Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
jemimahpuddleduck · 13/05/2013 12:33

I'm off to Turkey on Thurs flying with easyjet and they don't need a note until 28 weeks either although I an going to make sure my green notes are in my flight bag just in case.

Out of interest is anybody who is going to fly or has flown in pregnancy wearing flight socks? Mine have just arrived and they won't fit right over my calf... Are they supposed to?

badguider · 13/05/2013 12:37

I do wonder about the airlines saying they want a 'gp note' - my gp hasn't seen me since i got pregnant so would only be writing based on reading my notes which i'd have with me anyway. I don't think i'll be flying again now (and can totally get away with claiming to not even be 20 weeks right now) but i think the airlines are the ones in the wrong here trying to cover their asses - gps have much more important things to be doing! (NOT that that excuses your horrible gp taking it out on you ready Angry)

jennimoo · 13/05/2013 13:33

Ready - I'd write and complain!

I think it's a good plan to try and have a note / proof of how pg you are as there's always a chance they'll decide you look too pg and won't let you on the plane! I had one last time for a holiday at about 27 weeks and my (eccentric) GP was happy to do it but I did feel it was a waste of his time!

Readytosettle · 13/05/2013 13:42

I tried asking the midwife to do it last time I saw her but she told me it had to be the gp.....Just neglected to mention that I couldnt see just any old gp!!

I'm a bit annoyed with myself for getting upset instead of angry, but the receptionist did offer me an evening appointment for tomoro so maybe the emotional outburst helped get me some pity points! Maybe I should turn on the tears more often....

Kittenkatzen · 13/05/2013 13:59

Awww ready don't e annoyed with yourself - I'd have definitely done the same even without being upduffed! She sounds like a witch anyway Thanks

Anyone else suffering with back pain? For a few weeks now I've not been able to stand or walk for long periods of time (like over an hour or so), which i had assumed was pretty standard being as my bump has popped out now, but in the last couple of days I've been getting shooting pains down the right side of my back, almost in my bum - it's really painful and makes me gasp out loud (which is embarrassing on the train!) am wondering if i might have trapped a nerve or something. Anyone else?

RakeABedOfTyneFilth · 13/05/2013 14:04

Runningbear/badguider I have the BOBgear Ironman and it is great. DS will still fit it for ages yet - it takes up to 30kg - but you can't use it before five months as the seat doesn't have the right back support for littlies. It is also properly huge, most car boot sizes won't fit it easily, but it has quick release things to take the wheels off. We didn't have much of a problem with its size because I used it daily to walk to work so no need for car boot transfer (but on that point, Skoda Octavia is the way to go if you want people-carrier level of boot capacity without paying people carrier price or feeling like a minibus driver...!)

RakeABedOfTyneFilth · 13/05/2013 16:20

Had 24 week MW appointment today, all good. The doppler wasn't working very well, so she had to listen with the trumpet thingy first. Prodded around to find which way baby was lying, and managed to get me in a really painful spot at the top right of my bump. It felt like poking a very ripe bruise. Twice! Anyway, she found heartbeat at last and it was 140-145. I have anterior placenta too, but have been feeling loads of movements in the past couple of weeks - getting quite predictable like ten/twenty minutes after eating, or after I sit down on the tube and relax after my walk to the station. Nothing since the appointment though. Might have to eat some chocolate...

Didn't get weighed but did get my bump measured, spot on 25cm. I have ridiculously low blood pressure (99/58 today) which is quite normal for me, but she said next appointment at 28 weeks needs blood taken so to make sure I'd had lots to drink as it will help it not be a tedious slow trickle. I asked when we start talking about birth options, as I would like a home birth and it's already the choice ticked on the front of my notes, and she says at the 36 week appointment they do a sort of 'final booking in' and also someone comes to your home to check it's not a crack den see where you would put the birthing pool and the Entonox supply. They even provide a pool (allegedly, although I've heard sometimes they cut it a bit fine and it might not be there in time) but they "don't let you" give birth at home before 37 weeks.

Oh and she wrote a MATB1 form that states my earlier (scan) EDD not LMP, so I will have to declare Mat Leave from 28th Aug rather than (theoretically!) work up to the bitter end...! I will probably still have some work to do from home but whether I am officially on leave or not doesn't really matter. I have a very generous Mat Pay package so I want to maximise the value I am giving to work before disappearing for a while.

Creamtea1 · 13/05/2013 16:38

Anyone seen Triplerock around since she asked about UTIs and feeling poorly? Haven't seen her back so hope all is ok.

JammyTummy · 13/05/2013 17:08

Kitten I've got a bad back, and I do think it sounds like you've got a trapped nerve (I get that also- right at the very bottom tip of my spine, and it shoots down into my leg, but not in a sciatica kind of way). It comes and goes though, and helps if you give yourself a rest! Good excuse to sit on your bottom for a while!

Wondering if I could join you ladies? I'm due 29th August (DC1), so may be gatecrashing... I'm usually a lurker, but at 24+4 this morning had first leaking from nipples which freaked me out a bit. Decided I might need some moral support!

