So it would have to be on my mum's side, not my dad's for it to pass to me? That's a relief! And very interesting to know. I learn something every day.

But yes, it's all a theory, isn't it!

I just want at least one healthy baby, to be honest.

Thundernonk · 05/11/2012 21:26

It won't surprise you to learn nic that I'm pretty philosophical about it either way. Just interested in the genetics!

OP posts:
Thundernonk · 05/11/2012 21:28

Yeah nic, but only if we're talking fraternal twins. Identical is just chance.

OP posts:
MrsBri · 05/11/2012 21:28

The biologist in you?! :-)

There's pros and cons for twins. Mostly cons, I think, at the moment. But if it is then we would cope!

MrsBri · 05/11/2012 21:29

Our family twins are identical, not fraternal, as well. Aren't we a lucky family?!

Thundernonk · 05/11/2012 21:34

Ahhh how interesting. So yours is one of those not logical families! With identicals, they're not supposed to be hereditary at all (doesn't sound like that works with your lot eh), but if a woman has one set, she's much more likely to have another set.

Identicals won't be affected by age (not sure about height), because that relates to older women being more like to release more than one egg, which makes fraternal twins. Identicals come about by one egg and one sperm splitting.

MrsBri · 05/11/2012 21:41

Yep, nothing logical about my dad's side of the family!

All fascinating though.

peardrop2 · 05/11/2012 22:22

Oooooo exciting twin chat Grin

Frus poor you! I hope week 11&12 is an easiest ride with light at the end of the tunnel!!

MrsB I'm surprisingly good about the Doppler. DH only allows me to use it if I'm calm and have my head screwed on. We know that if we can't find it in the evening we will try again in the morning and I know that my bladder and bowels mostly bowels play a large part in shielding baby so I never let myself panic!

So here's my uterus update. We found HB just on the line where the top of your pants sit which means baby is now at the bottom of my tummy so it has moved about 1/3 thumb length and this explains why I can now cross my legs again!!

bringonthetrumpets · 06/11/2012 01:39

Haha, pear well done! You've found your fundus!

I have been resisting temptation to pull out my doppler on myself as I know it's really hard to find babies before 9 weeks and I don't want to freak myself out! I think I may try later this week though. My midwives are probably expecting me to experiment on myself so I'll have to still act very surprised and excited when we listen at a proper prenatal appointment :)

Oh lordy, I wouldn't know what to do with myself if we had twins. DH said he would go get the snip if there were two in there (thankfully we had a early scan at 6 wks and there is definitely only one). Two preschoolers and twin babies, makes me shudder to think of it.

MrsBri · 06/11/2012 07:04

You are very good about it...I think most people aren't that level headed about it, Peardrop :-)

Question for those suffering sickness. Do you tend to feel better if you're actually sick? I'm very rarely sick, but spend almost all day hovering just above the need to vomit. Would I get relief from being sick as it is so hard to concentrate on my work when all I can think about is if I'll be sick?

Is it scan day today, Pear? So exciting. Can't believe you're at 12 weeks already! I want 12 weeks too! :-)

FrustratedSycamoreBonks · 06/11/2012 07:25

Morning all. How are you all managing to stay up so late?

FrustratedSycamoreBonks · 06/11/2012 07:27

Yes mrs I get relief from being sick.

MrsBri · 06/11/2012 07:31

I alternate between sleeping early / all the time (at weekends only, sadly, ha ha!) and staying awake a bit later. Not sure why.

Wondering if I should start making myself sick then? May ease the relentless nausea if I do.

First morning of train queasiness today. No loos on Merseyrail, so just got to hold it in for now!

FrustratedSycamoreBonks · 06/11/2012 07:38

I do feel terrible immediately after being sick, hot and sweaty but it's preferable for some relief, but it does build back up again. I don't make myself sick, its more refusal to hold it in. I feel icky this morning, so I don't envy you on a train mrs

peardrop2 · 06/11/2012 09:48

Frus last night was the first night my body allowed me to stay up until 11 to watch my guilty pleasure made in Chelsea! OMG 12 weeks today and I slept through the night....ahhhhh it's amazing! I'm in the best mood ever! Please may this continue all week!

MrsBri I really feel for you and the ms :-( Pretzels seem to be popular on other threads to help. I'm only restricted with the Doppler because DH will only let me use it if I'm acting normal sane, he's really strict about it. If I go doolally he bans me because he doesnt like me worrying and I can't use it myself because I never find it on my own but somehow he gets it right every time!

Kitty I found a HB at 8 weeks. The first time you use it, it takes a while because its like playing pin the tail on the donkey but once you know where it lies then you can go back and find it again as at this stage it doesn't move much until it reaches the uterus and then has more space to move.

I have my scan tomorrow eek! One more sleep!

