I'll be using slings again this time - a close baby carrier for the first couple of months, then an Ellaroo mei tai after that. I found both really comfortable and with ds being prem and refluxy it meant I was able to do things with dd without him screaming because I'd laid him down Smile

RueDeWakening · 07/03/2013 17:37

Meant to add - there are loads of videos on YouTube which show how to tie a sling/wrap correctly, try watching some of them they really help.

SunnyL · 07/03/2013 17:57

A sling library is a brilliant idea. I spend a lot of time working in Kenya where the ladies just tie baby onto their back and crack on. Always admired the way they put baby on their back, bend over, jiggle their shawl about a bit before tying it on. It's like the babies have an innate ability to hang on.

On the converse my sister has given me her old pappouse and I can't even work out how to tie the fecker.

redwellybluewelly · 07/03/2013 18:20

I'm another baby carrier fan, I wouldn't use a baby bjorn or that typw but the close is brilliant (mine has done four babies) and I wear my toddler in something similar to an ergo.

Sling libraries are fab but I dont use wraps, each to their own.

So much to catch up on! Ive got tomorrow off but got toddler's nasry cold so kight just stay in bed. DH has also now decided he must be more ill, I despair sometimes.

I think they're great and gina they don't necessarily make baby reliant on it, it depends how you use it. Ds spent plenty of time on the floor by himself while I did chores around him, but found it really useful when you didn't want the hassle of a pushchair, e.g. when food shopping and I wanted to push a trolley, or if I was nipping in and out of shops. I had baby born but found it hurt my back as D's was quite big, now have a bebo (like an ergo) and can carry DC comfortably on my back for over half an hour (and he is size/weight of a 3-4 yr old). They are very personal though so good to try different types. Moby wraps seem v popular for newborns.

learnermummy · 07/03/2013 19:36

I'm definitely going to get a sling too, probably a stretchy newborn one. Like cycle I love the ergo but didn't get on with the newborn insert so it was only useful from about 4 months. Where have you seen them on offer ginauk84?
For newborn I'm torn between a Kari-me wrap style (although victoria sling lady seems to do the same thing much cheaper) or the close carrier, which seems to work along similar lines without the need to self tie.
Feeling much better today by the way, so hopefully just a brief 25 week thing!

redwellybluewelly · 07/03/2013 19:59

I vaguely remember hearing not so great things about Victoria sling lady but cannot remember what it was for the life of me so dont quote me but do do ypur research IYSWIM

I'm reading the sling advice with interest. Didn't use one really with DS- bought a cheaper one but never got on with it really. Am hoping to get one this time so that I'm more hands free when I need to be for DS.

Whoever mentioned Ashton and parsons powders(georgie?) I second that its worth stocking up on it when you see it available now as its like gold dust and is so effective when they're suffering from teething pains. I've heard that its in such short supply as drug dealers buy it up to mix so that it goes further- that's the reason the lady in boots told me they sometimes keep it behind the chemist counter and will only sell it to you one box at a time! We live in a crazy world!!!

AlohaMama · 07/03/2013 20:48

learner what didn't work about the ergo for newborns? I have a boba which is pretty much the same thing and I was hoping to use it with this one from newborn, now I'm wondering if I should get a sling or wrap...

pinkapples · 07/03/2013 21:14

We have a sling bought at the baby show as we plan on taking baby walking with the dogs (life goes on ho hum and with 7 dogs I should think so... Imagine me not walking them for a week) and cannot see me carting a pram practical I think not... It's a trek snuggle carrier that we can use from
Birth with an extra blanket for wrap around warmth obviously will just have to see how it goes x

learnermummy · 07/03/2013 22:45

Aloha, to use the ergo with a newborn you had to use this cushioned insert and it was just quite tricky to get the baby comfortable. It also had to be folded in a particular way iirc and was just a bit complicated, although this was a model from 6 years ago so perhaps the newer versions are different.

AlohaMama · 07/03/2013 23:12

Hmm the Boba seems a bit different in that you fold up the bottom to make it smaller. It seems straightforward so maybe I'll just wait and see if she likes it before buying anything else.

RueDeWakening · 08/03/2013 07:32

So...anyone else got leaky boobs yet? Have had to shove some tissue in my bra thanks to increasing levels of dampness - am off to buy some pads today I think! Don't really want to have to put up with achy leakyness for the next few months though.

Littlemissexpecting · 08/03/2013 07:37

No leaking yet!
Interesting to read about the slings/carriers. Unfortunately there isn't a sling meet near us.
Has anyone thought about a home birth?