Kittenkatzen · 13/05/2013 18:17

Thanks jammy I shall use it to my advantage and keep my butt planted on the sofa then :) am going to go for a swim tonight, hopefully that might help a bit.

Welcome manya lots of moral support to be had here! no leaky nips for me just yet, although I have noticed little white spots which google reliably informs me is little plus on the end of the milk ducts, so maybe it won't be long! There's a link to our stats thread at the top of this one if you wanted to add your details Smile

JammyTummy · 13/05/2013 18:45

Question to those who've had a C-Section before: did you have it under local or general anasthetic? I've never thought about this before until something cropped up in the 'birth plan' section in my preg app. Do you generally stay awake for a c section?
Also, episiotomy, holy guacamole- I didn't know what it was so I typed it into google and clicked on the Wikipedia link. Have a look at the diagram description it gives you! I literally almost cried...

OP posts:
JammyTummy · 13/05/2013 18:49

Oh, and, one more question- did everyone have a vitamin K shot?

OP posts:
HettySunshine · 13/05/2013 18:52

Holy crap! I am NOT having one of those! They wouldn't really use scissors would they??!!

RakeABedOfTyneFilth · 13/05/2013 19:12

By the time it gets to that stage, you really don't feel an episiotomy...! I had on my birth plan something like "prefer episiotomy to tearing, but only if necessary". They numb it first I think with a little local anaesthetic wipe like when you have blood taken. These are all things to ask your MW, or if you do a tour of the maternity ward.

TMI alert
Thing is, you can't control where a tear goes, if they cut a bit first it reduces the likelihood of tearing in a bad direction (i.e. straight towards your bum-hole).

jennimoo · 13/05/2013 19:14

I think a cs is generally under a local anaesthetic but I expect there are certain times you would have a general but can't think what they might be.

I didn't have an episiotomy but I think it's best not to google and if it was a good idea the MW will tell you and I don't think you'd be in a position to be too worried! I think some evidence shows a snip heals better than a tear but best not to dwell on it.

I can't remember anything about the vit k shot so hoping someone else can answer that!

Mooster1709 · 13/05/2013 20:36

Might be of interest on episiotomies - 2 of my friends are obstetricians and both of them opted for episiotomies for their births and said they would again... I guessed they'd seen a lot more births than me so am convinced. As Rake said - there's some control at least so you're not going to end up doubly incontinent (I have a deep fear of this)

TripleRock · 13/05/2013 20:40

Thanks for asking after me Creamtea I'm feeling much better, and urine sample done today was clear of protein. So whatever was brewing has sorted itself thankfully.

Hope everyone else is feeling ok.

Csections are usually done under spinal anasthestic. My emcs was and would be again if I opt for planned this time. Can be done under general, usually only if it's such an emergency that there's no time for a spinal I believe.

Vit K injection, DD had it. You can opt for 3 spaced oral doses instead if you want to I think. I opted for the injection in the end because I didn't want to risk DD not being 'fully dosed up' on the car journey home. Although I take these things with a bit more of a pinch of salt nowadays so might make a different decision this time.

Readytosettle · 13/05/2013 20:56

A colleague today was recounting the story of her 'third degree tears' today....so bad she had to go into surgery post delivery....TMI!

Kittenkatzen · 13/05/2013 21:56

Anyone know what the vit k injection is actually for? What does it protect against/do??

As for all the talk of snipping, tearing and double incontinence lalalalalalala I'm not listening!! ShockGrin

juniper9 · 13/05/2013 22:05

I was reading my dp's obstetrics text book and the episiotomy page was the only section that made me feel faint! I counted even bear to look at the picture without it making my knees go weak.

herewego2 · 13/05/2013 22:15

lalalalalalalal here too kittenkatzen! Really staring to feel full of baby here, huffing and puffing if I have to pick anything up off the floor... sounds like I'm 120 years old.
Flo - back to doing ridiculous dancing, I dug out "bringing sexy back" by Justin Timberlake and danced round my lounge.... made myself laugh anyway with my huge bump and inappropriate moves....

fl0b0t · 13/05/2013 22:19

:) Enjoyed catching up today (still thoroughly whacked from 3 part wedding- three nights of getting to get after 1:30am, and saturday was almost 3am). Thank goodness I'm off this week, and have a 6 month old neice (in law) visiting. She is all smiles and gorgeousnes! :)
(see here for cuddles fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/971672_10152804070960510_706180130_n.jpg)

Still wearing my old knickers... is that bad? I mean, about 60% of my pubic area and 80% of my bumcrack is covered..... :-S

KamikazeeKid · 13/05/2013 22:20

C sections are usually done whilst you are awake. Friends who have had
General anaesthetic generally had major things go wrong so very rare.

On the airline front...the ok to fly note...its not really a superfluous airline request, its something you'd rely on for insurance if things went wrong. Its a valid requirement in my eyes so you can guess my industry Wink I can see both sides of the argument knowing what can happen - I back any airline that asks for one. - Its responsible :-) also there are situations where a Dr wouldn't issue a fit to fly.

fl0b0t · 13/05/2013 22:21

herewego that sounds ace! I didn't get to dance much at the weddings (everything happened really late) but managed a few embarrassing crotch thrusting moves :-D
