Inspired by the ladies in the October ante-natal club thread but not wanting to clog it up with incessant HB chatter, I thought I'd start a little thread for anyone planning a home birth this year!

I thought it would be a nice place to share tips, advice, experiences and generally have a chat about it all!

I'm due DC2 in early October and am hoping, all risks considered to have a home birth!

Love to hear from anyone else!

Congratulations Missmakes!!!! Lovely birth story :) xxx

toadierocks · 06/04/2015 21:28

Ah congratulations MissMakes on your new little boy! I hope you've had a lovely Easter with your new little bundle of joy and thank you for sharing your story - makes me really think that a home birth for me is the way to go, just think it would be so lovely to just get into your own bed afterwards!

scatterbrainedlass · 07/04/2015 09:54

Wow, just catching up and there are some great stories Smile

I didn't realise you were allowed to delay the jab for placenta delivery, if all goes to plan I'd hope to be able to feed straight after birth and was hoping that would help it deliver. Something else to take into consideration.

What's delayed cord clamping, and what are the benefits? Never heard of it before. So much to learn!!

BrixtonBunny · 07/04/2015 10:04

Missmakes that's such a beautiful story! Thank you for sharing.

I think my waters have gone this morning as every time I get up I get a little "gush" so will be keeping a close eye. I'm 39+6 so it could well be the start of things...

Hi all, just feeding the milk monster now so apologies for bad one handed typing.

Delayed cord clamping means they wait till al the bloody from the placenta is back in baby, there's no reason why they can't do it apart from maybe very serious complications. They just checked it to make sure it had stopped, 15 mins tops.
I had skin to skin, could have done a breast crawl ( where baby latches themselves on but it was very uncomfortable in the water once I'd realised what was in it (sorry, Tmi!) so got out and fed for a bit on the sofa, then once I felt an urge to poo, the midwives got me to sit on a kidney bowl in the loo. Placenta came really easily, it's not a nice feeling mind you, not as bad as another baby but nearly! Mine was to quote the midwives 'huge!' and his cord very thick. Very quickly over with (unlike his head Blush) and it actually fell down the loo! The poor midwife had to go fishing!

I'm glad I didn't have to have the injection but I was totally fine with having it if needed As I didn't want any problems.

A few things for after which I am now realising..I had a box of clothes for me, massive pants, jogging bottoms ans a vest etc, things for baby too, make sure your partner knows where it all is as I was do wiped out and having to desscribe where everything was when they were in a tis looking for towels and knickers etc was annoying. Also, I haven't done this yet but have a few maternity towels with some witch hazel or just slightly damp, lavender or tea tree oils are good too, in a Buffy nag inches freezer, to sit on that evening...

I won't go into details but I still can't sit down, after having a csection and the recovery from that being awful, I would say that of course this is a thousand times easier but I had underestimated just how much things down there would hurt..

He's lovely though and doing really well, this birth has totally made up for the way I felt after my daughter. I think it's actually made me appreciate the way she arrived more, in a funny way. I feel like I've accomplished something, just knowing that he was born here is so lovely too.

Good luck to you all with your plans, however theses babies arrive its so worth it! I'm sure I will check in to see how everyone is doing as I'm spending a lot of time feeding this one over the next few weeks.

scatterbrainedlass · 07/04/2015 13:26

Awww, sounds amazing missmakes! Don't worry about the typing, mine's awful today and I have 2 hands!! Just wondering what a 'Buffy nag' is?? lol

missmakesstuff · 07/04/2015 19:20

Ha! Jiffy bag! Stoopid phone...

AbsInTheClub · 08/04/2015 23:31

missmakes, many congratulations! Hope the downstairs soreness eases soon.

37 weeks here, they have delivered my home birth kit, so looks like we are all set! (Ideally not just yet though, I haven't finished washing nappies and stuff!)
I don't actually feel close anyway.

Fattycow · 09/04/2015 11:39

Can I join in as well?

catellington · 09/04/2015 12:02

Congratulations miss makes! Fantastic!

I am 40+3 and feeling fed up as I keep having nights where I have regular contractions, not terribly painful but enough that each one wakes me up. Then they subside into nothing. Head is not engaged either I can feel lots of head and midwife says 3/5 palpable. So I'm also worried there is a hand or something stopping her descending.