Blending · 06/11/2012 09:54

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I was in the land of nod at a stupid time again last night...I don't know how you ladies were awake!

I've only got low level nausea, which is fairly constant unless I smell fried food or garlic, then I throw up. I do feel better afterwards but end up retching like on an empty stomach if I can't get away from the smell.

I want to watch the US election tonight, so will try and nap later.

Yup twins are a mixed blessing. Dh isn't completely bowled over by the positives yet (Still in shock!) We'll manage, but its going to be difficult, practically and financially.

But once those first few demanding years are over, the benefits will outweigh the negatives.

I always wanted 3 children, and this was our last attempt at IVF as at nearly £6k a go, the odds getting slimmer, I'm 40 next year, and the actual trauma of treatment we'd decided that it wasn't right to keep going on the emotional rollercoaster. So we hit the jackpot insted!

MrsBri · 06/11/2012 10:15

Wow, Blending, jackpot indeed!! :-)

My DH has said we 'might as well' have twins. I'm not convinced!

Bit of nagging pain on the right hand side today...now worried about ectopic. But no blood and definitely more nagging than agony. 7+3 today...anyone else have this kind of thing about then?

Feeling queasy still. Think pretzels may be the way forwards. Or something similar.

Got one of my new tops on today. Still got a visible bump though. Arrrrggghhh!

Thundernonk · 06/11/2012 10:21

I think it's probably easier to think about twins when you haven't got other children. I can really understand that it's a totally different thing thinking of twins when you've already got little ones! Having said that blend, it's fantastic that you've had IVF success!

Luckily I can wear big jumpers or smock dresses/tops for work so I can cover up bloating bump quite easily.

Mrs Bri everything is a movin' and a groovin' in there, so it sounds normal, your uterous tends be generally to the right hand side, so its in the right locations for the general gripes as its stretching.

If it get really painful though, its worth getting it checked out, just for the peace of mind.

I've been having round ligament pains (RLP), which are stabby. I panicked as I didnt get them until the second trimester last time, but you can get them earlier in second pregnancys. (And obviously if you are carrying extra cargo!)

It scared me shitless the first time, and I wished someone had warned me! for anyone who hasn't experienced them I've nicked this from Wiki

*The most common symptoms of RLP are:
Sudden pain in the lower abdomen, usually in the right side of the pelvic area that can extend to the groin.
Shooting abdominal pain when performing sudden movements or physical exercise. Pain is sudden, intermittent and lasts only for a few seconds.[6]

RLP may be caused by a spasm or cramp when the ligament contracts involuntarily. The ligament pulls on nerve fibers and sensitive structures of the female reproductive system. Since the uterus tends to be oriented towards the right side of the body, the pain is also often felt on the right side. This leads to frequent confusion with appendicitis.[7]
During pregnancy, the uterus expands to accommodate the growing fetus. This increase in size and weight of the uterus puts stress on the ligament that holds it, causing it to stretch. During physical exertion or sudden movements, the ligament is overly stretched, causing pain.*

kittykatskumkwat · 06/11/2012 10:53

I'm with the early to bedders, I was asleep by 8:30 last night, I swear it's getting worse and dh wants us to go and see James bond tomorrow night, I'm dreading how tired I'll feel but also guilty as I've been putting all things like that off, plus I'm surposed to be on a hen night in London sat night, how will I manage?!?
Is time standing still or is it just me!!!
Good luck tomorrow pear, hope you've turned that feeling better corner for good

MrsBri · 06/11/2012 11:06

Thank you, Blending :-) I'm just rather nervous!

My pain is in the same lower pelvic region, just nagging / fizzing! Weird. Nowhere near unbearable.

Ooh...just had a wee and it hurts less. Walking also eases it. Interesting!!

I've got a private scan on Sat, so that will tell me if it is all in the right place!

peardrop2 · 06/11/2012 11:43

Ooh Blending thanks for posting that. I've been experiencing those feelings for the last two days on the right side just above my pelvis which has really worried me. It happened again in the middle of the night just remembered that I did wake up!! So it's good to hear its my uterus stretching again, I thought that was done with...obviously not!

Thundernonk · 06/11/2012 13:25

I have a cheapo Doppler now. Haven't heard a hb once! Just my own hb all over the shop.

And yeah kitty time is standing still!

OP posts:
kittykatskumkwat · 06/11/2012 13:43

I've heard you have to use lots of gel thunder and press down reasonably hard, I had a heart beat listener for dd but it's not a great one and only works from 24 odd weeks, I guess I can see how they would cause panic aswell at this early stage, the midwifed can be reluctant to listen at 16wks x

Thundernonk · 06/11/2012 13:55

Yeah have tried with lots of goo and lots of different searching techniques...oh well!

Yeah I've got my next appointment booked for 15 weeks but they say if my dating scan finds I'll be less than that then I'll need to rebook because they might not be able to find hb!
