Thanks midnight oh I know that most allergies are just random, and he could have had the same issues either way, but the way she was over cautious I'm sure made things worse. - the poor boy had never even had a go on a bike until he was 16 as she said they were 'too dangerous' that's the type of mother she was/is. - she will be horrified with my take on things with 'her granddaughter'!

(Mil is lovely really, in small doeses, we are just very different)

midnight1983 · 18/11/2013 12:05

Yeah that sounds quite extreme! I know a lot of people also believe breastfeeding prevents allergies, and I'm not sure how scientific that is, but I wasn't breastfed either...

liberuna · 18/11/2013 13:50

not sure about allergies but that mama's milk contains antibodies that cannot be got from anywhere else is true.

liberuna · 18/11/2013 13:52

"can't be got" ? Confused my goodness can't speak English today

whinge alert - couldn't get to sleep till late last night then woke up at 5am for no good reason, fell asleep when I should have been getting up for work. Called in 'pregnancy sick' at midday now my whole sleep pattern is off... and I don't wanna!!!!

lumpylumps · 18/11/2013 14:23

Saw my mw today and she was lovely. She told me I had to take this week off and rest. She said I look crap!!! She was talking about me seeing the consultant to get some diamorphine for my pelvis but I really don't want to do that. I'd rather be in pain and have a healthy baby than risk his health for my own comfort!!

mrsksays · 18/11/2013 14:50

liberuna My sleep is effed at the moment too as I'm streaming with a cold. I'm doused in Olbas Oil and I can barely smell it. Both nights at the weekend I was awake every couple of hours and eventually got up at about 6ish just because the tossing and turning and snotting on the pillow was doing my head in. Shattered today but doesn't seem worth taking a day off when I'm my own boss and can just work from the office sofa and get my staff to make me cups of tea all day if I need to haha!

CookieMonster1971 · 18/11/2013 15:21

Midnight, I'm curious: what is a 'dads in slings-type place'? Do you live on a kibbutz?

Just returned from a lovely lunch with my friend who also came loaded with gifts for baby and me. Very grateful for such kindness Smile

Cookie, lol no! We just live in a part of north London where people are very into slings and granola and recycling and flip flops and all that jazz.

liberuna, I think this is why I want to try and breastfeed but I also realise it doesn't work out for everyone, so I'm not trying not to feel too much pressure about it. I do really want to try it though.

mrsk, I have just gotten over a bout of two week bronchitis so I really sympathise. Get well soon :)

CookieMonster1971 · 18/11/2013 16:00

Midnight, do you spot many cartoon socks round your end?

midnight1983 · 18/11/2013 16:01

Cookie, what are cartoon socks?!

BadlyWrittenPoem · 18/11/2013 16:14

I've only given birth in hospital once and we were told that they would come out to your car to check the carseat but they let us walk out with baby in a sling.

Cool, I love Caleb but DH thinks it is too unusual. Micah is nice too, I have a friend with a Micah.

Magpie, a sling library should have demo dolls for you to practise on while you are there.

Blockette, I can sympathise with you as I have had issues with my DH having reactions to peanuts recently. It is much worse than he had led me to believe but he refuses to go to the GP to get an Epipen. WRT causes/heritability of allergies, there's not really a lot of concrete evidence of exactly why some people have them but family history of allergies does make them more likely. DH and I have between us hayfever, eczema, asthma, cat allergy and peanut allergy and so far DD1 has eczema and possibly mild hayfever (one of my brothers "grew out" of hayfever and she didn't have it last year so am hoping it was a temporary thing) and DD2 looks like she possibly has eczema too. I just breastfeed as long as possible (which is supposed to reduce the risk of allergies), try not to be OTT about cleanliness and avoid using cleaning products and toiletries with loads of chemicals in them.

BadlyWrittenPoem · 18/11/2013 16:15

(We did have a car with a carseat in it - we just keep the carseat in the car and don't carry the baby around in it.)

Oh I see, literal cartoon socks! No, more like hand-spun hemp socks...

Coolhand · 18/11/2013 20:35

On allergies - research does show breastfeeding helps so it's good to do if you can but genes also play a part.

My brother was breastfed the longest and he was the one that suffered all the allergies:asthma, slight eczema, reactions to dust/cats etc. I was the only one not breastfed and suffered no allergies - my dad suffered from allergies though and my bro is his double in every way: looks, temperament etc so I guess genes trumped in that one!

I'm off to midwife tmrw morning, mostly just for my Mat B1 form but looking forward to having a sneaky listen into baby's heartbeat.

dizhin79 · 18/11/2013 21:00

Hi all, had mw appointment 2day, lovely to hear a little heart beat 4 the little bump.

Caught about 1 minute of Doctor Who last night. Woke last night all of a sudden dreaming about horrible angry stone angels!! Was very spaced out doing work today Confused

lumpylumps · 18/11/2013 21:07

I know I'm probably being really thick but what is the mat b1 from for?? Is that the one that you use to get your prescription card or is it a totally different form?

BadlyWrittenPoem · 18/11/2013 21:12

MATB1 is the one you need for maternity leave.

Beccadugs · 18/11/2013 21:17

I sent a copy of my matb1 off with my form. Had an email asking for the original. Utterly ridiculous. Why won't a copy do?

PainAuxRaisins · 18/11/2013 21:26

Managed to get the MAT B1 from my GP (next mw appt not til New Year's Eve!) and my HR dept already pestering me for it. Lumpy my mw gave me the 'free prescription' form at my booking-in appt ages ago. Are you still waiting for yours?

lumpylumps · 18/11/2013 21:32

Ah!! No, I thought the mat b1 was the prescription one. I got that months ago!! Better ring the mw tomorrow and get my mat b1 then!! Oops!!

PainAuxRaisins · 18/11/2013 21:34

Quick straw poll: how many of you currently have crappy colds/sore throats/runny noses etc?? And did you have the flu jab already?

BionicEar · 18/11/2013 21:40

Pains - I have had random snuffy nose in the evenings with a random cough that makes me choke and gag in the night (literally struggling to breathe sometimes), but only mostly occurs during the night ever since about a week after the flu jab. Unsure if related but a bit Hmm about it.
