I am on just statutory ladies so I feel your pain on how we are going to afford me being on mat leave. However, I was speaking to an American friend the other day who told me that they get 6 weeks mat leave in total, and no maternity pay at all so that made me feel I should be grateful for the little I do get!

wm3010 · 15/10/2013 10:15

Just saw your news Mcredhead, so sorry to hear that. Be kind to yourself x

thistlelicker · 15/10/2013 10:32

Thanks Mcred xx

NannyPlumForPM · 15/10/2013 10:49

oh mcredhead :( what sad news again. I hope you find strength to continue trying when you're ready. lots of wishes and hugs to you.

I wasn't being boastful about my mat pay (sorry if it seemed like that - thats not my personality at all!)

Last pg I was entitled to nothing but I did get a sure start grant of about £250/£500? It's worth looking into that. Especially you moomin because I was at uni so I'm sure you'll be entitled! Not sure about funded PHD's though? HTH

Spirael · 15/10/2013 10:57

So sorry to hear that, McRed! :( There's been lots of sad news on this thread.

Quite jealous of some of the generous maternity packages that some of you are getting! I get 6 weeks at 90% and then just base SMP after that until 9 months after the birth, which is barely going to touch our mortgage/bills! Both DH and I work FT, but I'm the main earner.

We've been saving up to cope, deliberately spaced out our children so that DD will be starting school (and out of paid childcare!) as things start to get tight and we've had some help from my lovely Nana who passed away earlier this year and has left us some inheritance money. I think she'd have approved of another great-grandchild. :)

We're also hoping to negotiate with the bank to move onto an interest only mortgage for the period I'm on maternity leave. Might be an idea for anyone else on a mortgage? As long as you have a good credit history and can provide a headed letter from your work stating the date they expect you back in, the bank are normally ok with it.

Still struggling with MS here, but it's not been quite as bad lately. I think it's because I don't seem to be quite as bloated. I seem to remember reading that bloating is worst at around 6/7 weeks as the digestive system adapts to pregnancy.

hobbjobb · 15/10/2013 11:06

So sorry to hear your news mcred

My booking in appt is this afternoon and I am a bit nervous I am going to get blasted for my weight, eek

bluestone85 · 15/10/2013 11:19

So so sorry to hear you sad news McRed. Take care of yourself and do keep lurking around :) Thanks xx

I have my booking appointment tomorrow, which seems to have taken forever to get here. I'm hoping she can send me for an early scan so that I can see if little bean is ok. Especially after the scary bleeding. I know its "normal" to have some, but its still scary.

Good luck today hobb. I know that I will be told off about my weight tomorrow too :D xx

AliOh · 15/10/2013 11:30

So sorry to hear your news mcred we've had such awful news on this thread :(

I must be in the lucky few in terms of smp etc - i work part time so am on a lowish income anyway, I earn just under the threshold so will get 90% of pay throughout maternity leave so wont be losing out on an awful lot. Plus at the moment we are not entitled to working tax credits as a couple as DP is under 25 but once the baby arrives we will be.

dobedobedo · 15/10/2013 11:45

So sorry to hear your bad news mcred - I hope you're looking after yourself. xxxx

Next year is the first year we won't be entitled to WTC as we've earned too much this year. I'm hoping to work until at least 5th April, at least that way I won't have to pay any tax on my maternity pay as I won't earn enough next tax year.

bluestone85 · 15/10/2013 11:57

I now know what everyone was talking about from the sneezing and it hurting. First time its hurt doing that. It was weird, after the pain, there was a kind of fluttering... probably all the built up gas... hahaha :) (sorry if that TMI!)

dobedobedo · 15/10/2013 12:13

I haven't sneezed in so long - I broke my ribs a few months ago and kind of trained myself not to sneeze as it was excruciating!

I find that puking (sorry tmi) makes me feel as if my stomach muscles go into a little ball - like braxton hicks or something.

Minions · 15/10/2013 12:27

McRed, so sorry to hear your news. Take care of yourself, hope you hear quickly about what's next.

x

impatientlywaiting · 15/10/2013 13:19

Hi all, so after my heightened anxiety and scary dreams I got in touch with a charity near where I live who offer free scans.

