Has anyone here tried swimming? I know that might sound mad, but I love swimming and was doing a km every week pre-sicknesspregnancy and I've really missed it. I want to go for a gentle float about, but have no idea how it will make me feel. I won't push myself, I just want to try it! No good aquanatal where I live (8am on a saturday? No thanks!) and I fancy a swim!

LexyMa · 18/03/2013 16:34

Eeek I mentioned my lack of pelvic floor to the mw today, she said just do the exercises. No magic cure. Ho hum.

Heard a lovely little heartbeat on the doppler and the baby was also kicking and moving around (not that I could feel a thing) so that was reassuring. I didn't mention I'd just been skiing for a week and mainlined hot chocolate and had some blue cheese, rare meat, a half glass of wine most nights

Also considering camping, but in June, in France, in a pre-erected tent. So not really camping, I know...!!

Manoodledo · 18/03/2013 16:35

I'm 16 weeks today and was just thinking that I actually feel almost normal today, then I saw your post Creamtea! So I won't think this is it just yet perhaps, but I'm getting there, phew. Hopefully everyone else will be in the next wee while too.

Looking out the window at the snow I'm shivering at the very idea of camping. Surely that must get better in the next wee while too. Our holiday this year wiil be at Easter. Going to Copenhagen. As a masisve fan of Borgen and other scandi dramas, am very excited. Unfortunately, they're on the same latitude as us here in NE Scotland, so it'll probably be baltic. We had to abandon our other holiday plans once we discovered I was pregnant as it would've been a bit late on to fly. However, that wasn't much better weather-wise - was to Iceland!

fl0b0t · 18/03/2013 16:47

Manoodle Iceland is awesome!! Save that holiday and do it sometime, it will be worth it!

we're not getting a holiday this year- just going to wedddings!

Belvedere · 18/03/2013 16:49

Flo - My midwives really encourage swimming, so much so thats its free when I show my maternity card in my area. Ive been a couple of times and did my normal lengths and it was really nice. I dont think there is anything to worry about :)

Manoodledo · 18/03/2013 16:56

Cool flo. Actually DH is going there on a conference soon Envy. We will definitely do it sometime. Feels like it might be a while before we venture on holiday with three though!

astroming · 18/03/2013 17:03

My midwife also said swimming was an excellent exercise during pregnancy as i swim often and to keep it up but that after 20 weeks to paddle with your legs instead of kicking out like in breaststroke. She said this is because your pelvis and ligaments are prone to loosening etc after this time and it could poss lead to SPD.

Have no idea if this is the case or not but see how it could be.

BinarySolo · 18/03/2013 17:08

I'm do glad I'm not the only one to be slightly incontinent. I mentioned it to my doctor after the birth of ds and she said not much point in doing anything as I intended in having more kids! Grr!

Maybe I should do yoga, but I have tendinitis in my wrists (which started when ds was about 4 months) so it's painful to put weight on them. I'm currently using a powerball to try to fix the tendinitis since I don't want any more steroid injections.

belvedere when did you get your maternity card?! Do you mean the prescription one?

JammyTummy · 18/03/2013 17:28

Hi all! Feels like been away for ages! So good to read everybody's scan news!
Just doing my pelvic exercises here... Otherwise I will never do them! Got my scan date, it's on the 22nd of April! Ahhh it is SO long away! I'll be 21 weeks by then.
My bump seems literally to have popped one day last week! It just suddenly appeared! I thought it was horrific bloat but it never went away, I look like a proper preggo now!

Creamtea1 · 18/03/2013 17:46

jammy that's 3 of us on the 22nd now :) me and binary also

kipsonline · 18/03/2013 17:50

I've been enjoying a weekly swim flo, feels lovely to be weightless and I think that will only get more so!

badguider am v jealous on the camper van purchase. We were literally going shopping for one the w /e after we found out about out 'bonus' baby, now put on hold as can't imagine squeezing 3 DC in.... Ho hummm... We are camping for 3 long weekends though early summer, our 2 boys love it too!

Hope scans and boss conversations went well, I've been telling my uni students this week and they have been quite sweet (well, compared to hideous boss and MIL reactions!!!)

My midwife appt is this weds then my 20wk scan is 9 April. Is that one if the earlier ones? I'll take part in your research creamtea I wasn't going to find out gender (haven't before) but DH has said he would like to this time as he thinks it might help him bond with the 'surprise' new baby and so anything that helps that would be great! I am worried about insensitive comments if 3rd boy though... Will ask about heartbeat on weds following the 'guess the gender' guidance!

BinarySolo · 18/03/2013 18:26

Oh what's the heartbeat thing with guess the gender? I must have missed that! Apparently a lot of place won't try for the heartbeat until 20 weeks as its so tricky so can cause unnecessary worry.

I had my 16 week appointment last week (nearly 2weeks early as I was being sick a lot) and the mw found the heartbeat almost straight away.

OP posts:
Creamtea1 · 18/03/2013 18:53

Ooh great kips I am the same as you - 2 boys already - dont think am going to find out but gender but doesn't stop me analysing old wives tails etc! With you on the insensitive 3rd boy comments, has started already..
binary they say for heartbeat that fetal heart rate above 140 bpm means a girl, and lower than 140 means a boy. So I wonder what 140 exactly means!