SunnyL · 08/03/2013 07:40

7 dogs?? faints

pinkapples · 08/03/2013 08:14

Nope no leaking for me either

there hard work sometimes but wouldn't change them sunny Grin

I did think about a home birth but as its my first I do want the security of knowing someone is there if things go wrong love the idea of a water birth too but same applies unless I can have a water birth in hospital Grin

ginauk84 · 08/03/2013 08:15

learnermummy the ergo are on offer on their own website www.ergouk.co.uk/

No leaky boobs yet here.

I have been quite spotty throughout my pregnancy and it does get me down sometimes and they seem to scar for ages. Anyone got any tips for the spots themselves and for scarring? I do cleanse and moisturise with oil free moisturiser.

I have 3 dogs and they're all active breeds - 2 collies and a German shepherd so again there would be trouble if we didn't walk lol!

I am using a midwife unit so I did think about home birth as its not like they have much more at the midwife unit and was going to speak to them at our 25wk apt next week about it.

massagegirl · 08/03/2013 08:36

Thanks for that link gina, we were planning to get the ergo so a great saving!
Am considering home birth, a couple of friends have had really good experiences recently. I figure I'd rather try at home for as long as possible and then if its all too much have the security of knowing hospital is not too far away. We shall see!

learnermummy · 08/03/2013 09:46

Thanks Gina will have a look.

I'm having a home birth hopefully as I did with the last one and it was really nice to be at home. Need to buy a new pool yet though.

learnermummy · 08/03/2013 09:50

Wow that's a great saving Gina! and the infant inserts do seem to have changed design since I last had one. Will have to see if there are any videos showing how to use it to see if it looks better thanks before.

Olimoss · 08/03/2013 11:04

Morning all. Well, I attended midwife (I have the most lovely midwife, I am very lucky) today for my mini GTT after having drunk what felt like a bucketful of foul, foul Lucozade. Turns out I was expected yesterday. Am a doofus. So now I have to repeat next week. More Lucozade. YUCK.

All other check ups ok, baby literally lunching back at the doppler, I have blatantly gown a total crankypants kid.

Only one dog at my house but is a very whippets whippet, so well be competition for cuddles and soft surfaces. But she's great with the kids she's met so not too bothered bout it. They are the best thing for forcing you out to walk in any weather. Dogs, that is...

no leaky nipples here, thank goodness! I'm so confused re: slings and wraps. I might wait till baby is he and decide then. Mum is coming from Australia for 8 weeks (there will be a murder, I am sure) and I think more and more likely I'll need a Csection, so figure time to decide then.

Midwife booked me in for next check at 34 weeks, I was all like, 'oh that's ages away'. It's mid-April. Now getting a bit of The Fear.

Olimoss · 08/03/2013 11:07

Lunching = punching. Seriously, I am going to end up throwing this bloody iPad at the wall!!

cyclecamper · 08/03/2013 11:08

I would love a home birth, but it would freak the step sons out too much, especially the 16 year old with Aspergers. I have left the leaftlet around to keep them on their toes though Grin.

learner the new ergo insert is much better and doesn't need folding. I didn't get on with it very well as I am so short in the body (high waisted my grandmother called it which sounds much more elegantGrin). The modern ergos are better as well: their hoods are bigger and work better and the zip pocket is better.

Not the slightest amount of leakage here.

pinkapples · 08/03/2013 11:15

We've got a random mix a 17 yr old terrier who no longer walks with us just gets let out for a wee..

A collie x Great Dane huge so comes for a walk but doesn't run much as to big hehe

A corgi x, a pure bread boarder collie, a Cairn terrier (the only male in the pack Grin) a staffie x collie and a cockerspaniel x fox terrier so a right bunch and definitely wouldn't be worth not walking them GrinGrin

Very tired all the time at the moment but apart from that things are good...

I have the joy of the GTT next Tuesday so looking forward to that NOT

pinkbear82 · 08/03/2013 11:30

7 dogs... Goodness that must be fun! We have one mad springer spaniel here, still a pup at almost 9 months old and still requiring ALOT of training ( and DP too, not sure which needs it most actually)
Sad thing is coz dog pulls so much I can't walk him on my own, since bump has expanded my sense of balance ( which was debatable previously) is non existent now and everyone's worried I'll do more damage then good! Miss it tho as nothing beats a good walk with the dog to clear the head.

Just been to my amazing friends house who has given me box after box of baby things as her DS will be 1 shortly and her DD is 5 so she is done with it all. Slightly overwhelmed at the boxes in bubs room now!! Blush
