Starting yet another thread as us chatterboxes have filled up 2 already!

Jucy, I'm so sorry to hear your news. Big hugs, wish there was something more I could say. Flowers

Frouby, if you're feeling crap just fuck the housework off, I do! It'll keep.

I'm scared and excited in equal measures about the scan on Friday. Looking forward to seeing bean and being able to get on with things. But obviously scared of getting bad news like Jucy... 2 days, 1 hour and 50 minutes to go!

My friend has offered to be a birthing partner too. I may well take her up on it, I suspect she'll be more help than OH. And as I'm planning on having a home water birth and OH has already invited his bloody mum (!) think it'll be good to have a friend there. I'm not private at all, have zero issues with people seeing me naked (as my neighbours will tell you) and she's seen me throw up enough times from our party days (though never shit myself to be fair) that I'm not too fussed about that.

Hi guys.

I'm at work, so please excuse that I haven't read/responded to other posts. Just need some advice.

My deputy head teacher has just told me that a teaching assistant I work quite closely with has got shingles. She said she had to let me know because of risks to pregnant women. What should I do? Phone midwife? go to dr? nothing?

Advice would be great! Really worrying about it.

Thanks Smile

froubylou · 27/06/2013 11:13

Gannet, phone your GP hun and ask for some advice. I wouldn't panic but would definatly get some advice and reassurance.

School sports day this afternoon for DD. Hate them lol. Usually the kids are split into 4 teams over their keystage and a series of games are done together. The team who scores the most points be completing the most games wins.

Waste of bloody time if you ask me lol. The kids aren't competing against each other as each team does the different tasks at different times. They learn nothing about winning or loosing and the sporty kids don't get their moment to 'shine' whilst the academic kids don't learn about not being the best at everything school related. DD is very academic and needs to learn to loose sometimes as shes uber competative.

Was going to do the ironing which is halfway up the wall but really CBA. Going to pick out the things we need for the weekend (pony show) and do those I think then I can leave the rest for next week.

And I'm hungry and cant decide what to have. Sigh. Want something nice but I have a choice of beans on toast, cheese on toast, a cheese sarnie or some soup that is currently in freezer and will take ages to defrost enough to cook.

MrsShrubs · 27/06/2013 11:24

Gannet www.nhs.uk/chq/pages/1110.aspx?categoryid=54&subcategoryid=137 just been having this conversation as my office managers mum has it and looking into whether it can be passed along or not!

QueenofWhispers · 27/06/2013 11:34

Had some terrible dreams last night and as a result have made DH stay at home and finish some of the work he's been putting off for two years. (Very important work that could land us in serious trouble if not done).

I cannot believed he stayed to do as I've asked.

NomDeClavier · 27/06/2013 12:17

Wrote a post and it was eaten and now in a rush so just posting for frouby and will come back later.

Have you contacted the birth crisi network? They are really, really helpful - they don't offer advice but they listen and understand.

froubylou · 27/06/2013 12:32

LOL Nom, I don't think they would be interested in whether my soup will defrost in time for sports day. Gannet will appreciate your advice though. xx

weechops · 27/06/2013 14:00

Hey taking :) I'm sitting in the waiting room at the mo for my 16 week appointment. Kids are being very well behaved (shock) and are excited to hear heartbeat :) will let you know how it goes when I get out.

weechops · 27/06/2013 14:58

Yay got to hear the heartbeat :) All is fine, I don't have to go back til I'm 28 weeks. Which seems a hell of a long way off. But I think it's because I have to see the consultant at 24 weeks because of previous C-section. Will he actually do anything though? Or just agree with me that I can have a vbcac :) 3 weeks until 20 week scan can't wait!

MrsShrubs · 27/06/2013 15:22

Glad everything's ok weechops

Completely off topic so I apologise but still kind of baby related, it's my step-nephews christening in a few weeks time and trying to think of a a good gift idea - does anyone have any ideas or your children got given something that was really thoughtful or different to the money boxes and photoalbums that are given? Would very much appreciate ideas Grin

NomDeClavier · 27/06/2013 15:36

Sorry it was actually feather that was for! I was sympathising with your school sports day blues, though frouby. I fecking hated them when I was competing, hated them as a teacher and will probably hate them as a parent.

