HCG showing 8 weeks but scan only 6 weeks 1 day

I had a silent miscarriage earlier this year at 9 weeks but baby died at 5 weeks. I have PCOS and an under active thyroid. This pregnancy I've been monitored more closely and have been put on increased thyroxine, progesterone suppositories and Metformin. My hcg blood test came back at 97 just after my positive pregnancy test and they dated me at 4 weeks. 2 weeks later when I should have been 6 weeks I went for an early scan and all they could see was gestational sac and yolk sac. They predicted I was 5 weeks and sent me away for 10 days. Half way through this period they did a hcg blood test which showed 21444 hcg. Again dating me around 8 weeks which was in line with the first blood test. Everything seemed normal. I returned yesterday when the 10 days were up and the scan only showed a fetal pole measuring 6 weeks 1 day but with no heartbeat. I've been sent away to get more hcg bloodtests on Monday. The gynaecologist said he wasn't able to confirm viable pregnancy and that he would expect to see a heartbeat with such high hcg. Any ideas what might be going on? I had a positive ovulation test on 16th Jan and had sex that day too but not since as hubby has been away. Anybody been through similar? I'm preparing for the worse ...

I'm so very really sorry but you are almost certainly going to miscarry again. Two scans in a row, both behind for dates, are not a good sign. I don't know how out of whack the hcg numbers are, but the scan is pretty definitive. I don't really know why they are ordering more hcg tests, standard procedure at my clinic would have been to make you wait a week and have another scan, which would then tell you the answer.

You will get at least some info from the hcg test. I wish much better things for you. Hang in there.

Miscarriage still not confirmed. Currently waiting for hcg results as the last ones were high and didn't match the scan. I'm guessing they are checking if they have risen and if they haven't they can confirm miscarriage and book me in for D&C. I'm struggling emotionally as it's so upsetting to lose my second so soon after the first.

Yes it is absolutely miserable. So much loss to bear and so hard for those who have not experienced it to understand.

I had HCG back today. In 7 days it went from 21444 to 29316. It's risen but not much. I have a scan booked on Friday so I'm hoping they'll give me a conclusion. My GP is still saying it's inconclusive. I think I just need closure.

I'm sorry, that kind of info is just so unhelpful isn't it? Not conclusive either way. In the infertility blogosphere we used to call it the hope bitch. Kind of know you shouldn't hope but you do anyway. Hang in there.

Hope today gets you closure one way or another.

Thought I should update this thread in case it's helpful to others going through similar. Unfortunately it was another missed miscrriage. I'm just over 10 weeks but baby stopped developing at 6 weeks 1 day. I had the ERPC yesterday and all went well. If anyone is in a similar position my heart goes out to you. I've had a natural miscarriage and an ERPC which is the same as D&Cold so my only advice is to take the surgical option. I was scared of the general anaesthetic but it was so much easier and less traumatic. I'm hardly bleeding today and feel much better physically. The natural miscarriage was much harder and physically traumatic (blood/clots/contractions/passing the baby into a tub) so if you get the choice definitely consider the surgical option. Xxx

Oh Kelly I am so sorry. I also had an ERPC and would thoroughly recommend over the other option. Just be aware you'll get a real hormone crash on day 3/4 - be very weepy and often crampy as your body tries to get back to normal.
