I can't stop sniggering at the idea of a knitted boob!

When I did my masters degree a couple of years' ago I did a section

ZingWatermelon · 24/04/2014 18:29

Blue

I suggested Floradix with Iron.
I don't think GP will prescribe it - health food shops, pharmacists, bigger supermarkets stock them

Wow lots of pants talk still-I've just gone next size up big black m&s pants for now!

blue and home I'm the same about breast feeding would love to but if it doesn't work out so be it, baby will be fine!

Right time to eat to prepare for NCT will let you all know...

Plateofcrumbs · 24/04/2014 18:34

..oops hit reply button on phone!

...in my masters i did a section on social theory and feminism and I wrote a couple of papers on breastfeeding. Really interesting subject in relation to feminist thought. I had this whole thing about the 'natal panopticon' ( very Foucault inspired, for the social theory nerds!) - but basically was about the impact of other people's judgey-pants on feeding choices. Wish I'd had the chance to do a proper study on it.

ItsAlwaysBetterOnHoliday · 24/04/2014 19:08

Is it bad that I hadn't actually heard of maternity pants before this thread? I've just gone up a size in comfy cheap cotton M+S pants for now.

plate that sounds interesting. I've noticed people seem v edgy on the breast/bottle topic in conversation. I'm hoping to breast feed but if it doesn't work or makes baby or I miserable I'm going to move to bottle. Figure we can only try and life is too short!

dramajustfollowsme · 24/04/2014 19:34

Our NHS run class last time had a knitted boob and knitted birth canal that the mw pushed a baby through to show how we would stretch for the baby...Blush
It was erm interesting. Grin

BlueC2 · 24/04/2014 20:04

Who thinks up the knitting patterns for these things?! drama I think the knitted birth canal trumps the boob!

Thanks zing will see how I get on with the tablets and look into the Floradix if I'm struggling.

MrsA2 · 24/04/2014 20:20

We had NCT session last night. We did again have a hippy section where we had to pick a birthing position and stay there for a 90 second contraction while the teacher muttered what I guess must be some hypnobirthing mantra, I had to bite my lip to stop the giggles.

There is certainly lots of group work in ours - splitting into smaller groups to discuss feelings etc. That's quite hard going after a tough day at work. And my husband tends to look mightly unimpressed throughout. Thankfully the other couples are very normal and all the husbands clearly are as bemused as mine.

That said it has been useful, I've learnt stuff and my husband definitely has - apparently until last night he thought labour always only lasted four hours max...!

I've been pleasantly surprised by how much our teacher has emphasised not to be a hero and to trust your instincts and have whatever pain relief you need. I'm hoping not to have an epidural but was expecting the natural birth option to be the only one the NCT accepted.

I'm doing the shorter Essentials course which I'm quite glad about, the Signature here is something like 8 x 3 hour sessions. Don't think I could take that.

MrsA2 · 24/04/2014 20:21

Drama, the knitted birth canal sounds quite incredible, just wow!

ismarah · 24/04/2014 21:23

Giggling at the idea of a natal panopticon - especially as breastfeeding in public seems to go down quite randomly with the public. Stupid public.

Re iron tabs - in the last convo about them I mentioned that they don't necessarily always stopper you up - with me it just turns the output weird and black.

Really hoping our NCT group will be full of cackling cynics, like DH and I both are. We're skeptical and sarcastic and having an ELCS. DH has never seen me in a 'play along well with others' group type setting other than around our friends, not strangers. Eek.

In agony today, not quite sure why. SPD probably but finding it harder than before to do anything involving standing or sitting or walking. I suspect lying down might be OK.

mixi82 · 24/04/2014 21:45

thanks for new thread zing!

Well, had my development/growth scan today following 2 PV bleeds over the course of pregnancy. Pleased to say everything is going well and now been taken off consultant care :) Can't believe how clear some of the images were, and when the sonographer started scanning we saw baby yawn haha!! I've got a pic of bay facing camera and smiling, well at least it looks like a smile to me! What does everyone think?

Got the 3rd trimester aches though, baby loves being on the right side which gives me rib/back aches....not much I can do really but I DP gives a rub when needed, although now he's away on detachment for a month :(

mw was cross id gone to work& referred me by phone to fetal assessment unit. was there 2&half hrs and left none the wiser. mw there hooked me up to monitors/pulse/blood pressure for half hr. then mw made me go give a sample - it was clear. then a gynae dude in scrubs did a super duper long ultrasound (spent too long with heart looking/listening&measuring - no idea why). then he decided I needed an internal examination with a rough shoved speculum & took a swab. got dressed & he ultrasounded belly again. then paged some consultant or something who repeated super long belly scan & then an internal ultrasound because bladder wasn't full. was supposed to go back in june to check placenta had moved up which it has but they want me back in 2wks. no idea why :s they know im to see community mw on mon also. kept saying placenta was at the back (is it supposed to be?)
no cause of bleeding found & it stopped this morning.
sorry for long winded post

Plateofcrumbs · 24/04/2014 22:34

That sounds really stressful mummytobe - it's horrible when they don't properly explain what's happening.

NCT class was fine - not too mossy (although I did panic when we entered the room to find a circle of chairs surrounding a patchwork quilt and a load of candles!). Everyone was reassuringly as clueless as me. People seem nice enough - didn't have an any immediate 'hey you can be my friend for life!' moments but hoping we can bond as the weeks progress - we've all got something pretty major in common after all! Poor DH is not a 'bloke's bloke' though - he'd probably have been happier chatting to the women.

ismarah · 24/04/2014 23:12

Plate Neither is my DH. We should set them up with a play date that does not involve talking about feelz. Or babies, for that matter.

