Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Hi everyone and thanks for the stretchmark tips pinkapples, Alohamama, AmI and MrsBri, we are going for a daily dose of Bio oil :)

peaceful I found this article based on research by Nicolaides at King's College Hospital, London. Good news, if the nasal bone is present, then risk of Downs is thought to be lowered to one third of the level of the background risk. More info (and probably a better explanation!) can be found in the full article www.webmd.com/baby/news/20021217/fetal-nasal-bone-predicts-down-syndrome I know that this must be a worrying time for you and others waiting for results, hopefully this info helps alleviate your concerns a little.

We finally, got to hear baby's heartbeat today - 140BPM. For those going for 15-16 week appointments, the Midwife did say that the heartbeat can be difficult to detect at this stage and may depend on how baby is positioned, our baby kept trying to wriggle away again.

pinkapples · 18/12/2012 20:17

Ours was 140 to lexilexi not sure if that means a boy or a girl I guess we'll just have to wait it out midwife said ill get my 20 week scan appointment at 18weeks through the post so fingers crossed I won't haw to wait to much longer after that x

AmIGoingMad · 18/12/2012 21:59

Great that you got to hear little one's heartbeat lexi! Thanks for that link too!
I actually managed to sit and have food and watch a film with DH this evening for the first time in so long. It was really nice! Smile

olimoss · 19/12/2012 12:10

Just a quick hello from sunny Australia - great to hear all the news of scans and heartbeats.

I think my gut is definitely popping so now I can no longer suck it in - not the best look!

Hope you're not all freezing back there in the UK...

SunnyL · 19/12/2012 15:18

Managed to fall down the stairs last night and gave my husband a real fright. Sore bum and elbow and wounded pride. Was telling my colleague though who's friend did that and went into labour. So in 6 months time if you're desperate to get it out may I recommend falling down the stairs - like getting ketchup out of a glass bottle apparently.

redwellybluewelly · 19/12/2012 15:27

SunnyL - my friend tripped when we were out walking, baby arrived that night safe and sound and a few weeks early!

suzyrut · 19/12/2012 15:30

oooh nasty sunny glad you're ok...good tip though as I can't stand raspberry leaf tea! xx

AlohaMama · 19/12/2012 16:02

Oooh Sunny glad you're ok, hate falling down stairs, a bruised arse is no fun for anyone!!

Glad you're having fun in Oz olimoss. Tis somewhat sunny here, but it is winter in Hawaii so lots of rain too. Still, at this time of year I do miss snuggling up with a warm fire and a hot drink, and maybe even snow.

Thanks for the reminder lexi. I guess I might actually have to start putting the bio oil on rather than just leaving it in the drawer.

AmIGoingMad · 19/12/2012 16:10

Poor you sunny- glad that you're ok!

Olimoss its miserable and rainy here today so I'm very jealous of your nice weather!

All the best for tomorrow dreamy x

peacefuleasyfeeling · 19/12/2012 18:08

Good evening, everyone. Sunny, I hope you are OK. I've been slipping around the school playground on wet leaves today trying so hard not to go down butt first.
Thank you so much Suzy for your kind and supportive words, it really helps to hear the words of others who have walked a similar road before you. I'm relaxing about it now, I rang The FMC and The Harley Street Centre for Women and quizzed them about the Harmony test. They were great, and although they are chokka until the new year, just knowing that it's a possibility feels great. You do have to pay the full amont now, the trials are over; £400 for the test itself, and £180 for a Nuchal scan regardless of whether you've had one already (this is at the FMC). At the Harley Street Centre for Women, they charge £400 for the test, £220 for a scan and £36 for "bottling" (putting your blood into a bottle). For what it is worth, children are welcome to attend the appointment with you.
Anyway, keep well everyone!

dreamydays · 19/12/2012 18:17

Thanks for remembering AmI. Yes it's my amnio tomorrow morning. Feeling worried but we've made the decision to have it, so I also feel that whatever will happen, will happen.

peaceful I understand how you feel about a risk just over 300. In my last pregnancy the risk came back at that level, and the doctor pushed me to have an amnio. We were in Switzerland where apparently it's normal to have an amnio at that risk. Anyway after huge heartache we had it and the results eventually came back fine. We didn't have the cost issue to consider - £962 seems incredible for a simple procedure.

This time my risk came back at 1/206. I'm also 38 so was half-expecting it. To be honest I was relieved that it didn't come back at say 1/260 which would have given us a similar dilemma to you.

Good luck whatever you decide. I agree with everything suzy said. Also if you look at Wikipedia on amnios, that too says that actual risk levels are now thought to be a lot lower than generally given. For some reason the risk stats used to take account of voluntary terminations following amnios.

suzyrut · 19/12/2012 20:16

Hey dreamy hope everything goes well tomorrow will have everything crossed for you and a positive result. I don't imagine this will help at all but I wonder if age could account for the difference in risk levels alone. Whatever the reason it's crap crap crap having to go through the whole process. Do you know whether you'll get your results before Christmas?

peaceful no probs, grr about the money for the harmony test though, have you made any decisions? Xx

redwellybluewelly · 20/12/2012 10:47

Good luck today dreamy I hope all goes well

Ladies - can I say three words? pelvic floor exercises

Honestly, I thought I was doing them almost regularly enough but have a bit of a cold and well, I need to do more of them!

dreamydays · 20/12/2012 11:03

Thanks suzy and welly. Just home from hospital. It went as well as expected, and DH didn't faint at the needle (he did when I had one last pregnancy!). As you say suzy the doctor was clear that only my age has pushed up the risk - the nuchal result was v good and bloods not bad. He thinks it'll all be ok. Sadly results will take 2 weeks (am in France) - will try not to think about it til the new year.

