over a childminder is the lack of scrutiny if there is just one main caregiver. My SiL had a nightmare when it turned out her childminder had been leaving the little kids with her teenage son when she did the school run Shock

peasandquiet · 27/02/2017 14:36

Working longer hours today as my mum need me to pick up my son earlier, later in the week, pretty much asleep at my desk right now.
rasberry your due same same day as me, when are you finishing? I'm here till 26th April ... feels like a lifetime! Adventure, is this your first, enjoy the rest, batch cook, rest more !!

stationaryace · 27/02/2017 14:40

My SIL organised her nursery place when she was 16 weeks pregnant and even then she couldn't get her first choice (to use when her dd turns 1, 18 months later!). It all depends on choices available and popularity. One of my mum friends uses a childminder 2 days a week and hasn't had any problems re sickness etc.

Just had my dd's 27 month check with the hv today who said they'd be in touch shortly for this one - I don't remember seeing any hv pre-birth last time. In fact I'm pretty sure I had to pester them to see the mw after I moved into the area at 32 weeks pregnant! Think I might just tell them I'll see them once baby is here, we already had to miss one playgroup for the check-up this morning and I think dd has the hump Confused

mrscrocopop · 27/02/2017 14:41

Thanks for new thread.

I am in total avoidance mode re: childcare! I agree with the pp who said they can't imagine life in three months never mind one year! However, it sounds like I may need to pull my finger out quite soon! Confused

MrsJW15 · 27/02/2017 14:47

Oh der KLane - whereabouts are you? I sort of assumed we'd be ok to wait until after the baby was born. Some of them do say that waiting lists are a bit hit and miss as it depends on days etc. DH is off work Friday and Monday, so I might make it his task to phone the ones that didn't reply to my emails.

Adventuregame · 27/02/2017 15:04

Dream I'm totally moving in with my friend for the duration of bathroom build ! DH is away and my friend lives a 5 minute drive away, lives on her own and has an en suite spare room I can have ! I may not move back home - haha

RasperryInAMelon · 27/02/2017 15:23

Peas I'm finishing on March 31st, 22 days of holiday to use and then 3 weeks of early Mat. I spend 4 hours a day commuting to and from work - just can't keep doing it sadly

KLane · 27/02/2017 15:38

MrsJW15 We are in southeast London, Lewisham/Blackheath way. With only 3 nurseries within a close walk to the station, and 2 of the 3 being outstanding, seems demand is insane!

coxsorangepippin · 27/02/2017 15:41

rustler, lucie we visited three and they just felt so different from each other. The one we liked just felt like the sort of place a tiny baby could be happy - very calm.

IAmSeriousAndDontCallMeShirley · 27/02/2017 15:46

Afternoon all. Just jumping on to placemark and say hi. Another thread already. I can't keep up! C

Teaspoon74 · 27/02/2017 16:07

Thought it was a bit quiet over there... here you are! Thanks Rustler.

Cinnamon enjoy!!

& I worked out today that I am 63 days from induction (consultant pref) or 77 from DD. Terrifying as I now need to start looking at/reading up about the business end of things...

Love the photo thread - thanks Rasperry! Missed that first time round. Inspires me to take one of my own ;). Lovely to see so many different shapes/sizes/positions of bumps too. Every one a unique little cooker.

On the hospital snacks front - are we talking little boxes of raisins and nuts, or cream eggs and monster munch?? Just after a steer!

MissMoo - take it easy. Do you have a home BP monitor or somewhere you can pop to for a quick check?

Klane- ooh, may need to PM and pick your brains if that's ok? Am just East of you. I think, and haven't even started looking at nursery places yet, but heard good things about the one next to Blackheath Halls...

RasperryInAMelon · 27/02/2017 16:12

Teaspoon... cream eggs and monster munch! 👌🏻

KLane · 27/02/2017 16:19

Teaspoon Sounds good! I think I know which one you're talking about. We actually looked at one in that group on Friday, though not that specific one :)

Teaspoon74 · 27/02/2017 16:29

Phew - thanks Rasperry Grin

Creme eggs are 10 for £2 at Tesco at the moment, for anyone else thinking about hospital bag snacks for yourself and OH #justsaying m.tesco.com/h5/groceries/r/www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=287062141

peasandquiet · 27/02/2017 16:31

Nursery wise I have already got a place booked for the baby starting April 18. It's very hard to get places around here and wanted/needed both children at the same place.
With my first I left it till baby was about 3 months and then had to wait another 8-9 months for him to start as they didn't have any spaces. We have moved nursery since then tho and this one is busier. If there is somewhere you have in mind there is no harm in doing it early.

Snacks wise, I took the squashed squash drops things and cereal bars, not sure I even ate them while at hospital but useful BF midnight snacks. I would say pack things that travel well and you like. And take enough for your partners as they will most likely want some too!!

savagehk · 27/02/2017 16:33

I didn't want to eat in labour, but it is a good idea to snack on something to keep your energy levels up. I'd be more concerned about fluids, and probably something with more 'energy' in it than sugar. Last time I packed smarties and plain salted crisps as I figured they'd be easier to drip-feed into me. As it was I was getting dehydrated and low blood sugar and they gave me some kind of glucose drink to rehydrate me. This time I'll be asking OH (in advance) to offer me fluids / snacks more regularly. It was the last thing on my mind in labour.

savagehk · 27/02/2017 16:34

Although peas makes the very valid point that once you are bf your calorie requirements go through the roof (don't think I noticed while I was in hospital though) so energy dense stuff is fantastic for afterwards (snicker, anyone?)

MrsJW15 · 27/02/2017 16:48

It's so hard to figure out what waiting lists are like in Hackney Confused. I'm planning to go back to work in Feb, so I'm happy to have a childminder for the first few months if we need to wait for a nursery place. Nursery would be ideal though - and there are a lot of good ones near us.

Sipperskipper · 27/02/2017 17:13

Thanks for the new thread!

Rustler74 · 27/02/2017 17:23

Phew I phoned a childminder nearby and she said she does not have a waiting list. I'm hoping to investigate this even further and find one we both like just for our peace of mind. It appears there's a few within less than a mile of us!
I'm not sold on cream eggs or monster munch so I'll have to find something else! Lucozade will be part of it, and I think pombears but not sure what else. I'll keep an eye out in the next few weeks. Good thinking, though!
