Hello ladies.. the previous thread is almost full so I thought it's time to move on to a new one to mark the start of trimester 2. Here's to fewer bouts of sickness and more "glowing" all around!

Haven't popped on here for a couple of days but all ok here. I've just had my flu jab tonight too choc and my arm feels a bit stiff. My next midwife appointment is 2 weeks today.

Hope everyone is ok! Sorry to hear some of you are still not feeling great. Sending lots of non-sicky days your way!

Great reading all of your advise on prams ladies! We tried a few out at a local pram shop last weekend. Think we have decided on the Bugaboo Cameleon but can't decide on the colour yet. Have decided not to buy the pram until around Christmas. So far we have bought a rocker, fluffy dog and a baby bath. Has anyone else started buying yet?

hello ladies

I hope i find you well. Well it is 2am here in good old Oslo and i am wide awake and here on MN, go figure. I went to bed early because i was too tired to do anything and now sleep has gone.

Nothing much to say just popping in for a quick hello. Sorry to hear that some of you are struggling the morning sickness.

Pretty i am 16 weeks gone and have a 3yr old DD so we have everything covered from age zero to 6mnths. I look at the prams you guys are considering and go wow, lucky you. None of them would ever work in in the Norwegian winter. Here we use something resembling mini coopers Grin during winter. Would love to buy a few things for the new baby but decided to wait until the last month when i get my maternity leave. I figured if i was to go into a shop right now and pick something, then it would never end and by the time the baby comes i would have filles the whole place with baby things, better to wait..

Have tou taken the flu jab? Have not talked to my doc yet, i took it when preggo with DD and didn't feel a thing, all went ok. But this time apparently the nurses at my work keep telling me to avoid it because i am healthy and youngConfused as if the flu will care about your age, what to do? advise me ladies please!!!

BeansAndCheese · 24/10/2013 08:12

I had flu in my 20s and I was Ill for a month, DGDh and I could barely look after ourselves we were so Ill. Not to mention the 1919 flu pandemic mainly killed people between 20 and 40. Odd advice!

Cannotbelieveit · 24/10/2013 08:54

Hello everyone! Sorry to hear some are still feeling sick. I haven't been sick yet just feeling nauseas most days now and changing DS's nappy is making me heave!

ChocChaffinchEvilGhostBird · 24/10/2013 09:34

I chose to have the jab, there are zero side affects bar a sore arm for 2 days.
the nurse firmly told me if I got a cold it would have been one I'd got anyway, nowt to do with the jab.

catameringue · 24/10/2013 12:56

Hi all,

So the hospital called to say my downs risk is 1 in 30.

This is upsetting and I would not have an amnio etc, because it doesn't change the fact I intend on having this baby regardless.

That said, dh is pushing for us to pay £600 for the non invasive blood test.

We don't have 600 spare, id have to raid the isa which is meant to cover us during my mat leave.
He said he just wants to know.

I'm not sure I do. It's difficult to think through.

oh Cat

I think I agree with beetle in that the more you can find out, the more prepared you can be.

nevergoogle · 24/10/2013 14:06

my vomitting got completely out of hand. GP has recommended I rest for a week so I'm signed off work while I try Avomine to get it under control.

I've just been for a walk. Walking past shop windows and I've got a bump! All of a sudden I look pregnant. Is this what a few days rest does?

LightTripper · 24/10/2013 15:25

So sorry to hear that cata.

I can totally understand where both you and your DH are coming from. Did they say which bit of the test gave rise to the risk? I'm wondering if there is any more information you could get through the normal NHS testing (e.g. 20 week scan or quadruple test)? It is good to be prepared, I agree - but I totally see your point too that this is a big chunk of your cushion gone and a 97% chance that it tells you that you don't have to prepare for anything bad at all (and obvoiusly 3% chance it confirms you need to prepare for Downs).

There is no technical/medical rush for Harmony that I know of, so at least you don't have a deadline, you have a bit of time to think about it and maybe do some research on Downs anyway? Probably best to decide once you've processed the initial shock, and then you are less likely to make a decision you regret?

I guess another option could be a private scan to redo the nuchal fold and blood tests if you're still within the right dates? I think that would be a bit less at £180 - don't know if they'd then let you decide a few days later whether to go through with the Harmony or not (so the total is stil capped to 600) but I don't see why not: might be worth calling them and seeing if it's an option if it's something you're interested in? If the risk from the new nuchal and bloods was lower, you might be more relaxed about skipping the Harmony?

Re: the flu jab I had mine last week. No bad side effects that I noticed (had the tail end of a cold anyway, but don't think it got any worse). I have had what I believe was flu once - not an experience I want to repeat! Went to absolutely fine playing a silly board game with friends to collapsing into bed completely out of it hallucinating the room was full of people standing around talking to each other in about 45 minutes flat. Took me AGES to get back on my feet. Can't imagine dealing with that and pregancy, even leaving aside the pregancy risks...

