BTW, tried dd2 in her own little bed last night next to dd1. She tossed and turned and sat up and cryed (i was there, can't leave them to cry) and at 2 a.m i was SOOOOOOOOO uncomfortable lying with her on the single bed i gave up and took her in my bed where she fell asleep happy as Larry!
I guess she's not ready but i'll try again tonight as i don't want to 'claim' her cot for the new baby!

Wish me luck and sleep!

calvemjoe · 19/07/2006 20:54

Too hot to actually write anything valid or useful but hope everyone is coping ok in the heat (obviously I'm not)

Just 7 weeks till lo arrives and should be getting they keys to our new house in 2-3 weeks so hopefully going to be moved in in time.

Am making ds grow up this week, we have 'lost' his dummy and taken away his nappies bless him. However in 2 days he has done 2 wee's and no poo's and neither were on his potty!

Hellkat, glad you like the frozen water bottle, it really is great.

Looka fter yourselves and your lo's and, lysettes, hope you're ok, it's been a while since we heard from you.

appyday · 19/07/2006 21:24

Angeliz definately good luck for tonight, but don't pile extra stresses on yourself in this heat.
Cori well done to you and DD with potty training.
We just bought DD a toddler toilet seat which she had to try out immediately-wees and poos. She sat there did all her business then said " Wow, plop plop...just like Mummy". So glad we were alone.
To make you all jealous we went to Wookey Hole caves on Monday the temp in there is a constant 11c.Heaven. Tuesday I spent an hour climbing round an indoor play area, fortunately I haven't gone into labour, and today was work and air conditioning, hurrah!
Here's to cooler conditions soon, please.

liquidclocks · 19/07/2006 23:27

I need help!!! I've been invited to a friends 30th birthday do and she wants everyone to dress up as a character from a musical - what does a heavily pregnant woman do? I can't think of any characters who are pregnant - ideas???

Coriander73 · 20/07/2006 08:38

Err..liquid clocks...surely you are exempt from such festivities in this heat & being nearly 8 months pg?!!!!!

Bella23 · 20/07/2006 09:26

Liquidlocks - totally agree with Coriander, surely you have a get out clause.
I don't think there are any musical characters that are preggers - also any costume is going to be HOT!

compo · 20/07/2006 09:49

LC - will put my thinking cap on!!
Just got back from the midwife. She said my platelets are low and wants to check them again in 2 weeks. Has anyone else had this? I asked if it was to do with anameic but she said no and there is nothing I can do about it. I said what does it mean then and she said if they are too low I can't have an epidural

Bella23 · 20/07/2006 09:59

Compo - just googled low platelets and they play a part in your blood clotting. It looks like its normal for them to fall slightly during pregnancy due to extra blood we ladies are making. I think in next couple of weeks if its hasn't fallen any more then you should be ok

muminaquandary · 20/07/2006 10:00

Hi everyone hope you are getting relief from the weather ... !

Otherwise, just a quick info-dump for those of you having c/sections - I had a follow-up appt as I wanted to change the date to my EDD for various reasons. Gathered a bit of useful info, altho obv only relevant to my hospital, but thought you might want to know:

  • Pain relief policy : Spinal only, no hand held (eg morphine) as makes mum too woozy during crucial bonding time; then oral painkillers, eg Voltarol; catheter put in after painkiller & removed the next day (@6am!!!!)
  • Suturing methods and policy at the hospital, eg staples vs stitching, what kind of suture material : they use monocrysome (sp?) to suture, no staples; dissolvable
  • Policy on skin to skin contact : prefer husband to hold baby until stitching finished; midwife takes baby first to resuscitaire, performs APGAR, quick wipe down, etc
  • Who holds baby while mum getting stiched? (see above)
  • Ask them to respect the fact that I don't want crappy radio on in the background during section (!) : bring your own CD
  • Getting b'feeding established: can I stay until it is established or do I have to go home after 5 nights (they have put this as usual maximum stay except for medical complications) : only stay in more than 3 nights for medical complications
  • Recovery period & any pointers for recovery : level of fitness and health of mother pre-op are crucial; get moving gently but early; 2 hours spent in recovery then go to ward Other q's that came up:
  • no dimmed lights as deemed too dangerous for c/s
  • will meet the team the day before
  • no wound drains unless complications
  • hosp will shave you; otherwise DIY to level of pubic bone
clairemow · 20/07/2006 10:04

morning all,

still hot here and more humid than yesterday. Left DS with Grandma, asking to go and feed the ducks, so she'll be going out in the heat while I sit in air-conned office. Nice.

Homemama, I've spoken to a few people who had electives second time round, and they've all said the recovery was much easier than with an emergency. Last time, my recovery wsa quick after the first week, when I was v. slow. But def no lifting your toddler for quite a while I think. I am a bit worried about this too. On the other hand, I know 3 people who had vaginal deliveries with breech babies, so you could discuss this with your hospital. It would hurt like hell though I imagine (not that I'm saying head first delivery wouldn't too)and you'd probably have to have stitches etc.

