I weighed myself last night for the first time since being weighed by the GP at 5 weeks and found I've actually lost 3kg so far. And that's despite not actually vomiting with the ms - the constant nausea just puts me off eating unless I really have to. Hadn't actually anticipated losing weight in pregnancy!

I've never done antenatal classes with any of my pregnancies; I learn far better from books & the internet at my own pace than in a group situation, and don't really feel comfortable socialising with people where the only thing we have in common is that we're pregnant/had babies at the same time. An online forum is one thing, but in person I need there to be something more in common - and to be frank, once LO is here, if I've been stuck at home with a baby all week then when I make the effort to go out and meet people I really don't want to be talking babies all the time! I have the same problem at the school gates; I have very little in common with most of the mothers there, who've all formed their own little cliques. We can't just be having a good old bitch about the council's latest fuck-ups over asbestos removal at the new school site all the time.

Niktasha · 04/01/2013 13:45

Just to take myself off the list. Misacrried yesterday. Good luck to you all in July.

Hey all, I finally had my 12week scan this week and it turns out I am nearly 15 weeks so was too late for the nuchal test etc. (I think if it hadn't been for the xmas holiday it would've been fine). I'm very confused by the dates as my end-of-September LMP was totally normal but according to this new info I was already pg.

So I am now due at the very end of June, do I move to the other thread?

Re NCT I didn't do it with DD but wish I had in a way. We are very isolated and don't know anybody with kids. I decided to do Waterbabies instead (preferred the idea of having something to 'do') and when I went to the class all the other parents were from the same NCT group and a bit cliquey :(

I did go to a BF group which was brilliant but that was pretty much the only time I left the house during my mat leave.

I don't want it to be the same this time.

elliejjtiny · 04/01/2013 16:02

So sorry niktasha. I have been where you are and it is awful but it does get better. As my friend says, time is a good after-sun.

Quinandthem · 04/01/2013 16:13

Mulled Wine glad the scan went well.

turns out that myself and cotton as also end of June but we're not moving - i'm too scared to go to the other thread... so stay here with us.

Cheeseandbread · 04/01/2013 16:20

So sorry Niktasha

Thanks for advice on how to tell work. Think I might go with the ripping the plaster off method guava.

AmaDablam · 04/01/2013 16:29

So sorry Niktasha hope you are getting lots of support from those around you.

Cutandstick · 04/01/2013 16:38

So sorry Nitasha I hope you're DP is bing supportive, good luck in the future x

cotton I also paid an exorbitant amount of money last night to confirm my NCT classes. Only consistent piece of advice I had from friends and relations was go to NCT. Also we haven't lived in the ill age we're in very long, and I know 2 neighbours and 1 other person... So it's an attempt to not be a billy-no-mates too! Wink

On bras, two pages ago... So I can't remember who said it - try debenhams sale - go for a bra bargain, and everything was reduced a bit as well the sale rail. I've gone from a dd to a ff already Blush I am having problem with the underwires and my arm pit - never had that before, and the wire free one seem super tight round the chest.

guava and cheese I have done NO planning as yet... And in a year group I've not done before... Bye bye weekend.....

AmaDablam · 04/01/2013 16:48

Slouching it was me that mentioned itchy nipples a while back (although someone else may have done so more recently). I've been moisturising them daily with E45 lotion which has helped a bit, but now my whole skin is like a desert so I've got some E45 emollient bath oil which I intend to have a good soak in this evening.

Cheese re. telling work I was really worried, and took the cop-out route in the end and did it in an email to my manager and her boss. As it happened I was really p'd off with them about something else at the time, so it seemed appropriate to keep the tone very formal, and I admit it was a bit of a two fingers up "well I'm outa here soon" kind of thing. I just basically stated the facts and asked that they keep it to themselves until after my scan. As it turned out they were as nice as I could have expected about it, although we've only talked about it terms of practicalities for work, neither being the congratulatory type. I'm actually looking forward to telling everyone else, all being well at the end of next week - hopefully there will be great excitement as despite being an all female team there hasn't been a pregnancy for a good 5 years.

Re NCT classes I am seriously thinking of doing them, especially after the good feedback several of you ladies have given. I don't have any local friends (nearest is a 20 min drive away) and am really worried about feeling isolated after the baby is born and DH goes back to work. I also think I would benefit from that sort of group learning situation and feel pretty clueless, not to mention a little bit scared as a first timer. I may try the NHS ones too, but assuming they will be held at the hospital where I am booked to give birth, this may not be so good on the making local friends front as it's half an hour away and in a different county.

Hope everyone's had a good day. I managed to wangle working from home, which is always a bonus on a Friday! Grin

Oh and a little tip for those who like to get creative in the kitchen - DH just informed me that on the BBC Good Food website they have a link to "pregnancy friendly" recipes - excellent idea!

esme80 · 04/01/2013 17:08

So sorry Niktasha

I went to a NHS antenatal class at a local maternity centre. Was only one day so didnt really get to know other mothers but found the information quite helpfull, made me a lot more rekaxed about the birth actually. Have met people at baby groups and toddler singing groups at the library. So there are alternatives to paying for NCT classes.

guavas my midwife asked me during my booking in appointment if I was interested in antenatal class, and signed me up.