Gosh it's hard to keep track when you're in a rush!

Roselau · 27/06/2013 16:48

weechops lucky you! i still have to wait two weeks for the MW appointment....

ok so i have to go get some maternity clothes. I still fit in everything but i can feel it getting tighter, and i'm scared next week I can't fit in anything and i wont have time to go shopping and we're away at a wedding the following weekend.

I know H&M, topshop, etc all have maternity ranges. But does anyone know if it's only their shops on oxford / regent's street that carry them? i really don't want to go there!!! I live close to the City, does anyone knows if any of the shops at One New Change carry maternity (H&M and topshop there?). I wish Karen Millen and LK Bennett did... any idea id HoF in the City does?

TakingTheStairs · 27/06/2013 17:05

weechops glad to hear everything was good. Were your children excited at the heartbeat? Yikes, our 20 wks scans are just around the corner aren't they!

MrsShrubs ooh I'm glad you brought this up. I've been thinking about this for a christening I have coming up
For another friend, I bought her child the complete collection of Beatrix Potter stories and a little pram clip on book so that he could have something for now IYKWIM. Woudl that help your ideas?

Can I ask for your thoughts for the other christening I have coming up. My lovely friend is having two of her children christened together. I have already bought the children books and toys on previous occassions. I'm not a god-parent so don't want to get silver. My friend is very good on manners and always sends lovely thank you notes and cards for any occasion. What would you think of personalised stationary for her children with their names on their own sets, so that she has their own stationary for thank you notes? Something like this And a little toy for each child too?
I thought it was something different but nice, but it might be rubbish??

Futterby · 27/06/2013 17:12

Congrats weechops!

Roselau I got some awesome stuff off ebay, total bargain!

Gannetgob · 27/06/2013 17:42

Thanks - I phoned midwife and she said there's nothing to worry about with shingles as long as you've already had chickenpox. So that's put my mind at ease.

I am with those who said they hate sports day. A day isn't enough at my school - we have just had sports week! It has been exhausting. Really awful. Horrible teenagers!

I'm looking forward to my 20 week scan. It's still over a month away though! 16 week mw appointment next week though. :) glad yours went well weechops.

I'm glad you've brought christenings up too, mrs shrubs - I need ideas too! Your idea sounds lovely, taking!

I've been really hormonal today. Cried at work - twice! That was before half 10! Although maybe I should blame nasty bitch teacher checking up on me because she has turned into some mini hitler rather than my hormones!

Can't wait to go to bed tonight!

Featherbag · 27/06/2013 17:50

Thanks Nom, I'll wait and see what my MW comes up with first but will definitely give them a ring if she's not able to help.

Got loads of maternity clothes today - H&M have a sale on! Got 2 pairs of over-bump trousers £10 each instead of £25, and a lovely shirt and t-shirt, cost £32 for the lot! I also got 2 dresses from New Look, one floral strapless maxi and a lovely knee length dress. And some shoes and underwear, but not because I needed them, managed to persuade myself the other stuff was all necessary so this was my treat to myself! Got DS some toys in the Mothercare sale too, couldn't help myself at half price!

QueenofWhispers · 27/06/2013 18:10

Hello Ladies,

I hate to be the resident drama queen; but I feel like I've found myself in another pickle.

So last week I had an appointment with my consultant and everything was fine until she asked the midwife to take my blood pressure. My first DS was delivered at 37 weeks via c-section because of pre-eclampsia; now this midwife could not for the life of her take my bp. She changed the cuff to different sizes; asked a few other nurses/midwives, she turned the machines off and on, she used 7 different machines and then eventually took me to the Labor and delivery ward to see if someone else would take it. Eventually, a more experience midwife came along and took it in 45 seconds, but the whole ordeal really upset me as it took a full 30 minutes with the same midwife...the problem is that I'm a very polite person so I didn't complain but it is causing me some anxiety. I really have been trying to forget it, but I think the pressure is building too high and I need to feel confident in the staff that is around me. Pre-eclampsia can KILL women and their children; I'm at risk again and I just don't want to take the risk. I really don't want to be somewhere a majority of the midwives/nurses can't take my blood pressure.

