hayley good god, no tea!?? How have you survived? And YY to mood swings. Mostly crying here, but I've had a couple of 'red mist' type anger flashes that were really quite intense.

QforCucumber · 04/12/2015 11:52

oh god hayley well done you but I'd have cried by now - scotch eggs have been a staple in my diet for the last 2 months haha!

Mayo we buy hellmans, its pasturised and fine.

I had a can of coke this morning, so been on decaff tea today but usually have 2 regular teas a day - alternated with decaff ones (the sainsburys own decaff is the nicest one I've found so far)

and with it being xmas time our suppliers keep sending us chocolates - the last week and next 2 weeks will be a roses/heros/quality street fuelled blur haha!

SIL had severe HG and all she was keeping down was Ice Cold diet coke, niece was born 6 weeks ago at 8lbs 3oz.

maybebabybee · 04/12/2015 11:55

I thought the risk from eggs was salmonella which if you buy free range/ lion stamped shouldn't be an issue in this country anyway?

vroc81 · 04/12/2015 11:55

Hayley go drink some tea!! I'm on half cafe or decaf coffee but only because I drink sooo much of it there is a cafetiere on my desk all day.. And I have my gingerbread lattes fully caffeinated if I find time to have one at the weekends! I also enjoyed runny eggs for breakfast this morning oh rebel me!

Yes to the mood swings but more getting irritated by stuff for no reason, my DM is visiting and apart from the being here has done nothing wrong but I'm still inexcusably annoyed with her..

Me624 · 04/12/2015 12:25

hayley you can definitely have some tea, eggs and mayo! I try to stick to 3 cups of normal caffeinated tea a day although so sometimes have a fourth if I forget how many I've had! I have tried to switch to decaf but I can't bear the taste of it. Having the odd camomile tea instead which I don't mind. Eggs as others have said are fine if lion stamped which all British supermarket eggs will be, and mayo is only a risk if it's homemade.

Seems like my weight gain is about the same as a lot of others - Trijo I'm an inch taller than you but otherwise my stats are almost exactly the same! I think I'm all boobs and bump too, so hopefully it won't be too hard to lose. Unlike you I have no marathons to motivate me - I couldn't even run for a bus Grin

TriJo · 04/12/2015 12:26

I probably haven't been as strict on caffeine as I should be - usually have 3 cups of tea a day and the odd can of Coke Zero, all coffee is decaf though and since I've got my taste for chocolate back in the second trimester I'm a little too fond of the stuff again. Could not live without my tea!

ffauxlivia · 04/12/2015 16:42

Oh Hayley bless you with your no tea and eggs - I ask for eggs to be well done if I eat out but otherwise you are good to go! Shop bought mayo is totally fine. And they recommend limiting caffeine to 200mg a day - so a few cups of tea and chocolate a day is still within limits

I have mainly switched to decaf tea though and find that real tea tastes a bit papery for me now - apart from Earl Grey. I used to hate decaf but really developed a taste for Clipper organic decaf and Yorkshire decaf - would really recommend and I get it shipped over from the UK regularly! The organic one is pricey but unlike most decaf teas the decaffeinated process is done without chemicals, and tastes better imo

Found out today I get a free breast pump on my health insurance - the Medela In-Style advanced. Does anyone have any experience of this? I'll be going back to work fairly early so want to get prepared for the minefield of pumping and storing - assuming I can breastfeed at all that is!

MyNameIsSuz · 04/12/2015 17:13

I kept on the caffeine all the way through with ds, but this time I initially cut it out completely (apart from chocolate) as I was more nervous about something going wrong, but also because ds was a little small and refluxy and I wondered if the caffeine had an effect on that. I found Twinings Everyday decaf the best!

Weirdly I've now gone off the taste of proper tea! Also, the couple of times I've decided to have a coke or a proper coffee, it's had the opposite effect to usual! Yesterday I had an exhausting day out on a visit, didn't stop all morning and bought a coffee mid afternoon. It made me completely sluggish!!!

IndomitabIe · 04/12/2015 19:59

Hi Dumdiddly, sorry to hear you're so tired. Try to take it easy!

Hi Battleships, that sounds scary. Hope he stays put.

Sounds sore, vroc. Take it steady.

Since TTC I've stuck to 2 cups of tea, with the option for an emergency 3rd/lots of chocolate. I think I read the guidance is up to 200mg/day, and that the 'average' cup of tea is 75mg.

