Thanks every for your maxi cosi car seat tips and explanations Smile

Luckystar82 · 16/01/2015 21:30

Thanks LaLa for book recommendations - will check them out Smile

Re: parenting styles, I don't personally like the sound of Gina Ford's school of parenting, I started to read the free sample on Kindle and it just sounded a bit calculated to me (and dare I say cold). I'm a more free and easy sort of person so AP going with flow might suit me better. That's just my opinion of course and I will probably change it when I actually become a parent and struggle to cope!

Have any mums on here NOT read any parenting books and just winged it?

Naturegirl82 · 16/01/2015 21:33

lucky me and Dh made a point in not reading any (apart from the quick flick through in the book shop) as we wanted to make our own minds up about things. We just did some reading on set things (e.g. weaning etc) when we got to that point. Apart from that we went with the flow.

Thepurplegiraffe · 16/01/2015 21:53

I bought a book but never got very far with it, there was just never the time.
I have found out most of what I need to know from close friends and a similar group to this one Smile
Might need help with the toddler stage though...

WiIdfire · 17/01/2015 06:30

Number - I've been bumped up to the 1st of July, just haven't been able to change the stats on my phone.

Thanks for all the car seat help - its a minefield! So many options. I start looking, get overwhelmed, then go and have a hot chocolate and give up. :-)

ohlordyplordy · 17/01/2015 07:35

Now that I've had my scan, can someone please remind me who I need to message about the fb group?

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 17/01/2015 07:47

Lucky we winged it! The books just scared me as it seemed like a lot of pressure to do particular things at a particular time. If there was anything I really needed/wanted to know I looked it up online or asked friends who'd already had babies. I bought 'the baby led weaning cookbook' at weaning time (this was the part of parenting I found most stressful!).

broodylicious · 17/01/2015 07:54

wantto, I had a corsa when Poppy was first born and the maxi cosi fit really well in there. Mine was a three door so bit of a ball ache to keep having to do the seat up and down but no big issues. I swapped after about a year to a four door Peugeot 307 (think someone said this is what they've got?) and the maxi cosi still fit beautifully until we were ready at about 16 months to change her into the Cybex. Going to be swapping car again in a few months and will probably go the whole hog and get a people carrier style thing complete with roof rack oh how I miss the days of my beautiful Mini Cooper!

One thing that just occurred to me with you ladies looking at pushchairs... Don't buy one until you've made sure it will collapse down and fit in the boot of your car! Sounds obvious but we had our mind set on one brand and it wouldn't fit in my boot - luckily the lady in the shop (we didn't buy it from there in the end, but wanted to test one near our car and john Lewis is in the shopping centre away from the car park) suggested loads of different, slightly smaller ones and we ended up with the quinny.

broodylicious · 17/01/2015 07:58

lucky, we winged it still are! After reading the gf book, we decided we wanted to rely on instincts so blissfully ignored any books that were donated or recommended to us. It's all personal choice though as I say. A definite must read when baby is ready for weaning though is the one mentioned on blw. The weaning bible, we called it!

lordy, if you PM natanotherone, you can join. Make sure you put your pic on the fb page because I'm on the app and haven't seen your bubba yet! Makes it so real now doesn't it? Congrats hun x

ohlordyplordy · 17/01/2015 08:43

Thanks Broody, i'll message nat.
Yeah it finally feels real now that I've seen the little monkey. I'd half convinced myself that there was going to be nothing in there, as I've had no actual physical sickness, just feelings of nausea, hunger and tiredness, which I was telling myself could be in my head - daft I know! Sure, I'll post a pick of bubba when I get on the fb page Smile

WantToGoingTo · 17/01/2015 08:48

Thanks for the advice broody! Yes mine is a 3 door... DH has a 4 door Peugeot 206 but tbh it is used most of the time as a van, seats permanently down, it has dry rot and is full of rubble! Even with cleaning I am not convinced it is baby friendly haha! I don't think I will change car for a couple of years unless it breaks down so really need to find car seat that fits and buggy that will fit in my tiny boot!

So fed up of all this seeing now. 3 times last night :( and the constant gas, diarrhoea/constipation malarkey. Why can't bowels just act like normal?!

Off to go try find some clothes today (again!) it is getting desperate as I am now down to only 3 dresses I can wear to work. Been wearing the same 3 for the last 3 weeks! Fx my next click and collect will seal the deal...

Happy Saturday!

13+1

broodylicious · 17/01/2015 08:51

Haha! I remember one of the girls on another thread saying she was terrified due to lack of symptoms. All good now you know everything is fine and dandySmile dh said to me while we were waiting for my scan "you know there's a baby in there, you've been so sick.... If you're not pg, well, you're very seriously ill". Erm. Thanks?!

ohlordyplordy · 17/01/2015 08:57

haha broody, way to make you feel better!

SophieBarringtonWard · 17/01/2015 09:16

broody what are you thinking of going for? We currently have a Nissan Almera, so pretty small, won't be able to fit DC3 in there...

TTCMrsF · 17/01/2015 09:53

Ohlordy, glad your scan went well. Exciting isn't it. Broody it may have been me saying I was completely symptomless and worrying about it!

Had my scan on Tuesday (after early private at 7+2) and was 13+5. I was more worried than excited really as I was so symptom free I was getting scared what if between 7 and 13 weeks thing have gone wrong. As so as screen showed a big baby (rather than a 1cm "jellybaby" seen at 7weeks) I was so happy - I was def growing a baby!!! Sonography soon also said lovely heartbeat and phew much more relief.

I've had such a fabulous lucky first trimester, hope it states that way. Although at booking I told my midwife I was v well and she basically told me well everyone has a horror pregnancy or birth story!!! So wait etc. Umm thanks for that.

