Oh vix I am sorry to hear that. Take care of yourself and I too hope you make it on another bus soon. You are always welcome back on here whenever you want to post.

getoffthecoffeetable · 27/03/2013 19:40

vix so sorry.

Still pretty symptomless today except for DH driving round the multi storey. I had to hang my head out of the window like a dog. Didn't vom but it was so close!

I def agree with swaddling and then onto grobags when the baby gets bigger. DS would jolt himself awake and it scared him so the swaddling was brilliant for him.

Have looked at the baby hammock, I'd never seen one if those before. How old can the baby stay in it for and is the transition to a bed really difficult?

getoffthecoffeetable · 27/03/2013 19:41

Also, yes please to the pattern link for the sling. Thank you

Saundy · 27/03/2013 19:50

Do baby's arms not get cold with the gro bags?

Does swaddling work well with the baby hammock? It's was the natures best ones I was looking at. You can still get new mattresses on their site & eBay seems to have the actual hammocks come up quite frequently.

So early to be thinking about all this!

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 27/03/2013 19:59

William, Vix and Berry - sorry to hear your news and fingers crossed for you. Vix, definitely push for a scan, they can do them earlier than that, and you want the peace of mind. So sorry that you're in this situation when you're worried enough already.

Costs - I think £1500 is a great budget. We had £1000 2 years ago and then my mum bought us the pram, which was around £500, so right on target. This time round, we'll be re-using lots and then depending on the gender, buying new clothes as needed. We are definitely going to find out what the sex is as all DD's early months clothes are stored in the UK and we're now in the US so we need to decide what to ship over. Here they'll tell you the sex from 18 weeks.

Had my first scan today, 8+5 (internal) and definitely due 1 Nov. Think the Dr was amazed how precise my dates were! Here they will scan you at every visit if you want it over 6 weeks so there's no reason not to have early scans at all - just cost I guess. It's so sad about the postcode lottery - everyone should get the same standard of care, regardless.

Looking forward to hearing how the rest of you got on with your scans scheduled for today. I spent most of this morning wishing I was in a different time zone and then I would have had it already, if that makes sense!

OneLittleToddleTerror · 27/03/2013 20:00

saundy you are supposed to tuck a baby into blankets with their arms outside too. Grobag has a page on what the baby should wear underneath at different temperature.

gro.co.uk/pages/what-to-wear

You will notice also they are lower togs compared to our duvets. Similar if you look at toddler/cot bed duvets. They are worse then us at regulating their temperature so we can't use very warm bedding. Also it's warmer in a bag or a smaller blanket/duvet.

BenthamFriday · 27/03/2013 20:27

Hi again everyone, and thanks for the welcome, Saundy! I have a question: I went for my first appointment with the GP last Tuesday and she said I'd get my booking in appointment at week 10 (currently 6+5) but I've not heard anything about the date. Do you think it's worth checking in with the GP? Work is super-busy at the moment so I'm just worrying about it clashing with a big meeting or presentation - just want time to re-schedule stuff!

OneLittleToddleTerror · 27/03/2013 20:36

bentham then get used to the inflexibility of the NHS. I was never given alternatives in any of the appointments. For example I'm 9 weeks and supposed to have a scan at 12 weeks. My appointment will come through the post at 10 weeks, supposedly. I have no choice in date or time. From last time's experience, if I want to reschedule, I can ring a number at the hospital, and they can cancel the appointment, and I will be given another one in the post. But I am sure this is very much a postcode lottery in how much flexibility they have. I'm in a birth hotspot so the service is very stretched.

busyprocrastinating · 27/03/2013 20:39

Hi. It's just taken me ages to catch up on everything.
So sorry to hear your sad news Vix
Well ofsted is over so been a busy couple of days not helped with dd coming down with a sickness bug and crying half the night.

The grobags were brill. I had one with a zip in the bottom so you could feed and change in the night without taking it off. Saundy I was really surprised with dd how little bedding they need. My midwife said to me if she is too cold she will cry but if she is too hot she will die which really stuck with me and so I followed the instructions to the letter. The grobag also came with a room temperature gage which days which tog bag they need. Dd only just came out of her bags at Christmas when she was 2.2.

We are off on holiday tomorrow night so really need to start some cleaning and packing

Theicingontop · 27/03/2013 20:51

Pouch sling tutorial.

