Will this one take us through to the end of the first trimester? Will the sickness ever end? Will we be able to judge genders from those first scan pictures? These and many other mysteries to be solved in... THREAD 4

Good luck for today's scanees, I hope it all goes well and you get some fab pics.

Snow snow snow here AGAIN! Just want to go back to bed but dd needs to get to school and I'm helping my mum at work this morning. Maybe an afternoon nap is in order!

roofio87 · 27/03/2013 08:27

I had a full bladder for mine,so I felt like I wanted a wee,but it wasn't so full I was really uncomfortable or in pain. the sonographer said the image was so clear because my uterus must have been pushed right up to the surface! the last few days I've noticed that my lower tummy is very hard so guess that's the start of my bump! I can't get over how amazing the last week has been,my heads still spinning and to top it all I think I'm starting to feel much better,no more nausea and I stayed up till 11 last night and didn't feel too tired, miracle!!Smile Smile
hope everyone scanning today goes well and gets a good look at their baba!!

FeministInTraining · 27/03/2013 08:36

Morning! Roofio your happiness is shining through my phone, made me smile I'm made up for you!

So sorry to hear Sal's news, but amazing attitude as has already been said.

Scan buddies, we've got a week until the big day! So so excited reading about everyone's experiences, can't wait to have mine although still having moments of panic. I think I'm feeling more normal now but then the bras I bought a few weeks ago are getting a bit small so something's going on! Will have to go shopping for new ones next week as mother is the bra police fitter Hmm

Natalieand · 27/03/2013 08:39

feminist fellow scan buddy I too am so rediculously excited!!!! Who would of known one single week could take so long too pass I'm have my nieces and brothers 3rd and 18th birthday over the next few days so hoping that will help it pass a little quicker xxx

BowlFullofJelly · 27/03/2013 08:39

We have some sunshine in West London! Very exciting!

Congrats on all of the scans ladies - Cazboldy, falcon, crunchie (sorry if I missed anyone - roofio I can't believe your scan picture, that is amazing, I've never seen a 12 week scan so clear!

Good luck to all of those with scans today, can't wait to see some more pics.

To everyone asking about drinking before scan, I had one 500ml bottle of water about 30 minutes before my scan, and the sonographer was commenting all the way through how full my bladder was and sent me out to have a wee while she wrote up the notes as I must be so uncomfortable - which I was. Drink a bit, don't make yourself uncomfortable - worst comes to worst they would send you out to drink some more, scan someone else then get you back in.

Re the work thing, my approach is slightly different really. I'm very aware that even though I have nothing to feel guilty about, me taking maternity leave is a pain in the arse. So both times I have told my manager I have gone armed with some facts for him - when I expect to start maternity leave, when I expect to come back, suggestions for my cover. For me it helps to be very professional, be very open and adult about it, and work with them to minimise the impact. I am lucky though to have a pretty supportive employer - I work hard (she says while on MN at work Blush) and am very flexible, take minimal time off etc, and in return they have always been very flexible with me when it comes to maternity and childcare with DS.

pinksky · 27/03/2013 11:37

Morning ladies! GO and cherry and crunchie yay for you all, so pleased your scans went well.

I'm so sorry you're having to contend with ice and SPD Jelly. Take care.

Roofio you have given me hope! I can't wait to feel more 'me'.

Caz and Tarlia re: third stage - I've been thinking about this a lot for some reason...If all goes to plan I was going to opt for a mixed 3rd stage: wait for cord to stop pulsating and have the injection at that point, but absolutely no cord traction/fundal pressure. Do they always do that, or do most people push it out themselves? Acupuncture sounds great, I might ask someone to come just to do this..!

If anyone's interested, the recent cochrane review (Active versus expectant management for women in the third stage of labour) reported that there was poor quality evidence generally, but that:
For all women, irrespective of their risk of bleeding, active management reduced severe bleeding and anaemia. However, it also reduced the baby?s birthweight and increased the mother's blood pressure, afterpains, vomiting and the number of women returning to hospital with bleeding. For women at low risk of bleeding, findings were similar though there was no difference in risk of severe bleeding. Women should be given information antenatally to help them make informed choices. Some of the adverse effects experienced by mothers may possibly be avoided by using specific uterotonic drugs. Delaying cord clamping may benefit the baby by preventing the reduction in blood volume from early cord clamping, but more research is needed to be sure. Also it may be that just giving a uterotonic might reduce severe bleeding without reducing the baby's blood volume

