On another note, did anyone take their OH to the midwife booking appointment or did you go on your own (if you've already had it)?

thumbsupforthesixbillion · 21/11/2016 19:31

I'm taking mine to the booking appointment, but that's specifically because I need him there to get the point across about mental health care I am going to need as I'm worried about abuse trauma and flashbacks in response to some of the medical examinations. I don't imagine he will be able to get the time off for every appointment but I feel like I need him there for the first one at least.

Popularcontrarian · 21/11/2016 19:53

DH came to a mix of appointments for DS but definitely not all. I think this time he might come along as my booking appointment is a Friday, the rest of my appointments will be on Mondays and he won't be able to make that particular day

Knittinggurl · 21/11/2016 20:07

Sorry i don't know how to reply to posts as I am a newbie!

But to the lady who asked about my scan at 7 weeks - yes it was internal. Hey tried to do an ultrasound first but couldn't see much so then did the internal scan. I wore a dress as I was expecting that. You might be fine as you'll be a bit further along than I was. But the internal bit was absolutely fine - not painful or that uncomfortable. Totally worth it anyway!

I'm not taking my OH to my booking appointment, although it's a Saturday so he could come. Never occurred to me to ask him to be honest! Assuming it will be lots of prodding and tests. He's coming to all my scans tho

Knittinggurl · 21/11/2016 20:18

Also just to say thank you so much for the lovely comments about the scan. I know there is still plenty of time for things to go wrong, but I think I do feel more reassured for the time being...

whyistherumgone · 21/11/2016 21:11

I wasn't going to bring mine for same reason Popular I figured it would just be paperwork, questions and maybe bloods. Have a ten week scan booked and he will definitely come to all of those.

Makes sense thumbsup sorry to hear you've had traumatic experiences in the past, and I hope you get them to take your concerns seriously - sounds like having DH along will help a lot in that respect.

I found it reassuring hearing your news Knitting it's always nice to hear that someone has seen the heartbeat/had a reassuring scan, makes it feel like it might actually happen for you too! It must have been amazing. Glad you found it reassuring - does it feel more real now?

whyistherumgone · 21/11/2016 21:12

JUst read that back Knitting and realised it came out a bit wrong - I find it reassuring to hear other people have been reassured, as well as being happy for whoever had the scan, of course :)

GreedyDuck · 21/11/2016 21:39

Didn't take dp to any midwife/consultant appointments last time, won't this time either. He only came to the 12 & 20 week scans, an early scan at 7 weeks, and the final appointment when we booked my c section date. I went to all my extra growth scans and day unit monitoring stuff at the end on my own. I was up at the hospital so often it would have been daft to drag him along.

Harmony test v NHS screening. If you are average age and get a low risk from the NHS then I'd save your cash (unless £500 is small change to you). If you are older, or it is important to you to have a near definitive answer, or if you get a high risk result and don't want to risk CVS/amnio straight away then go for NIPT/Harmony.

We had it and will have it again, because we are both in our forties.

BeckyNW · 21/11/2016 22:04

Thanks, all, for your views on exercise. I think I'll pick and choose my exercise classes so I just attend the ones with an instructor I feel I could have a quiet word with. I can just go to the gym the rest of the time, so I can do as much or little as I feel able. I've already told my pole dancing instructor who has been great. I really don't want to just stop doing everything!

Mouse14 · 21/11/2016 22:17

So excited to finally be joining!
Due date 15th July!!!
Had a bit of a rocky start though as last week had some stabbing pains so GP sent me straight to EPU. They were fab and soon put our minds at rest with an early scan at 5.5 weeks. All looking good! It seems real now.
No real symptoms apart from no appetite and dry eyes at night. Is that actually a symptom??
Good luck everyone!!

whyistherumgone · 21/11/2016 22:25

Thanks Greedy I'm early 30s so think I will see what the NHS one comes back with if I get that far and then go from there.

Mouse I think lack of appetite is definitely a symptom, my friend didn't have sickness at all but had a complete lack of appetite and lots six pounds in her first month of pregnancy!
I seem to be less hungry which was unexpected...

Mouse14 · 21/11/2016 22:43

I jumped on the scales today and have lost about 7pounds in the last month or so... I've put that down to the lack of wine! Talking of which, how is it possible to not even miss it?! Especially after a day like today...

Does anyone have any experience of gestational diabetes? My mum is Type 1 so I'm guessing I'm at risk of developing it.

whyistherumgone · 21/11/2016 22:55

Because Christmas is coming up, I really want Baileys!
I have a wedding soon as well, think I'll have a few sips of champagne at the toast but that will be it. I consider myself quite a light drinker so it's quite eye-opening to me how many events are suddenly tricky because I would normally be drinking!

whycanineverthinkofausername · 22/11/2016 01:29

Mouse I've been having dry eyes too but I've presumed it's been mostly down to me being a wingey drama queen who's finding everything wrong.

