I'm really sorry to hear that. Give it a couple of years and it will be routine on the NHS I'm sure but that doesn't help you now Hmm.

You asked for honest opinions so here goes - If I were in your position I would have the amnio in that case. I would worry otherwise. The 1:150 cut off is totally arbitrary. The cut off at FMC (where they do the Harmony) is 1:300 for example. The difference between 1:140 and 1:150 is negligible. Also that number takes into account your age and your age-related risk is much much lower than that. So I would say it's a worrying result given your age (whereas as an old bird my starting point was 1:65).

In most hospitals the risk of mc with an amnio is much lower than 1:100 and you can ask your hospital for theirs. The only scenario in which I wouldn't get an amnio is if I was 100% sure I could deal with a seriously ill and/or disabled child, and personally I would want more information first (I.e. have the amnio). If that detected a problem you can take it from there.

People on this thread have said they want the nuchal but not the amnio and that the odds will help them prepare for the worst. I think that's rubbish. The odds you have don't diagnose - they just make it more likely than before that there may be a problem. That might make you worry for the rest of the pregnancy (like my SIL did) for no reason at all. If you truly would keep any pregnancy either have no testing at all or a diagnostic test so you can prepare. The halfway house is not a great place to be.

Of course the odds are still vastly in your favour, but in your position I would take the tiny risk and have an amnio. Good luck with your decision - I know it's not easy.....

HettySunshine · 24/03/2013 10:30

I'm so sorry you're going through this frog. I'm sorry I don't have any advice but I wanted you to know I am thinking of you. Good luck with everything. X

frogchops · 24/03/2013 10:31

Thanks squid, I just wrote out a long reply to your pm too which got lost so thanks for that too. It's good to be able to weigh up people's opinions on what they would do and my mind changes every hour on what I want to do. DP has said he will support me with amnio If that's what I decide, but somehow I'd like it to be our decision and not mine. Maybe that's just me wanting to share the risk out! You're right about considering how I'd react to the news and in this case I think maybe I need to know. Subject to change in about half an hour!! ;-/

Eeeknumber3 · 24/03/2013 10:42

Morning all, we are officially snowed in in Buxton, all roads in and out closed...this has made me in a BAD mood. Particularly, since I have woken up with a migraine from hell. DH has tried to help and done 4 loads of washing, but now it is just piled up waiting to be dealt with. House is a like a bombhas gone off, as school was shut friday. Ah well, will go back to staring at 6 foot drift outside patio door...sorry bad morning...what can I do for this migraine someone? Thanks girls...

BinarySolo · 24/03/2013 11:31

Eeek try olbas oil on your forehead.

Frogchops, I think you need to talk further with your dh. It's not fair that he's letting it be solely your decision.

I'm one of the posters mentioned by squid that would have the nuchal but no further testing. I wouldn't have worried, I'd have done plenty of research into ds and what was available to me locally. Having discussed it with my dh we both new that we'd keep the baby no matter what and I actually felt very positive that we'd cope. If the amnio was risk free then it'd be a no brainer, but there is a risk of miscarriage or infection.

Everyone is different tho, so if you're going to spend the rest of your pregnancy fretting then it probably worth having the further testing done.

You probably also need to discuss what your decisions would be if the amnio came back as positive.

Good luck, Frog, I'm thinking of you.

Frog - are you 14 weeks? If so then at least you have a couple of weeks to decide what to do.... Does that help?

badguider · 24/03/2013 12:23

Migraine - paracetamol, head massage, lots if fluids and try to sleep it away.
I've had 3 since I got pg and have so far managed with the above (will take my drugs if I have to but would rather not).

frogchops · 24/03/2013 12:31

Yes I'm 14+3 today. Passed the cut of for the test done privately I think. I'm going to ask my mw on wed about another scan (but I'm guessing shell say I can't dates wise) or a scan for soft markers.

JammyTummy · 24/03/2013 13:08

I'm staying positive for frog- I believe you will be absolutely fine! I also reckon (without any scientific backing, so sorry if someone knows I'm wrong) that the odds they give you for mc in case you have the amnio are much higher than what they actually are- just trying to keep on the very very safe side in case someone decided they had bones to pick with them!
After writing that last bit I just had a nose at google and that's the first thing that came up:
miscarriage.about.com/od/pregnancyafterloss/f/amniocentesis.htm

It's not nhs or anything, but it might give you a more positive outlook!

andadietcoke · 24/03/2013 13:30

frogchops I ended up having to have counselling before the NT test with the lady at the hospital who does the counselling for couples who get a 'high' risk result. She said they call the couple in and go through their options - have you had this already or has it not been offered?

Anyway, one of things I asked was what would happen if they couldn't do the NT measurement again (this was the 2nd attempt). I asked about blood tests at 16w (no, because inaccurate for twins - but this would be an option for you presumably), and if they would look at the scan for soft markers (also no - she said they were far too unreliable and caused more anxiety than anything else). This was just one lady, at one hospital, but this was what I was told. If you haven't spoken to someone like this I strongly recommend trying to find someone at your local hospital who could provide the same.

jennimoo · 24/03/2013 14:36

frog chops - no advice: don't know what I'd do, but thinking of you.

My fluey bug is just a little congestion and cough now, but unfortunately seem to have pulled a muscle in the rib area, or something, and so trying not to cough as its such a horrible sharp pain. Anyone else had this? I guess it will stop when the cough does...

fl0b0t · 24/03/2013 14:54

Sorry to hear about the migrane eek. Having been sick for almost 9 weeks now, I'm sure you can imagine what my house looks like. Lets add to the sickness a dose of "the smell of nice things is now disgusting"- I can't bare the smell of washing up liquid for example. This weekend we blitzed the downstairs for the first time since I started being sick. Wore me out but was worth it. Only looks half like a sh~*thole now..... then we had friends over and made an experimental dinner......
On the plus side, my house is full of dessert- leftover eclairs from husband impulse buy one evening, leftover pear and almond cake from last night, plus lemon tart brought over by guests and not consumed.