MumWithCamera · 27/03/2013 12:57

Morning ladies! Have been quiet on here awhile, I can't believe how busy I have been, not enough time to rest and recuperate from MS and tiredness. My 3 year old has started waking every day at 6am (previous she slept till 8am) so I am looking forward to some R&R over the Easter weekend when my partner is back and allow me some lie-ins Grin

My scan is 8 April so I see I'm scan buddies with moonblues, sephy, blondies, dumpling and smitten Smile I will be 13 weeks on the 8th so hoping for a good picture/sizeable blob! Grin

Enjoying reading all about everyone's symptons and see the scan pictures. I can't wait until the scan day. For some reason I am feeling much more nervous then when I was pregnant with DD.

Oh, and over the last few weeks I have found out that two of my closest friends are also pregnant and in their first trimester. How great to have gals to go baby-shopping with! he he!! Does anyone else have pregnancy-buddies in RL?

Natalieand · 27/03/2013 13:06

Omg I just realise I missed my folic acid yesterday it's the second tablet I've missed since my bfp. Isit gunna matter do u think? Dh is making me feel guilty :-(

MumWithCamera · 27/03/2013 13:16

Natalie I asked the midwife about this, because I got a BFN and stopped taking the folic acid for about a week (dont ask me why, I think I was being a bit blonde!). Anyway the midwife was completely unconcerned about me stopping it for a week and also for missing the odd day - she seemed to say that as long as you take it 'most the time' that was the main thing... Hope that reassures!

MumWithCamera · 27/03/2013 13:17

Oh forgot to say that when I got the BFP I then started taking it after ..a week later... to explain!

pinksky · 27/03/2013 13:39

MumWithCamera sounds like you have a lot on with your 3yo! Hopefully they'll be wonderfully helpful when your little one arrives. It's a good age to fetch nappies etc isn't it.

Natalie don't worry if you forget the odd one. I've started putting mine with my toothbrush as I forgot a few and brushing my teeth is about the only thing I'm guaranteed to do every day! Also, AFAIK it's not necessary to take after 12 weeks.

MumWithCamera · 27/03/2013 14:23

pinksy yes I've bought some dolls for her to practice with, and will be starting her on "training" during the third trimester, so she will hopefully be a keen and energetic mother's help by due date! Grin

Smitten1981 · 27/03/2013 15:10

Is anyone planning to carry on with the folic acid/pregnancy vitamins after 12 weeks? I don't think I will.

PseudoBadger · 27/03/2013 15:12

I will, as I like to take a multi vitamin (for vitamin d for example), and many non-pregnancy mixes are inappropriate for pregnant women.

cazboldy · 27/03/2013 16:06

pinksky I had a reaction to the injection after my second baby, so refused it with numbers 3,4 and 5.

With all of them, it came naturally about 10 mins after the baby.

Will have the injection this time (have already had to agree, as she wouldn't have signed me over onto community care otherwise!) but unless there is spectacular bleeding (which is unlikely, as long as iron levels are nice and high, which my mw said she would keep an eye on) then plan on just letting it come on it's own...... the doc said if not here after half an hour then they would intervene.

pinksky · 27/03/2013 16:13

Thanks Caz it's really helpful to hear other people's experiences. Doesn't seem to be talked about much. Ten minutes sounds pretty swift! If you don't mind me asking did you have you baby breastfeeding immediately? I've heard that can help. Don't answer if too personal!

Smitten I've got a pack of 90 so going to just stop when they run out.

Sparkeleigh · 27/03/2013 17:04

I got my scan today and it was great! I was so relived to see there really is a baby and it wasn't all in my head!

The ultrasound was really clear, we could see the baby's arms waving around and he completely jumped at one point, which was amazing to see. We got photos, they weren't as clear as the screen but we can see the head, body and maybe an arm.

I got moved back to 9 weeks 4 or 5 days, but that's only a couple of days behind where I thought I was so that's not too bad.

pinkmoonlight · 27/03/2013 17:54

Congrats to all those with lovely scan news!

I told my head teacher and got a subdued reaction, but much more positive than I'd expected. He reckons wait until I'm about 16 weeks before we tell the school parents- I'm having to dress strategically now so I really doubt the news will last that long!

I managed to get my scan date changed to Friday April 12th- when I will be exactly 12 weeks! So excited! Smile
