hi there! the first message from a nervous and fragile first timer! i am due 20/04/07 and really concerned about the care that is being offered through my doc and the hospital. i have just been told that in glasgow - we only get one scan sometime in the 12- 16th weeks. that is it - no other scan. i thought anomolies could only be picked up at the 18 - 20th week??

is there anyone out there who can reassure on this??

Hi Weeonion, Congratulations! I am from Glasgow too, my ds is 5 months (due date was 2/4/06, so quite similar to you, was born 22/3/06!). My sister has had 3 children and was really annoyed about the one scan thing. she wrote letters etc because it seemed so unfair that other areas were getting 2 scans and they obviously felt this was necessary.
I had my first scan at 13.5 weeks, which was quite late so ds was quite well developed which was good, but I have to say I paid for a second scan privately to give me some peace of mind. It was quite expensive £195 through babyscan in citycentre, although as it was 3D we saw all his fingers and toes! We didn't want to know the sex, so it can be a bit tricky and I think if I was doing it again I would go through one of the private hospitals. Hope this helps X

great katyjo - thanks for the reply! it is all so new to me - quite literally!! We have been talking about getting a second scan privately but werent sure if the babyscan centre would pick up on any problems.

does anyone know where the private hospitals are in glasgow - i have only moved here a couple of months from northern ireland....

I have had dd and ds in Glasgow - and I queried the one scan policy but tbh if there is any indication of a need to they willl scan more. I had about 5 scans with ds as I had had pre-elampsia with dd.
Talk to your midwife about this she may know where you can go to get private scans- good luck

Hi Weeonion, I'm also living in Glasgow at the mo and was also concerned about the 1 scan thing. I can't remember any specific hospitals but if you search in Google for 4d scanning clinics, loads come up in Scotland. Apparently there's a hospital / clinic at Livingston that's slightly more reasonable than some of the others in Glasgow.

Good luck!

katyjo · 11/09/2006 13:17

There is Ross Hall and The Nuffield, not sure which ones do scans. Your Midwife should be able to give you some information or give the hospitals a phone. Babyscan did have a qualified Radiologist doing the scan and she checked all the organs, at least I think she did!? They have a website, and you can just have a 2d scan if you want, have a look at the website its quite cool. It isn't a hospital and I felt it was a bit gimicky, not very clinical, so maybe the hospitals would be better.

I had my nuchal fold done here. nuffield Which hospital are you attending?

geordiemacminx · 11/09/2006 13:19

Hey weeonion, I too moved to Glasgow, although it was a couple of years ago. I'm due the week after you, and am also concerned about the lack of scans. My local hospital is Wishaw, and to be honest they have been great with me and have booked me in for an early scan on Thursday, all I had to do was fone them. Re private scans the 4d baby scanning place is in Glasgow, Ingram street which is only a couple of minutes walk from George Square. Also www.healthcarenow.co.uk
they are in Edinburgh but offer private scanning from 7 weeks - an early scan is only £65. Whereabouts in Glasgow are you if you dont mmind me asking..just I'm pretty alone up here and we are due around the same time so it would be nice to keep in touch. Have you added your stats to the due in April thread in the ante-natal club>?

seb1 · 11/09/2006 13:21

At the Nuffield my scan was done by the Head of Fetal medicine for the QM Glasgow

LynnC · 11/09/2006 13:21

hi weeonion. I think they can pick up most anomolies as eary as 12 weeks and further checks at your gp blood checks, heart rate, measurements etc will indicate if you need any further scans. I ended up with three as dd always measured 3 weeks behind dates but she made up for it in last few weeks. Try not to worry and good luck.

weeonion · 11/09/2006 13:42

wow - i go away from the pc for a few mins and theres all these replies!

to answer you geordiemacminx - i live in dennistoun and yep - i have added my stats to the april thread.

i dont know which hospital i will be attending - my doc said he hasnt decided which one he will send the referral letter to. i feel i am sitting in limbo land - not knowing anything. i did ring to speak to him today but was told that i need to make an appt for that (first being friday!)
we havent told anyone as yet - i wanted to wait until my scan was done before goinf=g public but having gone up 5 bra cup sizes - folks may guess!

good to hear from all of you though!

hi - you should be able to say which hospital you would rather go to. I certainly got option from my doc. So you tell him which one suits you best.

katyjo · 11/09/2006 13:59

Wow! 5 bra cup sizes, your other half must be thrilled! You said your doctor hadn't decided which hospital, they should really give YOU the choice, would you not be closest to the princess royal, I'm not really sure I went to QM, PR is supposed to be really nice. I found the pregnancy bible was a great book, it answered all my questions and made feel more comfortable. I think you could probably get it from the library or you can borrow mine if you want. Don't panic, it is such a confusing time, but everything will be fine and you learn so much in such a short time, but everyone is the same. Good luck, keep us posted. X

Hi everyone

I?d love to hear from or meet up with any other mums-to-be in Glasgow. I live in Linthouse, Glasgow, and a wee bit depressed and isolated sums up how I'm feeling at the moment. Unbelievably, I don't even know my due date as I had no menstrual period for a year prior to becoming pregnant and I'm still waiting for the hospital (Royal Alexandra in Paisley) to send me the invite for my first scan. So, until I get the scan, I'm left looking at my expanding belly and guessing how far along I am - probably around 12, could be even 14 weeks. Unbelievable. I had a midwife's appointment at my surgery 2 weeks ago, she felt my belly and said "Well, I can't feel the baby so you are less than 20 weeks!!" and then told me to come back after my first scan.

I lived and worked in Japan for 8 years and the ante-natal care out there is really good. My friends there are amazed that I haven't had a scan yet - it's one of the first things they do on confirming a pregnancy. Just before I came to Glasgow, I worked in Bangladesh for two years....I am starting to wonder whether I'd have been better off there, LOL. Sorry for the long post and for moaning so much. I know I'll feel better once I've had my dates confirmed, I just feel in total limbo now.

I've just realised this thread is a year and a half old! Ah well...