I've avoided decaf tea since it gave me huge headaches (causal link unverified) with DS1. However, I've recently discovered the clipper organic decaf is ok and I'm now creeping back up to several cups a day (only the two caffeinated!). I have some suspicions/superstitions about caffeine that are almost entirely without evidence.

I am planning on a breakfast of runny death-eggs and cancer-bacon tomorrow with caffeinated tea on the side! Yum!

All good at the midwife today. Blood pressure is down, as was the previous reading. This is good, as my BP is naturally on the high side. And apparently there's still no glucose in my wee - after having ++ all the way through with DS and a GTT. Pretty pleased with my good old body! must be all the chocolate

MyNameIsSuz · 04/12/2015 20:15

I just fell over Sad really hurt my knee, didn't bump my stomach but pretty shaken up. Any chance I've somehow hurt the baby???

shieldbug · 04/12/2015 21:06

Suz, don't worry, baby is cushioned with lots of fluid so should be absolutely fine. Are you ok apart from your knee? Sit down, have a cuppa and some nice treat; sounds like you need it.

TriJo · 04/12/2015 21:15

Fuck. Coworker just diagnosed with chickenpox. I had a very mild dose of it at age 6 - not sure what that means for my immunity...

IndomitabIe · 04/12/2015 21:15

Shieldbug is right Suz, baby is well cushioned in there. All will be fine!

I've just got round to reading maybe's link about the ridiculous state of pregnancy advice. What a great article! I love the ending too!

dobbythedoggy · 04/12/2015 21:16

suz Hope you're okay, such a horriable feeling. I fell a couple of times when pregnant with dd and it left me shaken up both times. But our babies are very well cussioned in there, so if you didn't bump your stomach try to relax as much as you can. Any worries don't think twice about calling your midwife or labour ward for a check or reassurance.

Indom enjoy your breakfast!

I couldn't stomach tea when I was pregnant with dd and never really went back to drinking it. Never liked coffee unless in cake or ice cream form. But I am a massive hot chocolate addict. This time I can manage a cup of tea at a couple of toddler groups a couple of times a week.

ffaux no real experience with breast pumps as dd was addament she was not going to entertain the idea of bottles and I didn't have a reason to leave her. I just pumped a on the odd occations I had a blocked duct to help clear it. But I had quite a few young 10-12 weeks during my time running the baby room at work who were exclusively fed bm and never found their mums had a problem keeping us overly suplied with bm. A friend left her lo with dad from 6 weeks and bf/pumped until lo was just feeding when she was home at around a 11 months. She found having something that smelled like her lo, videos of lo on her phone and pumping at set times made pumping easiest. I know she was a pro after a few weeks back at work.

I'm getting mood swings here. Felt really hard done by a couple of nights ago as I was convinced dh was mad at me, but it was just me feeling really hormonal! Dh is well practiced at ignoring me and withdrawing at the right moment after the hormonal coil played havoc with my mood for the last few months before we started ttc. Not reached that level of hormonal fuled rage or upset while pregnant.

Think poor dd might be coming down with an ear infection. Typical, on a friday night after the gps has closed. She's been tired and a bit misserable all day, but had put it down to a busy day and late night yesterday. But she's been up twice since she went to sleep very upset and saying her ear hurts. Hopefully paracetmol and iburophen will keep her comfortable over night and I can get her an appointment with ooh or take her to minor injuries if she can cope with the journey in the morning. Don't fancy a late night run to ohh tonight. We're lucky to have a fantastic ooh team based at the local hospital, but it's such a palvour to get her out there after bed time. The last ear infection ended in a 3 am run to ohh so don't want a repeat of that!

IndomitabIe · 04/12/2015 21:17

If you had it, TriJo, you're most probably fine. However, if you are concerned I think you are allowed to absent yourself from work on full pay (except probably not if your coworker is now off), and get your immunity checked out.

Speak to your midwife/GP tomorrow, but if you had it, even mildly, you're most likely immune to it. BrewCakeChocolate for you too!

MyNameIsSuz · 04/12/2015 21:27

Thanks everyone, sure it'll be fine. Doesn't help I'm so tired and achey!

Hope your dd is ok dobby, fingers crossed you won't need to go to the ooh and you all get a decent night's sleep.