I also love OBEM! Cry every time the baby is born...

Camb79 · 04/01/2013 18:13

Hi,

11 weeks now, but our hospital still hasn't given us a scan date. Also, cramping quite a bit this week - anyone else having cramps at this stage. So glad to hear yours were ok Supershiv.

AmaDablam · 04/01/2013 18:20

Oh forgot to say arkady that I weighed myself today and have lost a similar amount since my booking in appointment on 11th Dec when I was 8 weeks pg. I've only actually been sick three times in total, but like you I've been very nauseous which has affected my eating habits. I was still surprised though as when I do feel like eating it is nearly always the unhealthiest things going (plus my ever expanding boobs must weigh at least half a tonne each)! I'm glad someone else has had the same experience as I was starting to feel a bit paranoid about it - surely that growing baby should weigh something?!

BooStar · 04/01/2013 19:33

Condolences here too niktasha Sad

Re NCT - we did it as we were new to the area & didn't know anyone. Our group was a bit dispersed geographically & although I woul definitely do it again as I love my fellow NCTers, we don't see each other that often and I hang out with mums I met through a surestart post-natal group & through a surestart 'bumps to 15 months' group. Though with the recent cuts I'm not sure how many of these services have survived...
We did the evening classes and although it was a bit of a commitment I actually really enjoyed the fact that for 2 hours a week we could completely focus on the fact that we were pregnant and reflect on it away from the hustle of everyday life! We also had a great teacher who covered loads of useful stuff but I hear that that can be a bit hit & miss geographically.
With regard to breastfeeding - the nct sessions were ok but it was hard to really take it all in and imagine how it was going to be and I found the 'bosom pals' support groups more helpful once I'd had DS. However, I guess if I hadn't had access to those I would have been able to call on the NCT bf after support.
In short, I found it really worthwhile & its given me lifelong friends but I also formed just as close friends through other 'free' groups too.

ArkadyRose · 04/01/2013 19:37

At 11 weeks the fetus itself only weighs about 7-8 grams - the whole amniotic sac + placenta is less than the weight of a small bag of sugar, so is very little of your overall body weight. Although most women put on 25-35lb in weight on average in pregnancy, most of that is in the third trimester. You probably put on more weight from growing boobs than from baby in the first trimester! Grin

Supershiv1 · 04/01/2013 19:58

Niktasha so sorry to hear your news xxx

wifey6 · 04/01/2013 20:20

Niktasha...so incredibly sorry for your loss. Be gentle with yourself during this time. Thoughts & prayers are with you.

Guavasforbreakfast · 04/01/2013 20:22

Really sorry niktasha Sad Hope everyone takes good care of you the next few weeks.

All the advice on antenatal classes is great, think I'll just do the nhs one and join groups after as the nct ones are quite far from me.

Scan excitement today has made me get way ahead of myself, the travel system I've had my eye on was nearly half price in M&P today... went to have a look after the hospital and bought it Blush I figure next big sale is summer and baby might be here before I see an offer that good again. Feel a bit silly with a pushchair in my hallway when I don't even have a proper bump!!!

Have also booked a holiday for April as I've realised we'll never again go away without kids...

Expensive day.

photographerlady · 04/01/2013 21:27

I have maybe a silly question. Now that I'm over 12 weeks and can sort of stop pre-nat vitamins but have bucketloads left so I take it there is no harm in polishing them off right?

Mizar · 04/01/2013 21:29

Niktasha, so sorry to hear your news - truly sucks Sad

Thanks to everyone who's chipped in re NCT. I feel less panicked after reading all the posts. I'll probably go for the weekend one - simply because my job's hours are really unpredictable as are DH's, and I am not sure I can cope with his level of grumpiness if I pull him out of work and he finds it boring. We are totally clueless, so hopefully will learn something!

For those with itchiness - I've found the Aloe Body Butter from Body Shop has helped, although have only had to use it once so far.

As for weight... Not being the slimmest normally, I am worried about the weight gain. So far I seem to be exactly the same weight, but there is definitely a mass migration of fat going on towards my abdomen. Keeping my belly in is proving more of a challenge by the day!

Thinkingof4 · 04/01/2013 21:42

niktasha so sorry to hear about your loss

photographer definitely no harm in continuing prenatal supps, mine have iron and vitamin d as well as folic acid which would no doubt become depleted during pregnancy if I didn't take them so I'm going to continue all the way through.

Re NHS antenatal classes, your midwife should be able to tell you what's available. I never went to nct as nothing very local to me and my local NHS ones were fine. Only went first time round though!

Btw I'm another closet nhs worker but not in maternity directly, I probably know more about having babies having had 3 than from what I would learn from work!!

Thinkingof4 · 04/01/2013 21:44

Actually I think we are supposed to take vitamin d all the way through pregnancy now ( has changed since my last baby)

Supershiv1 · 04/01/2013 21:52

guavasforbreakfast Ooooh where you going?
