VBAC - for anyone out there who's giving it a go....

Was just wondering how many others out there are hoping for a VBAC or VBA2+C? Have come across a couple of others since yesterday and thought it might be nice to have somewhere to compare opinions/experiences/disapproving comments from Docs & MW's!!! Maybe we can help each other achieve what we want to acheive?

Thank you! I have a lovely doula to make me brave!

I would like to have some contractions - could you send those too? Half day school for my oldest starts on Tuesday, as does playschool and I have agreed to be monitored daily at the hospital 15 miles away from Monday so the waiting is going to be inconvenient.

NattyThomasandBump · 06/01/2007 20:57

yes was on the sept thread.
im going to kings college hospital, its in camberwell. the lady i saw today at the booking in appoint assured my that the small age gap between preg will not effect my chances. as that was the only concern i had i do feel relativly positive about it.

lulu i to spent most of labour (although spontanuos) on the back following and epi. as a result my body got to 9.5cm and just would not budge any further! this time i hope to be on my feet!

lulumama · 06/01/2007 21:01

i will send you all i have gem! NTAB - i remember your thread re a small gap between pregnancies..sounds like you have a supportive hospital !

NattyThomasandBump · 06/01/2007 21:04

yes they are being amazing. so glad i dug my heels in, they tried to send me to my local hospital, and the midwife SNORTED when i mentioned a VBAC. SNORTED! cheeky mare, i think she had a preconception that vbacs were some sort of hippy idea!
i remeber your supportive posts on my thread b4, was wondering if you would perhaps be my doula on distant learning lmao!

lulumama · 06/01/2007 21:05

of course i will natty !! be my pleasure!

snorting midwife..so not a good look!

NattyThomasandBump · 06/01/2007 21:08

lulumama · 06/01/2007 21:08

of course.....

lulumama · 06/01/2007 21:08

might not answer...

feedmenow · 06/01/2007 21:13

Natty, I had a number of scans at Kings when pg with my ds so I know where you mean. How did you go about getting yourself in there? Can any of us chose any hospital and insist on being seen there?

hi there, I'm 15+1 and haven't yet decided about vbac but at my booking appt this week I was told that I would have to fight for an elective c/s and be referred to the mental health (!) team if I did want one. Is this normal? This was for St Thomas's in Central London (altho we're thinking of moving to Dulwich which would mean going to Kings too!).

I'm keen to find out why I got to 10cm and then felt no urge to push whatsoever. Active birth, etc. etc. so I'm looking forward to my meeting with a consultant midwife next month so she can talk me through my experience!

hertsnessex · 06/01/2007 21:24

Thanks lulu!

I realise it was the condensed version!!! but guessed thats how women must feel.

NattyThomasandBump · 06/01/2007 21:25

when expecting your second, did you find orgasms very painful? they feel as bad a contractions to me at the mo. is it possible its due to the small age gap?

NattyThomasandBump · 06/01/2007 21:26

yes you can choose, how many weeks are you? as it has taken 8 weeks to arrange mine. i now have 2 scans one at orginal hospital and one at kings.

lulumama · 06/01/2007 21:37

no i didn't, all seemed as it was, IFYSWIM.!!

.....lovemaking can certainly be more intense in pregnancy, due to the surge of hormones and increased blood flow to your fanjo and surrounding areas...

do you mean they are triggering contractions, or pain around your scar...have you tried different positions, to see if that helps?

NattyThomasandBump · 06/01/2007 21:42

the actual intercourse is fine, its just i a actually orgasm its cause a contraction type pain (like waves of squeezing that really bloody hurts)
seems as long as i dont, we can have sex... typical lmao

lulumama · 06/01/2007 21:44

as long as no pain in the scar area..it is probably nothing to worry about...good you are having fulfilling sex, with young babies and a pregnancy! good for you !! mention it to the snorting midwife, that will make her day !! LOL

NattyThomasandBump · 06/01/2007 21:49

lmao, oh it happens rarely!

feedmenow · 06/01/2007 22:10

Natty, about 10 weeks. Booking in with midwife on Monday, & 1st scan at local hosp arranged for 26th Jan. How did you actually go about it, and how did you find out that Kings is good for vbac?

OP posts:
NattyThomasandBump · 07/01/2007 13:10

i spoke to people. also found statistics for vbac success on a website (dont remember addy googled it) and mayday the hospital they were sending me too had one of the lowest. so i asked for a change, i went to see my gp told him i wanted to go to kings not mayday and he referred me from there. takes a few weeks and means that you dont get early bloods etc depending on how long it takes to sort out. but as this is second preg i wasnt too bothered, i know when something is wrong, and as i was in and out drs surgery with toms vaccinations and various illnesses i had BP checked while i was there.

just make an appoint with gp and ask to be referred. the booking in appoint with midwife books you in to the hospital that your doc surgery normally sends women. your gp is supposed to ask where you would like to go when you first go to "announce" your pregnancy. but they never do. this is because its costs less to send you to the hospital that the surgery is "linked" with, so they dont offer you a more expensive option. lol.

sounds complicated but you just have to know ur rights and dig your heels in

MarsLady · 07/01/2007 13:30

3flight........ The reason you may have felt no urge to push at all may have been your body taking a break. Can you explain what happened when you got to 10cm and what action was taken and what kind of time scale? Sorry, just trying to "see" it in my mind.

lulumama · 07/01/2007 17:17

goodness me 3flights...what does mental health team have to do with a VBAC...

agree with mars....if you can share a bit more about the birth first time....

not everyone gets the urge to push as soon as they get to 10 cm as mars has said....hospitals like you to labour by the book though..when each womans' body is going to labour differenlty..

hertsnessex · 07/01/2007 17:48

Hospitals like for you to push when you get to 10cm, they dont generally allow for transition which could be an hour in some cases.

As a midwife I just wonder sometimes what goes on in opther hospitals. Is it an English thing? (I am in Scotland)

Where I work, VBAC is offered to all previous C/S unless they don't want to go that route. Women with previous C/S can use the birthing pool if that is their request. They can mobilise if they want. We advise continual monitoring but if the woman chooses not to have it then it isn't a big deal. We do prefer to have a cannula in place just incase there is a problem during labour and blood is crossmatched to be available, but there isn't a big song and dance about it.

I personally think that the best place to labour is in the pool. Spontaneous onset of labour is best and women should be prepared to go beyond their due date. VBAC is the way to go where clinically suitable IMO.

lulumama · 07/01/2007 18:00

mears..you need to come and educate my hospital trust!
