Hello All

Hope I am correct in beginning a thread for July 07. BFP today (23rd October) and EDD 2nd July 07.

By way of a brief introduction; live in the South West, work part-time, have DD aged 5 and DS who is almost 3. Have been incredibly lucky this time as made decision to try for third and hey presto seem to have achieved it on first attempt (much to DH disappointment if you know what I mean!!).

Look forward to 'meeting' you and sharing this amazing experience with you.

Hello all, and hello to all newcomers. I have a question, could someone please explain to me what spotting is? This may sound daft and sorry if TMI but i had a little bit of pink discharge this morning, since then i've noticed tiny streaks of blood after i've been for a wee. Is this anything to be worried about?

3flightsofstairs · 29/11/2006 10:22

Good news about everyone's scans Have just had CVS arranged for 18th Dec, hopefully fingers crossed everything will be fine at the next hurdle and I'll be able to calm down a bit.

I've not been feeling too sick (sorry ms-ers!) but I am carbs queen - cake, mice pies and toast, I'm with you Tutter My sister had me hanging my head out of the window last night by roasting red peppers [throw up emoticon]

Now have to decide what to do about Christmas as we live in London but are going to Edinburgh for the holidays. Genetics-CVS lady told me to prepare myself for the worst and think about what we would do 5 days before xmas if it was bad news. So should I book tickets or not? Hmm. She wasn't very positive!

Thanks firststar, i know i'm prob worrying over nothing and know others have also been through this, but i have no idea what is 'normal' or not. There isn't a lot of blood but it is red, i'm 7weeks and 2 days so i don't think it is implantation bleeding. i'll see how it goes today and maybe see doc tomorrow if it is worse. I was went for a long walk yesterday with my 13mo dd in her backpack and wonder if that might have caused it. does that constitute heavy lifting??

Early riser - Several times I have read if you get spotting go and see the doctor. Spotting is really ANY spots of brown or red blood. So you have been spotting. Red is even more a case for going to see the doctor, but mine got be booked in for a scan with just brown spotting last pg. If I were you I'd ring the surgery and ask to speak to the doc, then hecan get you booked in for an earely scan to make sure it's OK. Also they will say that resting doesn't make any difference but I personally think you should rest after spotting, cos I did last pg and it went away each time, and at least you know you've done what you could. Also it might be a problem with implantation in which case my common sense would tell me that rest would help.

In my experience it could well be the walk with backpack as last pg I bled/spotted about 4 or 5 times and each time was either after I'd lifted something heavy or one time when I went for a brisker walk than usual.

here is an article on Midwifery Today which might be of interest:

At Risk For Miscarriage
by Valerie El Halta

Following are suggestions for preventing miscarriage which I have found to be very effective both personally and professionally:1. Refrain from sexual relations or any sexual stimulation when any spotting has occurred, now and during the time of your normal menses thereafter.2. Take 3 grams of citrus bioflavinoids daily to strengthen the immune system and capillary walls. Avoid all other over the counter medications or medicinal herbs. Please remember that if an herb has a medicinal effect, it is acting as a drug. Many of the stronger herbs act as abortifacients.3. If spotting has occurred, complete bed rest is advisable for the next three days. When spotting ceases and if no cramping is felt, complete bed rest is usually no longer necessary. You should continue to rest for two hours in the afternoon with feet elevated. Extra rest is essential, and taking an afternoon nap should become a habit.4. If you have had several previous children and your uterine tone has become lax, it is a good idea to raise the foot of your bed to prevent pressure on the cervix.5. Avoid hot baths and showers. Do not sleep on a heated waterbed or use electric blankets, all of which may increase bleeding.6. Avoid lifting, especially toddlers and other living things.7. Avoid using caffeine (coffee, tea, cola drinks, etc.).An inevitable abortion cannot and should not be prevented, but even so, you will have peace of mind knowing that you have done everything possible to prevent it. If you experience heavy bleeding, or bleeding with the passage of clots or cramping, please call us immediately so we may properly advise you or refer you for medical care. In most instances of miscarriage, a D&C operation is not necessary. However, if the miscarriage is incomplete, this procedure may be advised. We want to help all we can during this time, so please do not hesitate to call. We are here for you whether the need be physical, emotional or spiritual.

Saf1 and bookign appointments. My doctor told me not to book in until 13-14 weks after my scan; the receptionist said beore the scan but not until 11-12. I called the community midwifes who said they didn't know why the doctors and surgeries said this as they like to see expectant Mums as soon as they know they're pregnant. I do fid it odd that some make you wait. If it's your first your going to have loads of questions and need advice on many things.