~Liquid, sorry to hear you're sick again. I think it might be quite common esp if it's after you've eaten - our stomachs can't hold as much any more, being all squashed up with baby!!

Goodness, pregnant musical characters, who don't wear too many clothes. Can't think of anything right now, but if I do during the day, I'll post back...

DS has been waking up in the night really hot - he goes to sleep fine about 7.15 ish, but then the last couple of nights has woken up upset about 11 and 2. Luckily he's settling back really quickly after a drink and re-finding his pillow/teddy (cries of "where's my pillow, where's my teddy?" woke me up..). I feel so sorry for him, I can't make him any cooler, and he will insist on pulling the sheet right up under his chin - even if I go in and take it off, an hour later, he's pulled it back.

Appyday, Wookey hole sounds lovely and cool - it's not far from us either. Are you West country based too? We're in Bristol.

Sorry for long post..

Bella23 · 20/07/2006 10:05

muminaquandary - useful info as tomorow I am having another scan to see if my low lying placenta has moved and therefore will require a C section. GULP at the catheter though!!

liquidclocks · 20/07/2006 10:06

Compo - found this link for you Low Platelets It doesn't say anything about not having an epidural though - I'd ask you GP or even the consultant about this one as I think you want a definitive answer about what the complications might be and how they'd deal with them, that way there'll be no unnecessary surprises in labour. A friend of mine had a blood transfusion last time and found it traumatic as it was not explained to her why theyd done it, though afterwards she realised it was just a precaution she feels if it had been discussed before she would hae been calmer.

I have thought about using the pg exemption card and will if I can't think of anything but it's not really in the party spirit though! - and she's the sort of friend I'll make an effort for

LO still doing half somersaults - hopefully he'll figure it out soon!

Coriander73 · 20/07/2006 10:09

Hi Compo, my platelets have been low all through the pg! I've had to have them tested every two weeks because they need to ensure that they don't drop below 100 (last ones were 107!)(normally they are 250+ per 1000 ml for general public but in pg they drop anyhow for everyone slightly because there is more fluid!). Basically if they are very low in labour they may (worst case scenario)have to do a blood transfusion because the platelets help the red blood cells clot...However if they remain over 100 then it shouldn't be a problem.....I had mine tested again in Tuesday so am waiting to hear!.....As for not having an epidural, my MW said the same (not sure why it matters) at which point the following week they had gone from 102 to 145!!!!! Must have shocked myself into it because let's be honest, I'd like all my options open even if I don't have one!!!!

mabel1973 · 20/07/2006 11:45

morning everyone!
well it's cooled down quite a bit here and as MIL has DS I am pottering in the garden. getting it nice and tidy (with another load of washing on of course) I really have gone in to nesting overdrive!
MIL offered to do some housework for me - which is amazing in itself! and i know I should be incredibly grateful, but just don't like the idea of her rummaging through our stuff - you are all going to call me mad now!
Did a Boots shop yesterday and got all the horrible stuff for my hospital bag - have yet to pack though.
Fingers crossed to everyone with breech babies - lets hope they turn in the next couple of weeks.
Liquid - don't know what to say about your friends 30th!!! But let us know what / who you end up going as!!
Angeliz - I've been through the same with my DS, stick with it, we only had a couple of nights where he didn't settle. I wanted him to get used to a bed now, so that he didn't think the new baby had 'stolen' his cot!

compo · 20/07/2006 13:35

Thanks everyone for the info I knew I could count on you guys. Mine are 145, dropeed from 198 so obviously nothin to worry about just yet - yippee!!
I did have a burst of energy about 6 weeks ago and bought a few things for the labour/hospital bag but have done nothing since. We moved out of the new baby's room but since then the impetus died down and the new baby's room is full of junk. We want to get a new carpet in there and a wardrobe but finances are a bit tricky!! I've bought one pack of newborn nappies - not sure whether I should buy another pack or not just in case the baby is a big 'un (hopefully not but SIL had an 11lb-er!!)

Mabel...YOU'RE MAD MAD MAD!!!!! Accept the help woman!!!!!! ....just hide all the naughty bits -although given current circumstances maybe there aren't many naughty bits to hide?!!!!

Compo, I haven't even thought about my labour bag yet...have promised to do it once I've seen the consultant at 34 weeks

Just come out of a 3.5 hour meeting.....our company is on the verge of merging with another so it was a lot of the post merger changes etc etc....the downside is that my boss is staying on which probably means a goodbye to any hope I had of returning part time in Feb 07. Time to re-do the CV me thinks......

pol26 · 20/07/2006 14:20

Still bloomin' hot here and wilting in this heat. There is a slight breeze but only blows hot air so not really helpful. No rain as yet either... And weather forcast says we have this for another 5 DAYS!!! I seriously am considering taking a chair and sitting in tesco's freezer isle.