AmIGoingMad · 20/12/2012 15:01

Dreamy glad it went well. Nice to hear that the doctor was so reassuring too. Take care now and try to have a nice Christmas- all's signs are positive x

Pelvic floor exercises- I know! I really need to do more as I've been finding out each time I'm sick. Sorry- tmi x

AlohaMama · 20/12/2012 15:57

Glad the appointment went well dreamy - hope you manage to relax over Christmas, and focus on the positive words of the Doctor.

Pelvic floor?? Do I have to. Up until now I couldn't do them as it just exacerbated feeling sick. Now I'm mostly feeling better I guess I've got no excuse. So tiresome to have to remember all the time...

Hope everyone is now feeling better and ready for Christmas!? I can't wait - ds is now 20 months so old enough to enjoy it (if not exactly understand what it's all about), his grandparents have just come to stay, and now I'm looking forward to feeling festive and eating all the lovely food!! once I've actually gone out and bought it all

suzyrut · 20/12/2012 17:09

Great to hear it went well dreamy hopefully despite the massive rush to Christmas you'll get a chance to put your feet up for a couple of days!

I hate plevic floor exercises...I can't help but make a face regardless of the literature telling you they can be done anywhere!

xx

Sarah2506 · 20/12/2012 20:01

I would like to strongly recommend NOT getting the norovirus! This has been an absolutely wretched week! When its just you the worry of dehydration is less, but I really worried about Bean after I hadn't kept even water down for 24 hours. But everything I read suggested that she would get everything she needed, to my detriment if need be, so this probably explains why I felt so much worse than I have in the past. Amusingly I still gained weight this week - life really does go on! Nothing fits now, when it did last week. Also finding the whole thing really quite uncomfortable - so aware of this pressure / weight in my lower abdomen now, only comfortable lying down on my side. Kind of get the feeling this isn't going to get any better any time soon!

AmIGoingMad · 20/12/2012 22:35

Sarah sorry to hear you've had that evil bug- it's horrendous isn't it!!! Good to hear that you're on the mend now x

Could I ask you ladies when sickness/ nausea stopped or at least eased off for you? I'm a little behind most of you and am still so fed up and am 13+2 today. When will it stop?! Hmm

Aloha- know what u mean about Christmas ( apart from the eating of lovely food as I'm not quite there yet unfortunately). My DS is 23 months and is much more aware this year. He keeps telling everyone ' darma dissmass bring chocat'- so cute! Smile

dreamydays · 21/12/2012 09:25

Thanks guys. Just had my 16 week appt. She did a v quick scan to check all ok after the amnio yesterday. It is, and it's a girl! Yay!

I have to keep resting which is a pain as all my family are arriving on Sun for Christmas - I hear the siren calls of the cooking and cleaning waiting to be done!

AmI I felt better by 13 weeks, then a lot better by 14/15 weeks. Haven't had any nausea at all in last few days and have loads more energy, but I still get tired easily. Hope you feel better in the next few days, in time for Christmas! xx

AmIGoingMad · 21/12/2012 11:14

Thanks dreamy- that's reassuring!

GREAT news about your scan too!!! How exciting! So happy for you! Make sure you rest up- family can help out with cooking and cleaning etc and will be happy to do so I'm sure! X

Sunbeam18 · 21/12/2012 12:17

That's fantastic, dreamy! I think you might be the first of our thread to know the gender!
I have some great news too - I got my nuchal combined test results yesterday and got risk of 1:8700. So relieved as knew my risk on age alone was 1:100.
Last day at work till 7 Jan too - yay!

DontmindifIdo · 21/12/2012 13:27

I had my 16 weeks appointment today, she listened to baby heart beat, sounds nice and strong. I've still got very low blood pressure (lower than last time) and she's said I need to be careful, drink lots, and has given me a letter for the train conductor that says I'm allowed to sit in first class if there's no seats in standard class. so some perks.

suzyrut · 21/12/2012 13:56

Brilliant news for you dreamy and sunbeam, and how exciting to know what you're having!

Had 16 week appointment yesterday and met my consultant (was induced for high bp in last pg) who seemed really nice and a junior doctor who wasn't sure whether he'd taken my blood pressure correctly (I think he was very nervous).

Yikes dontmind is there anything they can do to treat low bloodpressure/are there any implications for you/baby?

Anyone started thinking names yet?

AmIGoingMad · 21/12/2012 17:09

Great news sunbeam! So nice to get it before Christmas too! Makes me wonder why they put such emphasis on age in the first place too!

Don'tmind hope that your blood pressure gets sorted soon poor you.

Suzy- I was the same on DS1 with induction due to high blood pressure. Hopefully it'll be ok this time around for us both x
