newmum21 · 29/08/2006 10:47

thanks all for the advice.

Just wanted to know what happens now, i have had my 12 week scan, i've been told the midwife will visit me at home, what all does this involve? when will my next scan be? i feel a bit stupid with all this, so new and im abit scared about everything to be honest, help!!!!

kittywits · 29/08/2006 11:15

newmum, the midwife will come to YOU? WOW!!!! You live in agreat place!!!!!
Where I am this is generally what happens in an uncomplicated preg.
Dating scan 12 ish weeks
16 weeks tripple test if you want it
20 weeks scan to check all is well with baby
26 weeks glucose test for diabetes
then check ups about once a month until due

I've just got a phone call fro the ultasound people saying they can fit me in for a dating scan this fri. i said I'd take it but am a bit disapponyed because I'll be 10+6 then.
I would have prefered it a week later as the detail would have been better.
Scans at our local hospital are like gold dust though so I don't dare turn it down.

if it's alive at 11 weeks weeks there's a pretty good chance it will be ok isn't there? Worry, worry, worry

novadandypowder · 29/08/2006 11:16

wow, what a crazy busy weekend on here!

newmum - I went private so I'm not sure of the deal with NHS, but I had a midwife appt every 4 weeks where they did BP, wee check, bump measurement. I then had a 20wk scan, but I know that varies depending on what area you're in. I was also very lucky and had a 36wk scan . At some point the midwife checks get more regular until you're going every week, but I think thats in the last trimester.

DollyP - you and me are the same, my MS is reaching new highs. I can't do anything, and my energy is at an all time low due to not eating/keeping much down. Just wish I could have one day of feeling alright

I would have liked a big family, but I never want to go through this again.

nova 9+6

novadandypowder · 29/08/2006 11:19

kitty - you got there first, haha!

They can't due the nuchol fold test that early can they? Will you go back for that, or do they not do it where you are?

oh, and links to other MN pages. Open MN on another web page, so you have two MN's open. On one click into the page you want to do a link to. Cut the url from the address bit at the top (sorry if I get too technical - lol), and paste it into the message box on the other MN page you have open.

Clear as mud? Good

cazboldy · 29/08/2006 11:24

I have had 3 home births so far and will be hoping for another one. The midwife comes to you approx every other appointment and it is all much less clinical and informal. I am going to see the mw for the 1st time on 5th sept and should hopefully have a dating scan soon after that.

eidsvold · 29/08/2006 11:36

fat fox - what is a hosepipe people are only allowed to water their gardens with buckets here - we have a huge garden and no thoughts of watering with buckets - pass out before I finished!! We did have some rain yesterday but it seems to have gone and not enough for our dams to get any run off.

kittywits · 29/08/2006 11:40

Thanks Nova, yeah that makes sense. No I'm not going for a nuchal even though I'm an old bint. I'll do the tripple and if anything shows up I'll take it from there. Did have it done with baby no 4 as I went to a different hospital to ring the changes. This time it would involve a trip up to London and I can't be arsed

Caz I had my last at home and never got any home vists actually I did at the end as I said I was too fat to move and wouldn't go in anymore! I can be quite arsey a times , had you guessed?!!

eidsvold · 29/08/2006 11:46

oh did have some news. My dd1 who has down syndrome was also born with a congenital heart defect - had it repaired via 2 open heart sugeries at 8 weeks old and today she had her annual appt. Cardiologist was very impressed and says it is almost like a 'perfect' heart!!

Last year we learnt that my dh had a cardiac condition also - strangely dd1's is absolutely nothing to do with his - but jsut to do with the fact she has down syndrome. So I asked the cardiologist what chance of dd2 and this baby. Turns out we have a 1 in 50 chance of dd2 or this baby having a heart condition. One of dh's conditions ( he has two) is apparently very very common... a lot of people have it and especially in the middle aged generation - may never know they have it unless something else is discovered ( as in dh's case)

So something for the sonographer to check at 20 week scan.

Gosh my mushy pregnant brain can hardly process all the chatting mums! last pregnancy I was on a midwife lead programme that meant visits at home like you newmum. I had one midwife looking after me which was blissfull because I really liked her. Who needs to go private with that service! This time I've moved to a different area so I'll have to drag myself to the health centre. how dull!
I had been looking about 4 months pregnant ever since last birth, I FINALLY shifted a bit of weight when bingo i got pregnant again. bah humbug. I'm so easily seduced and knocked up!yesterday i sadly put away the little trousers i had just got back into because my belly is humungous again. sigh.
At the moment I am wishing i was the man. This baby better be cute! I think its a girl but if I am wrong I don't mind. I never have a clue what other people are having. I'm purely selfish in my witch skills!

eidsvold · 29/08/2006 12:12

here it is very hard to have a home birth - unless it is too late - very few midwife led units and so you have to put your name down for a ballot and be very very low risk. They do something called shared care - had last time with Dd2 - gp for most appts - hospital for about 5 appts - booking in - around the 20 week mark, 26 weeks for GTT if you need it, somewhere at 32 and then closer to term. Great if the hospital is a bit of a drive like ours is.

Am going for shared care again - most appts at the Gp down the road ( she is brilliant) and then a few consultant visits.

Due to third c-section - no midwife led unit for me - not even contemplate letting me do that.

oooh I'm getting very envious of all these home births, homes visits etc.

Home births are discouraged where I live and I'm not sure I have the energy or confidence to persue one, though I'd like one.