I've lost 5kg since I found out I was pregnant due to not lack of appetite. It's needed though as I am over weight & my weight is worrying me. I'm striving to make the best start for my child and it's sad that I start now, looking after myself. I should of done it years ago.

purplebella · 22/11/2016 09:07

Morning everyone. I think my morning sickness is going to kick in soon, urgh!
I want to get a pregnancy app on my phone but my youngest will see it bc she's always on it watching youtube!

Notyetthere · 22/11/2016 09:33

Greedyduck lol @ first page responses. I am still wondering about the folic acid though. Internet everywhere says if you have a higher BMI then you should be on a higher dose. I spoke to gp about it last week and he said they normally only increase the dosage for people with diabetes. He said he had never come across having the dosage increased for anybody else. Anyway, I was left puzzled that I decided to up my own dose to 3 tablets a day instead of one. Just in case.

After my little rant about not having any comms from midwife, she called me Friday evening and made an appointment for 28th Nov. Very exciting now.

Symptoms were very mild on Friday last week. I was nibbling on small amounts of food constantly throughout which probably helped but I could not commit to grazing at all my waking hours so the nausea got worse over the weekend that I ended up having to take yesterday off work as I was suffering from a dehydration migraine. I think I am now catching up with the fluids and back to office where grazing is a lot easier.

I have also been drinking decaf tea infused with fresh crushed ginger which I am enjoying lots actually.

Off to update the list now.

whyistherumgone · 22/11/2016 10:16

Why am I jealous of morning sickness?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?!

OOh exciting Not I have mine soon too, it feels like things are really happening now.
I'm six weeks today, no new symptoms - expected more by now but hey ho, will see how it goes. Fingers crossed all is well in there.

I am going out with friends tonight so it's my first proper test of trying to get away with not drinking. What excuses are you all using?

DamsonGinIsMyThing · 22/11/2016 10:22

Well my morning sickness had landed with full force today. Constant burping, sicky burps, threw up my water.
Felt a bit better, chanced having breakfast cos I was bloody hungry, vomited all over the kitchen floor in my mad dash to the bathroom.
Currently laid up on the sofa, going to go for a nap in a couple of hours as I'm working tonight and have got my second scan at the EPU in the morning to check for growth and viability. Feel bloody miserable.

Sasspop · 22/11/2016 10:28

I used the excuse of been on antibiotics rum, I'm not a big drinker anyway so people didn't question it.. My partner works mom-fri with no flexibility so he will probably only be able to attend the scans as men are allowed to have time off for 2antenatal appointments.. At the booking you will be asked about partners family history any medical problems so get all that info off him if he won't be there X

Sasspop · 22/11/2016 10:30

Aww sorry to hear that Damson! I keep gagging yesterday and today however I HATE been sick and will do anything to hold it in so I don't know if it's going to become to difficult to hold on soon x

whyistherumgone · 22/11/2016 10:31

Ah Damson that sounds rubbish, look after yourself. Maybe have some ginger tea or ginger flavoured sweets if you can stomach it?
Good luck for your scan.

Thanks Sass I'm thinking along the same lines. And thanks for the heads up about partner's medical history. Is it mainly hereditary diseases and conditions and things like that? I know his mum carries a cancer gene that he's been tested for but doesn't have.

DamsonGinIsMyThing · 22/11/2016 10:35

Thanks ladies. I've got some tepid water which is staying down at the mo. Think it's a combo of morning sickness mixed with nerves about the scan. Will be buying a packet of ginger biscuits on the way to work Smile

Popularcontrarian · 22/11/2016 10:47

Ugh Damson you poor thing. I can totally relate to the sicky burps, I have them all the time but no getting sick just yet.

Notthereyet I think no harm at all in upping your folic acid dose. It's interesting that the dr said they only recommend higher dose folic acid for people with diabetes...it makes me think that maybe it's something to do with insulin resistance. I think if you're of a higher BMI you can have issues with insulin and not have diabetes (think pcos) so increasing your folic acid dose would be very sensible. It's not going to do you any harm at all anyway.

I supplement with inositol which is supposed to help with insulin resistance and some recent studies are finding inositol supplementation has a protective effect against NTDs.

There are so many things to think/worry about! argh...

DamsonGinIsMyThing · 22/11/2016 10:55

Oh I went to my GP about the folic acid as my BMI is 34, she weighed me and gave me 2 months supply of the 5mg tablets straight away.

Seahawk80 · 22/11/2016 11:07

Lally mine at 7 weeks was internal. They normally give you a towel or sheet to put around you. It's not too bad, I've had 4 now this year (2 for pcos) am a bit of a pro now!
