FoofFighter · 22/04/2013 16:17

I think in some areas it's normal yes, to meet you have a snoop round your house before baby comes, seems a bit early to me though? I have to say that the HV will be getting short shrift from me, I know where they are if I need them, bugger off and leave me alone!!

Beckie, I was totally washed out by 11am :/ So long to to till maternity leave too Sad

BabyHMummy · 22/04/2013 16:27

They aren't from my surgery which threw me to start with...was really rather confused.

Have no idea what to expect from their visit but will be cleaning the flat to within an inch of its life this weekend!!

Have heard some real horror stories about hv's...are they really as bad as ppl make out?

I am in 2 minds over bf cos of my Knackered shoulder...it hasn't been too bad lately but if it gets worse i will be back on morphine which means i can't bf on it. Are they likey to berate me and force the issue?

Chuckaluck · 22/04/2013 16:38

Well I am 26 weeks today. Feels like a massive milestone but also seems to have kicked in some not nice pregnancy symptoms!

Have been really lucky to date with hardly any symptoms but not slept well the last 2 nights, am very grumpy as a result and want to kill DH! Just can't get comfy and if I do, have been woken with cramps. On train at the minute in way back from London and I feel like I can't breath and quite claustrophobic. Had to go due to work but might say I can't go again if they ask in the next 11 weeks before I start maternity leave. Felt claustrophobic on tube too and not felt like that before. Just feel huge and I know it's going to get worse Sad

Sorry for the whinge just feeling a bit sorry for myself! On the positive side a friend had her first baby today. 1 week early and in 5 hours from start to finish! Now I hope my labour is like that! Wink

muddybloodypuddles · 22/04/2013 19:49

chuck - I have been feeling slight shortness of breath could it be that? Not in an emergency way just like I can't get quite enough air and need to open the window to take a big lungful, feels a bit claustrophobic...

Am not with the cramps brigade but am def with the uncomfortable sleeping and heartburn brigade. Currently have about 7 pillows around be, sleeping in almost sitting up position which leaves me with neck and shoulder ache but does allow be to get some sleep without heartburn - until I slip down and get woken up by horrendous heartburn, sometimes it's also just because baby has changed position. Don't forget ladies you can get Gaviscon on prescription...

I am avoiding pictures of Kate Middleton...

Regarding the homebirth thing (which I am considering), I was born at home and tried to ask my dad about it today as met him for lunch. He said he wasn't sure if it was planned, he only really remembers trying to start the car and it wouldn't start... If you ask my mum she says it was all planned and was the easiest, nicest birth she had (there's 5 of us but I was the only one born at home) - men eh!?!

25 weeks today :-)

muddybloodypuddles · 22/04/2013 19:51

Babyhmummy - am wondering if they want to visit as you've been signed off with anxiety??

FoofFighter · 22/04/2013 20:02

babyHmummy, no health care professional should be forcing any issue with you, if they do, get them told! it's totally upto you if you bf or not.

IJustWoreMyTrenchcoat · 22/04/2013 20:32

Ruck on the subject of GTT's I just found out today at my 24 week appointment that I will need one at around 26 weeks because I have a first degree relative (sibling in my case) who has diabetes. The information was in the family history part of my Maternity Notes but nobody up until today suggested I would need a GTT. The Midwife said if it had just been my Grandparent I wouldn't have needed one.

I am a bit gutted about it, the glucose solution sounds rank and a friend who had the test said there is about 200ml of the stuff to get down. Also, stupidly, I feels really personal and I don't want my colleagues knowing and judging my result [pathetic emoticon!!]

Still, 2 hours off work though so it has its benefits.

