I'm lucky to commute out from the city centre (of Manchester) for work so my trams are relatively uncrowded, but the one hour commute is not fun. Sometimes I wish I had more professionals on my commute because it's mostly schoolkids who are just as inconsiderate, but louder. There's a group of teenagers shouting at each other right now.

Are baby on board badges a London thing? Where do you get them from?

pinkbuttons · 21/05/2013 18:13

sorry to hear about nightmare commutes. You all definitely have my sympathy. I currently walk half an hr each way to drop Ds off and get to work and thats exhausting me at the moment!
My DH currently commutes 90 minutes each way and hardly sees DS which is one of the reasons were moving soon. Its so hard to get a good balance but Im looking forward to seeing more of him and the schools are much better where were moving (seems crazy to be thinking about that when DS is only 2)
Looking forward to hearing scan news from today, hope all is ok.

cazboldy · 21/05/2013 18:39

All good here Smile perfect and spot on for dates. We had a trainee sonographer, (a man) who was ,lovely! And then the lady had to check all his measurements and everything so we were in there about 40 mins, and looked at everything very thoroughly, but baby was very uncooperative, and had it's legs crossed with the cord down between them!

However, she said if she had to put money on it she would say it's a girl!!!!!!!! Shock which has surprised me! Grin she said they are always less definite with girls as it's more a case of not seeing something, rather than it not being there iykwim.

Would even things up - 3 of each Grin

i couldn't imagine living in a big village with lots of neighbours, let alone a town/city! Nightmare!

Dh has to walk across the road for wotk and that's it! School and shop a 5 min drive. Nearest big shops are in Norwich which is about 25 mins away.

Flyer747 · 21/05/2013 18:39

Do I find out the sex or not??? I was all for a surprise now I really really want to know, but I still kinda want a surprise! My scan is on Thursday....thoughts October bus ladies?

Flyer747 · 21/05/2013 18:40

Congrats Caz x

Natalieand · 21/05/2013 18:46

I say do it flyer but them I'm biased cos I actually paid £80 to go and find out! Lol

pinkbuttons · 21/05/2013 18:58

Congratulations caz exciting!! Thats what sonographer told me at our 16 week scan about girls, thankfully at 20 week one she was wriggling around so they got a good look in different positions.
flyer i say go for it too but only cs I have with both of mine Smile think it has to be your decision but my reasoning was that I thought DS was a girl and was glad we found out he wasnt as it meant I could bond with him before he was here and not be shocked or dissappointed for a second when he was born. Also love to be able to refer to baby as her rather than it. but am sure someone will come on with counter arguments soon Grin

Slowjogs · 21/05/2013 19:00

ananikifo you can get baby on board badges from tube stations, some national rail stations or for about £1.50 on eBay. I feel really self-conscious when I wear mine but it's nice to have it in case I need it!
flyer do it! It'll be a great surprise whenever you find out. Although I'm biased as I can't imagine waiting, I'm far too impatient Blush Will hopefully find out next wednesday which still seems ages away.

Natalieand · 21/05/2013 19:00

I have days now when I still struggle to come to terms with the idea I'm having a boy so I'm glad I found out at 16 weeks cos my worry would be if I had waited until the birth and they had said he was a boy I may have felt under whelmed

Smitten1981 · 21/05/2013 19:01

To be honest I wish I hadn't found out the sex because I was and still am a little disappointed. I think if I found out on the big day I wouldn't be so disappointed because I'd be so glad it was finally all over and they were here.

I was so keen to find out, but I don't think I would next time.

Smitten1981 · 21/05/2013 19:04

Natalie, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I feel so bad about it, but I was so sure I was having a girl.

I kind of feel like the baby I was imagining has gone and I feel a bit sad about it. I know how ridiculous that sounds. Of course I am very happy to be having a baby and that so far everything looks like it is ok.

FeministInTraining · 21/05/2013 19:12

Am one of the London commuters... 90mins each way as I commute in and back out again. Journey in isn't too bad as I can time it so I get on emptier trains but coming home isn't as good, often have to wait a few stops for someone to get off- and if that doesn't happen by a certain station there's no hope! Luckily there are still some nice people left on London transport but I did have a man look at me and them quickly look back down again- I really wanted to laugh at him! I've asked for a seat once but don't like doing it. Maybe when I'm mahoosive lol.

The badges are a London Underground thing but as we can see they don't always work. Don't get rid of yours just yet Claphammama not everyone is horrible.

Our reason for not finding out is for the 'its a boy/girl!' surprise thing- otherwise i might just say 'I know'! Sounds silly, but I love surprises, don't like knowing what I'm getting for Christmas or birthday presents either! The other reason is that I don't like the idea that you need to know the gender to be able to bond- for me I'm bonding with my baby, a gender gender stereotype won't tell me anything more about their personality or the type of baby they will be. Hope that doesn't offend anyone, it's a very individual decision and it's each to their own!