Sorry about your vomiting nevergoogole - glad your GP was able to give you something and sign you off. I do wonder if mine is getting me down partly because I am now busier at work, so not managing to make so many concessions to it. I'm sure rest is a good idea anyway.

BlessedAssurance · 24/10/2013 16:40

cata so sorry to hear that about your baby. I have nothing to add to what the wise ladies have already said, other than sending you my very own special hug. Here is to hoping that all will be well.

Thanks ladies for the advice re-the flu jab. I think i will just go in to work on monday and get one.

nevergoogle hope you get better after taking your meds. Nausea is irritating and makes one hopeless.

catameringue · 24/10/2013 19:00

Thanks guys.

I feel mixed about the test but dh strongly wants it, so I will respect his wish. He said he just wants to know so he can read up on it and plan.

I feel both angry and sad. It feels so unfair.

I've eaten six packets of space raiders and now my mouth is on fire.

Bodeccia · 24/10/2013 20:30

Ah cata how tough for you guys. I can understand your dp's desire to get the test, but equally if it doesn't change anything, what is the point?

This baby will bring you so much joy no matter what. Focus on that Thanks

bundaberg · 24/10/2013 21:46

cata what testing have you had so far?

a friend of mine was given a 1 in 27 risk based on her scan. But the combined blood test then reduced that.

her son is fine.

does the £600 blood test give you a 100% certain result like an amnio would?

LeeHandy · 24/10/2013 21:52

That's very worrying cata. Thanks I have read similar stories where a repeated test does not give the same high risk numbers but good luck to you and your dh on whatever you decide to do. I hope it turns out well.
nevergoogle glad you got the time off to rest. I have also started showing in the last two days but am 17+4 so it's probably time. I am wondering if I need to make a mass announcement in my office or just let people guess or ask whenever they notice. I think I will probably go for the second option.

OP posts:
wendle70 · 24/10/2013 22:41

Oh cata what a dilemma. I completely understand why you'd think if you have the baby anyway why do the expensive blood test but this test may well save you months of unnecessary anxiety as it is so much more accurate. Have you checked you can't have it on the NHS as I know it is being rolled out to quite a few hospitals as the next test for high risk patients? Worth checking.

Flu jab tomorrow. Agree having had terrible flu once i could not imagine surviving that pregnant.

Holiday next week. Wont be mega restful but have been working hard too and like you light am wondering if it's exacerbating the sickness. 14 weeks tomorrow...just counting down till magic promised 16 week mark!

Have massive bump. Look 5 months gone. Is weird. Watched peter andre (dont judge me my appetite for trash tv has increased of recent) and his girlfriend was 5 months with smaller bump than me. I can feel a Kim Kardashian putting on 3 stone in pregnancy thing coming on. So much for being skinny with a bump! And with all the puking too! This baby's going to be big! And no I havent bought a jot yet..going to leave that a while until no longer feeling sick.

catameringue · 24/10/2013 22:59

Bunda - I've had the scan and the blood test.

Wendle - my trust doesn't offer it but they gave me names of clinics and said it was up to me.

I just need to get through work tomorrow, and focus on nice things like the baby show on Saturday, and going to a firework display.

On the size front I am massive and only 14 weeks. Love my h and m maternity jeans!

bundaberg · 24/10/2013 23:01

I don;t know if you've ever come across kelle hampton's blog? or anyone else?

this is the birth story of Nella who was born with down syndrome (they had no idea)

It's felt like a long week, but I'm looking forward to my weekend away. Have stocked up on biscuits and fruit to take with me, and just keeping everything crossed that I have a non vommy night on Saturday!

Hope everybody else has a good weekend. Glad you have good stuff lined up cata, and keeping everything crossed that your results come back super-fast!

Aaarrrggghhh. Have yet to announce my pregnancy at work and had to sit around listening to people (including my boss) bitch about maternity leave and people coming back to work and going straight off again.
I wouldn't mind reminding the really bitchy one about it in a few years when she'll be wanting to go on maternity!

ChocChaffinchEvilGhostBird · 25/10/2013 17:26

waaaa mamapants bad karma for them. I think it wise Never to bitch about such things, eg being late, being off sick, as one day it will be you is your boss a woman? she should know better

Vikkijayne2507 · 26/10/2013 08:04

loads of chat since I was last on. Just been catching up. If I was in that position re downs I wouldn't pay 600 I would get prepared read up on downs. I waa brought up with a severely autistic sister no tests for that. I have met tobs of people with downs syndrome and it can vary greatly the condition. I would get an idea I couldn't justify 600 pounds
