We have a wedding in July 2-3 hours drive from us. The save the date makes no mention of the baby. It's one of DH's friends so I've told him he needs to clarify whether they are expecting baby to come or not. If not, I'm definitely not going.

Autumn I'm a FTM so possibly being very over-optimistic, but we are taking baby away in July (train to France) and August (flying to a wedding in Portugal). People keep telling me that very small babies are fairly portable...

savagehk · 02/03/2017 15:10

Small babies are a lot more portable than ones that have started weaning and/or moving....

mrsJW trains are much easier than planes with small children / babies, IMO, as there's none of this having to be strapped into your seat on takeoff/landing (or during turbulence) and you can walk up and down the train if needed with baby in a sling (and much less of the security mess at any airport).

gin hope you start to feel better soon. UTIs are the worst thing ever.

Not sure about the PAPP-A peas, it hasn't been mentioned to me. My section is planned due to two previous sections (failed inductions) which means they won't let me attempt VBAC this time around. It seems to be blood flow in the uterine arteries that is the issue, and I need to keep track of movements, and they need to watch my blood pressure and baby's growth.

On the subject of travel, DHs brother lives in Canada- he hasn't seen him for three years (we've a niece we haven't met and they haven't met our youngest). We are now booked to go with some friends on the 7th of August, flying to Calgary and hiring a camper van to tour around in then staying a few nights in Edmonton. We need to do it in August to be back in time for DD1 to go into Y1, but I am worrying we've bitten off more than we can chew! Grin. I've done short haul with babies before with no issues, but never this far.

MissMooMoo · 02/03/2017 15:47

nothern I have booked to fly to Canada at the beg of October with baby.
Its an 8 hour flight so I am hoping it will be OK.
Probably will be baby's first flight.

teainbed · 02/03/2017 16:04

What a trip Northern! Especially the camper van bit. Grin

We've rented a big house right on a really remote beach for July. In Scotland. ShockHopefully my older DC can run feral and DH and I will do our best with the new baby. We're inviting family to help with childcare and cooking so should be a nice change of scene anyway.

PeachIcedT · 02/03/2017 16:14

I'm glad to hear some of you have trips planned, I'd love to have a little week somewhere abroad this summer but have been unsure of the practicalities. But it's nice they fly for free!

beanturnipandspud · 02/03/2017 16:15

Travelling with babies .... before they can crawl is a doddle.
Travelled with Turnip when she was 10wks old to Turkey for a family wedding, on my own as husband couldn't get time off work. Bean stayed with DH. Had to ask for help to hold baby at security as pram needed folding down to go through scanners and then when we got settled on plane. But she slept both ways.

Once they are mobile it gets trickier as they don't want to sit still and you have to try and keep them entertained.

We have booked to go to Spain in August for family holiday and then we are going to Rome for our 5th wedding anniversary in October with just spud (bean & turnip staying at home) and then krakow in January again with all children for my birthday.

The only thing to consider is bottles if intending to formula feed, as they need sterilising and not all hotels have microwaves big enough for the small sterilisers and if travelling abroad you have the water issue. We used bottle water for turnip when in turkey.

beanturnipandspud · 02/03/2017 16:17

peach not free on all airlines. But minimal cost. Think we have paid £25 each way for infant flights to Spain. They do get loads of luggage allowance though ... and if you have a pram you tend to be able to use fast track at security at no extra cost 👍🏼

Autumnsweater · 02/03/2017 16:24

Oh blimey, baby passport hadn't even occurred to me Blush, good job I asked!! Thanks everyone, great trips planned! I'll wait and see how we feel and think about something in late summer.

MissMooMoo · 02/03/2017 16:25

Infant was 10% of my ticket price to Canada.
Still was £416 for both of us return!

savagehk · 02/03/2017 16:25

In my experience you get fast tracked with a child irrespective of pram (we always have been, and haven't travelled with a pram until very recently), I think because they expect to have to go through the whole liquids thing with you in great detail (tasting baby milk / purees for instance).

Does depend on airline cost wise but they're practically free until they occupy a seat.

