My midwife told me to take vitamin d supplements at my first appointment. Standard practice in NE Scotland where there is no sun. Given the state of this winter the rest of you may need it too...

elliejjtiny · 26/03/2013 00:13

Glad your scan went well sashabella. Abz my midwife told me to take vitamin d as well.

DS2 came out of school saying he'd had a great day and been really good, which he often does on days when I have to prize him off me and then worry all day.

Ok this is going to sound really pathetic but is there anything we can take to help with a pulled muscle. I've got a horrible cough and now I've pulled what's left of my stomach muscles with the combination of coughing and my morning sickness suddenly getting worse. Going to sleep in an armchair tonight as when I tried to lie down earlier my lungs started filling up with gunk. So I did my usual sitting up and coughing it all up and try to go back to sleep again but I've given up for tonight as it hurts too much.

dinkystinky · 26/03/2013 06:32

Abzs I'm taking pregnancy bits with added vit d as I know I go grey in winter otherwise (not a good look on an Indian).

Ellie - hopefully one of the drs on here can advise but if not, call your Dr for advice. Sounds super painful. I hope you managed to get some sleep last night.

Morning all.

How's your bump watch all going? I swear every morning mine is getting not only larger but higher and higher. Thanks to years of pudge my belly button hasn't vanished yet but do have a line. Not sure what its called and its not a hair line just a dark pigment going from my button south. Can't believe there's only 16 weeks to go. Not long now.

PhieEl06 · 26/03/2013 06:44

Morning all! Can I join the clumsy club please? Grin I think my balance has completely disappeared, as well as turning round into walls, dropping everything (hairbrush on foot was painful) & misjudging gaps, for example walking into my kitchen to put my glass in the sink, completely misjudged the width of the door & swung my arm & the glass in my hand into the door frame, luckily I didn't hurt myself too badly or anyone else but spent the next hour picking bits of glass up.

Congratulations Sashabella!

Marie counting down the days literally now, it'll be easier today, I have my maternity cover in for the day on some training & it's just me & her in, easy day for me, making it 100000x better that she's my best friend from outside work anyway. Grin

Have a lovely day all! 23+3

dinkystinky · 26/03/2013 08:28

Photographer - its called your linea nigra - don't worry, it normally disappears after the birth.

Persuasion · 26/03/2013 08:36

Congratulations on good scan sasha

ellie if you're coughing up gunk you really need to see your GP as may need antibiotics (I can't remember if you've had some already, but may need more anyway). Paracetamol is the pain relief staple, although I believe we can now have codeine you'd also want to check with your GP beforehand. I hope you're feeling better soon, it sounds pretty unpleasant.

photographer the line is a linea nigra. I have half of one, it hasn't made it up to my belly button yet! My bump is definitely growing, I think chip is having a growth spurt as this week I'm exhausted and starving all the time! My boss was away for a week and said yesterday how much bump had grown in one week. My belly button is still flat, but does hilarious things if I sit on my ball and do pelvis rotations, I'm enjoying freaking DH out with it Grin

BB01 · 26/03/2013 09:29

Am so behind again!! Sorry for any news, good or bad, I may have missed.

Just being scanning through the past couple of pages.

Baddmiss, hope you are ok and not too shaken up now. Horrible thing to happen at best of times not least while PG.

Ellie, hope today is less stressful.

Totally, I think if running makes you feel good keep it up as long as it feels right. I thought I was going to have to turn back on my (quite pathetic) 25-min jog the other day as started to get painful 'down there' but as soon as I found some softer ground to run on I felt fine. The main thing for me is the mental lift it gives me. I really miss it when I have a couple of weeks off!

Had a day of panicking as baby movements really tailed off. Read up on it and saw that often midwives will advise you to drink a cold drink and see if that works before you go in. Followed the advice and before the can was empty, baby had gone insanely active again!

Had what I hope may be one of my final dramas while pregnant on Friday. DH and I got car completely stuck in snow in middle of country lane while visiting in laws. Had to get towed out by farmer and then wade through snow, blizzard and pitch blackness for about half an hour to their house. With all our luggage (I didn't carry anything luckily!). At one point the snow drifts were waist deep!!

Anybody finding it awkward having to turn down second hand stuff? We're getting nearly everything second hand, and I mean everything, which I'm so grateful for and I like to reuse things and not waste stuff. However my parents want to buy our pushchair for us which is lovely so that is the one thing we are getting brand new. It's our first baby and it's lovely to be able to choose which one we want (not the most high end by any means but one that we love and that will suit our lifestyle). However we were offered one by somebody we know and when we said thank you so much but we're buying one she had a bit of a strop about it hinting that it was ridiculous when she was offering one for free. Very awkward! Tried to explain it was one of the few things we're choosing ourselves/getting new but still not sure she understood!!! Oh dear, the trials and tribulations of preparing for a baby!

