I have my booking appointment today and an so excited I woke at 5.00am! This is what I'm always like - Christmas, birthdays, holidays. Oh we'll, plenty of time to plan my questions. DP is asleep with his hand on my tummy Grin

Kittenkatzen · 08/02/2013 07:42

Lol at "Luke I am your father" Grin

Actually I had forgotten that my bf had christened the bump when we told her and we've been using that name on and off when we remember....she called it Nige, which sounds funny with our surname and is nicely unisex Smile

Kittenkatzen · 08/02/2013 07:43

Ooh and good luck for your booking today hetty Smile

Whyriskit · 08/02/2013 08:45

badguider I'm just outside Edinburgh but work in the centre. Went to yoga at mulberry house when pg with DSs - don't know if I can justify cost this time. Also did baby yoga with preg & parenting centre.

Whyriskit · 08/02/2013 08:59

Ooh, and I have a question! I'm normally fairly relaxed about food in pregnancy - unless the guidelines specifically say to avoid something (& even then I'll be flexible)
We're going out to a French restaurant on sat to celebrate fil's retirement. I've looked at the menu, and genuinely there's only one thing I can eat for a starter! Boring soup!
Anyway, there's game terrine which I would normally love but is terrine treated the same as pate for pregnancy?

Wincher · 08/02/2013 09:03

I'm afraid I'd count terrine as the same as pate, sorry! It will have the same listeria/liver issues. What else is on the starter menu? They now say you are allowed cold cured meats and fish if that helps. My midwife told me to avoid cold seafood such as prawns but I'm dubious about that one.

jennimoo · 08/02/2013 09:09

The latest guidance says cold seafood is ok, it just says it needs to be cooked. I was surprised how many changes there have been in the last few years. It seems to be much less strict!

I'm still avoiding raw / soft eggs at the mo but it does seem to be a very low risk! And no alcohol here, although would have small amount after these first few weeks, but for now the thought makes me want to puke... DH has made his first batch of homebrew and is drinking more often as a result. The smell makes me feel sick!

jennimoo · 08/02/2013 09:10

Here's the page I refer to wren I'm not sure:
www.nhs.uk/Conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx

Whyriskit · 08/02/2013 09:15

Menu: mackerel pate, boudin noir (might be ok), terrine, salad of raclette & parma ham, moules (fine, but make me boak at the moment!)...and cream of tomato soup!

jennimoo · 08/02/2013 09:17

I think Parma ham is ok.

Whyriskit · 08/02/2013 09:31

Yes, with that one it's the cheese, not the ham. Thanks for the list Jenni, things have changed in 3 years!

HettySunshine · 08/02/2013 09:33

What's boudin noir?

Eeeknumber3 · 08/02/2013 09:39

Good morning ladies. Today I am mainly channelling my inner monkey, I am on banana number 2!

Eeeknumber3 · 08/02/2013 09:41

hetty I just enquired of mr google about boudin noir, it is a 'dark hued blood sausage', a bit like an upmarket black pudding...bleurgh (small bit of bile escapes into my mouth)

Eeeknumber3 · 08/02/2013 09:49

I am avoiding nuts, particularly peanuts in large amounts as my mum is severely anaphylactic with all nuts (except almonds bizzarely). From eating them or coming into contact with them she has around 20 minutes till her throat starts to close up and heart goes into arrhythmia, we've had lots of near misses, it's scary. I'm sure I'm over cautious with this, but it's been a terrifying thing for us all to live with. Strangely enough, and we'll never know if it was a factor, my nana and grandad had a pub when she was pregnant with my mum and she said she lived on the strips of kp peanuts behind the bar...

Kilkers · 08/02/2013 09:56

Whyriskit would the mackeral pate be ok? I think the risk with most pates is not only the Vitamin A thing but also because the livers are usually cooked pink (listeria blah blah blah). If it's made with fish it would definately be made fresh and fully cooked? I think fish pate is more like a mousse usually anyway.