WishIWasSleeping · 02/03/2017 16:26

Totally agree travelling with a EBF baby is a breeze. My Parents live a 2hr flight away, and I even managed it on my own. (Didn't take a pushchair though as we took and left one first time around)
I don't know about all airlines, but with monarch if you have a hold bag baby gets a free 10k in addition to a pushchair and car seat allowance.
If you don't book a hold bag baby gets no allowance. (They let me bring a changing bag and check in my hand luggage)
We recently went to Rome and booked a hold bag, so had 50k between us! - but at a year old when DD wasn't asleep she did need entertaining and DH struggled a little as it's usually my job to have her on my knee but my bump kinda got in the way! Grin

WishIWasSleeping · 02/03/2017 16:29

And we got a birth certificate, passport and holiday in before DD was 16 weeks.
And you usually get fast tracked with babies under 2, along with boarding just after priority boarding.
I would recommend a sling for getting off the plane - as most airlines return pushchairs in oversized baggage and there can be a bit of a wait - same as with hold bags.

EsmesBees · 02/03/2017 16:31

Agree travelling before they reach 6 months is much easier. Plus they stay where you put them so easier to keep them out of the sun/water/other holiday hazards.

yellowismyfavourite · 02/03/2017 17:21

northern glad all is going ok so far. gin hope you feel better.
I have DS wedding in September, baby will be coming but as I am bridesmaid DH is going to have to help a lot as DS can be a bit demanding at the best of times.

Had 31 week check with midwife today and I have gone from measuring below the 5th centile to measuring above the 95th, (from 26 cm to 32 cm in 3 weeks) so we have to have an AFI scan... is that just like a normal ultrasound?
These measurements are very confusing.... am happy to see baby again but it's quite stressful to keep being referred back and forwards. She did say if she did it again she would probably get a different measurement... what's the point of it if it's so inaccurate?!

Autumnsweater · 02/03/2017 20:10

yellow last week I was measured twice within 24 hours and they got a 3cm difference! I looked up the research studies on it, they showed that whilst there is a relationship between out of range measurements with foetal growth, there are loads of false positives (IE lots of women referred for ultrasound when the growth ended up being totally normal).. I guess there isn't a better way of deciding who should be sent for extra scans though and I think before they used a measurement it was all done on palpation so at least they're trying to make it more repeatable. So many other factors must affect it though, even on the same woman.

savagehk · 02/03/2017 20:40

I think fundal height is supposed to be pretty reliable if it's the same experienced midwife taking all of the measurements. Here I never see the same one twice...

Sah1987 · 02/03/2017 20:47

Lots to catch up on again!!

I'm having my DP and Sister with me for mine this time. My OH is useless, had my BF last time but she just irritated me, so hoping my sister will be better. I love my mum to bits but she would annoy me too and my dad refuses to come, so sister it is!!

I had my 28 week growth scan (low PAPP-A, thyroid, high BMI) and baby is measuring at 10th centipede, so uber small. They're not worried until 4 weeks time apparently! So we'll see what happens!!

No weddings here! My 30th in September, don't know what OH is planning xx

Autumnsweater · 02/03/2017 21:30

Me neither savage. Makes me laugh when they ask who "my" Midwife is.. I know which name I'm supposed to say but I've never seen her!

Badgerbird · 02/03/2017 22:10

Yay exile, you can tell me how it goes! We are planning a trip away in our motor home/ bus in Sept :)

Rustler74 · 02/03/2017 22:12

Not seen same midwife twice. If I'd had a midwife in my first team that I'd seen more than once, I would have thought longer and harder over changing to different hospital. I can't fault them though! Everyone I've seen was very nice.
Next Thursday first joint endocrinologist and obs clinic after growth scan at 28+6 weeks. 12 weeks to go...

yellowismyfavourite · 02/03/2017 22:20

That's interesting Autumn will look up some of those research studies

yellowismyfavourite · 02/03/2017 22:21

Although I have been really lucky and seen the same midwife each time

CinnamonTwist · 02/03/2017 22:51

Sah I love your autocorrect 😂 10th centipede...

I've been having a student midwife mostly, although my first measurements taken happened to be the only appointment 'my' midwife has done with me, so they have been taken by different people each time, hoping this time round might be able to see if there's any kind of trend. First measurement I was way under, second I'd shot up to being right on the centre line...! Next appointment is Tuesday, when I'll be 31+6

Rustler74 · 02/03/2017 23:00

Cinnamon I wondered if you'd had time to look into fb group unless we just stay on here instead xxx
I know you've not been too well so maybe when you feel better Wink