BB01 · 26/03/2013 09:30

Eek sorry, my grammar is not always as bad as it was in the last post!!

dinkystinky · 26/03/2013 09:35

BB01 - that sounds like quite an eventful journey. Glad you made it to your in laws ok in the end. I think if you simply say thanks but no thanks - the grandparents want to get that item as their gift to the baby and I couldnt say no to them most people would say ok, no problem and go on your way. The fact your acquaintance threw a strop is really weird - was she trying to sell it to you?

SundaySunshine · 26/03/2013 13:50

Darn it, I haven't been on for ages so I wrote a nice big post last night only for it to go missing due to incorrect log in (ach, could have told me that before I started typing!).

I got woken in the night by DD calling out in some distress from the hallway, as I opened my bedroom door she ran at me and threw up all over my feet. Before I could find the light switch and help her to the bathroom she was sick all over the hallway carpet too. Poor lamb. So after getting her sorted spent the wee hours scrubbing carpets and disenfecting floors Sad. She seems fine now.

I was told to take vit D supplements too as apparently rickets is on the rise - not surprising with the crap weather we've had recently.

Sorry not to name check but I'm on the phone and can't keep anything in my brain for more than two secs. But well done for good scan news, poor you to those getting hit by and stuck in cars, sounds dreadfull. And sympathy to those suffering child tantrums, you sounded as if you kept heroically calm to me.

Right, back to painting the bathroom

26 + 4 (wow it seems to be going too fast now, never satisfied!)

elliejjtiny · 26/03/2013 14:11

Thanks everyone. persuasion I thought coughing up gunk was ok as long as it wasn't green.

Sleeping upright helped reduce the coughing thank goodness but didn't get much sleep as I was so uncomfortable. I'm chain drinking hot squash and on the maximum dose of my asthma inhalers to try and reduce the coughing and rest my stomach muscles. I must look and sound dreadful though as DH took both the older boys to school today and phoned me to say that he was going to leave work early and pick them up for me which he never does, even if I have the kind of tummy bug that means you should stay very close to a bathroom. DS3 and I are having a sofa and dvd day today. He wasn't impressed with my choice of dvd though so I'm on mumsnet while he watches cbeebies.

BB01 I get a lot of offers of 2nd hand baby stuff, some of it is gratefully received and used while others are discreetly passed on. With 3 children already we have loads of clothes, moses basket, toys and cot but we need to replace the worn out bouncy chair and get a sling that's suitable from newborn. I did having a baby on a budget with DS1 and I think you made the right choice having a new buggy. I've had 4 buggies with my 3 children and the one I chose and bought new was by far the best one. We'll use it until it wears out now so well worth the money. Did your friend have a lot of her baby stuff 2nd hand? Maybe she's jealous.

dinkystinky · 26/03/2013 14:15

Oh no poor DD SundaySunshine - hope she feels better soon and you're not too knackered. Take it easy today. Hope you're feeling better too Ellie - glad your DH is being super supportive.

Had my antenatal appt with GP today - v nice GP and listened to the baby's heartbeat which was thudding away. Apparently baby is head down - and my fundus is measuring bang on for my dates - so those movements I feel at the top must be the long legged Bean kicking! Seems to be a boxer in training though as a I swear I can feel Bean pummelling my cervix at times.

Do any of the medics on here know when the best time to have the whooping cough vaccine is (I know you can have it post 28 weeks but is later better)?

OP posts:
MightBeMad · 26/03/2013 14:32

Hello all!

Ellie - I've just had a v similar cough and the inhalers weren't touching it. The gp couldn't hear any rattle (suggesting infection) so I ended up, reluctantly, with a 5 day course of prednislone. I have to say it has worked magic. After five weeks of coughing, sleepless nights and chest muscles so sore I would cry out in pain if I tried to lie on my back or lift my arms above shoulder hight, suddenly I'm down to two puffs of preventer a day and next-to-no coughing at all. I really think a visit to the gp might be in order for you...

23 weeks today (and I can breathe - even went to the gym today Grin )

bigbelly4 · 26/03/2013 14:45

Afternoon ladies!

Well, I think I can officially say ineed to join the clumsy club! So far today I have broken two glasses on seperate occasions and dropped a jar of marmite overthe floor -grrrr. I alos am now a dab hand at walking into door frames andthe cornerof tables.

On the plus side, I made it to the gym for a swim today- first timesince keeling over a few weeks ago,
And feel reallygood for it!

My asthma is begining to kick in as inow have"the cough" but so far not too bad.

