You lot are still making me
a lot, esp with your rebellious eating habits.
I think it's a v fair point that you don't actually get told any of this until the end of the first trimester ish (booking in appointment).
It's pretty hypocritical of the NHS to obsess over healthy eating/living and have all these guidelines, but then not bother to actually see pregnant women until nearly the end of the first and most risky trimester! I don't understand it, tbh, but I suspect it's a 'lack of resources' issue - my GP gave me no advice, no handouts, nothing except the referral, and I won't see anyone until nearly 11 weeks, by which time if I hadn't eaten carefully, taken folic acid etc, if those things were going to cause a problem, it would already be caused! Yes, I am intelligent enough to read up, and find out for myself. But there are plenty of women who can't read English well enough, or who don't understand the implications, or who don't have internet access, and they are the ones at risk.
Why don't you get a midwife appointment as soon as you find out? I know why, really, it's their cold 'oh well, you might not make it to the end of the first trimester, let's not bother' attitude, but that sucks. I'm hoping my midwife will prove to be ace, but right now, I feel as if there is no support offered by the NHS at all. I have no number to call (other than GP/101/999) if there's a problem, and I had to find the NHS baby emails myself, they weren't suggested by my doctor. I don't even have a list of local EPUs. Not that I can't find all this stuff - I can, and have, but I think it should be offered.
Rant over. I might have a runny egg for tea. Mmmmmmmmmmmm.