DP is out tonight too, not coming home from work- so have DD all day! He is on his works do as he is moving to a new school in September and a bit sad to be leaving now. Feeling sorry for myself as struggling along.

As for having to dress up when preg- you have to be joking!!! It's too hot!

Seem to have found in this preg I never feel well. I really can honestly say I haven't enjoyed it this time round and haven't felt the 'glow' I did last time. I am well and truly fed up with it all now and all I can think is 'roll-on 40 weeks'.

homemama · 20/07/2006 14:29

Mabel, I'm with you! When MIL comes round to babysit, I always make sure there's no bank statements etc hanging around as I know how nosy she is.

Cori, you made me laugh with the 'naughty bits' thing. When we moved into our first home together, FIL came to help put track lights above the kitchen cupboards. We hadn't been up there beforehand nor since until we were moving out 2yrs later. Anyway, when cleaning to move, I discovered 5 dildos of varying shapes and sizes laid out with a manual!
There is no way my FIL couldn't have seen them and he must have just assumed they were ours and kept quiet. What must the previous owner have thought when she realised she'd left them!

Compo, those levels don't seem too low compared to others I have read about. I hope they agree you can still have your epidural.

Oh and if I get my hands on the mean man at the Met Office who promised me rain today....Grrrr!

homemama · 20/07/2006 14:33

Oh and Liquid, you could go as Maria (when a nun) and just wear a black sheet and nothing else!
Get one from argos and make a hole in the top for your neck. Use the pillow case as your habit!

Coriander73 · 20/07/2006 14:53

I'm thinking of buying a pack of frozen peas & sitting on them in the car on the way home.....(sorry if TMI) as I've never had piles like it. Infact, compared to DD this pg has been so so so niggly I can't wait for it to end!! Where are these women that love being pg & glow??!!!

Angeliz · 20/07/2006 16:14

Hi all.
Tried again with dd last night in her own bed and she slept till 1.30 and then woke. I took her in with me around 2 when it was clear she wasn't going off again.
I'm loathe to 'chick her out' as i've co-slept till now from 1 or 2 or 3 a.m or whenever she woke to come in for a cuddle. I think if she can stay in her own little bed for half the night then at least i'll be able to do at least one night feed concentrating on the baby and she'll not get constantly disturbed.

We shall see but i'm not stressing. Just didn't want to 'claim her cot' as you say as soon as the baby comes.

Just seen the Midwife and she gave me my Home Birth pack. Everything from pads to stitching up appaaratus Must hide it from the dd's
She checked with the G.P about them coming out to check the baby and they said it would probably be fine. The midwife told the G.P it wouldn't be the end of the world if i had to take the baby to Hospital to be checked which , although she's a lovely midwife, pissed me off a bit. If i have to drag the baby out the same day it defeats the whole object of a homebirth I said as much and then the Midwife said, "You are sure you want a Homebirth?". I AM but for the whole reason of staying at home.
Sigh!
Anyway, my baby is............HEAD DOWN NOW YEY!! She said he is 'well down'.

Reading through this thread, why have we all decided to do massive things as the babies are being born. Move house ect.

we're all mad!!!

Angeliz · 20/07/2006 16:19

Coriander! Ouch!!

mrsmaddyd · 20/07/2006 16:38

I found the best place to be when 33 weeks pregnant and theres a heat wave.

THE BATH and then stand in front of an open window to dry off, best done without any over looking nieghbours or are likely to be harpooned

Bella23 · 20/07/2006 16:51

Coriander - poor you !
A tip I discovered that helps keeps me regular is a pro-biotic drink first thing in the morning - Actimel is nice.
This seems to work like clockwork for me, better than any bowl of allbran etc

MrsMaddyd - I am taking up to 3 baths a day as just feeling so sticky at the moment and seem to pong within a few hours no matter how many products I use!!

Angeliz - silly Midwife, if you have to haul arse to the hospital to get the baby checked then you will miss out on all the relaxation of being at home etc!

Homemama - that's so funny at the dildo story, how embarrassing!! 5 - how many does a person need?! Where they all different sizes etc?

Mabel - get the MIL to clean the bathroom / kitchen etc , that way she is kept away from anywhere embarrassing!

Well no rain here or even any sign of it to come..........bugger need some relief please!!

mrsmaddyd · 20/07/2006 16:54

Bella i would bath that much a day too if it wasnt for the toddlers. Its such a relief isnt it. Its under the bbobs thtas the worse. I put some baby talc under them after a bath which i find helps with the pesiring problem. My poor maternity bra needs washing every night