Hope your booking in goes well today hetty. I had my appointment yesterday which went brilliantly. The MW is soooo lovely and is going to be a good giggle I think. She was very thorough and answered all my questions patiently. She even managed to get blood out of my arm first time so I didn't have to have it taken from the back of my hand which is what usually happens (I have stupid awkward veins!). The MW I had when I had my MC was nice but very old school and just a little bit scary.

Can't believe I won't see her again until I'm 16 weeks, it seems like an age away. I've just got to try and not go totally bonkers waiting for my 12 week scan! I've thought about a private one but I'm going to try and stick it out.

Eeeknumber3 · 08/02/2013 09:57

Having said all that I will eat them in things and occasionally, as I did with ds1 and dd1, as I intuitively feel avoiding them completely is prob not good either!

Manoodledo · 08/02/2013 10:00

DH has just texted me randomly from the airport (on his way to a conference) to say he doesn't want us to have the nuchal scan. I don't know what to think now!

Eeeknumber3 · 08/02/2013 10:22

Oh noodle what is his rationale? Will you be able to talk about it later on? Fortunately, DH and I are in agreement about this, we will have the nuchal and we have always agreed that we could not cope with a child with downs (sorry if that offends, but we have our reasons). If we didn't agree, it would be a real issue for me, really feel for you x

Manoodledo · 08/02/2013 10:29

Don't know eek, just texted him back to ask and say we'll talk about it when he gets back. I can totally understand why people wouldn't go ahead with having a child with downs though.

jm233 · 08/02/2013 11:07

If one more person tells me to eat a ginger biscuit I'm going to lose the plot! Feel sick? Oh! Have a ginger biscuit, or some ginger ale!
... Wow! What a great brand new idea that no one else had yet suggested!

Sorry... Feeling ratty today. Sick and sad and full of gas.

Eeeknumber3 · 08/02/2013 11:09

Oh noodle sorry, will be a long day.
I've got to go for a blinkin blood test now to see if I have immunity to slapped cheek syndrome!! Eh?! DS1 best mate mum just rang to say his best friend has slapped cheek and they've been together all time and seemingly is doing rounds at school. Sure Ds1 has some of symptoms, and it's very contagious. So, have spent morning on phone to docs and midwife, who have panicked me as it is dangerous for pg women and can cause spontaneous m/c. FFS.

LexyMa · 08/02/2013 11:18

It's not really an ideal topic for a text message, is it! Especially written in such a fait accompli sort of way (your DH's message I mean).

We are having the nuchal test, because we feel that we would not be able to deal with a severely disabled child, in the sense that we both feel that we are not 'good enough' to bear that responsibility and have massive admiration for those who could. For DH as far as I know the consideration ends there, but in my slightly more searching moments thinking about this, I think the issue is that the diagnostic tests (especially those in the 20w scan) seem to be unable to tell you how severe the condition is - Cystic Fibrosis, for example. So I know that there are children with (e.g.) Downs who have fantastic quality of life and bring so much joy to those around them - e.g. that lovely story of the mother of the boy in the M&S Christmas ad. But for others it doesn't turn out that way. Sorry if any of that is rude or insensitive - it's not meant to be!!

fl0b0t · 08/02/2013 11:24

Just catching up with everything (pate, Luke, bump names and nuchals)

At the moment, bump name changes each week (not that it's a bump yet, having lost over 3.5kg :( )

I have the "I'm expecting!" app on my phone which tells me each week what (middle class) fruit my baby is the same size as. So:
Week 5: Sesame seed-foetus
Week6: Pea-foetus
Week 7: (current): Blueberry-foetus
Week 8: Raspberry-foetus
Week9: cherry-foetus
Week 10: kumquat-foetus (told you it was middle class!)
week 11: fig-foetus
Week 12: lime-foetus
And so on.....

I'm also trying out MY surname on it, as baby will have my husbands surname (as do I)..... so Foetus has a full name- starting with a fruit and ending in my surname! :D

GirlWithTheYellowHat · 08/02/2013 11:47

Just read your link jenni and I was convinced we couldn't eat Parma ham. I didn't touch it during my first pregnancy and looked at it longingly in sainsburys yesterday!!
