lee and blessed try not worry re being sent home.
All hospitals have to have a defined point at which they can diagnose a woman as being in labour. It tends to be when her cervix is 3-4 cms dilated and she is having regular painful contractions, approx every 5 mins or so.
Sadly most hospitals don't have the midwives or space to keep everyone who comes in contracting until they reach that point so ladies are regularly sent home to await events.
There has to be a point at which active labour can be defined otherwise every lady that starts contracting no matter how infrequently would be admitted and could be there for a very long time.
If mum and baby are well and they are not diagnosed in active labour it is felt most women are better off at home during early labour. They are more likely to relax, mobilise, and progress naturally in their own environment.
Of course there are exceptions, and everyone probably knows of someone sent home by the hospital who ended up coming back in a rush or delivered unplanned at home but childbirth can never be an exact science as every woman and baby are unique.Smile

Patsy thanks for clearing that up for me. I have never been in the same situation so never understood why they would be sent home or who gets to stay. I have a fear of being sent home that i am thinking if labour starts i am gonna stay until i can not think properly because of contractionsSmile.

patsy375 · 27/02/2014 14:21

Lol blessed sounds like a plan!

mamapants · 27/02/2014 15:53

Also worth checking with your midwife as where I am they will come and see you at home to check your progress and advise whether to go in or not- at least they did that for some people I know. Seems a little bit less stressful than going back and forth to hospital.

mamapants · 27/02/2014 15:59

And thanks to everyone re reassurance on the jabbing pains. Its good to know its just one of those things and not something to worry about.

LeeHandy · 27/02/2014 20:09

patsy that makes sense but then this lady went from less than 3 cm to 8 cm in 5 hours which is really quick.. oh well, everyone's case is unique as well so no point in thinking about other people. Smile

lee I went from 2cm to fully dilated in 2.5 hrs with ds... Shock then spent three hours pushing the bugger out

Feeling very tired and increasingly irritable these days. Bump is so low I have to lift it up to sit down on the loo! I also had some bloody discharge the other night...not sure what that means. Still only 34wks so would rather she stayed in for a bit longer! Easier to look after while she's inside too... Starting to feel a bit nauseous again, anyone else had a return to this?

ChurrosConChocolate · 27/02/2014 21:40

I agree with patsy, would much rather be labouring at home than in hospital and are more likely to progress quickly. I'd be so happy to only have to labour a couple of hours at hospital! Sounds like a pretty good birth story to me Smile

misty I'm getting more and more tired too and also been a bit refluxy at night. Do you think the bloody discharge could have been a show???! Hmm, I think your body is getting ready...

BlessedAssurance · 28/02/2014 10:28

misty same here with nausea and the tiredness. One day i was running around feeling as light as a feathet, the next when i tried to get out of bed i felt like a whale. The change was so dramatic i thought i was sickSmile. My breathing changed overnight, now i have to breath with my mouth open like a fish out of water and its noisy too. I groan all the time. This has all happened this week so i think my body is getting prepared. It better be 40 weeks this time!!!

LeeHandy · 01/03/2014 08:29

misty talk to your midwife about the bloody discharge if it continues. I had some at 32 weeks and my consultant said it was either erosion or show.
I would be thrilled if I had just 5 hours of labour! fingers crossed! Smile
I am feeling pretty happy that I am on the home stretch now. I need to pack my hospital bags!

NakedMum33And3rd · 01/03/2014 12:36

Hello!

Thought I'd join this thread! I'm 33+3 weeks pg with DC2. Got DS who will be 2yrs in 3 weeks.
Obviously haven't been able to read whole thread but wanted to join in the fun!

I am too feeling heavy and nauseous. Oh the joys of the 3rd trimester!

Vikkijayne2507 · 01/03/2014 13:57

Hello naked welcome to the thread.

I was a right moody cow yesterday, everything my oh said I winged at and barked at him for. He was very good actually and didnt rise to my provocation and made me tea when we got home and got me a blanket and i proceeded to sleep for 3 hours. I needed a nap lol like a grumpy toddler.

Had drs appointment yesterday (everyone has a dr here not just midwife in Portugal) Baby is head down with his head to my right as I thought he was as he likes to headbutt my pelvic bone and right thigh on occasion. He is back to belly as well hence why I feel his feet moving but not his hands much as they are facing inwards. He does like to worry me I dont feel much movement during the day and have to wait until 1am before he decides to wiggle away and I can feel his feet or maybe its his knee. Dr said that I shouldnt worry and wait to feel 10 movements when hes at his most active in an hour if not wait another hour and if not then go to a and e and get it checked. His hb was fine at the appt and after evil nurse woman saying I needed to be careful of my weight this week they said its all good and bump has very little fat and uterus size isnt overly big at all I guess he went through a big growth spurt a couple of weeks ago and now steadied out but im on the average line as I should be. I just had a bitch of a nurse last time who made me feel like crap.

