Don't worry you lot!

As they say, when you go into labour you hand over your dignity, - may as well now start getting used to the gross details!

We can all go back to being prim and proper ladies afterwards!!!

CattyB · 23/10/2006 12:29

Since it was a male doc who said that oral prostaglandins (the stuff in sperm thats meant to bring on labour) are as effective as those applied directly I don't give it that much credit

fatbetty · 23/10/2006 12:30

Just wondering if any of you have rented TENS machines. If so, where did you rent them from. The hospital I had my other two at rented them out - but this new hospital doesn't. Only just realised that I should probably rent one then.

Bethbe · 23/10/2006 12:39

Alcohol as pain relief!

I don't know if any of you can help me, but I'm trying to find out about use of Alcohol as pain relief for the first stage of labour and can't find a thing about it!

If I feel like it I'm planning to down a half a bottle of wine (maybe more if it goes on too long), or perhaps take the odd shot! I can't find any information to say that I shouldn't........can anyone help?

Alternatively, - does anyone know how to start a thread? I just can't figure it out!?

Charleesunnysunsun · 23/10/2006 12:48

Fatbetty our local Tesco rent them at the pharmacy dept and i think boots do aswell if that helps.

NatalieJane · 23/10/2006 12:54

Ah Catty, you may well be on the nose there!

Bethbe, I don't know a thing about using alcohol as pain relief, but I would expect that for as long as the baby is still attached to the placenta, all of the usual things should be avoided? I suppose it would depend on just how far off you are to actually giving birth, and how long it takes for your body to pass any food/drink through to the placenta? To start a thread, look at the very top of the page, there is a link next to 'find discussions' called 'by topic' click that and then click the topic your question best fits, then read through from the top and somewhere it will say 'start a new conversation here' click that and away you go

I have just been to get dressed, it all feels a bit damp down there but nothing is actually dripping out now.

Bethbe · 23/10/2006 13:04

Thanks NJ!

I suppose the question does look a little irresponsible, but I did do a LOT of research on alcohol consumption during pregnancy and both me and my DH decided that moderate amounts were okay,

  • even beneficial in some cases (i'e bitter contains vit B and folic acid, - a shot of whisky can make the baby sleep at night - giving you rest, keeping you calm and therefore not passing anxiety onto LO etc.) - but obviously each person has to decide for themselves!

I'm certain that wine will have a calming effect and prefer it 100 times to pethidine (which also crosses the placenta!) but there really is no info out there............

NatalieJane · 23/10/2006 13:12

Yes Beth, thinking of it that way, I would rather the baby had a bit of wine with me, than pethadine again!

I haven't stopped drinking completely throughout the pregnancy, I have had one or two glasses of wine (or the equivalent in lager) every weekend, I did the same with DS, even the midwife said that was fine!

HopingCat · 23/10/2006 13:20

Wow! People have had babies! Many many congratulations Welshgal and Meandmyboys. I'm so thrilled for you, and it makes me feel like my LO could come early too if yours both did. I can't wait (although this could be because I've never experienced labour pain before).

I'm 38 weeks now, and LO seems to have periods of intense activity. His/her bottom sticks out the top of my bump, and I can feel weird scary movements down below that make it feel like baby is about to burst out! Anyone else getting this, and does it mean I may not have to wait another 2-4 weeks?

Bethbe - The program that is on tonight was filmed at the maternity unit I am going to. I can't decide whether to watch it or not!

NJ - I still feel quite fruity too, but everything is not as fun as it once was due to bump getting in the way. Not really sure how people can try sex to get baby moving, unless it doesn't need to be 'enjoyable' sex

Bethbe · 23/10/2006 13:24

Oooops! I'm being attacked on the new thread I posted.......I didn't mean to sound like an alcoholic, or irresponsible!

I drink only 1-2 glasses of wine a week, and the occassional half pint, but they're making me out to be permenantly pissed!

I regret ever asking, - but I do still want information - genuine links to research etc.

The plan never was to arrive at the maternity ward pissed!

It's certainly something people feel strongly about so I should have been a bit more careful with the wording perhaps!

Oh well, - hopefully it'll die down, and perhaps I'll get some proper info!!!

fatbetty · 23/10/2006 13:42

Would having alcohol have an effect on getting other pain relief - like an epidural (if you wanted to go down that road).

I can just picture the delivery ward and the lined up shots of tequilla . Sounds like a good idea to me!!!

