Oh just noticed people talking about dying their hair. My hair needs touched up too but I'm avoiding it as I read in a few places that the fumes from the hair dye are bad in the first 12 weeks (one week in particular is supposed to be really bad, but I can't remember which sorry!) as its bad for baby's brain development, so try to avoid dying your hair for the first 12 weeks if possible.

MooLL · 04/10/2012 08:38

for all those at 7 weeks, I've jsut read our little beans are growing tongues this week - soooo cute!

toffeesam · 04/10/2012 08:41

Just checking in cos i have been awol. 10 weeks today. Feeling sick still, ginger. hasn't helped.
Good to see hooya here.
Wow the fred has got big.

BeauticianNotMagician · 04/10/2012 08:43

Pedantic Sorry i dont know what you've been reading but thats not right. They tell you there are so many things you can't do during pregnancy its ridiculous you would never leave the house.

I have worked in hair and beauty salons during all of my pregnancies so around loads of dyes and acrylic nail chemicals and there is nothing wrong with my children.Other than DS1 having autism which definitely isnt because i dyed my hair.I also have seen hundreds of women get there hair dyed throughout pregnancy. The main guideline is to be careful with scalp dyes as it can apparently enter the bloodstream but there is no evidence to prove it harmful to a baby.I for one have never seen a pregnant women let her roots come through for 9 months purely because she is pregnant.

I had my roots done two weeks ago and had a scalp colour. Its like excercise they say not to get too overheated.Well im carrying on excercising and yes when i do i get hot.

Sorry to rant and everyone is entitled to do as they please.I just think Midwifes especially scare people these days with no evidence to back up there claims.

8+6

PedanticPanda · 04/10/2012 08:46

I didn't say 9 months, I said in the first 12 weeks.

BeauticianNotMagician · 04/10/2012 08:53

Pedantic Sorry yes i know. But even during the first 12 weeks ive always had mine done and known friends too as i have never found evidence to suggest is unsafe.

Feeling tired today even though i slept for a full 10 hours. Also grumpy. So sorry if i took it out on you Pedantic.

Even still I'd rather not taking the chance, just incase. The nhs website also says; Many women decide to wait to dye their hair until after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, when the risk of chemical substances harming the baby is much lower, so the advice is all a bit confusing. I'm seeing my GP in an hour so I'll double check there to see if I need to go another 5 weeks with dodgy highlights.

kittykatskumkwat · 04/10/2012 09:30

I had an all over colour last week as totally forgot it might not be advisable, I would still have had my hair done but would have had highlights instead as the colour doesn't even touch your scalp and I had that done with dd, I'm abit gutted now as although from what ive read there's no evidence to suggest damage and I read that nhs thing pedantic but it doesnt say you shouldn't have it done in the first 12 wks just that some women prefer not to! Still I would have gone for the highlights, I think bar alcohol im doing a good job of breaking about every rule there is,
I've had hot baths
I've changed the cats litter ( I can hardly leave it can I although used rubber gloves)
I've had my hair dyed
I carry heavy things constantly ( think 1yr old dd falls into that catogory)
Had tuna steaks, scallops and dippy eggs ( although in my opinion the food things are very ott and I think you can have tuna in moderation, scallops aslong as they are well cooked and I did them and the eggs were lion stamped so think I'm ok on that level)
Anyone want to beat me???( not literallyWink)

kittykatskumkwat · 04/10/2012 09:38

10storey that's so weird about the hot bath making you feel sick, I had a slightly hotter shower yesterday and out of no where (mid-shampoo-ing) threw up, had to get out of shower and instantly felt better. I think hot conditions are a no-go.

kittykatskumkwat · 04/10/2012 09:55

Hi 10, I got a chest infection last time aswell as colds and got prescribed antibiotics when it was bad as the doctor said it wouldn't do the baby any good to have the illness transfer through, that was about 10 days after suffering and I was coughing up green flem yuk!
Other then that paracetamol is fine as are halls soothers, strepcils are a no, you can make your own lemon and honey drink and I found that quite soothing
You have my sympathy x

