Welcome to thread number 7 (of many) of the October bus xxx

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Shirehobbit · 29/04/2013 14:10

What a waste of time and energy that appointment was; waited half an hour to be seen for 5 mins.
BP and urine only, when I asked about the doppler she was very dismissive, saying that she'd written on my notes it would only be BP and urine, they don't do dopplers. So disappointed.
She said she wouldn't look at the scan pic because you can't tell placenta position from a picture, so I'm no further forward in finding out if it's anterior or not so don't know if I should be feeling any flutters yet.
Oh and if my pain gets worse I should call triage.

I'm trying not to cry, but not really succeeding Sad

roxvox · 29/04/2013 14:15

Oh ShireHobbit that's rubbish. Sounds as though she was keen to process you as fast as possible. Do you think your appointment may have been right before her lunch break?! I had some pretty severe stomach cramps a couple of weeks ago (twice I struggled to get out of bed with them), and tried not to panic. When I next visited the MW she did a doppler and all was fine in there. I think mine came down to constipation (but the pain seemed worse than just that). Could your pain be anything like that?

Shirehobbit · 29/04/2013 14:18

Thanks, but I'm pretty ok digestion-wise at the moment (touches wood).

I just don't understand why some people are getting dopplers and some aren't. I really need some reassurance and there is no way we can afford another scan.

Claphammama · 29/04/2013 14:23

that's terrible shire, sounds like she just couldn't be bothered. They can be like this sometimes. Forgetting they are talking about our baby and it's a big deal for us!! I'm sure all will be good. Are you planning to ask for another appointment if you are worried? If yes, I would go for it and ask. As we talked before, sometimes NHS really has to be pushed to do their job properly!

Shirehobbit · 29/04/2013 14:31

But who would I call/go to?

I guess it's not like anything is pressingly wrong. The discomfort could just be growing pains.
I'm more cross at the doppler rudeness and the placenta confusion - I've just scoured my notes and there's no mention of it. Does anyone else have their placenta position recorded from the 12wk scan?
I just want to know so I don't become anxious if I can't feel movement.

HotSoupDumpling · 29/04/2013 14:34

Good good good luck soupqueen. Hope it's gone we'll so far crunchie - it's a bit like the first day in a new school, isn't it!

Umlauf, don't worry at all re Fb response. If I got 20 comments on anything I'd feel like little miss popular!

Shire, if you feel worried then you could perhaps ring midwife services and explain the background and say it is making you feel very anxious and affecting your enjoyment of the pregnancy... Sometimes you'll get someone sympathetic who will help, e.g. A midwife who understands that a stressed mother also affects baby development and bonding. It has worked for us.

HotSoupDumpling · 29/04/2013 14:35

Shire, not sure whether it's the same for you, but do you have a general midwife number to call on your pregnancy notes?

Claphammama · 29/04/2013 14:39

I guess you could call your surgery again, quote the symptoms and say you are very anxious so would love to see someone again as you can't sleep, eat, worry etc...? Perhaps not right now but in a week or so? I haven't used it yet myself but know from friends and colleagues that they react quite well to the whole anxiety / can't sleep pregnant woman talk.

I can't remember - are you on your first one shire? I'm on DC2 and told myself I won't worry if I don't feel movements until 18/19 weeks. I felt them around 18/19 weeks with DC1, know they tend to be earlier with DC2 but won't panic if it doesn't happen. I'm on holidays next week anyway so will have my 16 weeks appointment when I'm actually 17+2. Will try to force her to use doppler but no idea what they do here...

Claphammama · 29/04/2013 14:41

ps. and no, no idea where my placenta is!

Shirehobbit · 29/04/2013 14:43

I do, but they only have two people answering the phones. On the three occasions either I, or DH, have called, it's taken over 30 attempts and a minimum of three hours to get a response. And I don't think this warrants calling Triage, really.

I need to calm down a bit now - swinging from anxiety to righteous indignation is not good for the stress levels Wink

Shirehobbit · 29/04/2013 14:45

Yes - it's my first clapham after a long time trying, can you tell?!

Maybe I need to accept I am amongst the well majority (at last) and that no flapping from midwives means they expect that everything is progressing as it should.

Claphammama · 29/04/2013 14:52

haha, yes I can tell now :-) how exciting!!

And yes, they are usually all over you when things are wrong. So try to take it as a good sign. And please don't worry if you don't feel any movements - far too early for DC1! As I said earlier, it was about 19 weeks for me and some of my friends didn't feel anything until 21 / 22 weeks. I remember they were surprised I felt them so early. So too early to worry! :-)

Soupqueen · 29/04/2013 14:56

That's me home now, glad that's over!