NatalieJane · 23/10/2006 13:48

I don't think the idea is to get as pissed up as you can, it would be more usefull just to relax you a bit, but I wouldn't have thought that it was a good idea to actually put it into practise. Maybe if you are a choco-holic some nice chocs might go down better? Or anything else that would help you relax. The theory of it though does sound like almost common sense, but I think it would be complicated when it comes to other forms of pain relief, and if anything should go wrong and you needed a general or something, I don't think alcohol would mix well.

TBH as well, there are lots of different, possibly 'safer', things you can do to ease the long starts to labour, even simple things like hot water bottles or a warm bath would help.

Bethbe · 23/10/2006 13:50

HC: That programme takes place in the maternity unit where my cousin works. She says that the midwives there massage lavender oil into womens legs when they are in labour - can't imagine my lot doing that, - so think you must be in good caring hands.......

Charlee: Thanks very much for helping me out on that other thread! Didn't expect to get such a dramatic reaction - only searching for info....

MyGirl, the rest of my show has always been greeny very mucus like, not jelly but thick, this this morning was a creamy colour but was a 'proper' liquid, it was literally dripping down my leg, not lumpy or anything... so sorry to anyone who is feeling a bit queasy!! LOL I can't remember/didn't see my waters breaking last time so no idea what sort of colour or consistansy(sp?) they should be, but I think I'd have lost some more by now if it was my waters, like I said it is damp down there now, but not dripping.

I also thought that orally anything would just be digested, but I am sure I read that it is likely to have more of effect to induce a labour orally than any other way...!

Bethbe · 23/10/2006 14:03

NJ & FatBetty:

Good advice about interfering with the possibility of other forms of pain releif! Will bear that in mind, - although if the very early stages of labour go on for a long time (days) I don't expect it will matter!?

I'm still shocked at the reaction on the other thread though. Didn't realise there were such strong oppinions about alcohol in pregnancy in general.

NatalieJane · 23/10/2006 14:14

I haven't read the other thread yet, but I think it is one of those things that some people have very strong views on, while others think there are far worse things for a woman to do while pregnant!

Also don't take it for granted that as a first timer your labour will last for days on end, mine was only 12 hours from the very first niggle to he was born.

saralou100 · 23/10/2006 14:40

hi everyone... no more babies yet then?

interesting subjects being discussed today i must say.. were really getting personal aren't we!!

bethbe, i really wouldn't take for granted that you'll be in early labour for a long time.. ds took 5 hrs from start to finish, i had no early labour, just literally woke up went to the loo and discovered a show and started having contractions straight away 3-4 mins apart.. gonna go read this thread you started, sounds like you've caused a stir!

nj, we use prostaglandins (the stuff in sperm) at work to induce labour both orally and vaginally, but the oral dose is much higher than the other route.. so i think to get your theory to work you'd need 3 bj's for every nookie!

Sara, yes I was induced with the prostaglandin gel, that wasn't orally, I suppose Catty's 'a man invented that bit of information' (!!) speaks volumes!! LOL

NatalieJane · 23/10/2006 14:51

Mygirl, I didn't have a show of any sort last time, well not unless it happened after the pethadine, don't remember anything after that! Only one of the reasons I'm not going anywhere near it this time!

Bethbe · 23/10/2006 14:59

MyGirl,

I think the thread is settling down now, but it started with me being accused of being a troll and a kid on half-term etc. It was upsetting, coz although I probably could have worded things better, it was a genuine question!

It then followed with a discussion of 'misuse' etc and being fixated with alcohol, but finally some sensible info came through!

People are so quick to judge....

Sorry, can't contribute to the 'show' debate at the moment.

Delia · 23/10/2006 15:07

hey all,

NJ - i've been having the same thing with the creamy liquid for a week or so now, it generally happens just after i've been for a wee, i wipe go to stand up and then sit back down again quick!

Beth - people can be very quick to jump on MN sometimes especially if they are speed reading, they just jump to conclusions, but it can be worth the bashing if you get some good advice. I spotted the tonight with Trevor McD thing earlier today to and am planning on watching, might have to set up a tape though if bump dosent wake up, midwife has me on instructions to call labour ward if bump dosent do much between now and 6 (is v quiet today, had some spotting last night and she found nitrate in sample. She thinks i could have got an infection.)

Thank you for all the congrats bit knackered this morning but we're doing fine.

My waters went friday evening in the bath - think it was just the hind waters and just kept dribbling like bath water does when you stand up. But they were pink. Then mid contraction saturday there was a pop and felt them go a bit, (was still at home at this point) that was what made me decide to head for hospital and then there was another gush about 10 mins later. My show as just like your describing, but the first time it just like a big lump of jelly.

Oohh sounds like there are going to be more babies soon.
