Kirsti - I'm a big fan of reusables. Mainly because they save money and are obviously so much better for the environment. We used bumgenius the first time round. I have just bought a few more to update my stash from the nappy lady (her videos are so helpful for newbies) and so this time round I've spent £100 on nappies and that'll be it now for the whole of the babies nappy life! Bargain! I bought bumgenius freetime, as they don't even need stuffing, so simple, similar in use to a disposable. We sometimes use dispoasble at night if there are sleeping issues, but I cloth when out - it really is no hassle to bring back a few dirty nappies in a waterproof bag. It creates no extra washing, and is simple when it becomes part of the routine. My nursery was happy to use them too. I even packed a load when we went abroad for one week and had a washing machine in our villa! They dried super quick in the spanish sun!! Oh and we clothed from 8 weeks onwards, so I was used to having a baby! And also so he chunked out a little. You do have to change more frequently but like I said, it becomes second nature and is no hassle. No nappy rash at all either...

If anyone wants to PM me about this then I'm happy to chat/offer advice! I'm sadly excited about the cloth nappies arriving in the amazing colours I ordered!

sazzlehopes · 29/04/2014 11:28

I agree with trouble too - bamboo booster are good for night, and I also bought some off ebay the first time round - just this time thought I'd take advantage of real nappy week and the 20% off. They sell on really well too, so once you're not going to use yours again you can sell on and make more savings! Hooray all round!

I'm 18+3 and hoping to feel baby move soon! I can't wait for that feeling!

ohthegoats · 29/04/2014 12:20

A Doppler scan for something - possibly because of my blood clotting issues? Not sure, didn't ask at the time, assumed it was just another good thing.

ohthegoats · 29/04/2014 12:30

18+3 I think (I keep losing track) today, and no movements yet. I don't really know what I'm feeling for to be honest.

mum2kiss · 29/04/2014 12:56

Glad you were able to get an earlier appointment fedup, and that all is well!

I havent been losing sleep with worry but every time I think about the appointment I start having doubts!

I've felt movement today though so hopefully everything is fine in there! Also heard that my midwife has now left so hopefully the new one will be a bit more thorough!

TroubleAndFyfe · 29/04/2014 14:44

Good news that your midwife's left mum2kiss! Hope you get a better one now.
I just had my 16 week appointment which was quite a surprise - it was supposed to be last week but midwife was I'll so was cancelled, I called today to rebook and she happened to be doing a visit around the corner so popped in! It took ages to find the heartbeat, I started to think she wasn't going to be able to find it which would have been really disappointing but she got there in the end with lots of guidance from me telling her where the baby was kicking at time (it just kept wiggling around.)She had to sort of trap it in a corner in the end! Grin perfect strong heartbeat 148 bpm. Scan is 3 weeks today! Smile

LondonJen · 29/04/2014 15:24

Good news Fedup and Trouble my 16wk appointment is tomorrow tho I will actually be 17 weeks.

I think I have been a naive FOOL about these maternity clothes! Just because I had one maternity top that fits I really thought these new clothes would more or less be fine 'with growing room'. Ha! Stupid woman. The tshirts are baggy. The dresses are horrible. The tankini was too small. The only thing that fits I don't even like. I really thought I had done an excellent basic shop that would keep me going till we had a really hot summer!

ExcitedCJ · 29/04/2014 15:51

Hi LondonJen where did you buy your clothes? I didn't spend very much for last Pg & I have gotten lots back to wear this time. Try Mammalicious jeans & jeggings, ASOS. Gap is good for chinos. Isabella Oliver is fantastic but a little pricy. I bought 2 tops from Isabella Oliver last time & they are still great today & my SIL also wore them. Accessorised with lots of cardigans, scarves & necklaces & you can get away with not too much.
15% Discount for Isabella Oliver with code - CONGRATS.

mum2kiss · 29/04/2014 16:33

So I remember an old wives tale from my last pregnancy that if babys hb is above 140bpm you are having a girl...is this true for anybody so far who knows what they are having? It was true for us last time lol!

TroubleAndFyfe · 29/04/2014 16:44

oooh - a girl sign! Smile

PunkyBubba · 29/04/2014 16:50

I had my 16 week midwife appt last Friday. She couldn't find the heartbeat though she tried for ages, but she could hear movements so I wasn't too concerned... But you still have that niggling doubt. Anyway she offered to send me off a scan (not going to refuse that eh!) so I had one this morning and all looking fine.

So anyway, for those worried about the 16 week appointments, it is notoriously hard to pin the heartbeats down at such an early stage apparently, as there is still so much space for baby to hide. We will always worry, but chances are all will be fine even if they can't hear it yet.

Have started feeling the odd movements too which is lovely, makes it all much more real.

tak1ngchances · 29/04/2014 17:00

Just saw my consultant (16 + 5) and heard the heartbeat Smile. I feel so happy hearing it. Don't think I would get the home doppler though, I'd become obsessive I reckon.

He made sympathetic noises about the fact I am still throwing up, feel exhausted and have nosebleeds every day. Sent me for blood work (thyroid and FBC) but said it's probably just down to "being pregnant".