MoN, if you're reading, it doesn't hurt. Uncomfortable but no more so than getting blood taken. I'm now on the sofa with my feet up and don't intend to move. Results by the end of the week, thats a phone call I'm not looking forward to receiving at work.

shire, that sounds like a terrible appointment!

Shirehobbit · 29/04/2013 14:57

Thanks lovely.
Going to take a calming walk, followed by a sneaky nap as work told me to take the whole afternoon. May as well make the most of it.
I hope your cold is getting better.

Shirehobbit · 29/04/2013 14:58

Xpost.
Fingers crossed soupqueen

cherrycherry41 · 29/04/2013 15:01

soup fingers crossed for you xxx

Smitten1981 · 29/04/2013 15:06

Soup can you take the time off work? I did that as I was a state when they called the first time.

The midwife that called with my results literally just went : "Hi, it's the screening midwife here. Your results are fine, nothing was picked up. I'll pop the letter in the post, bye."

I was like, "errr, no. Hang on a minute..." Make sure you ask any questions you might have a make a note of them to make sure you remember.

The woman was really rude and obviously just wanted to get me off the phone, it quite took me by surprise after all the worry that I'd had waiting for the results. When I said that I had been so worried she said "Why? Don't be silly" as if I was abnormal. Of course I was worried sick, stupid woman!

I think you need to be quite firm and bossy with these midwives as they forget that you're very concerned and you don't work with pregnany-related things day in day out.

Smitten1981 · 29/04/2013 15:07

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you soup and for you tomorrow MoN. Let's hope for some good luck all round.

Soupqueen · 29/04/2013 15:10

Unfortunately I can't take the time off work. My boss is lovely though and I'll be able to leave straight away if I need to.

I know what you mean about the midwives, I'll make sure to have thought of my questions in advance.

The good thing about going through this is that I saw the baby again, and the heartbeat. I'm 16weeks exactly and, as it's my first, no movements yet so it's good to know its still in there!

pinkbuttons · 29/04/2013 15:30

Glad amnio wasnt too bad soup will be keeping my fingers crossed for your results.

shire I just wanted to add that I didnt feel movements with DS until I was 24 weeks! I had an anterior placenta but was also running around and didnt really know what I was feeling for. Sorry your appt. was so frustrating, my midwife was like that in my last pregnancy, have been lucky this time round but it seems wrong that its luck of the draw when they are in a caring profession for people at one of the most worrying time of their lives. Hope your walk helped xx

Slippysnow · 29/04/2013 15:50

Wishing good results for everyone and exciting scans. I really want to post something about my pregnancy but things are going very smoothly (hope it stays that way) and no movements as of yet. 14+. 3 so still early days I don't even have a bump. Ah well can't complain. It seems so silly to be wishing my life away so am making a promise to myself to try and enjoy it and not let impatience dominate my life.

Thought of something I could share... We bought car seat new born and older baby maxi cosi cabriofix and pearl with a family fix base. Very very impressed with the easy installation it can be transferred to other cars, we had a major car crash in November (hit randomly by a drink driver) so we have really looked into this.

Also bought our Moses basket- we have a dog so are doing all we can to get him used to the changes. Any one else thinking about their dog and the baby?

Bought a gro egg so I'm more aware of room temp- I'm addicts to watching it now haha :)
Got a baby bjorn from eBay for £20 (used)

We also got bought a cotbed and matress

Can you tell this is my first :)

Soupqueen · 29/04/2013 15:54

No dog here, but a very spoiled cat.

Natalieand · 29/04/2013 16:03

Some good shopping there slippy Grin.

Soup glad amnio was ok, keep those feet up and we will all be keeping our fingers crossed for you. Good luck also for tomorrow MoN.

Shire your appointment sounds crap - it makes me so cross that some midwives have no empathy at all. And I hated all of that FTM stuff - ok, maybe I haven't done this before, but thats a reason to be more supportive, not dismissive and make me feel stupid! Grr - really indignant on your behalf! Don't worry about the no movement though - as lots of other have said it unusual to feel at 16 weeks esp on 1st - I didn't feel anything until 20 weeks, and then wasn't definite movement until about 21/22 weeks, and that was with a posterior placenta. Have you thought about buying your own doppler (think they are about 30 quid), or if you have an iphone download the stethoscope? They can be hit and miss so can stress people out, but I used the iphone all through my last pregnancy and could normally pick up the HB.

Slippysnow · 29/04/2013 16:13

Cats are amazingly crafty they slink in unnoticed you can hear our soppy dog a mile off. My best friend has a cat that loved beds and sleeping anywhere she wasn't meant to so was terrified of when the baby was born the cat sharing the cot and sleeping on their face!! But the cat has avoided the baby and cot so she's very impressed. The 6month baby on the other hand has started reaching and yanking the cat, gratitude for you