I have pretty much done hospital bag for baby just need to put mine together. The nice nurse at the hospital gave me some tips on what to bring so that was good and she said its good to have it ready at this stage as you just never know how quick labour will be and also if oh has to go back home to get stuff its better he doesnt have to choose what you want as he will most likely mess it up lol.

misty I was told that you can lose bits and pieces of bloody discharge but if you arnt having lots and if your not having pains its quite normal, i would mention it to your midwife t next appt or give them a ring if you need reassurance. My dr said just to ring if im worried its better to not worry.

I am also getting nausea on and off.

34 + 3 weeks

Hi naked, welcome to the thread.

Hope everyone's having a nice weekend. Can you believe it's march already? We're all having our babies next month!!!! Though from the sounds of it I think some of you are gearing up to have a baby this month Wink .

I've been busy getting as much uni work done as possible over the last week, so when the baby comes I can have a break from it all. I need to get myself sorted out and pack my hospital bag this week too. So much to do still!

Hope everyones having a nice weekend.

Hi all, and welcome naked :)

I've had a bit more blood when wiping, and tons of bh, but I'm not too worried as I'm sure it'd be obvious if something were happening? And she's moving a LOT. Saying that, I might make a start on a labour bag this week Grin ...which I didn't do until 39wks or so with ds!

Just discovered my bloody work have carried on paying me even though my contract ended in January. Piss up and brewery comes to mind Angry we thought the bank balance was a bit too healthy. Lots of phone calls to make on Monday. Joy.

Feeling lots of limbs and seeing pointy things moving so I'm wondering if she's back to back...better blow that ball up! Also, felt her breathing yesterday (rhythmic movement of my belly) which was weird Confused can't believe there's a human being in there!

Welcome Naked! x Grin

BlessedAssurance · 01/03/2014 22:10

Misty that is not good news about being paid when you are no longer employed, i guess you have to give the money back, what a bummer.
Hello Naked and welcome. All the fun is here!!!
Hi Tinpy good that you will be getting a break soon.
Vikki sorry to hea you got a dracula of a nurse and also happy to hear of the positive feedbac from the other professionals. Some people do not know how to be kind.

My babyshower has gone great. It was lovely to see my friends and catch up with them and i think they had a great time too. Only my feet are not happy..

Trinpy · 02/03/2014 14:21

misty have you spoken to a mw or doctor about the bleeding yet?

ChurrosConChocolate · 02/03/2014 15:20

blessed glad the baby shower went well! I knew it would in the end Wink

Vicky I'm also in a serious grump at the moment! Glad all went well with the doctor though.

misty hmm, have you asked the midwife about the bleeding? I'm sure it is nothing but I always think it is good to check if it is blood. Is it red or brown? Annoying about your work, hope it isn't too much hassle to sort out. Get yourself on your hands and knees if you think she is back to back!

welcome naked!

Aaargh, can't believe everyone is thinking about hospital bags already! My email from the NHS also told me I should be getting it organised... Feel so unprepared at the moment. My bedroom is in chaos as DH builds a new wardrobe (and old one is still in there so it's very crowded.) Need to wash baby things but it just keeps raining and have a massive list of work I need to get done! I haven't even filled in my form for Maternity Allowance yet.... And DH is away most of the next 2 weeks so I'm probably going to be too knackered to do much more than taking care of DS.
less than 2 months to go - don't come early baby!!!

CountdowntoSummer · 02/03/2014 16:27

Hi All, I've never posted here before.. I'm due on the 13th of April with my first baby at Watford General. So far I've not been to any Ante natal classes as I'm not convinced how useful they are. I'm trying not to get anxious about the birth and I feel listening to someone go on about the birth for couple of hours will only raise my anxiety..Is it a must to go for these classes?

Trinpy · 02/03/2014 17:13

Hi Countdown. Welcome to the thread. It's up to you whether you go to antenatal classes or not. I went to the NHS ones and found them really useful. I thought I knew most of it, but I ended up learning a lot and I feel much more confident knowing what I can expect. They cover a lot more than just the birth in the the classes, so you could always go to some classes and not others? I think it's worth it to at least read up on what to expect in the different stages though and what pain relief is available, if you haven't done this already.

Churros I've got 1 month until my dd and still haven't packed my hospital bag, so Im not that prepared!

NakedMum33And3rd · 02/03/2014 17:29

Hi countdown I'm due on the 16th at watford with my 2nd DC. Maybe see you there! Are u going to the ABC or consultant unit? We hope for ABC but my bump has been misbehaving since 27weeks so might be too early for midwife unit.

Cannotbelieveit · 02/03/2014 20:17

Welcome countdown! Just pick and choose which classes to go to? If you want to breastfeed then go along to that one for sure.

Mine and DH's 1st anniversary today and we spent half the day doing an intensive clean of the house!!

32+1 Grin

CountdowntoSummer · 03/03/2014 13:09

Trinpy- thank you. I've sent the application today morning and waiting to hear back from the class coordinator.

NakedMum- Nice to hear from someone local :-) I'm booked in with ABC.

Cannotbelieveit- Thank you and belated anniversary wishes.
