jazz oh blimey, I'm sorry to be dishing out contradictory advice! Go with your specialist, and ignore me! Everyone is different, and what works for me might not work for you - I found things like porridge to be completely unhelpful, but try as many things as you can whilst you have a little leeway, so you know what works for you. Keep a detailed food diary, so you can refer back to it, it really helps, and if necessary you can show it to your specialist for back-up if their advice doesn't work for you. Regular diabetics need to avoid fats, as visceral fat (eg around the abdomen) is really bad, but we need calories! Key thing though, which I will say, is that carbs (bread, pasta, rice) are different from carbohydrates (vegetables, fruits) as the latter has more complex nutritional profiles (and fibre) and are therefore "good" to eat. If you can't control your GD whilst consuming breads (which I couldn't) you can get the carb calories you need through vegetables and pulses (which is why the Atkins diet won't let you eat a lot of vegetables, as it tries to induce ketosis which is only possible through zero carbs at all). A meal which isn't entirely protein (eg just bacon and eggs) will have some carbs in it, so don't try to add on rice/potato if they don't work for you.
Right, I am absolutely going to stop trying to be helpful and confusing you in the process! If it would help at all I can share my best low-blood-sugar meals with you, but as I said, what works for me might not work for you.
Stick with it! It will get a lot easier when you know what you can eat.