Ds2 is having regular nightmares atthe moment bless him, hetells me all about them as we snuggle in bed - usually involving deadly60 spiders/scorpions etc. Tbh ithink helikes the snuggles and may be playing up to it-heyho!

dinkystinky · 26/03/2013 17:00

Ah bless your DS2 Bigbelly - that's very sweet. DS1 likes deadly 60 but I have to ration it as DS2 (who is only 4) gets abit scared watching it (he's more of an Andy's Wild Adventures fan).

Sounds like there's been a spate of gym going!

Am off out tonight to a private viewing of an exhibition my sister curated - looking forward to it as by the time the next exhibition rolls round, I'll be home with a little baby permanently attached to me.

Evening!

Sorry to hear about those with coughs and colds, hope they clear up soon and without too many pulled muscles.

Great news on the scan sashabella!

BB01 that sounds like a nightmare of a journey, but at least an exciting story to tell the LO when he/she is older Smile. I'm with you on the second hand stuff, and agree that buggy/travel system is one thing that is nice to have new if possible. I had one friend who became very over-enthusiastic shall we say, in his efforts to get me to have their DC's old buggy, to the point where I found myself having to say I'd think about it, even though I had no intention of doing so. Fortunately when I mentioned it to his wife she said "oh that, well it's a bit tatty, you'd probably prefer to get a new one". I'm guessing she's been there before!

Haha photographer like the term "bump watch". I was pleasantly surprised today when I told two people (separately) that I was expecting and they said they'd already guessed. Made me feel very proud of my little bump-ette, especially as I'd been picking the right moment with these individuals so deliberately wearing looser clothing around them over the past few weeks. Mind you one of them followed it up with "I was going to ask but then I thought I'd better not in case you'd just got a bit fat!" Yeah, thanks for that...

No linea negra for me yet (though some people never get one apparently) and although belly button definitely looks a little odd, it's still more of an innie than an outie or a "flattie".

Yep, I was told my MW to take vit D supplement all the way through as well. In fact I think it was on the news recently that all pg women living in this sort of climate should take it.

Off to Paris for a few days tomorrow for a last foreign mini-break with DH and a few friends before LO arrives. Have a lovely Easter everyone Flowers

TotallyEasterEggFlipped · 26/03/2013 20:16

Ama have a great time in Paris! Ladurée macaroons and cakes are worth a detour.

Abzs · 26/03/2013 21:23

Re the vitamin d, I have a friend who is a post doc researcher in pre/Neo natal medicine. She mentioned that one of her colleagues is researching links between vit d deficiency in mothers and incidence of ms in their children. She didn't go into great detail, but said the results so far support taking the supplements.

Abzs · 26/03/2013 21:27

BB01 was your friend just miffed that she had to find another way of getting rid of the pram?

elliejjtiny · 26/03/2013 21:51

mightbe Your cough sounds very familiar. I'll ring the GP tomorrow. I've drunk loads today which I think is helping to dilute the gunk a bit. My asthma always gets worse in pregnancy, particularly when I have a cold. You'd think I'd have learnt by now to increase the dose on my brown inhaler from the start of pregnancy rather than wait to get a cold first. I always forget how bad a cold in pregnancy makes my asthma.

25+4

BadMissM · 26/03/2013 23:01

Ama Give my love to Paris...I lived there for 6 years! I'm sure you'll have fun, Paris in the springtime is one of those cliches that is true!

Abzs The Vitamin D research sounds interesting...

My midwife has disappeared, I've seen her precisely twice....and she told me bugger all!

Sashabella0 · 26/03/2013 23:09

I was recommend to take vitamin D by my midwife. The NICE guidelines on routine antenatal care for healthy pregnant women recommends taking a supplement of 10 micrograms daily to ensure you get enough.

dinkystinky · 27/03/2013 06:50

Have fun in Paris Ama.

not caught up with this thread for a while, sounds like there are lots of fit mums to be out there, i feel quite lazy!

bumpwatch - i'm starting to get a bump - yay! finally moved into mat jeans at the weekend - they keep falling down at the moment, but my normal jeans were starting to dig in so the lesser of two evils i guess. thoughts have now started drifting to baby names but its just too difficult!!!

i am in easter holiday hell at the minute trying to keep DCs entertained with the rubbish weather and illness - DD has cough and cold and has lovingly passed it to me. i suppose i am lucky to have escaped anything so far this winter - sounds like there are some horrible bugs about.

i had an unexpected trip to hospital on sunday as had felt no movements for 2 days or so - thankfully little bean was happy in there just tucked away hiding somewhere. still have no idea of which way this one is lying but mostly feeling movements very low down. will see at next appointment.

the good news here is that the osteopath has almost fixed me! my back pain is much better - manageable at least - and only flares up when i have been overdoing it. i am really hoping that i caught it early and that it will get no worse.

hope you all have a good easter - have GTT booked for easter mon so not too much chocolate for me Sad