PedanticPanda · 04/10/2012 10:29

kittykat one of the great things about being pregnant is that your DP has to clean the trays! I used that excuse even when ttc, poor DP has been cleaning the trays for months now :o

Pedantic that ofcourse should be the idea but I tend to sort them out in the mornings as I always get up first and can't bear to see it, in fairness it's not that often, we only keep them in at night so they usually hold it till they can go out, I only have to do it once a week really, dh started doing it last time Untill he got bored!
10 I dont think there is much apart from certain cough sweets and paras, it's a total bind, no lemsips night nurse etc Sad

10 my brain isn't working good enough right now to give specifics but there will be homeopathic options. But you'd need to take advice for someone who really knows what they are on about.

PedanticPanda · 04/10/2012 11:38

I'm just out of the GP's surgery. He says I have a tumor on my kidney, it's benign which is good but I need a cat scan as it needs tested further. I barely remembered to tell him I am pg, but the scan obv can't be done if I'm pregnant so I'll need monitored during the pregnancy and extra scans. Apparently that's the reason I've been so tired all the time too, but benign is good obv as it means its not cancerous but it could still grow and cause problems.

I was so shocked that I forgot to ask for a copy of the name of it as he says its really rare (he had to go look it up while I was in his office), so I'm not sure how it would affect baby, if at all, or how it could affect the pregnancy and can't research it at home.

PedanticPanda · 04/10/2012 11:39

But then again how could they check it was benign by just an ultrasound, I'm really confused and wish i'd asked more bloody questions now, does anyone know anything about tumours?

Gosh, I'm so sorry Pedantic. How did they pick up on it? Did you have other symptoms other than tiredness? I have no advice-just wanted to offer a hug. Is DH with you? Can you ring surgery/midwife to ask your questions again? I'd ring midwife and ask her to do it for you?

10-just been to GP about my cold. He says it's a nasty virus going round these parts where the cold is lasting over 2 weeks! He prescribed me some cough linctus and said Paracetemol is fine. I wish I'd known this earlier.

wilderumpus · 04/10/2012 11:52

pedantic hope you ok! thank god is benign, phew. can you make an appt to go back and talk to the dr properly tomorrow? Don't think you should be googling these things, you might terrify yourself! get back to drs!

10 you can use paracetemol for your fever and when DH is ill I make him a home made lemsip of juice of one lemon in a cup, a large teasppon of honey and then hot water. You can also add grated ginger if you can stand it. This helps your throat and gets in some vits but won't stop the sniffling sadly. Hope your cold goes soon chuck.

beaut I am in a grump today too! or crying! hello hormones :) feel v pmt-y.

hair dye is fine. I am going to dye my hair as soon as I can! I am not exactly a stickler for 'pg rules' either tho, particularly food, as many are archaic or completely ignored in other countries whose babies are born as healthy as ours!

PedanticPanda · 04/10/2012 11:58

I was having frequent UTI's so was sent for an ultrasound about a month ago. That was me just getting the test results back, I'm always tired, and faint a lot, I get dizzy and light headed quite often and need to pee all the time too, so that's all related to it as it affects kidney function. You're right I think I'll need to book another appointment with a list of questions, he said he was going to research it and took my number so if there was anything else he'd contact me but there's no harm in me contacting him first surely. I've just registered with the midwife, that's what I was doing today too so once she gets in touch I'll have her check everything baby related too with the doc as he said they'll need to contact him about it anyway.

kittykatskumkwat · 04/10/2012 12:21

Oh panda that must have been a shock!
I think you always think of a few questions you wish you'd asked later so I'd write them down as you think of them. I agree I can't see how he could say it was benign though unless he knows that for sure, I presume theyve taken bloods etc and maybe thats told them. Hope it doesn't worry you too much, Hugs x