Natalieand · 21/05/2013 19:20

smitten I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling like it to. I cried on and off for a cpl of days after and thought I had been coming round to the idea until the midwife asked how the private scan went I started telling her we was having a boy then spent 10 minutes crying about it she was so understanding gave me a cuddle held my hand etc. I think the main reason I get upset is so I feel so guilty for feeling disappointed its not a girl and I guess a small part of me is hoping that at my anomaly scan on Friday they will be like ohhhh no they got it so wrong it's a girl!! even tho I done a bootsale at the weekend and sold all my pink stuff lol

I've got 20 weeks and 6 days to get used to the idea, I said to the midwife I was worried I wouldn't bond when he's born because of how I feel now she said not to worry about that for now and see how I feel nearer the time

Natalieand · 21/05/2013 19:22

Have u thought of any names smitten? I kept imagining this baby brig called Scarlette and having Scarlette and honey (dd's name) now I'm having trouble getting excited about boys names

OrangeBlossom2 · 21/05/2013 19:26

Moon, no not talked to union. Had no time. We are interviewing at school and I was told yesterday at 5 that I had a candidate being observed observing me today so I wanted to get my books all up to date and make sure everything was ready so stayed up late doing that. I will look into it at half term. Although mainly I think I will just keep my head down until I can leave. Two people at school told me they have got new jobs today and another two are looking...

Whoever asked if veg growing is too middle aged noo! Well maybe but I don't care. Our garden is small but we grow lots on our little veg patch and in various containers and I dug up lots of modern grassy type things to grow gooseberries, red currants, raspberries and apples and edible flowers in the borders. Looking forward to gardening with the baby when it is older.

DH working in Paris tonight so contemplating what to make for dinner for one.

Smitten1981 · 21/05/2013 19:33

Natalie - I think we have Seth or Felix so far, I can't find any others that I like and I've been looking for days. I was nearly in tears yesterday because I couldn't find any more that I liked. I'm really hoping this is all pregnancy hormones.

I keep saying the same thing about the 20 week scan "maybe they will see its a girl and the other place got it wrong".

Maybe next time round I'll get to use Darcy!

MrsO27 · 21/05/2013 19:42

Lots of chat today, wow! It's so nice when someone helps you, holds a door open or gives up a seat. Just doesn't happen that often unfortunately.
bree I also live in an area where they don't tell you the sex. We're definitely not going to find out (unless its really obvious and we see it on the scan ourselves!). I quite like the excitement of not knowing and everyone trying to guess. Maybe I'll be different if/when we have another, but this is our first so not too fussed what it is.
I get my MATB1 at my 24 week midwife appointment. That's when the HR folk at work are expecting it so think that's standard where I live.

roofio87 · 21/05/2013 19:56

I'm so glad we found out the sex, I can't imagine having anything but a little boy now. I think we're quite set on 'Hunter' for the first name. I know its not everyones taste but I love it!!

OrangeBlossom2 · 21/05/2013 20:12

Feeling really sick, shivery and got an upset tummy. Don't know if this is a new pregnancy joy or I am ill. Anyone else get this? going to bed to sleep it off.

Claphammama · 21/05/2013 20:16

congrats Caz!

pink buttons I went through exactly the same process! I was so convinced it was a little girl that I had a shock when they told me it was a boy. So it was good to have some time to get used to thinking about a little boy and get excited about it. I also really struggled with not knowing how to refer to it! I needed to know if it was a she or a he. As feminist says everyone is different but knowing the sex didn't ruin anything for me. Giving birth is such a momentous thing that it doesn't matter at all then.

Natalie and smitten honestly don't worry about things - once you have them in your arms, you will love them to bits and all that matters will be that it's your beautiful baby.

roxvox · 21/05/2013 22:08

flyer747 I am really pleased that we haven't found out the sex. I can completely understand why people would want to (I wanted to at first), but I now think that, unless you are hopeful for one sex or the other, then you don't need that time to adjust and it's quite exciting not knowing and having people speculate and wonder Smile

Sorry to hear about everyone's horrendous commutes. My drive to work takes about 30 minutes and is picturesque so I am quite fortunate.
I really struggle when I go to London (have only ever been 3 or 4 times in my life), but I hate it, it is too claustrophobic for me. I have a few friends who I grew up with who absolutely love living in London though and now cannot stand Cornwall when they go home for Christmas and can't wait to get back to London!

DH and I have next week off and we're going home to Cornwall. Absolutely cannot wait! Really hopeful for some decent weather, but the long range forecast isn't too great... Regardless though it will be some nice relaxing family time for us both.

roofio87 · 21/05/2013 22:24

for those not finding out the sex until the big day a lady I work with made sure the midwife left the job of making the "we have a little boy/girl" to her husband, she said It was amazing when he handed the baby over and told her, I think that's a lovely idea if u don't already know!!

roxvox · 21/05/2013 22:35

That's a lovely idea, thanks Roofio! I wouldn't have thought of that had you not said, but now I will definitely request it!

Flyer747 · 21/05/2013 22:38

Roxvox you've just helped me reach my decision and I'm not going to find out. I initially wanted a surprise and as your comment about favouring a particular gender makes sense, I don't care either way, both sexes have pros so we are happy with whatever we get!!! Thanks for your useful advice October Bus crew xx