Overall a reassuring visit, best part was hearing DD's heartbeat for sure!

tak1ngchances · 29/04/2014 17:01

PS I am not feeling any movement yet and he said that is not a cause for concern. Just in case anyone else is movement-free at 16/17 weeks-ish and worried. (I was freaking out)

Kirstipops · 29/04/2014 17:02

I've heard the old wives tale that if the heart beat sounds like a gallop it's a girl, if it's like a train then it's a boy! Wee Dug's heart beat was most definitely a train....at 155 bpm. Ibalso tried the bicarb of soda pee test and had a somewhat unconvincing fizz! I reckon it doesn't want to be labelled at this time haha!

TroubleAndFyfe · 29/04/2014 17:06

Lovely, yay for lots of good news and hearing heart beats today. Tak1ngchances do you know how many beats per minute your DD had? just wondering if she fits the theory!
I forgot to mention in my joy that I have effin' tinitus in my left ear and have done since Sunday. It's really quite annoying. Had a quick google and its very common in pregnancy and there's nothing you can do about it.

Oklahoma · 29/04/2014 17:27

It's not really as glamorous as the movies portray it this pregnancy malarkey is it? You'd think our bodies would make it a better experience given it is what we are supposedly programmed to do!

LondonJen · 29/04/2014 18:04

Excited just from Asos. Tbh I would've bought things nearer to 20 weeks but they had an offer so I thought I'd just gor for it. Ah well. Maybe tshirts will be fine in a few weeks. Was just a bit gutted and grumpy after trying it all on! I will def check out Isabella Oliver with the disc code. Am lucky I don't need a work wardrobe but normal things are getting tight and I don't want to buy a size up for a few weeks you know?

Lovely that you got to hear heartbeat tak1ng

Oklahoma whatever do you mean ? Grin

Bumpforme2014 · 29/04/2014 18:27

Evening all, I emailed my consultant at hospital today about my bowel condition flaring up and she wants to see me urgently tomorrow as may need steroids? Has anyone ever been on steroids while pregnant, it's obviously safe but I worry about side affects! Really need something as it's getting to the point where I am avoiding big meals in fear of pain which is not good for bubba. Gosh the second trimester is just as stressful as the first lol

ohthegoats · 29/04/2014 18:33

'Size up' clothes just look bad I find. I might have big tits and arse, but I have a really small frame, size up clothes hang off my shoulders and look ridiculous. I bought one t-shirt thing for holiday in the size up, took it with me, didn't wear it, and took it back to the shop when I got home!

I have only got two pairs of maternity trousers that I bought in the JoJoMamanWotsit sale, I keep trying them on, but they are going to fall down in a really annoying way I think - at least until I have a massive bump. I haven't worn them out of the house yet. Until I have no choice at all, it's all going to have to be leggings and dresses.

Heartbeat sounds are all good! I'm glad other midwives had to chase hiding babies around. I sort of felt sorry for mine (baby I mean), the way she hassled it. I'd heard the heartbeat for a few seconds the first time she put the Doppler on my belly, that was enough.

gunwalloe · 29/04/2014 18:42

mum2kiss we are expecting a girl and her heart rate is always around 150 bpm

magichandles · 29/04/2014 18:44

Bump - I've got ulcerative colitis and have been on steroids for all 3 pregnancies so far. The only real problems I have had with them I think are more likely due to the fact I've been on them for several years now, albeit at a low dose. I've had GD in both previous pregnancies which the diabetic consultant said could at least in part be due to the steroids, but I also have a strong family history of diabetes - so who knows!

It's interesting that you are flaring as your body naturally produces steroids when you are pregnant so I've been able to lower mine during pregnancy (I don't know what you have, but my gastroenterologist warned me in my first pregnancy to expect a flare up around 6 weeks after birth as that is when the level of the naturally produced steroids drops).

magichandles · 29/04/2014 18:48

Beware with Isabella Oliver that you have to pay returns postage - I didn't notice and got stung when I thought I'd try something on the offchance and found the sizing really off (I'm a 14 pre-pregnancy but my boobs have grown so I ordered a 16-18 top to be safe which was too small so I had to return it and pay for the privilege. I'm also mightily offended that I must be a size 20 in their world).

fedupofrainydays · 29/04/2014 18:52

I don't want to know what I'm having so I'm ignoring those old wives tales as it was 150 bpm today!! If I could remember my sons that would help but am pretty sure it was about the same. In fact not sure I've heard of ones below 140.

I've got definite movements now - was in the car stuck in traffic and there was a lot going on in there!

Bumpforme2014 · 29/04/2014 19:11

Thanks magic, just sent you a private message!

Me23 · 29/04/2014 20:29

Sorry hb theory has been disproven! People ask me all the time. To be honest it is fairly rare for a baby's hb to be under 140 at 16 weeks. They usually vary every time you check them one week 155 a month later 135 etc...
I felt movements very early but I'm not feeling them now so I think my placenta may be anterior again as blocking movements.

Who is going to find out the gender at 20 weeks? Obv the main point of scan in to check for anomalies but all being well I hope to find out, have done with each pregnancy.