Also despite two late growth scans which showed everything is absolutely fine they have referred me for another one just to tick boxes, which just feels like moving the goalposts again as I never feel they are really happy to say yes it's ok for a home birth.

Am really hoping I go into labour before the next scan, I don't have the date yet so don't even know when that is!

Sorry to moan.

Fattycow · 09/04/2015 19:05

What is this home birth kit I keep seeing mentioned? I never heard of that before!

Beesandbutterflies · 09/04/2015 19:31

We didn't have a kit, they bought everything with them at the time, sounds exciting though!! Smile

ovumahead · 09/04/2015 20:22

Hi everyone can I join? I'm coming up to 18 weeks with my second. First birth experience was horrendous and I don't want to repeat it at all (very long labour, back to back presentation - literally a massive pain in the arse! No pain relief, 17 hours of full on contractions, got to 10 cm then had an emergency cesarean). Recovery was horrible. That was 7 years ago.... Now wanting a home birth, midwife is supportive, I have a doula booked already who is lovely, and planning to go to hypnobirthing training of some kind. I'm still terrified of the whole idea but hoping the hypnobirthing will help with that! Doula has a birth pool which she will lend us - laboured for 4 hours in a pool before and it was by far the best bit of the whole experience.

ovumahead · 09/04/2015 20:24

Also it is just brilliant reading your birth stories - I find this very helpful, inspiring and therapeutic! Keep them coming!

missmakesstuff · 09/04/2015 20:31

catellington I had almost exactly the same as you, on off contracting in the night, wasn't even sure it wasn't just bh. Ds only 2/5 engaged 48 hrs before. It will all be doing something! I was going to wait till at least 42 weeks by my dates. Ds was born at 40+5 by mine.
I also had loads of growth scans, nothing ever appeared that was a worry, I just saw it as a bonus and went in to see the consultant with a big smile and AIMS research in hand...you'll be fine.

Beesandbutterflies · 09/04/2015 20:37

Ovumahead have you read ina may gaskin's guide to childbirth?
So many lovely inspiring both stories in it SmileSmile

Beesandbutterflies · 09/04/2015 20:38

Oh and we must be due date buddies! 8th sept? Exciting!!!Smile

ovumahead · 09/04/2015 21:20

bees I'm due 12th September! :-)

I read ina may gaskin when I was pregnant before, found it reallyiinspiring, but when I had my awful birth experience it actually made me feel like I'd really failed terribly! I feel slightly phobic of her book now...

Beesandbutterflies · 09/04/2015 21:33

Aw that's a great dd, I'm sorry you feel that way about the book Hmm I guess we all have our triggers x

ovumahead · 09/04/2015 21:41

I know! Crazy. I guess now I'm pregnant it may be worth revisiting..

catellington · 09/04/2015 22:04

missmakes thank you for the words of encouragement, I will try to look on the bright side and think it is all progress!

Am having another batch of the strong bh now, regular every 4-5 minutes but not painful. Very strange.

Beesandbutterflies · 10/04/2015 06:40

Not at all crazy ovum! If the book doesn't help you then ditch it and move on
Fwiw You didn't fail at anything though. Xx

ovumahead · 10/04/2015 07:23

Thanks bees took me ages to come to terms with it. Every time a friend had a decent birth I felt such mixed emotions - so happy for them, but simultaneously so gutted. Now I'm a lot more level headed about it! I think it's the risk of building up too much expectation of having a certain kind of birth - on the one hand you need to, on the other hand, you shouldn't!

Beesandbutterflies · 10/04/2015 07:35

My opinion is that if your body made a human being then bought it into this world by any means you are a goddess SmileSmile whatever your choices/lack of choices/whatever happened or didn't happen. But women aren't made to feel this way which is so wrong.

I think (not that it matters what I think at all!) every woman should plan for the birth they want because if they don't there is no chance they'll get it, at least planning you might get it or get closer to getting what you want.

It's weird because even my with my lovely birth I came away from it with issues and anxiety for this time (my problem is midwives due to my experience of them after the birth) maybe us second time mums have a built in need to do things differently a second time and use it to heal.

Did you say you're having a doula? I really wouldn't be without mine, a birth essential for me Wink