BabyHMummy · 22/04/2013 20:40

muddy i did wonder that but she said it was routine that they come out to meet us. I was shocked cos will be 24 weeks so still a way to go so seems a bit early but you may have a point as i did see the mw at hospital fill out some alert paperwork so could be

foof i know but am just a bit concerned as a frsend of mine who ia under same community hv team had massive issues with them over bf. The medical thing aside dp felt really isolated from so much of the early baby times with his ds and dda his exw bf but also never let him near. He was pretty clueless about how to be a dad til he met me as she literally didn't let him do anything. I think if i ff he will get a much better experience and bond with her and feel more confident as a dad..i know that seems silly but its really important to me that he is involved

Chuckaluck · 22/04/2013 21:05

Yes muddy that is exactly how it felt. Not had it before and dont really want it again!

wavesandsmiles · 22/04/2013 21:32

I have to have the gtt as my dad had diabetes all his life. No idea how I'll manage it given i am still throwing up, but that's due in a couple of weeks.

I'm still at hospital every single day, but hoping to risk a day off at some stage this week. Next scan is in 4 weeks, it's awful having to struggle so much to get calories in, but I'm worried about the baby, especially as he was on the small side at my last scan.

Ditsy79 · 22/04/2013 22:04

I've got to go for the GTT too - I'm not having it til nearly 30 weeks though, although I think it's meant to be done at 28.
I went to see the midwife this afternoon after my clumsy fall down the stairs last night - she said that everything is fine with the baby, which was a huge relief.
Counting down the days to my holiday on 4th May - cannot wait to get away.

chocolatesolveseverything · 22/04/2013 22:04

I've had the GTT once already this pregnancy. Not sure if I'll need it again, but I do have close relatives with diabetes so midwife was considering it. Last time the outcome was weird (fasting result higher than post-glucose result).

So do other health trusts make you drink some yukky special glucose solution? I was just given lucozade. Not my favourite of drinks, but not too bad.

chocolatesolveseverything · 22/04/2013 22:05

Glad everything's alright with baby Ditzy.

BabyHMummy · 22/04/2013 22:10

chocolates think lucozade is the norm hun. And its vile so am quite glad that my consultant agreed to forgo the gtt for me cos the stuff makes me throw up!! They agreed that my insulin resistance wouldn't give a true result plus i monitor my cigars daily so yay no vile drinks for me!!!

chocolatesolveseverything · 22/04/2013 22:23

BabyH - I assume that bit about monitoring your cigars is a typo, but hope you don't mind me saying it did just make me laugh! Smile

BabyHMummy · 22/04/2013 22:26

Haha yes sorry bloody phone!! Sugars not cigars

RememberingMyPFEs · 23/04/2013 06:20

I have to pick up a prescription for the drink for my GTT in Friday so I'm guessing its not just lucozade Hmm dreading it and dreading the judgement on my weight if there is an issue HmmHmm
My heartburn is better than it was but cramps and restless legs are a daily feature now. I'm so tired and sleeping like crap. If one more person tells me "it's good practice" or "just wait til the baby comes then you'll know what no sleep is" I might actually punch them! Confused
The good news is I have a week off after today for my 40th birthday. Hoping for good weather!

BabyHMummy · 23/04/2013 09:52

remembering i said the same when i was bad with the hyperemesis and old waves tales for curing sickness! People think they mean well but it is just bloody irritating. I literally got to the point at work where i announced that i would slap the next person who mentioned anything to do with ginger.

Good luck for the gtt hun. I hope they aren't funny with you cos its out of order of they are.

BabyHMummy · 23/04/2013 11:09

Mw has just rung and is doing my matb1 form me. She was surprised the hospital hadn't given it to me. She has also confirmed the pain is spd and is referring me for physio

RugBugs · 23/04/2013 11:41

BabyHMummy DPs Mother is a recently retired HV and she used to do some pre-birth visits. I think it totally depends on the individual HV and who you get is usually determined by which gp surgery you're at.
There's a huge shortage of HVs our way atm, DPs Mum and a few others took retirement at the same time (my HV was among them) so they are all having to cover the caseload between them. A lot of what they do during the early checks is box-ticking, making sure you've got specific leaflets etc.