Would it be wrong of me to switch hospitals and consultants?

Featherbag · 27/06/2013 18:52

Queen, did they use an automatic machine or stethoscope and sphyg? I'd worry if they weren't competent at measuring a BP manually, but I'd worry a hell of a lot more if they'd given up and not done it. You're bound to be anxious because of your history, but try not to dwell too much or it'll put your BP up!

inkymomma · 27/06/2013 20:02

Had my 16 week appointment yesterday (at 15+1) got to hear figgys heartbeat. 135bpm. Been referred to the vbac clinic and been put as high risk. 20 week scan on the 30th July. Cannot wait to see if its a boy or a girl. It's coming around fast now isn't it ladies?

Alyssa1978 · 27/06/2013 20:14

Hi everyone,

Dp being a complete prick these last 2 days, snapping at me for no reason and now he's just watched me carry a basket of laundry up the stairs with 4 loads in it (very heavy) and now muttered that he's going out and he's gone for a run and not even bothered saying night to ds1 thus leaving me in tears.
At the minute I just wish he'd leave, just don't get the feeling he cares anymore.
Sorry ladies I just needed to vent Sad

Roselau · 27/06/2013 20:49

futterby thanks for the suggestion. maybe a silly question, but how do you know what your size is when you order stuff online? I've been really reluctant to do it because since my body has changed I really don't know what will fit and what wont...

queen that would scare me too. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for another consultant if you dont trust her. this is already a stressful experience so you should feel comfortable with the people taking care of you, else it just adds to the stress (and stress increase BP, no?)

alyssa sorry you're having a rough day :(

mumoftwoboysS · 27/06/2013 21:34

abc I'd be up for selling stuff! Tho like you, my baking skills need some work- I had he idea of making and selling cupcakes not long ago till I realised how bloody stressful it is and not at all the creative, therapeutic experience I thought it'd be!

Exciting that some of you have got to hear the heartbeat @ 16 wk apt. I really hope my mw agrees to do it. Haven't felt much at all and I'm starting to think something might be wrong again..

queen I can't believe they couldn't do your bp?! I not surprised you're feeling anxious about it. I agree with Roselau, if it makes you less anxious then it's worth seeing if you can see someone else- someone you have some faith and confidence in!

QueenofWhispers · 27/06/2013 21:43

It wasn't the Dr's fault, just who her staff are. The dr gets called in last after the whole team decides if I'm in labour/have problems.

The machine they used was one that automatically inflates the cuff, but then they need to use the stethoscope to hear the pulse...but then she did have the option to just inflate it manually; I even offered to do it for her.

MildredH · 28/06/2013 01:41

I'm 18 weeks on Saturday Pistachio.. So in theory could be feeling movement. Am still a little unconvinced but enjoying lying quietly in bed at night trying to!

A midwife friend brought a Doppler home last night and we popped over for her to check fetal heart beat. Lovely reassurance and probably a good compromise for me as I decided getting my own Doppler would lead to anxiety.

Sorry for anyone having a rough time at work. As someone pointed out- we're roughly half way to mat leave Smile. The way I feel at the moment I'd like to go at the earliest opportunity. Realistically thinking 34 wks though, as my job is very physically demanding and on my feet for long hours.. Has anyone else thought about when they'd go off?

QueenofWhispers · 28/06/2013 06:29

I wont be able to take mat leave. I may anyway but then my business will die.

Dasie · 28/06/2013 09:06

Mildred I'm 18 weeks tomoro too and have been feeling teeny movements for about 2 weeks now. Started off with little 'pops' like a gas bubble but now has developed into much more definate kicks. I seem to feel it more when I put a little pressure on my tummy for example laying flat and laying my hands on my baby lump or when my trousers are a little tight round the middle.

Queen I think I would be a little bit worried if someone couldn't read my BP after a second attempt. I'm a nurse and regularly take BP's and know that sometimes you do need a second attempt but to not be able to get it at all would have me a little concerned too!