Dorita75 · 18/03/2013 19:42

How?s your head frogchops? I had a bad migraine a week ago that kept me in bed for a day, cold, wet flannel on my forehead helped. If mine return I?m seriously considering acupuncture, it worked when I had hormonal migraines in the past.

It?s a year of weddings for us too flobot! Maybe a small hol in between family 100th birthday one weekend and a wedding the weekend after, both down south and we?re in Liverpool so not worth coming back in between.

Has anyone done the needle/wedding ring and thread thing to guess the baby?s gender? My friend is 7 months pregnant and knows she?s having a girl so she dangled her wedding ring on a thread over her stomach and it started turning in a circle (girl), did it on me and it was swinging side to side (boy). My mum?s done it on me, I?ve done it myself with a sewing needle and each time it swings!

Daisy299 · 18/03/2013 19:49

Just checking in - been absent for a while as we're desperately trying to keep up with work.

Am now 14+5 and have had three scans. At the NHS 12 week scan (actually 13+5) the sonographer couldn't find the Nuchal fold and pushed so hard she bruised me Shock
Ended up going back to the private clinic at 13+6 and the sonographer there found it right away. Also checked all organs including the brain, liver and heart valves and we saw the spine and ribs vividly which was quite magical.

No movement yet although have an occasional odd stabby sensation. I assume that's wind Confused

Good luck everyone!

Belvedere · 18/03/2013 20:12

Flo - yes I just show my prescription card thingy and get in free to any council run pools. Check with your midwife but it works in Bristol :)

juniper9 · 18/03/2013 20:19

Had my scan today and baby looks happy and healthy. Was asleep to start with, but objected to being woken up! Started kicking and punching me. Great to know I have a little bugger inside of me!

Nuchal probability came out as 1:9000 which is fairly low risk! Now just have to wait until Wed for slapped cheek blood results.

jennimoo · 19/03/2013 06:45

Congrats on scans!

I'm feeling slightly better this morning as slept more than coughed last night! We've gone for it and gone on our (fairly local) holiday, so lots for DH and DD to do while I rest up.

Dr checked me out and as expected nothing she could do. Did check baby's heartbeat though but I wasn't too worried as got some huge kicks, which depending which direction can feel a little painful, so could be what you're feeling daisy.

Mentioned the 'something stick in the throat' thing to the dr and got prescription for massive bottle of gaviscon, and it's worked! Good job as was making me cough and gag yesterday.

And my baby's. heart rate was 150, and will be finding out if its a girl in 3 weeks

MeanMrsMustard · 19/03/2013 07:22

Morning!
It's good to see another happy scan result. Were you the last Juniper?
I bought an angelsounds Doppler at the weekend, which arrived yesterday. I was uncertain whether to keep it or send it back, as it is definately a slippery slope towards obsession and panic! However, DH saw it and wanted to use it. It seems even a gadget that looks like a Barbie accessory is too much to resist. the gel hasn't arrived yet, so we improvised with some water based cleanser gel that seemed to do the trick. After several attempts we found my pulse, and a bit later something that was beating 150bpm ish. It was in the right position to be the baby (towards my lhs, above hairline) so I think it was the right thing! I'm going to try again with the proper gel and some better head phones.
Who else has a Doppler. Would you mind sharing your experiences?

I used to love camping as a kid, but DH hates the idea. I'm going to try and convert him, as I think it's an essential childhood experience. I'm sure the best ill achieve is a pre erected tent in a warm bit of France, and maybe a few nights in the back garden but that's a start!
We are off to the Caribbean in 10 days for our last indulgent baby free hol. We booked it before I was pregnant but the timing is quite good. I am going to read a lot and swim a lot. I can't wait!

I hope those of you feeling crappy start to get some relief. My sickness is slight and occasional now at 17 weeks. I do have a cold I just can't shake off though!

HettySunshine · 19/03/2013 08:15

Congratulations Juniper. Is that all the scans done now?

My 20 week scan is ages away, not until 26 April. My 16 week app is on 8 April though so that'll come round quickly I guess. Will the midwife definitely listen to the heartbeat or does that vary depending on area?

ION this morning I have a bump which I can see when standing face on in the mirror. And it's there in the morning - always big by bedtime. I wonder if I will finally start believing this is definitely real soon?! Smile

KamikazeeKid · 19/03/2013 08:27

Oo get some ky jelly cheaper than ultrasound gel and works just as good for dopplers!

Sounds like you fiund bubs. Always makes me jump as baby kicks when you have the volume on full blare. Remember baby has plenty of room to escape away from ear shot but a little jiggling or soft drink usually perks them up!

Sunshine200 · 19/03/2013 08:35

Hi all, just discovered this thread. I'm due on 22 Sep, so looks like that's 4 of us. No movements yet, I have a bump but don't think that's much to do with the actual baby! Have to tell work this week - eeek.

jennimoo · 19/03/2013 08:49

Hi sunshine!

My dr used ky jelly yesterday with the doppler,I noticed!

Readytosettle · 19/03/2013 08:56

I've been swimming flo....it's lovely, u get out of breath alot quicker but the baby must love being able to move around as it pleases, and am hoping the more I swim the more soothing the baby will find water in birth & beyond. I do go to virgin active tho, which is lovely & quiet...not sure I fancy the public pool much at the mo!