Kidding. Just practicing pretending to be a normal mummy. Stealth weirdo by day, ninja mummy by night. But never mossy. #tiara

icklekid · 25/04/2014 03:39

Was too tired last night to post about nct..sorry! No candles or patchwork at ours just 1 very normal, friendly lady who even joked that she was sorry to disappoint but there would be no whale noises!

No talking about feelings! Did an ice breaker that involved talking to everyone about non baby related things which was nice- made into a competition so dh, who normally doesn't talk to strangers suddenly was and won! Then we talked in groups about what we hoped to learn/wanted to know from the sessions which will set the agenda for each week. She added some ideas but all very relaxed and helpful.

Talked a bit about food/drink- so reassuring to hear her say will get you the official list at the moment but be realistic- glass of wine won't hurt, if you get salmonella you are just unlucky whatever precautions you take etc. Also was clearly very open to pain relief options, talked a lot about c section, home births. Breast feeding was obviously presumed but she definitely isn't going to push it- more a it's worth it if your willing to try which is same as my mw.

We then did a quiz which got us talking and showing ignorance- everything from weight/length baby, illnesses and what to look out for, babys senses at birth etc learnt a fair bit. She then showed photos of new born from 3-15min old learning to stick out its tongue, taught by Dad! My dh decided he will def be doing that- oh and apparently new borns like sky sports news don't need to tell dh that!

So very little feelings talk, some good practical advice, nice people- as plate said no one I immediately thought friends for life but no one couldn't cope with!

mummy I would have been so frustrated by not knowing what was going on. Glad the bleeding stopped hope your able to rest today.

mixi very cute smiley scan photo!

icklekid · 25/04/2014 03:47

Oh and despite ridiculously long post (sorry) Blush forgot my favourite bit- just enjoy the first 6 weeks, don't try and get into a routine. Lots of newborn cuddles, amongst the chaos of lack of sleep etc enjoy the little moments learning about your baby. Obviously only really possible with 1st but I think that's where I am right now- accept it will be hard but find good times in that and enjoy them!

icklekid · 25/04/2014 03:54

Sorry last post- promise! 2 of the couples booked onyo our course due july/August have ALREADY had their babies!!! How scary- 1 was born at 5lb!!! Bith girls and doing well but can't even imagine!

jaykay987 · 25/04/2014 05:04

wow! New thread is nice and busy!

You're all scaring me with your nct stories! DH will run a mile!

FX nothing too hippy happens at the first class - otherwise I'll never get him to attend the other classes!

The lump in my belly that I think is 'bum' has moved about 5inches to the left. Feels painful - that side of my belly is now more stretched!

Anyone started a work countdown yet? I'm down to three days a week next week. eek! only 5weeks to go!

Plateofcrumbs · 25/04/2014 08:47

Unfortunately when I think about work jaykay it's mostly panic about how I'm going to fit it all in - got four members of staff to recruit before I leave, including my maternity cover, and so much else - ended up doing two hours work after NCT last night and another hour first thing this morning. Shattered! Don't know how I'll do this job AND have a child.

AuntieMaggie · 25/04/2014 08:55

Think I've had another growth spurt as sides and bump ache... also very tired

Yes I'm counting down to finishing work... 7 weeks left... about 28 days once I've taken off bank hols and appts... eek! I've started a new job this week so thats a bit weird!

BlueC2 · 25/04/2014 09:13

mummy that sounds like a rotten day-hope you feel better soon

ickle glad you had a useful time at your Nct

plate juggling work when pregnant or with a little one is hard work but at least when child here you don't have quite the same looming deadline or lack of energy!

I've managed to get a telephone consultation with doc this morning and DH gonna get my prescription but doc can only prescribe the tablets on NHS and not Spatone or floradix so will have to see how the constipation goes-given it was bad this morning without the iron tabs I'm not too hopeful!

Happy Friday all!

ismarah · 25/04/2014 09:34

Also, plate once you've recruited those staff and your mat cover they will do their jobs and that massive worry will be gone. So you'll probably be fine.

Nice that there are normal NCT classes out there, I shall hope.

Suspect I may have round ligament pain now as well as symphysis pubis dysfunction. Bump keeps sort of dropping and it's like there's nothing holding it in place anymore. I'm doing all the things google tells you to do but I can barely move or stand up straight. Thankfully, I will be seeing a consultant in an hour so will hear what they say.

Even lying in bed is uncomfortable if I'm on my side because then bump pulls sideways, pillow or no pillow. DH has permanent worried Bambi eyes going on.

BlueC2 · 25/04/2014 10:16

ismarah as much as I'm moaning about iron levels and having horrid cough/cold it's nothing in comparison with those of you suffering SPD and worse! Really hope the consultant can help! Pregnancy not as glamorous as some make out!

jaykay987 · 25/04/2014 10:25

plate that doesn't sound fun. I had a similar panic about 2months ago (everyone in my work typically works to 3months notice so lead times are much longer). But I came to terms with who would/wouldn't be in place before I head off. I decided I wouldn't sacrifice my sanity and so far the world is still turning! I never knew I could push back so much at work - but I think it's good practice for when I go back. Communicating (and sticking to) my boundaries is something I'll need to get good at!
FX a plan comes together soon.

AuntieMaggie · 25/04/2014 10:31

mummy hope things are better today. your mw should be able to tell you on mon what they were doing and why if you can wait that long but if you have any more problems please call them straight away.

blue fx no constipation for you

plate really feel for you with the work stuff esp as I'm about as useful as a choc teapot atm!

ismarah really hope you can get some help/advice for the pain... it really sucks as there isn't much that will help relieve it :(