So going to a car supermarket today to have a look around. I'm not ready for a people carrier car yet (I'm prob scared of driving big cars!) and as its first baby we'll be ok for a while yet. But oddly boot space is gonna be a key driver now lol. Any recommendations? Defo 5 door, smaller family car? I currently have a seat ibiza but have driven a Leon. Thinking Audi A3, or BMW 1-Series as they are small ish!!!! Any others should consider / look at?

Need to join the fb group too although I'm not a big fb user.

gluenotsoup · 17/01/2015 10:24

Congratulations to all those with good scans, it's so lovely to hear about them all, and pick up all the excited vibes.
We wing parenting too ! With dd 1 I didn't read any books, just went off advice and guidance given by mw, hv, and other mums. Somewhere in that mix we did and still do what feels right for us, and take our cues from instinct and knowing our child. However, every baby and parent is different, so I go with the theory that you need to be in tune with what you believe to be the right way for you, and work towards it while being flexible and open minded. The same theory went for childbirth too, and is the approach I will go with this time too. I have pretty open about dd 2 as she has very serious and complex disabilities, including being tube fed, and I think our experiences with her have juSt reinforced that babies just don't read the books ! The only thing that works with her is trial and error and learning along with her, so I feel quite relaxed about just taking things as they come and not having hard and fast expectations. Sorry, that turned out longer than I intended.Confused

Cars - we had and still have a maxi cosi cabriofix with easy base and a bugaboo cameleon. They have fitted in all sorts, from the micra I had at the beginning, but i had to take the wheels off and dh then had a Honda accord, also we had a BMW 3 series estate, which I found too low and it hurt my back, now have an suv, Honda crv and love it. I would recommend the height as it's so much easier on your back, and the boot space is huge. We do need to fit a wheelchair in their too, but it folds in two parts like the bugaboo.

14 plus 6, still knackered and bloated looking in the morning, more bump like later in the day. Going out to a restaurant tonight with dh, will be such a treat to a have a few hours just to ourselves Smile

Number3cometome · 17/01/2015 10:39

Morning ladies just off to football and it's cold!! I cried this morning; because OH said I took his fork haha

I don't have a style of patenting, I guess because I have always gone back to work early I have just tried to quickly set a routine but other than that I would say I am strict about some things but chilled about others. Not sure my kids would agree haha

Bustherb · 17/01/2015 10:56

Hi everyone, hope all is ok. Haven't had my NT results back yet, it's been 10 days since I had them done , I take it that its a good thing?xx

MisterSafetyCatchIsNotOn · 17/01/2015 10:58

TTCMrsF we have a Toyota corolla which we find to be a fab small family car (and affordable which was our main priority at the time!). We've had it 3 years and has been pretty reliable, 5 doors, boot space adequate but not huge (as it is quite a small car), it's been fine with 1 dc but might struggle going away for a week with travel cot, buggy etc and 2 car seats in the back Confused. I don't really know anything about cars though!

Just got my nuchal screening letter, low risk 1:100000 ! Last time was I think in the 10,000s so 10 x better despite being 3 years older, I would love to know why that is! It only took a week as well so I am happy Smile

Congrats on the good scans!

ohlordyplordy · 17/01/2015 11:31

Thanks MrsF, glad yours went well too. Yeah, It's so exciting and a huge relief at the same time. I didn't have an early scan, so it felt like i'd been waiting a lifetime!
We have a fiat 500 so there are few prams that will fit. We had a drive down to Kiddicare at Peterborough over the Christmas break and tried the one we had our eye on, to check it fits, and with a seat down it does. We've seen one for sale 6 month old that we're going to view today, so fx it is in as good condition as the pics look - it's a bargain.

Zampa · 17/01/2015 11:35

Also off to football Number. Can't wait to take the lo when it's old enough.

Problem is we're doing so badly ATM. Usually I'd drink through it but that's not currently an option!

Bust I'd say no news is good news.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 17/01/2015 11:43

Are any of those off to the football in the East Midlands?!

Naturegirl82 · 17/01/2015 12:12

If you are looking at buying a new car, check the seat spacings as well as the boot space as rear facing car seats can take up a lot of room which may mean less room in the front. We have a new mazda 3 (loads of boot space not so much back seat space) and new renault clio (smaller boot need to pop one wheel off our uppababy but they have very wide rear wheels but loads of back seat/front seat space). Just something else to check. We hadn't thought of it but it means Dh (6 ft 2) doesn't really fit in the passenger seat in the mazda with the car seat behind him but is fine in the clio even though it's smaller.

SparklyPenguin · 17/01/2015 12:32

Hi all! Hope everyone's having a good Saturday. I'm having a very baby-centric day, waiting in for my pram to be delivered today. Also received my 'baby on board' badge in the post (very much needed- I nearly fainted on the bus this week), and my Down's test results (1:1800 so low risk) and my prescription exemption card. And finally the news that a very dear friend of mine, who lives far away, is in the early stages of pregnancy after 2 failed IVF attempts- now all my anxiety is for everything to be ok for her!
Ladies going to football today- have fun and stay warm! I'm off to a match in midweek, my first one of 2015, and can't wait!

Mrsc020987 · 17/01/2015 12:40

I am so glad we are on car seats, I literally had a melt down a dh yesterday about his pride and joy and how it wont fit 3 car seats in the back, already have 2 britax isofix forward facing in the back, and no space left really, half a seat if that! So no way a carrier will fit in beside it. Its a Mercedes e220 and big, I've read taking them out of the isofix and using the belts will give more space. Sort of defeats the purpose of spending a fortune on seats? But the only other thing I seen was a 3 seat isofix thing but still no use as baby would be able to go in but need to have a full pram at all times as it isnt a carrier oh and its £1700 so no chance. Changing car isn't option as just go it, what with finance etc.