If it's your second second then you know that no advice in the worled will make you ditch the constand stodge and fat for something healthy. I'm currently addicted to frid egg sandwiches. I even bought a bloody pot needle the other day - I haven't eaten one for years! Can't see the evolutionary advantage fo that one!

earlyriser · 29/11/2006 12:43

thanks guys! that really helps. I'll definitely manage 1 as DP is away for 3 weeks but as for the complete bed rest, not a chance with a 13mo old. even naps are a bit hit and miss these days but will rest up as much as i can. it's all so scary and seems much more than last time. The reason i use the backpack is because my dd is much happier in it than the buggy, but will certainly give it a rest from now on. cheers!

earlyriser · 29/11/2006 12:47

what is it with the cravings for fatty, salty, carbo loaded food? I feel a constant need for hangover food and i usually eat so healthily. But given the option of an apple or hobnob i know which one i'm going for

Dophus · 29/11/2006 12:50

Weird isn't it, I'm noramlly a healthy eater, but really can't face it at all. Just the thought of a salad makes me feel sick.

I guess half a million years ago it would make sense to bulk up on carbs, fat and protein in early pregnany whilst you could. It just leaves us in modern society as fat as pigs. Although so far I haven't gained hald as much weight as I should have done given the sheer quantity of crap that I'm eating. LAst time I put on a stone by 14 weeks

dewmeadow · 29/11/2006 13:05

hi all!!

SOrry to hear about spotting/bleeding Kyte - hope all is well - thinking of you.

I went to the doctor yesterday and the next time I see someone will be my scan at about 12- 14 weeks. Think Im about 6 weeks +3 - thats about coffee bean size, isnt it?

Are you definitely advised not to lift in the first trimester? This is my third and Ive either forgotten that or never knew that. I wonder why.

Lots of sticky baby dust to everyone (I liked that, whoever said it to Kyte)

dewmeadow · 29/11/2006 13:06

O yes, craving cheese on toast, whatever thats all about, and cant face coffee, eggs, bacon so far

(((Nosey emoticon)))
Do you guys have scans before you get your NHS (12 week one)?

Dophus · 29/11/2006 13:40

Not me

Tutter · 29/11/2006 13:40

liesel, i always get a 6 week one because of my history (ep and mcs) - don't think anywhere in the UK would scan before 12 weeks as standard

what's up btw?

Hi, Sorry for those that have had spotting - this whole thing is such a worry isn't it! I am totally with all of those who are wanting to eat stodgy food. My MS has kicked in now and it seems the only food I want is cheese, mayonnaise, bread etc. Just dont want salad at all, but have to say reading the word apple in an earier post made me very interested!!! May have to go and get one...

3flights - if you dont mind me asking, what are your % chances of the baby having a problem. I've got a 25% chance of our baby having a fatal condition and I'd be quite annoyed if my doctor was overly negative. Sorry if your chances are higher . I'm not going to be able to have a CVS this side of xmas but I am having an early scan on the 13th Deceember where I hope they will see some indication of the condition (the condition causes hydrops, so there may be some fluid build up by 9 weeks). If it were me, I'd definately book the tickets for your trip to Edinburgh at xmas (which is where I live by the way if you fancy popping in! ). I unfortunately gave birth to my second DS on the 18th December last year at 21weeks (he had inherited) and we still managed to celebrate xmas, albeit a sad one. The alternative was to sit at home on our own with DS1 which wouldn't have been right. Anyway, sorry if I sound preachy about this - I dont mean to!!

earthtomummy · 29/11/2006 14:32

Sorry I've not been around for a while. I just seem to fall asleep at 8 every eve...Tutter, saw yr. preg. thread and so pleased for you. Where I used to live in London you got no scan till 20 wks, which was terrible - esp. if you're really sick, because at least the 12 wk. scan gives you something to look forward to. I'm wondering how long I can hold off telling our other children re. this baby - the youngest won't notivce, the middle might but DS at 5.5 is def. aware of stg and refuses to kiss me when I've been sick "in case he catches my tummy bug". Would prefer to wait till the scan has been done, but am not sure he won't guess before then. What are other people with kids doing?

Chooster · 29/11/2006 14:33

Just read that back and it sounded wrong - obviously I dont hope they see signs of the condition at my first scan, but if the baby has inherited, I hope they can detect signs at that stage