I've gone back to bed after accompanying husband on a run (I rode my bike) and then chopping half the front hedge (too cold to finish). Might send husband downstairs for an eclair....

Readytosettle · 24/03/2013 15:56

Been catching up on the weeks TV....basically just a whole raft of baby programmes thanks to BBC3's baby season.

Did anyone see the one about multiples? How on earth do you make it through a whole pregnancy without knowing? Let alone one where you've got triplets inside you! Absolutely crazy, but they all came out fine....sort of puts all this worrying into perspective!

Keepsmilingsunshine · 24/03/2013 16:42

No advice frog but just wanted to add my support.

I thought I was well past the extreme tiredness but the last few days have been horrendous. I was asleep by 7.30 last night around 9pm the night before and today I've had a little nap to keep me going.

ION: no bump (although lots of extra fat) and no movements yet, sometimes wonder if I'm actually pregnant! I've got my 16 week appointment on Tuesday so keeping my fingers crossed that I'll hear the heat beat.

Dorita75 · 24/03/2013 17:08

Eek I second the massage, I swear it helped rid me of mine the other week, massaged the back of my neck and shoulders, bottom back of head where it's bumpy and temples. Also a cold wet flannel on my forhead and lying in a quiet room if you can.

Keepsmiling know what you mean! I've had the odd night, like Comic Relief night when I stayed up gone 10pm (usual 8pm bedtime) and thought I was over tiredness but I had to go bed even earlier the next night...

flobot I sympathise with the shithole house, same here!! I had a burst of energy this morning and cleaned the bathroom, first time in about 6 weeks....DP's turn next time Smile

Hope everyone okay with this cold spell, just think of how warm we'll be in summer with our bumps!!!

BinarySolo · 24/03/2013 18:23

By the way, those chocolate hot cross buns from m&s are well yummy.

That is all.

OP posts:
Squidwoman · 24/03/2013 18:27

Yes second bloods at 16 weeks will help and also if you don't have amnio the 20 week scan shows up physical problems if they are there/reassures if they are not.

Creamtea1 · 24/03/2013 18:43

binary of vital importance - have the m&s choc hot cross buns got orange peel in them?? I have been eyeing them for a while but anything with candied peel in makes me hurl, in it out of preg, so so far have just stuck to the apple and cinnamon ones

LexyMa · 24/03/2013 20:31

I am exhausted today - we had my friend from work, her DH and their two boys round and they played with DS nicely but boisterously... It was knackering just watching them. I also spent the hour before they got here setting up a massive train layout in the dining room and a farm/safari in DS' bedroom. All the crawling around left me very stiff. Presently nursing a glass of very nice red Wine and debating a Timothy Dalton Bond film vs a an episode or two of Lie To Me on Netflix... I think given the time it will have to be Lie To Me.

Yesterday I sorted out all the maternity clothes which have come back round to me from my 'mummy circle'. We've all had children in a nice succession, so in January (because everyone knew we were trying) I got two suitcases of clothes and a storage box with newborn bodysuits, maternity pads, TENS, nipple shields (etc. etc.). There is such a massive amount of clothes nobody could wear it all, some things are too large a size to start with, others I know have been going round for nearly 7 years and are a bit tired. I put in things when I was pg the first time, and it's nice to see 'old friends' again - I had some great colourful tops from asos, cheap materials but they don't lose their shape and they have (sort of) fashionable styling like pussy bow ties and neckline embellishment. I also bought two bodycon maternity dresses back then - don't know if I'll be brave enough to wear them this time! I have at least three smart ish maternity trousers ready ironed (by DH) now for work, and quite a few dresses which I can cardigan 'down' or smart jacket 'up'. There was even a couple of fabulous maxi dresses in the bag, which is ironic as this is the one summer in ages that we don't seem to have any weddings to attend!!

GirlWithTheYellowHat · 24/03/2013 20:39

Not read the thread in a few days but just wanted to warn those of you who watch One Born Every Minute that this weeks is set to be a sad tear jerker so might want to give it a miss. I think I will, to hormonal

JammyTummy · 24/03/2013 20:45

I just had a definite kick! In fact, there was what I thought was 'hmmm? A kick?!' and then another one came straight after! Very exciting!

PurplePoppySeed · 24/03/2013 20:47

Been so busy at work I haven't been able to keep up with the thread. Just managed to read up and I'm now craving mcflurry! I've also finally started to get a bump, but just feel fat compared to friends and their perfect bumps!
I was also drinking actimel, worked at first, but now I think it's giving me the squits! Maybe anyone still bunged up should give it a go :) Glad a few others are having stich type pains, I've been worrying as always! Migraines - mine have resurfaced since being pregnant and paracetamol just doesn't cut it, nothing helps me like sleeping it off!

Frogs - so sorry to hear or your dilemma, it sounds like you are handling it amazingly Thanks what you decide to do is a totally personal decision - thinking of you.

Wincher · 24/03/2013 21:05

Evening all! I am getting ligament type pains when I stand up from sitting on the sofa - v annoying. Choc hot cross buns sound nice. I am a bit off hot cross buns this year because of eating them on too many mornings I felt rough! Have bought some anyway for holy week.

I have my 16 week appointment on Tuesday too - really hoping o hear the heartbeat for reassurance.

Whyriskit · 24/03/2013 21:31

creamtea - made the jam & coconut sponge with DS2 and it was great. My mum asked for the recipe! Made it on Friday and none left my sat.
ION I am soooo itchy, especially my feet and nothing seems to help. Horrible!
