My glow is here thanks to the miracle of a new bronzer - lots of people have mentioned how well I look, if only they could see me without the war paint on Grin

fififolle · 05/08/2015 14:14

Just had my 12 week scan and all looks good. We've got a very active baby flipping all over the place.

February '16 approaching and conquering the 12 week mark!
RhiPea · 05/08/2015 15:02

I was moved forward a few days too- we're due date buddies nectarines! What are 12+ people doing about folic acid supps? Can we stop now?

clarabellski · 05/08/2015 15:36

Congratulations nectarines and fifi.

RhiPea I was given a vial of combined vit D/folic acid pills by the midwife so was going to keep taking them until they've finished, then see about getting plain old vit D for the remainder. NHS website says it is safe to continue taking folic acid after 12 weeks.

The glow is a lie!!!!!!!

Rufus200 · 05/08/2015 16:12

RhiPea at my scan the Dr said that the spinal cord doesn't actually close till 16 weeks! Also I've just been reading that folic acid may reduce the risk of autism! My multivit has folic acid in it so I will be taking it for my whole pregnancy anyway.

HarimadSol · 05/08/2015 16:25

MayoforSam I did complain as soon as I realized what had happened. They're looking into it. It's a serious amount of information that's been handed out - full name, address, phone number, date of birth, NHS number, hospital number, DH's info. I just hope that the person who received it doesn't happen to feel like using it.

clarabellski · 05/08/2015 16:50

Lovely ladies who have already had a DC and who were working at the time - do you think it is feasible to plan to finish up work 10 days before EDD? I'm due 8 Feb and was thinking could finish up on 29 January (a Friday).

I work in an office where I'm mostly sitting at my desk all day with the odd meeting within 5/10 minutes walk away, my commute is half an hour each way (car then underground/tube).

I'll also have week off between xmas and new year to do prep stuff (and have a DM and DMIL who are champing at the bit to help).

Obviously if the parasite arrives early then all bets are off, but assuming it will get fully cooked, do you think stopping at just before 39 weeks is doable?

Cheers

clumsypots · 05/08/2015 16:55

Oh no jelly I hope you feel better soon!

Had my scan this morning all is good so off to tell the in laws now. Baby was asleep for the scan but saw the heart beat. Grin

Clara I found work became very difficult towards the end. I work in a busy clinic and had no allowances or breaks (which you are entitled to)
For this reason I finished a month before my due date.

Don't forget that you are entitled to all of your annual leave for that year, so I used this for the first three weeks, which meant my maternity leave officially only began a week before my due date. I enjoyed that time off, buying baby things, washing baby clothes and generally relaxing. You won't have that chance with your second maternity leave.

One thing to bear in mind though: if you do use annual leave to finish early, and your baby is born during this time, then your maternity leave must start on the day baby is born. So unless your employer is generous and allows you to carry over the lost annual leave, then you lose out.

Jen2104 · 05/08/2015 17:59

Flowers thats interesting about the annual leave! I didn't realise that at all! That is super useful - I have been planning on working for as long as possible like Clara but the idea of being able to relax a little and enjoy the last few weeks is very tempting! Especially as like you say you can't do that second time round!

Rufus200 · 05/08/2015 18:14

I am in such a bad mood this afternoon, just having a few really bad days where just everything is going wrong and I have a 10 week old puppy arriving in under a hour for me to puppy sit for a week. DH volunteered us at the family wedding a few weeks ago and I thought everyone was so drunk that they would forget. You know you are really grumpy when a puppy can't cheer you up!

SmashleyHop · 05/08/2015 18:29

Sorry I've been MIA ladies- Been away on holiday then came back to do lots of home improvements.

Had my scan today- Happy wiggling baby with a lovely heartbeat. I'm 12 weeks 3 days, putting me at a Valentine's baby. Feb 14th. :D I'll post a photo soon, but in the excitement the pics have gone missing. My 4 year old apparently took them off my MIL and disappeared. I know they will turn up soon however hormones took over and I ended up crying whilst tearing the house apart searching. Thankfully DH took a photo with his phone. Bless that man.

rallytog1 · 05/08/2015 18:31

Totally doable Clara - I finished 10 days before edd last time and ended up going 2 weeks overdue so wished I'd stayed longer!

Check about your annual leave - at my work they would let you take all leave you were owed at the end of your mat leave, including anything you hadn't taken from the previous year. So it's worth finding out if you'd still get your leave even if you had the baby early, as it could give you longer off with your baby.