TheMshipIsBack · 04/12/2015 21:31

Yup, you're probably immune, and at this stage your baby is highly unlikely to be harmed even if you do catch it. But you should still go to the gp/midwife for an immunity check.

To cheer you up, check out the fleecy trousers I made my DS. Sewing is fun Grin

Trinpy · 04/12/2015 22:07

Love those trousers TheMShip!

Hope your dd is ok dobby. Ear infections can be so horrible for small children.

ffaux I don't have any experience of that pump but I've heard medela ones are supposed to be good. I found early in the morning the best time to pump. Also

Trinpy · 04/12/2015 22:10

Arrrgh stupid phone!

...also someone told me when my ds was born that if you introduce a bottle as soon as you feel you've got the bf sorted

Trinpy · 04/12/2015 22:12

...they are less likely to refuse a bottle. I introduced 1 bottle a day at 3 weeks and didn't have any trouble switching between the two, but everyone I know who waited until 6+ weeks ended up with a bottle-refusing baby. I think they get a preference quite early on.

Trinpy · 04/12/2015 22:15

Sorry for the multiple posts - I will be getting a tablet for xmas and hopefully that will be the end of all my confused half finished posts!

ThePug · 04/12/2015 22:43

Trinpy thanks for confirming what some friends of ours have just told us; they said to ignore midwives who say don't give bottle until 6 weeks, rather give them one at around 2 weeks and then the odd one as & when needed. I got the Medela Swing pump on an amazon deal last week as it's the one that I've been recommended over & over again. ffaux not sure the difference between the Medela models, but overall it's a trusted brand.

Feeling yucky today, woke up with a sore throat and have been sneezing and feeling shivery one minute then hot. Was working at home and had a 2.5 hour nap this afternoon which helped. Think there must've been lingering germs in the children's centre where we had our first NCT class last night. Will update more over the weekend but the class was generally good. Except both DH & I are now slightly horrified about the size and general grossness of the placenta after being shown a laminated A3 size photo of one!

gemsparkle84 · 05/12/2015 00:28

Hi everyone great to read about your food intakes etc... Here's my contribution...

I've avoided full on caffeine mainly but have allowed myself one full caffeine coffee in a day if I have fancied it. The rest of the time it's decaf. I don't drink coke really so I allow myself chocolate if and when I fancy it.

I am completely addicted to mayonnaise. I bought a 750g jar (it may even be a kilo) of Hellmanns a couple of weekends ago and polished it off over a weekend. I love the stuff. It's just the same as drinking pasteurised milk! Except lots more calories!

I've avoided pate and mould ripened soft cheese although I think if I fancied a bit now I would allow myself a bit as a one off.

With regards to alcohol I haven't had any. I think I may have a couple over the Christmas period if I fancy!

Trijo just wanted to say they look at your booking sample if you're immune to chickenpox... They did mind anyway... If not your GP should have a record. I would say if you've had it you're immune. My pregnant friend has a toddler and he recently had a bad case of chickenpox and she was totally fine!

Hope all is well tonight xx

ffauxlivia · 05/12/2015 00:34

suz hope you're feeling okay now - I'm sure just landing on your knees won't have done any harm. Lots of tea and rest for you!

thanks dobby, Trinpy and pug* for the bf advice - a friend also told me to start trying at 2 weeks, so that's reassuring to hear as most things online say 6 weeks. I also read that your DH should be the first one to try with the bottle with you out of the room, as if they can smell you they will just expect the breast.

trijo even with a mild exposure in the past you should def be immune. As mship said you can always ask your GP to test your immunity for peace of mind. They tested mine when I got shingles, even though you have to have had chicken pox to even get shingles!?!

Ooh pug looking forward to more updates - we start ours Monday! I'll only be 24.5 weeks for the first class- I would have preferred to have started in Jan but DH would have missed some - hope I don't forget everything!

indom enjoy your death-eggs and cancer-bacon Grin Yum!

MyNameIsSuz · 05/12/2015 06:36

Just to add to the whole introducing a bottle thing - I'd say two weeks is fine as long as breastfeeding is established, if the baby has a good latch and feeds well. At that stage with my ds he was still struggling to feed, falling asleep, shallow latch etc. If I'd introduced bottles then it would have made it ten times worse and we might even have had to give up bf. It's not a good idea to go by some arbitrary timing, either two weeks or six, as all babies are different and it can take a lot longer for some to learn to feed than others.
