Hi all! Providing the ladies who are currently in hospital don't give birth before the last 20 posts in our old thread, we've made it to a new one with babies all still staying put for now!

Here's the stats thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/antenatal_clubs/a1694946-September-2013-STATS-THREAD

Welcome newbies! If anyone wants to join the FB group (better for sharing documents and pictures), please message myself or jennimoo with your real life name and email address and we can add you to the group!

Think I've packed 6 things Mooster. 4 lots of "normal" clothes so vests etc and 2 lots of really cute sets to bring baby home in. Have 3 of tiny baby size and 3 newborn size I think.

Haven't packed a changing bag though. Do I need to?

Also just wondering if I need to take bottles & formula incase being doesn't go well?

badguider · 19/08/2013 14:28

Just had my 37+4 MW appointment and I'm now onto weekly appointments which is a bit Shock

All is well with baby and me, he's 1/5 engaged, back to my front right... (anybody know why baby back to the front left is considered more desirable? I forgot to ask).

And she thinks the sore bit on the front of my bump where he pushes out is him pushing on his placenta and it's the placenta join that's hurting me.

jennimoo · 19/08/2013 14:45

I think left is preferable as they are supposed to only twist one way and it means a quarter turn rather than a three quarter one one you're in labour to get to the 'popping out' position. I could be wrong on that but that's what I remember from my NCT class 3y ago!

I'm pretty sure mines on the right and that DD was too. I get too much pain to sleep for long on my left so always wake up with the whole baby sticking out my right side!

fl0b0t · 19/08/2013 15:03

madoodle sounds very painful! :-S

How is everyone sleeping? I'm finding it really hard at the moment. Doesn't matter how tired, I have heartburn and indigestion and can't sleep til late. Then with carpal tunnel my hands really hurt when I wake up and I don 't sleep very well. But now I'm feeling sleepy in the afternoon and I don't know whether I should nap or not!

Manoodle I think I've had baby pressing on a nerve sometimes. Occasionally really quick terrible pain in my leg, have to take all weight off it. Usually passes quickly, but horrible!

lotsa my changing bag isn't being used as a changing bag, I just used it to put all of the baby clothes and baby related stuff in to keep it separate from my stuff.. and I think on formula if BF doesn't work/go well the hospital usually provides formula.

I too had baby with back on the right at last appointment, and has been for weeks and weeks, despite my best efforts. Asked mw and she said not to worry because they move a lot during labour apparently.

Are weekly appointments usual by now? I had a 38w but no one is interested in seeing me again until 40w. Feeling neglected Smile.

Have just had a general grooming and hair removal session, just in case. Was not easy, but am feeling much better and very pleased with myself.

If baby is late though will curse and have to do it all again! Also braved the setting up of the bloody baby monitor (have one of those paranoid and unnecessary movement sensing ones) which I've been putting off for literally months.

badguider · 19/08/2013 15:28

Does that mean he's going to go back to back?

As his head is well engaged and there's an anterior placenta in there too I can't see him turning now till labour...

fl0b0t · 19/08/2013 15:40

moonster we have an angelcare as MIL bought it for us and a couple of people guilted us into getting it! I wasn't really too fussed but was told how invaluable it was..........

flo I have the same, I wake up every morning with an ache in my middle finger on my right hand. It goes away within about an hour but it is weird.

Could someone please remind me of why we're not allowed to sleep on our right side, I woke up this morning on my right side and had a massive pain in my side, almost like a head putting pressure on me. Is it dangerous for me or the baby to sleep on the right?

Has anyone else got an unquenchable thirst, I could drink litres of water, but then suffer later in the evening when I wake 10 times a night to pee! Ugh! Its a vicious circle!!

LotsaTuddles · 19/08/2013 16:05

Thanks Mooster.

I have a normal baby monitor oh dear, I'm a bad mother already

But it does play lullabys and tell me the temperature of baby's room.

It's a Motorola something or other

LotsaTuddles · 19/08/2013 16:08

I'm not sure why we can't sleep on our right, but I have to admit that I do sometimes.

My baby has decided that it really doesn't like me laying down. Can't lay on my back, as even I know that we're not supposed to - it's uncomfortable anyway. If I lay on my side, the baby pushes out on the side that I'm laying (so, towards the mattress iyswim) which really quite hurts and then if I turn over it does it in the other side too. So I just sleep however the baby deems that I'm allowed Grin

badguider · 19/08/2013 16:19

Your inferior vena cava runs up your right side under your uterus - this is the vein that carries the blood from the lower half of your body back to your heart, sleeping on your right can put pressure on it and make you feel faint or uncomfortable... you would generally wake up if this happens.

EmmaDee · 19/08/2013 16:19

oh, we're not allowed to sleep on our backs either?!!!! I have been doing that too!

jennimoo · 19/08/2013 16:51

I sleep on my right, its too painful on the left. It's nothing to worry about! I also end up on my back for the last hour or so usually. Your body will tell you if there's a problem IMO.

And IIRC they can twist right round in labour, no reason to think it'll be back to back.