NoMontagues · 05/08/2015 18:32

I'm going to stop taking folic acid in 2 - 3 weeks (I'm 15 weeks today) as DS had a tongue-tie which really affected his feeding before we got it sorted, and there is some evidence that taking folic acid beyond the 20 week mark leads to a higher incidence of tongue and lip tie (I wasn't aware of this last year and took folic acid throughout).

I haven't heard of the autism link rufus although funny enough I heard the same for iron during pregnancy- although those ladies in the know over on the SN boards seem fairly emphatic that all the research is leading to ASD being a genetic/ hereditary condition (not even sure if condition is the correct term).

Spanoo · 05/08/2015 19:02

Horraay for nectarines, clumsy, Smash and fifi!!!

Great news all round!

Jelly that sickness sounds so grim! It's so annoying that it can spoil the whole experience of being pregnant. You're nearly there now though - keep going strong!

Thanks for the prediction tea - I'd love a girl - obviously!

MayFlowers16 · 05/08/2015 19:42

I didn't know that about tongue tie NoMontagues I took pre-natal vitamins all through pregnancy last time. Luckily dd didn't have any tongue/lip tie (that we know of) but I might avoid taking it this time as I really want to bf again.

Great to hear more good scan news- this is such an exciting time!

MayFlowers16 · 05/08/2015 19:55

Is anyone else starting to feel better but still having food aversions? My diet is still rather beige and I'm getting a bit frustrated with myself.

eggsnbeans · 05/08/2015 20:06

Calypso - cloth nappies are so easy! Not like our parents used at all. Some councils do subsidised trial packs too :) most people buy 2or3 different types to try out, then see what they like and what fits best when bubs is born. Most popular ones are prob tots bots, itti bittis and g nappies though. There are heaps second hand so you don't even have to spend much (all mine are second hand) so look on ebay or one of the cloth fb pages. There is heaps of advice and some very friendly peoplepon the fb pages too :)

eggsnbeans · 05/08/2015 20:26

Both my Dds have had tongr and lip ties Mayflower, made bf painful for 1st 3-4 weeks but was fine after that. Haven't had them corrected but might do for no 3!

Both dds have had non stop sickness for weeks now and i'm so over it! Dd2 sleeps terribly as it is but lately she's needed attention every 40 mins. So tired!

MayFlowers16 · 05/08/2015 20:35

That's no fun eggs. Fortunately dd has been having an easy spell for the last few months. I'm still finding 6am starts difficult though. I'm so tired still.

Rufus200 · 05/08/2015 22:09

I've been reading on pubmed research papers about folic acid in pregnancy and there are completely contradictory papers, one says there is a slight increased risk of tongue tie with folic acid, another said it significantly reduced the risk of cleft palates but both studies were done in populations that would have very different environment and diets to us, the 1st was China and the 2nd was Iran! The tongue tie study only looked at 108 cases where as other folic acid studies have looked at 10,000s.
I also found the study that says it reduced the risk of autism and another that it reduces anaemia in the mother. Also found folic acid reduces the risk of premature birth.
Based on what I've read I would say that the positives of taking folic acid throughout pregnancy outweighs any small risk of tounge tie. It is a personal choice though and what I did read about tounge tie seems to be that it has a genetic component so if you have one child with it then you are more likely to have another.
I would say that taking Omega-3 fatty acids is one of the most important supplements to take! I have read a ridiculous amount of research papers on them for my previous job. They are very important in brain development but also in anti inflammatory effects on the mother! Just know that if your omega-3 capsule smells fishy or you burp fishy ness then it isn't a good enough quality oil. Good quality oil should have no fishyness to it at all!

clumsypots · 05/08/2015 22:10

may my diet is very beige too, I have never eaten so much bread in my life but green stuff and citrus is just not happening.

I really struggled with cloth nappies last time but my dd went to nursery at just before 3 months and they wouldn't use them so I had to buy both types and eventually just gave up on the cloth. I am debating whether to try them again this time as I will actually have maternity leave so will get the use out of them.

goldmaple · 05/08/2015 22:30

Had my scan today! Cute little baby measuring 12+4. I had to bring both DC and tech was huffy but the DC were well behaved! Only took 15 mins so I guess baby was cooperative as well!

I will post a picture if I figure out how!

I am still feeling terrible! It usually passes by week 15. I only really want plain carbs... Poor family, I can't stand to cook much

Good luck to all the upcoming scans!!

Would someone add me to the stats:
Goldmaple 30 #3 due feb 14/2016