You'll find if you ff you'll most likely be treated a little better in a post-natal ward, baby will be taken to nurses station at night so they can feed them and you'll probably get out quicker (mine made sure all first time mums had a lot of bf support/were observed feeding x many times).

Remembering it's a pile of crap all this 'just you wait til baby's here' talk about no sleep. I didn't mind the lack of sleep and actually didn't feel sleep deprived. I've no idea how, DD was a clingy baby but being pg this time round is way harder than I remember dealing with a newborn being.

BabyHMummy · 23/04/2013 11:44

Thanks rug she did say it was just routine but will be on operation deep clean all weekend i think!

GaryBuseysTeeth · 23/04/2013 13:10

There are 2 HV local to me, one of them (our 'main one') is a bloody diamond & I luff her, the other is a miserable fart who I try to avoid (DS has had a high temperature ONCE since being born, took him to the clinic to see if he was ill & she rolled her eyes and dismissed me as a PFB-er, mardy cah).
However I've heard the horror stories of SS referrals etc so feel lucky to have the lovely one.

BabyH, in my experience, once I gave up bf (DS was 2wks old) that was the end of it as far as HV were concerned, this time around I told MW I wasn't planning on bf & she's not pushed it since.
Glad you've been referred for physio!

Good luck to everyone with GTT coming up soon, and waves hope some miracle occurs & you're less hospital dependant soon.

24+3

FoofFighter · 23/04/2013 16:06

I also have to have the GTT due to bmi 32 Hmm already had one done at 11 weeks as my booking bloods were off (despite me asking would the big piece of cake I had an hour before bloods took have an impact!!) the GTT was not pleasant I have to say. Our place do the thick oily, gloopy gluscose shite. Although they do have a glass of water for you to down right after it to wash it out of your mouth.

Nobody advised me on what to do after the tests were done and I almost keeled over in town, please don't get straight in your car and drive after it! Go and get something to eat and sit down for a while for it to get into your system. If i had been a driver i would have caused an accident. As it is, another regular from the pub saw me and rushed over all concerned as I was weaving all over the place and generally looking like death warmed up, the shakes, the sweats, felt like was going to pass out.

Really not looking forward to another one :( Unfortunately I think as there are rarely other symptoms with GD to pick up on that I can't say i will have it if anything else is thrown up as being off.

:(

babyH, that makes perfect sense but still nobody should be treating you differently because of your choices and if you feel they are COMPLAIN! Also bear in mind you do not legally need to have HV input.

MrsPennyapple · 23/04/2013 16:30

Wow, this thread has moved on LOADS! I tried reading it all but there's just too much so I've sort of scanned it a bit.

Ijustwore You mentioned feeling movements like a strong heartbeat - could it be hiccups? I've just this week felt little un's first hiccupping session. DD had them loads, always at 11.30 at night, just as I was trying to go to sleep. Helpful, that.

BabyH My HV visited me at home before DD was born, but it was closer to due date. Maybe they are just very busy and want to fit everybody in, so are doing it earlier than they normally would? Mine was / is lovely, although she was a bit misleading about bf. When I asked about duration / frequency, she said "You could be feeding every hour, and it could be up to 15 min at a time" as if that was worst case scenario. She failed to tell me it could be two to three hours at a time! But DD was a hungry girl, and a comfort sucker too, she'd have stayed latched on 24/7 if I'd let her. She never once voluntarily un-latched after a feed. They shouldn't be pushy about it, they want you to be a happy and healthy mum, and if that means taking medication that rules out bf, then so be it.

Thank you, whoever explained the difference between SPD and PGP. I think mine must be SPD then, as it is right at the front, both sides. Not too painful most of the time, thankfully.

Turning over in bed is now a major operation, which has to be carefully planned!

Autumn12 · 23/04/2013 16:47

I have a GTT test too at 28 weeks. Dreading the sitting around for hours the most I think. Trying not to think about the drink they will give me.

Has anyone else found themselves very fidgetty and restless as the pregnancy has gone one. I'm finding it hard to sit at my desk at work all day.