I made a reversible lined sling in really boring neutral colours, this time I'm gonna go mad and have my OH refuse to wear it in public.

BenthamFriday · 27/03/2013 20:55

Ah! Ok OneLittle - thanks for the tip! Will sit tight in that case and see what the NHS decrees!

Busy I hope you have a lovely holiday!

Saundy · 27/03/2013 21:06

OMG busy & one I know nothing!! Arms out anyway & being too warm in bed can kill them!!! Who tells you this stuff. I know they don't come with a book but do you at least get a flyer? Or is there a book??

Yeah as I understand it BF you get it in the post a week or so before. It was slightly different for me as the receptionist recognised me (gutted) so she booked me straight in for one at 8 weeks.

Enjoy Busy, very jealous!

Saundy · 27/03/2013 21:10

Oh & congrats on the scan wibbly was there much to see?

busyprocrastinating · 27/03/2013 21:11

They really should come with an instruction manual! Someone- possibly a midwife- did give me an nhs book with lots of info and you just pick it up as you go along. And mn is good too!

We are only staying in a caravan in cornwall so hoping the weather warms up for us! It has snowed on and off here all day.

Saundy · 27/03/2013 21:17

Even if its cold it'll still be lovely to just get away. Am currently trying to decide how realistic Glasto would be at 5ish months pregnant. The line up looks amazing!!

Fingers crossed the books haven't gone along with the majority of the NHS budget.

BenthamFriday · 27/03/2013 21:22

An instruction manual would be GREAT - I don't even understand the appointment system, let alone a baby. The arm and blanket thing was news to me too, Saundy. My knowledge is currently a gaping void...Confused

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHopeful · 27/03/2013 21:31

vix glad you know for sure now but I was really hoping for better news. Hope you have a happier pregnancy really soon.

saundy I wouldn't if it were me but I got bad spd with dd and the walking would destroy my pelvis. If you think you can then go for it. You should be showing a bit by then so can push infront at all the toilet queues.

theicing thanks for the sling info, I might havd to push that under MILs nose, she's a dab hand with a sewinv machine.

I couldn't get the swaddling thing to work at all for dd. We bought a special one with Velcro. Wrapped her up so she looked like a little glow worm, sat looking all smug thinking she'll never get out of that. She got her arms out within 10 minutes, like a 2 day old Houdini.

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 27/03/2013 21:33

Hi Saundy - you will be fine!

Was there much to see? Well, surprisingly, yes! I was shocked as with DD I had the early scan at 7+5 and the picture is like a fried egg. You can't make anything out at all. This time, you could see the curve of the head and the body, like a tiny version of the 12 week scan pics you see. I wasn't expecting there to be that much difference within a week at all! We could also make out the spine, the Dr pointed it out, and the yolk sack.

We're booked in for 12 weeks now, which will be interesting as they don't do the nuchal fold scan as standard here and so we had to request it. We have to see a genetic counsellor for half an hour beforehand! To be honest, I'm trying to follow the NHS advice we had two years ago and then take advantage of anything extra we can get here. Saying that, they don't do gas and air and DD popped out super quick so no time for an epidural so I'm screwed for pain relief when the time comes... Fingers crossed it'll be quick again...

Oh yeah, another vote for Grobags and there's a company called Halo that makes similar things with foot holes for older kids, they're great.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 27/03/2013 21:37

I was given a pregnancy book and a birth to 5 book by the NHS. I'm not sure who gave them out though. There is also a red book which i know i got when we were discharged after birth. (It is the baby's medical records). It has a coloured page on safe sleep practices.

MummaPanda · 27/03/2013 22:40

Saudy I went to a gig whilst about 6months pregnant with dd, but didn't enjoy it as there were so many people squished around me, I was so paranoid I was going to get an elbow in the belly, spent the whole time trying to protect my bump! Plus the loud music made her freak out a bit in my belly lol

TiredFeet · 27/03/2013 23:11

Saundy if you do a search I definitely saw threads on here about doing glastonbury pregnant with lots of information and tips (would have been 2010 but sure there will be more threads!) . Wouldn't be for me though as I needed to wee all the time in my last pregnancy and also felt a bit nervous in crowds. But lots of people were managing it and enjoying themselves from the thread I saw. And I went sailing on the south coast at 8 months so I am definitely all for doing what makes you happy in pregnancy Smile.
