Boys name dilemma - sorry to be boring

Having huge problems deciding on a boys name. So far the list is as follows:

Freddie (I like Frederick too but husband doesn't)
Magnus
Tom
George

Bit worried that Freddie has got a bit too chav (with Jade's baby & featuring in Eastenders)and that Magnus is a bit obscure.

My daughter's name is Jemima - which we decided on almost immediatly!

Any opinions most welcome

Tom's my fave from that list - wanted to call DS that but DH wouldn't!

Like george but would be worried about other people calling him georgie- my friend's baby gets that all the time and it drives her potty!

elliepippamummy · 17/08/2006 11:25

Love George but we do know lots of them there are 3 at toddler group 2 sets of friends have a George and d dest friend is a little girl called Georgia so does get very confusing!!
I wanted Freddie for a boy but have gone off it now same reasons as you said Tom a lovely name and is modern bu traditional a few others we like:-

Jack
Jake
Samuel (although have nephew called this)
Rhys
Nathan
Alex or Alexander
Good Luck!!

I am loving

Will

at the moment. I want a boy called Will

noodlekitkat · 18/08/2006 22:09

Ok my opinion.....

Magnus I like this or you could try Marcus if you want something slightly more conventional?

Tom Freddie I like these but think you should name the baby Thomas or Frederick or Frederico etc. seems a shame to only have a nick name for your legal name? (subjective opinion here!)

George I give this the thumbs down as I don't like the way it looks or sound (very subjective I know!!!) and there are tons of them about...

I'm sure you will pick a great name whatever you choose!! Good luck!

Tommy · 18/08/2006 22:14

I think Magnus goes better with Jemima as they are both slightly unsual but still "traditional" IYSWIM

There are alot of the other names about.

Yarrow · 18/08/2006 23:06

Magnus is a fantastic strong, ancient, poetic name.It is not that obscure esp.not Scotland or of course scandanavia. I know a couple of guys called Magnus (& none were known as Mags!)
Good luck

Havingatoughtime · 18/08/2006 23:18

magnus

Adorabelle · 18/08/2006 23:34

Magnus & Tom are both v.strong names, liking them
v.much.

If my 2yr dd had been a boy I was certain he was going to be Issaac, still Love the name for a little boy.

i love the name tristan.

mustrunmore · 19/08/2006 18:31

I love Magnus.

Plumbridge · 19/08/2006 18:34

I love Wil, William as a christened name but am so fearful of Bill, Billy, Wills, Willy and so am wondering whether it would be safest not to go for Wil in the first place!

Good taste, I have an oliver already! It's always the matching it with your surname isn't it?! Why are there so many more good girls names?! Although Jacob and Toby are close favourites, still looking for something original ??

NatalieJane · 19/08/2006 18:48

I am loving Tom and George (already have a Thomas, and a George is on his way!) Only problem we are having with George is getting a good middle name.

I don't think it is the end of the world to have a popular name, in fact most people I know with 'strange(r)' names wished they had something a little more common...

Will is also lovely, my first would have been William if it wasn't for Willy Wills etc.

janeite · 19/08/2006 18:50

Magnus is lovely - and bet there won't be many more of them. Tom and George really popular now; don't like Freddie, sorry.

Plumbridge · 19/08/2006 19:09

NatalieJane, You could always have that Wil after all but as a middle name for George?!

NatalieJane · 20/08/2006 10:13

I do like George William, but when you put it with our surname - Oliver - it sounds like an 18th century author or something!! LOL It is the strongest contender at the moment though!

suzi2 · 20/08/2006 13:37

I went to uni with 2 Magnus's. 1 was a bit odd. But the other was drop dead gorgeous, sweet and intelligent. Good name in my view.

Spidermama · 20/08/2006 13:41

LOVE Freddie. Ds's best friend is Freddie.

sleepfinder · 29/08/2006 15:59

We're also going for Tom (due Sept 06).

Its actually not just a nick name for Thomas. Its been an independent name since the 18th Century - so say I, the obsessive name dictionary reader...

George is also lovely and I really like Magnus too!

Astrophe · 29/08/2006 16:02

I would go for Alfred and call him Freddie. LOVE Freddie (or Alfie) but not so keen on Frederick myself. If we ever have another DS he will be Alfie I think (we have an Elijah/Eli now).

Good luck!

Astrophe · 29/08/2006 16:08

oh also like Toby (DH is Toby) and Angus