In terms of ante-natel appointments I just had:

10 week booking
12 week nuchal scan
will have 21 week scan

I thought they'd see me more as I had MC last year, but no such luck.

pennygaff · 29/08/2006 13:00

Hi All Mnetters
Hope Bank Hols were bearable, I made chutney very WI of me I know.
Newmum21- I have terrible trouble getting off to sleep on a night, I usually have my m/s then and its coupled with crazy dreams, sweats and restlessness. Lastnight was a bad one cos I had a headache too, so your not the only one but its weird is'nt?

Green Tomatoe Chutney Anyone? Delias finest (book says)

pennygaff · 29/08/2006 13:03

Forgot to mention its my first too! and M/S is so badddddd, like the worst case of SeaFood posioning which goes on the weeks.
People keep saying it cos its a girl, but I don't really go for that.

kittywits · 29/08/2006 14:09

I was keep awake during the small hours having to fight the urge to barf. Never had had before with previous pregs. I find stuffing my face is the only way to keep it at bay.

Booboobedoo · 29/08/2006 14:23

Afternoon ladies.

Sorry to hear about all the barfing.

Nova and dolly: if it makes you feel any better, I've been laid up in bed with MS since week 6, but am now 13+2 and much better. It will end!

Fatfox: told everyone on Sunday (with photos to hand like you) and everyone was lovely except my Grandma - who's a weird woman anyway.

Called a couple of (childless male) friends today to tell them - think they thought I'd been avoiding them all summer. They were very sweet about it, and forgave me for not coming out since June.

So this is the second trimester - thank f**k for that.

newmum21 · 29/08/2006 14:39

pennygaff, how far along are you now? im 13 weeks and really feeling so much better i get the odd spell of ms but nothing as bad as what it was. it was like magic really woke up one morning and it was gone!!! i've been told im probably having a girl too coz the ms was so bad but i dont believe that either, just wish i could get some sleep at night.

just been out looking for some maternity wear, no luck everything is far to big for me, its so frustrating and my clothes just keep getting tighter everyday aaaahhhhh

TheBlonde · 29/08/2006 14:43

Hi all, it's hard keeping up with this thread, lots going on, anyway...

newmum21 - with my first preg the midwife visited me at home for the first appt, imo it's just so they can have a nose and check you don't live in a hovel

This time I have to go to them. 1st appt is in a week's time, the day after my nuchal scan

cazboldy · 29/08/2006 14:53

you arsey kittywits! never
didn't i read on another thread that you have had a couple of c sections? you did well to have a home birth after that!

newmum21 · 29/08/2006 14:57

theblonde, i was told by someone thats all they come round to do, have a look at where and how you live. cant wait to get that part over and done with!!!

kittywits · 29/08/2006 15:38

It's true Caz. 2 sections, 2 vag births in hospital, 1 home birth. I got that one 'cos I can be arsey , Actually I chose it because the hospital were mucking me about regarding a water birth and I just thought " stuff this, I'm having her at home" my doula put me on to the organisation "AIMS" which is all about women's legal rights regarding pregnancy care and child birth and alerts them to all the lies told by the NHS to save it money and work.
Knowing your rights makes all the difference. For instance I had been warned that when I phoned up in labour they might well ask me to go in saying they were busy and under staffed
( because it would be easier for them). I was told that it was their legal duty to send midwives out to me whatever. When I finally did go into labour of course that very thing happened but despite being in the middle of labour was able to say " No I am staying here"
They came and all was well. Sorted

Rosylily · 29/08/2006 16:04

I would absolutely love some pickle! Might have to go buy some now. Certainly not going to make any, can hardly make the dinner at the moment so well done you Pennygaff!

I just ordered some maternity stuff from vertbaudet. I have only got kids stuff before and the sizes were slightly small I think cuz its french. I ordered myself a bigger size so you might get something there newmum. You can do it online and they are always doing offers.

My ms is starting to go, not totally yet. The first three months its to do with certain neccessary hormones but I do know a couple of people who vomit all through the pregnancy when its a girl. That doesn't happen to me THANK GOODNESS I couldn't bear it.

I am up every night eating stuff!

cazboldy · 29/08/2006 17:22

We have a lot of shortages here too. they actually shut down our maternity dept a few times recently and sent mums in labour to another hospital!I said to my mw last time that I was going nowhere in labour as number 3 came very fast( 40 mins from 1st contraction to arrival) and she said "well it's not up to you it's up to us!" and said that the best I would get was an ambulance and then I would have to go in even if everything was fine afterwards as that was the protocol! Luckily there was no problem when I was actually in labour. Hopefully it will be ok this time too!

emmalinc · 29/08/2006 18:40

Had my scan today and there is only one in there and still on for the due date we were given of 4 March. Such an amazing feeling seeing it there. Makes it actually real!

Piffle, yes it is Lincoln but as in my partners name and not the place!

kittywits · 29/08/2006 18:51

Caz Your midwife was lying to you. That's so shocking
They can advise you as to what they bwant you to do but if you chose to give birth at home THEY HAVE TO SUPPORT YOU AND PROVIDE MAEIDICAL ASSISTANCE other wise it's criminal negligence and they would be in BIG BIG TROUBLE

fatfox · 29/08/2006 19:25

Emmalinc

Congrats on your scan

I had mine done last Monday and have fallen deeply in love with that little beanie in the picture

Sorry, hormones clearly getting the better of me...