LotsaTuddles · 19/08/2013 16:53

Wasn't sure why we can't sleep on right, but our backs is because the baby then puts pressure on the spine and the sciatic nerve (I think)

fl0b0t · 19/08/2013 17:06

lotsa- I have exactly that too. Baby kicks on whichever side i lie on which feels horrible. Sometimes when I lie on my right i wake up feeling all fuzzy and faint and sometimes I don't and I'm desperately uncomfy on my back too!

emmadee my hands kill me at the moment. Mine started with pins and needles when I woke up and now my hands are useless for about 10-15 minutes in the morning. I can't bend at the middle knuckle on any of my fingers as they're stiff as anything and hurt. I've just had a little nap in the garden and my hands are back to useless again!

OP posts:
RunningBear78 · 19/08/2013 17:20

I can only lie on the side the baby isn't, he doesn't like being squashed against the bed and wriggles till I turn over. Until a few weeks ago lying on my back was super comfy, but not ant more Sad

Had my nct antenatal classes over the weekend. Really good bunch of people too which always helps. Found it very informative/reassuring. She did a great job at passing on information without being at all preachy, but did highlight really well how much medical intervention gets done without proper consent, just due to hospital 'policy' or out of habit for no good reason. She really did highlight that birth partners should question everything being done if you aren't clear about what is it, what it is for, etc, especially if you are after a reasonably unmedicalised birth.

She also showed us an amazing video about a home birth (which left all the girls in tears) so ill hunt it down and share it! It will make you sooooo excited :)

We also did some belly dancing ...think it brought on some Braxton hicks! Quite alarming, but quite good fun ...and apparently good to do in labour. Must get myself a coin skirt for full terror impact at the local hospital Grin

36+1 ...less than 4 weeks to go eeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkk!!!!

CharlW1 · 19/08/2013 17:24

Flip I'm really excited but nervous about being induced next week - definitely nervous as I am a real worrier about everything but I have to be positive - plus the consultant said that in the consultant led unit that it's constant monitoring so they'll act quickly if they need to. I'm glad I don't have to wait till full term though.

Flo I have exactly the same thing in my hands. I can't close or bend my fingers for at least 10 minutes after I have woken up (regardless of whether it is a daytime nap or after a nights sleep) putting them under cold water helps.

GirlWithTheYellowHat · 19/08/2013 17:44

Oh my goodness, I just had an extremely sore tightening pain over the top of my bump. Its now really really tender!!

Kittenkatzen · 19/08/2013 17:58

derpess whatever you did earlier your profile is working now - that photo is THE most adorable thing I've ever seen! Your twins are gorgeous!!

On the baby bag front, I think I have about 6 changes of clothes in a mixture of newborn and up to 1 month sizes, simply because I couldn't decide which were my favourites and which to leave behind Blush. I have packed a separate change bag but mainly only because I couldn't cope with nappies and change stuff being mixed up with clothes and blankets!

tuddles I'm planning to bf but have packed two emergency bottles of the ready made formula just in case. Although you've just reminded me that I haven't actually packed anything for baby to drink them out of should the need arise...ooops. Although I can't cart a steriliser with me so how does that work? Anyone?!

JammyTummy · 19/08/2013 18:03

I have had an awful time today trying to breathe properly- seriously struggling to get a full breath and it is really really uncomfortable. I've been in all positions and now walking and still no improvement. Wondering if baby has moved way back up maybe. Will try bouncing on a ball later see if it helps.

We've got the motion sensor monitor too, still trying to come to grips with it. We've had it out before and set it up and stuff but I want to be really-really-really familiar with all the functions and icons before I use it. Also going to cut out a square out of an old place mat to put the pad on to.

I generally find sleep so uncomfortable these days I go to sleep on whatever is most comfortable at the time. I do agree that if your body was in trouble it wouldn't let you sleep through!

JammyTummy · 19/08/2013 18:12

Yet at the same time I also feel like I'm getting squeezed at the other end too- I feel like a stinky little gas bomb Blush.... Today is not a good day.

Readytosettle · 19/08/2013 18:24

running it was exactly that anti-nhs synicism that I don't like from our Nct tutor...I appreciate the need to be informed so that we can make the right decisions etc, but should we really be questioning every bit of advice that a medical professional gives us?? I feel they should give the nhs a little more credit...they've all had years more training than an Nct instructor!

frogchops · 19/08/2013 18:24

Whoever said theyve packed formula incase bf doesn't go well.....which one have u chosen? I looked at them all in boots like I hadn't got a clue (which I haven't!) and what do we take them to have it from? I'm thinking the hospital might provide, no? I've also heard that some come in disposable bottles anyway? Confused
Have finally bought a nightie to give birth in but must remember to pack pjs for after the event too.

Readytosettle · 19/08/2013 18:36

I was told that if you plan to formula feed you have to take everything with you, but if you plan to bf & have problems then the hospital will provide...

RunningBear78 · 19/08/2013 18:52

ready there was nothing anti NHS at all from the teacher, in fact she was very complementary of all our local services, she just wanted to highlight for those who were keen to have minimum intervention that often midwives don't phrase thier 'requests for consent' very well, and that some things may be done/given that seem like they are necessary when in fact there isn't an obvious or good reason for the action-like quick cord clamping, vitamin k injections in new borns, etc.

ouchy hands sound painful, so sorry for you guys!

not enjoying my return to constipation, feel quite full of baby thank you...