It's a Christian charity and the main purpose is to dissuade people from having terminations, but to keep their sonographer's skills up to date they also offer free scans to any pregnant woman who asks. So I called in today and they gave me a volunteer scan pretty much straight away.

Was so nervous but saw heartbeat and the baby moving. It was really cute and such a relief. They were lovely too and gave me 3 free pictures. Not sure if anyone is in the Newcastle area but they said they are always happy to scan volunteers, they're called tyneside pregnancy advice centre if anyone is close by and wants to call up.

impatientlywaiting · 15/10/2013 13:24

Added the photo to my mumsnet page if anyone wanted to have a look.

bluestone85 · 15/10/2013 13:32

Ouch Dobe that sounds very painful indeed, no wonder you don't want to sneeze!

impatiently Glad everything if fine and you saw your little one wriggling around, sounds awesome! So looking forward to mine :) Can't see your profile for photos, have you made it public? xx

bluestone85 · 15/10/2013 13:44

impatiently awww, lovely picture :) Perfect little bean! Its a shame they make the pictures so small, as you can't really see them all that well xx

dobedobedo · 15/10/2013 13:48

Awww impatiently what a lovely pic! You must be so pleased!

I have a midwife appointment in an hour. I'm nervous for some reason. The last appointment I had, she couldn't hear the heartbeat with the doppler - I thought I was 12 weeks (going by dates) but I was only 5! No wonder! It hasn't helped with the anxiety though.

Hope I can hear it this time. xxx

bluestone85 · 15/10/2013 13:52

Good luck dobe. I'm sure everything will be fine. Even when you are further along in first trimester they can't always get the heartbeat through the doppler, because the baby is still so small, so don't worry :) Let us know how you get on xx

moominleigh94 · 15/10/2013 14:06

Sorry to hear your news McRed

Lovely picture impatiently

Hope everyone's doing well today.

I'm on edge and tense and miserable and so pessimistic. It's not going to go away until after the scan. OH keeps telling me to be optimistic but I think I'm kidding myself that it's going to hurt less when they give us the bad news if I've expected it.

bluestone85 · 15/10/2013 14:14

Moomin I'm in the exact same boat. Its hard to not to. As soon as the scan has happened I know I will relax a lot too :) xx

bluestone85 · 15/10/2013 14:16

Its hard to not to???? Clearly too tired to make sense now! *Its hard not to be pessimistic.

McRedHead · 15/10/2013 14:18

Thank you all. Just had a call from hospital and have an appointment with EPAU on Monday for repeat scan. I assume if nothing has happened until then I will have make decisions about how I want to proceed.
moomin Expecting bad news doesn't make the bad news any easier. Positive vibes and positive attitude. Good luck x
I'm sharing out my lemon drizzle cake for anyone who wants it. (It's gluten, egg, fat, sugar & guilt free with all the taste!)

CbeebiesIsMyLife · 15/10/2013 15:37

Moomin you sound like your really struggling with this pregnancy. I really want to come over there and give you a hug and tell you it will be ok. I know personally that expecting bad news doesn't stop the pain, I'm on pregnancy number 9 and can tell you that the 6 babies I lost hurt like hell. If it's hard to be optimistic try not to be too hard on your self. Allow thoes moments where you look at baby clothes and think about names and just for a moment forget that anything could go wrong. It's good to allow yourself to hope.

snoozysleeper · 15/10/2013 15:40

So sorry to hear your news mcred Flowers

dobedobedo · 15/10/2013 15:57

Hey guys. Just back from the midwife. Erm... Wow.

She could feel my uterus has popped out already. Weird at only 12 weeks, right? Also, she got the doppler out and we heard a galloping horses heartbeat! Grin I lost it and started crying cos I'm such a GIRL!

So she said the sonographer was wrong about dates cos baby is clearly bigger than 10 weeks. She put me at 12 weeks!

I guess I keep expecting there to be nothing in there. Gonna celebrate with some Ben and Jerry's frozen yoghurt!
